I am wait listed and eager!

Lantern Lodge

Oh my god, it is so good to have my computer back. I am so sorry for the long wait, guys, but my computer was in the shop. Don't get me started on why I couldn't post via my Blackberry (long story that may or may not involve liquor).

Time to catch up!

Once again, my bad.

First I'll address the simple answered question. Von Doom, you can hop on the waiting list if you want. Only two people on it currently and that's Elijah and Chris. Sorry to disappoint but I'm going to say 'no' to the Anti-Paladin as this isn't an evil campaign. Honestly, Arwin is the only one that is evil (and that's Lawful Evil). Everyone else is neutral in their own regard.

Second, Marcy, its roughly transitioning from Autumn to Winter. You didn't miss it. I forgot to include it. Apologies on that one. About the writ, I'll post up the full extent of the writ in a few. Trying to get draw one up so you can sort of see one, you know?

Also working on the map of the Lake Meronia area - already have one for Ren that I will post up in a few.

Finally, to Raignik, the new Magus playtest is out and I have it if you'd like to get your sheet updated to it.

I'd like to be added to the waiting list if at all possible. Thanks.

Excellent!

I'll update my sheet after work today. I'll be keeping everything more or less the same if possible. (I'll post what things ended up being modified here, so you don't have to compare and contrast.)

Kibeth wrote:

Added.

To all my waiting list personnel, if you don't mind, feel free to use this forum as your discussion thread as well. With four people on the waiting list now, I'm tempted to start a parallel campaign. If, perhaps, you've been looking into our actual game thread, you will notice that the High Chancellors have called numerous heroes to Ren - a call-to-arms, if you will. Read up on the thread here and you can get a bit familiar with what's going on. Who knows - a parallel campaign with two rival parties maybe? Hm... Easily possible with PBPs.

Anyways, enough of my GM scheming. To those on the waiting list, please come up with a concept and post it up here. I know some of you already have, but for those that haven't, please do. However, please look over the rules and regulations we have posted up throughout this OOC thread while I attempt to compile them altogether into a single post.

To Chris - Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see a listing for equipment anywhere on your sheet. You have 25,000 GP to spend so feel free to do so. Unless you prefer running around in your skivvies at Level 7?

To my active group, I'm working on the new post now. Feel free to begin your journey to wherever the consensus decided you're headed. Also, please make sure I know. Kind of an important aspect. Don't want to be working on the Tower mission if you're heading to the Lake.

I don't know if this was specifically addressed but what medium are we using for combat? Just the forums or do we intend to use something else? I figured I should ask this now instead of waiting till it actually happens.

Skimming through this forum and the PbP forum, I'm aware of the call-to-arms in Ren and the nature of the Imperium. I have a couple of ideas that I'm tossing around and I thought I'd ask a few questions. No matter what I decide, the attitude of the character will be the same. I'd like to play a character that despises the Imperium, and always has; most likely due to being wronged by them in some way. The goal is to play a mage hunter type of character that targets only the Imperium.

I'm looking at either the sandman bard variant, the witch hunter from super genius games if that's allowed, the magus or the superstitious barbarian variant. Are there any of those that you would prefer I didn't do? What place would an orc (or race similar to orc) lycanthrope barbarian have in Aris, if any? I am interested in the mongrel and changeling races you mentioned much earlier in this thread as well.

Would it also be safe to say that you're not allowing homebrew classes? I can't remember if I saw something about that or not. I have this nifty little spell thief remake....

@ Kibeth
Not to speak for Severed, but I think we are doing Core and APG classes only (and the Magus from the play test).

As for despising the Imperium, you'll be in good company here. :)

Haha, well nothing like contempt for a mutual enemy to bring people together. And thanks, that narrows it down. Now to decide between the magus, the sandman bard and the superstitious barbarian. Barbarian is out if I can't play some sort of orcish (or something close to orcish) lycanthrope.

Looks like the Lake.

I am into a variant campaign! I will throw some stuff up.

@ Kibeth
Seeing as how my character has had a personal experience with the imperial mage hunters I like where this is going. I bet we'll get along great, and have a curb-stomping good time.

@Ronin
Looks like we are going to the lake, and we're ready to go.

New post up. Sorry if it took awhile but I fiddled with Maptool for awhile before finally giving up. The reason my posts take awhile too is because I work 14 hours a day, have a wife and son I prefer to spend time with, and because I'm working on the game's material. Please try to be patient as I will reciprocate it back on you. Thank you.

