This is the discussion thread for the Redmond 2076 game.

I will be making my selection tonight by approx 2100 Eastern time.

For those who get selected, try to imagine what your PC is doing in Seattle in February, 2076. This can be as simple as "sitting around in his undies, nomming on Soy Flakes and watching Trid" or as elaborate as you would like.

If you have a Lifestyle, please decide (and declare) where it is and have a very rough idea of the type of neighborhood (quiet residential? rehabbed industrial? old storage container on the docks? a nasty alley with a couple of trash can fires?).

If you don't have one listed, I assume you are living on the Street (see the "alley" above). We will not be using the optional rules for Stun Damage for lower than Middle, but the various options (workspace, hard to find, etc.) are fair game.

Don't stress too much about the mechanics of the game system. Most of the complexity will be easily negated with the pace of PbP, and I am more than happy to help everyone with any esoteric or obscure rules that pop up.

Happily, the Matrix slow-down which crops up at the table shouldn't really impact us too badly.

Cthulhu-Spawn DM/crazy person

Middle lifestyle: Outskirts of Downtown Seattle, older section of the down, one that one had nuyen pumping through it's veins but has started to fall into disrepair. The whole block has forgotten feeling to it.

Low lifestyle: Apartment just outside of Talistar district. Close enough to use the poor elven distract as a convenient place to disappear.

Low Lifestyle: Apartment in Redmond, close to a construction site. Construction has stalled out due a funding issue.

Squatter: Coffin motel room "reserved" for him. This squat is a stones throw from the Sea-Tac airport. An easy place to miss, as it was built with a little more privacy in mid then your standard block of coffin hotels.

Male Human

Hello all. Looking forward to playing in this, as well as trying out this rather interesting system.

The following comes from the recruitment thread, but since we now have a discussion thread, I thought to bring it here.

The Wyrm Ouroboros wrote:
Stunbolt. It's the easy-peasy magic gun. You'll want your first karma to go into powerbolt (for the anti-mage stress test), and then probably Stunball. Understand that except for that woefully underpowered holdout pistol, he's got no defense against the bane of mages everywhere - drones. (Get your summoning up to snuff; spirits vs drones is usually a nightmare going the other way.)

Stunbolt it is then. It was my first choice but I was being a bit undecided, so I thought to ask for some feedback and opinions. :-)

Powerbolt and Conjuring are most certainly priorities. But since I was trying to cover general magic stuff (Spellcasting, Counterspelling, Assensing) and general summoning stuff (Summoning, Binding, Banishing) and doctor stuff (First Aid, Medicine) and general useful stuff (some weapon skill or other, a little athletics, some stealth, Etiquette, etc)... well, something had to give. So I decided to have my guy a bit more learned in Sorcery rather than Conjuring. Besides, spirit summoning stuff felt a bit more difficult to grasp, so I thought to learn a bit more about it through playing.

Regarding the pistol, you do have a point. I could perhaps change the armor jacket into a lined coat (not sure how wise that would be, but it would save me 100 credits, plus it would look cooler :-P) and/or get rid of the ballistic mask (again, not sure how wise, plus it would take the trodes with it; I am not sure how useful those are though) and/or drop Nonconductivity to 2 (from 4) and use some or all of the credits to get another pistol (light or heavy, not sure which) that would not be concealed. It seems that not carrying any visible weapons leads people to think you are a -Heaven forfend- mage, which then leads said people to try to kill said perceived mage. A lot. Preposterous. So, any advice on the gun front (seeing as how many guns there are out there, meaning a lot of different capabilities and a lot of different prices)?

Which reminds me. I have 154 nuyen left over from character creation (at least at the moment, as there may be some last minute changes depending on how my weapon conundrum above goes) and I need to roll the starting nuyen from middle lifestyle as well.

4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 3, 6) = 17 x 100 = 1700

Sczarni

Male Cuddly L'il Fuzzy Hamster Psion (Telepath) 20

You could drop the ballistic mask in favor of a helmet (save 50¥), which, with the reduction in non-conductivity could get you a decent light or heavy pistol and some ammo. I'd have to check the books more closely for specific numbers but the Colt America 2066 is pretty cheap, as is the Beretta 201t, if I recall.

And don't worry about having gaps in your skillset, that's one of the design points behind SR5 - meaningful choices and limits. Everything has a price, et cetera.

Male Human

I think I will indeed make a few changes to the armor stuff (maybe ballistic mask -> helmet, maybe armor jacket -> lined coat, maybe nonconductivity 4 -> 3 or even 2) and grab, I think, a decent light pistol (either the Ares Light Fire 70 or the Colt America L36) and some ammo and put those in the armor's concealable holster and concealed pocket. I will probably keep the Streetline Special in another concealable holster as a backup, though with considerably less ammo.