Not sure if I'm going first yet or not, but i wanted to make sure I was doing it right.

Obscuring Mist and 5 foot step

More than reasonable Ronin. =)

Anyone besides me think adding a label to the grid would be a good idea? ABC 123 type of thing?

For example, Ronin moves from E5 to F3 to attack the gnoll?

I think it would make things easier. I'll also be numbering the enemies in a similar fashion as to how I labeled your tokens with the first letter of your names.

I see pros and no cons.

That being said, it sounds good to me.

Agreed :) Will be easier for us and GM too and making game more fair, since there will be no "mistakes" then

A friend of mine and myself are looking to start something up online - a sorta PBP but that uses Yahoo Messenger, Skype, or one of those similar message systems. If anyone is interested in this one, we're looking for five (possibly six) other people who'd be interested. Scenarios, rules, and the like can be discussed once we have a group.

The setting will be a large homebrew world of mine known as Aris, a world tore apart by a tyrannical empire known as the Arcane Imperium. The Imperium has discovered areas known as Nodes where arcana can be found in its purest form. The Imperial Capital of Ren sits on top of one of these Nodes and as such is considered the base of operations for the entire Imperium. Magic in Aris is abundant in some areas – blending seamlessly with technology – whereas in some areas it is almost non-existant. However, most of this magic is sanctioned via Imperial statutes. All magic users are required to register via the Imperial Covenant or face officiated persecution at the hands of the Imperium. Most of the time this punishment is severing their ability to cast.

An Introduction to Aris
** spoiler omitted **...

To my knowledge it would be a simple matter to create a yahoo group doing so...

Lantern Lodge

Alright, I'll make the changes. You guys know by now that I run everything by you before changing anything.

Fire, we've moved a bit ahead of that. Just doing a straight play-by-post now.

My completed character including equipment is up. I will try to write up the back story this weekend.

Christopher Tomas wrote:

Sounds good, Chris. Kudos to the effort you're throwing in despite being on the waiting list. Shows dedication and I like that in my players.

To my active group, is anyone against rolling initiative per encounter as opposed to per round? I find if we do it per encounter, it speeds the encounters up a bit rather than having to wait for everyone to reroll which seems to slow things down.

Severed Ronin wrote:

I'm all for "per encounter" initiative.

Looks like unless Xandar (wherever he is) rolls a nat 20, I've got the first move. So let me know if theres a problem with the move I posted here earlier and I'll fix it.
Not really sure where the town exit is
"per encounter" initiative sounds good to me, thats how I figured we would do it.

Lantern Lodge

Alright, we'll do "Per Encounter" Initiative.

Also, I'll be rolling for Xandar here since he's probably swamped at work or home (or both, in some cases; know I'm a master of that one). Xandar, you're initiative will be... 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 <-- That, whatever it may be.

Edit: Draig, there's that Natural 20. -chuckles- Wow... I've yet to roll one of those in my other PBPs. Damn. That was probably the one time I will too. Anyways! Since technically, it is a tie, I as GM have to do the tiebreaker and I'm not going to make either of you reroll. For simplicity's sake, Draig will go first since he has the higher Dexterity of the two.

Also, Draig, your actions have been noted. Obscuring Mist then a 5' step, correct? Since I'm such a good GM, I'm going to assume you readied the spell during that one round timeframe, but please announce so next time if you would.

I'll try to update the map as soon as possible. Will be working on it shortly. And I think that's all I have for now.

Lantern Lodge

Alright the newest update to the map is here .

Everyone take a look at it and let me know if that's right. The brown line around you all indicates the radius of Obscuring Mist that Draig cast. From the sound of it, you all readied yourselves for the fight. The casting of Obscuring Mist caused the group to hesitate for a round, so now all of you are on even ground. Also, a few of the Altheiri made off with the two untouched councillors and those remaining grouped up around the dying Councillor, Arimus El.

Severed Ronin wrote:

I figured that's how it always worked XD

On a side note regarding the obscuring mist spell, does this effect us as well? In other words can we no longer see the enemy either?

@ Mac K
yes I suppose so. Its a good place to be if we don't want to get hit though. We can draw them in, or our Melee fighters can leave and surprise them; because they cant see in. Also good if we need to run away.

Obscuring Mist

I didnt know I needed the ready action, if I make another mistake I'm sorry and let me know.

I doubt Xandar will mind the nat 20 lol

Obscuring Mist

Well the reason I ask is because if that's the case then we wouldn't technically know where the enemy is, not sure if we need to roll any sort of perception checks before we try to attack and such.

I might be over thinking things but I figured I would ask before I start making posts.

Well we would know their current location, and unless the enemies can pass a spellcraft check they have no idea what just happened. Same with us I suppose, but if the veterans or holy men have seen this before they might know how to use it to their advantage.

You can still see 5 feet in front of you, so charging into battle wouldn't be hazardous to allies, and by the time you get there its likely there will be someone there too.

Would we know if the altheiri are going to return fire? thats another reason i cast the spell, crossfire.
If they arent directly after us we suddenly look a lot less appealing.
How thick is the crowd? If I cast lightning are there bystanders that will get fried?
Do we know which E# is the spellcaster, or at least have an idea (ex:back row or dressed differently)?

Lantern Lodge

Its true that you can only really see 5' in front of you when inside the radius of Obscuring Mist which makes it a good way to get battlefield control (which you guys have just done in-game). It makes your foe hesitatant to rush in which gives you time to do your thing.

As for the Altheiri and those questions, the Altheiri are going to do what they see trained to do and that's protect their charges no matter what it takes. With that in mind, however, the eight you guys see now aren't the only threat on the battlefield. They're just the eight hassling you now. Yes, there are others on the battlefield, but they're not all innocent bystanders. Some are enemies and some are heroes like yourselves. Don't bother with those details right now. Just worry about the fight.

Good questions though.

Also, Mac, I know you're concerned about the Mist but like I said, its battlefield control. Its just a more subtle way of doing it as compared to say, lobbing a Fireball spell. Your enemies will be doing it so I've no qualms about you lot returning the favor.

You're welcome about the heads up, Draig. That's why I'm an awesome GM! =D

Not to toot my own horn or anything...

On, and before I forget, I'm in the process of moving closer to base right now, so I'll be off the grid for a few days until Fios has a chance to get me hooked back up come the 17th. Will try to Post via Phone until then, but that's a b#?*! so I'll probably be absent.

This'll give Xandar time to show. Xandar, love you guys to death, but, regardless of situation, if you haven't posted by then, I may have you vanish on a church mission and replace your slot with one of the Wait Crew. Somehow, I've this feeling that this sixth slot is going to be the "Guest Star" space.

Liberty's Edge

Howdy there! Kibeth turned me on to this game, and I notice you have a waitlist going. I'd like to turn in an app to go onto the waitlist if theres still a chance.

I have a few questions relating to a character concept I have floating around. I plan to app with a Paladin of Soleil (Warrior of the Light variant), focusing on mercy and the redemptive aspect of the Goddess.

1) What is her favored weapon? I was hoping to dip a few levels into monk and grab unarmed proficiency, play a paladin who disarms and does nonlethal damage when fighting.

2) Can I smite evil and do nonlethal damage?

3) For back story purposes: How are churches and such organized? I was hoping to play a paladin who acted as a bounty hunter, bringing in those who violate the law, and helping eliminate the corruption from those who are possessed or under the influence of evil magical items. Fundamentally he would be more Good than Lawful, but bounty hunting is a fine excuse to bring him closer to those who are suffering the most.

Thats about all I have for now. I played a paladin this one is inspired from in a campaign a while back that fell apart. He was one of my favorite characters (though partly because the DM put me in extraordinary circumstances. Neutral undead, grey and grey morality, tough decisions all around. I feel like thats the kind of world this is, which is why I think the character could fit.)

I'm going to hold off posting my action(s) until a few more people post since I'm so low in the initiative order.

Marcy "Lucky" Lull wrote:

Oh come now, don't let me be the only fighter in the front XD

Didn't I mention my guys a pacifist? Just kidding, he'll be up there with you shortly.

Marcy "Lucky" Lull wrote:

Oh boy more for me then. =P

This is Kibeth's application. Everything is done except for roughly 700 gold worth of mundane items. I went with the lycanthrope barbarian since I didn't really get a response; I figured I'd try it and just change it if you decided you didn't want me to do it. I made my character level 6 rather than 7 and used a little less than a 32 point buy simply because of the template; it's cr +1. Balance wise, it comes out to be about the same. Hope it's alright. Just let me know if it is not.

I'm finishing up my finals, so if people are itching to move on Raignik will hold an attack action. =)

Ive got my e-mail on the Homepage URL in my profile, if anyone needs to contact me.

I'm using a spell on my next turn too, not sure if I need to do something in advance or not...

Lantern Lodge

Sorry Kibeth, I try to see everything but sometimes a post or two slips my sight. You're good on the Lycanthrope (Wolf I'm assuming?) Barbarian. Your build looks good overall unless I missed something. If so, advisors to work! Also, you can put Caernhold down as your place of origin as its the biggest (and only one I've devised at this point) territory. Place is the stomping grounds for lycanthropes and an established kingdom for them within the Southern Continent of Seresu.

Finals week, eh? Maybe why Xandar has vanished. Still, everyone continue on with initiative as normal. I'll pretend the Inquisitor saw something shiny. Well, Inquisitor of Darkness, so... Something dull and unappealing?

Kibeth's friend whose name my phone is not letting me scroll up to, a few things to touch on. First, let me say that I have no problem with your concept whatsoever. With that being said, I'd like to point you to a few aspects about the others. Almost everyone is neutral for the most part (not sure on the Wait Crew; once again, downside of phone) or partially evil. Cerelia only knows what Arwin has in mind. I don't have a problem with the nonviolence either as long as you keep in mind that everyone else will be busting heads. Beyond that its all cool with me. Not sure how mechanics work on Smiting and Nonlethal but when I get Fios back up and running, I'll give it a looksie. As of now, I don't see why not. May have to change it to KO Evil though. =D I think I posted everyone's favored weapons somewhere back on this thread (page reference anyone?) to include the Overdeities but if not I'll track down my listing because I made sure to get it all down once Arwin asked about Cerelia's. I also think we devised a hierarchy for the Church since it was on our minds. Read back on that one as well. I know there's a lot of reading back now but one of these days I hope to get it all compiled in one succinct format for all of us. Won't be today though.

Besides you want in my game, expect to do a bit of work!

Draig, you cast the First Round so you can't really do much until the next round anyways. You aren't near any enemies so your spell won't get an AoO from any of them. Unless Raignik wants to pop you one?

That is everything I think. If there is anyone and any question I missed, please let me know. This phone is awesome and not-so-much at the same time so please feel free to speak up and I'll do my damnedest to get an answer for you.

This has been today's episode of Ranting with Ronin.

Lantern Lodge

Christ, Marcy, on your first attack roll? The nickname wasn't self-bestowed was it? =P

Group consensus on how you guys want to address rolls of '1'. I usually play with Crit Fumbles and Crit Hits but its up to you guys how you want to play this. Make note I'll apply the same rules to both Hits and Fumbles as well as both you and your enemies.

I'm very good about not letting you kill each other or yourselves via the Fumbles though, so don't be afraid of that. A little nicks and cuts maybe...

Considering I don't see them very often I don't have a problem with them, I think it adds some extra spice (even if it is potentially bad spice) to the game. But I certainly wont complain if you decide to do away with them either.

You can actually die from a fumble? Haha the worst I have seen happen is someone lose their weapon. XD

Ursanthrope actually. I'm a werebear. And no problem at all, it happens. Hoping to get in when you guys have space, or if you run a parallel adventure. I hope you don't mind the narrative style of backstory. If it's a problem, I can change it up. Someone let me know if I'm missing any rules. Like I said, I figured being level 6 with less than a 32 point buy was a fair trade for the cr +1 template. If not, again, someone just let me know. Thanks for the consideration.

Severed Ronin wrote:

I know, I know... This dice rolling simulation algorithm hates me. ;P

As for fumbles, I always liked playing with them. The group I used to play with even used the critical fumble deck, which I thought was quite fun. Sometimes screwing up is just more entertaining than succeeding.

Sometimes.

Lantern Lodge

I've seen weapons get dropped, arrows miss their target just enough to hit an ally, and once I even saw an Empowered Fireball explode in the caster's hands.

It all depends on the GM. There's only a 1 in 100 chance that I let anything absolutely terrible happen but, hey, a crit is a crit when you're playing by those rules. You won't always hit an ally of course, but the nicest fumble will definitely be an auto-miss. I don't care if you do exceed the target's AC.

Like I said, since this is a beta I'm not going to let you guys kill each other. ...yet... =D

Prettied it up slightly, cuz that's the kind of dork I am.

Oh hey, thanks. So was the thought of running a parallel adventure a serious one?