Or something like that, depending on credits anyway... :-)

I know I said that perhaps I should keep one of the guns a bit more visible, but then again, are Shadowrunners not supposed to be all about stealth and concealability and all that?

I should be able to make the changes by tomorrow, as I am currently at work and will be for, well, another 20 hours.

Thanks for picking Sir Edmund. Will get an alias up ASAP. Does anyone have any suggestions/changes they think I should examine?

Here is my alias for Sir Edmund.

Re: stealthy shadowrunners; depends on the setting and people involved.

Dealing with a renegade MC full of 1%ers? Packing a pistol or blade is par for the course. They probably won't even look too funny if you have a shotgun on your back.

Walking into Soybucks for a Double-Frapp-Mocha-Hippy-Drink? Yeah, concealed carry is the way to go.

Be flexible, and read the scene, and you'll be fine.

The petite girl stands in the shadows, intently watching the Street Sam's agony as he clutches broken ribs with an arm burned nearly beyond recognition. He had so casually torn out his humanity and discarded it. The hitmage's cold eyes rim with moisture as she watches him slowly crawl away, emotion leaking forth somewhere between love, lust, and loathing. This time she had saved him, though she was as likely to kiss him, castrate him, tend to his injuries for weeks, as eviscerate him. Such was the way of soulmates.

Detroit had been his home for much of his life, where he started running, and also where it all had gone wrong. Time in lockup brought too much attention his way, so he leveraged the cut from his last job to grab a new identity and seek out a fresh start in Seattle proper.

He knew one person there, zEphyr, and that suited him just fine.

Low Lifestyle

Dried bloodstains thickly washed the floor and walls of the low-rent apartment, punctuated by the scorched remnants of bullet impacts, telling the story of a drug deal gone awry. Yellow police tape had still barred the doorframe when he had moved in a week and more before, taking advantage of the opening. Grime marred any ability to see the sliver of the ocean one could barely make out beyond the industrial shipping yards.

A month, perhaps two, was all he could stay here before the owner's estate would start asking questions.

The wet winter's bite in the air had forced him inside, nursing his way to the bottom of a chipped old fashioned glass swimming in Fomorian Usquebaugh to soothe the ache residing 'neath all of the filthy bandages that entombed his torso. Malformed ice cubes backstroke in a finger of amber fluid, their play disrupted as the drink was set down.

It was time to go to work.

Male Human

Nathaniel -or Nathan to most, or Nate to close friends only (although most, if not all, of them are back in the UK)- lives in Downtown Seattle (Middle Lifestyle). He maintains an apartment there which also doubles as a doctor's office and examination room for his private practice. Although he does not work too many hours in the week, which might be a little unusual for a doctor, he nevertheless manages to make ends meet more or less. But that is not entirely due to his day job.

Having come to the UCAS from the UK only a couple of years ago or so, he is relatively new not only to the country, but to running the shadows as well. Still, he has made a contact or two so far, a (mostly) human fixer by the name of "Just" Joe and an elven woman called Elleria who operates a talismonger's shop.

Although the money from a successful run is certainly good usually and quite the incentive to keep at it, his main reason for it all is his interest in magic and the occult. He wants to further his knowledge and improve his skill with it and unlock as many of its secrets as he is able to.

Currently he finds himself between runs, so he is treating himself to some rest and relaxation, at least when a patient is not knocking on his door or calling him up for a house visit.

Male Human

And here is his finalized info. I will make an alias as soon as possible.

Cthulhu-Spawn DM/crazy person

Would you prefer for your first post, or are we free to post our intros as various PC's be chilling?

Sczarni

Male Cuddly L'il Fuzzy Hamster Psion (Telepath) 20

I will have a gameplay post up shortly, jus to set the mood and setting.

A post on reaction/chilling would be perfect following that.

Edmund looks around the "average" condo he is renting in Northgate in Downtown Seattle. The once wealthy nobleman shrugs his shoulders and quietly comments, "It was worth it!"

A man of average height in his later middle years, Sir Edmond moves with the grace of a dancer a fraction of his age. A fortune spent on reconstructing his body after the ravages of time (and a behemoth) had left him a near cripple, the bio and cyberwear has given him a new lease on life. Unfortunately he will now have to work to try and resume his past station in society.
Leaning back and looking out his window, his eyes zoom in on the many visitors to the local Mall. His hunter's instinct picks out those individuals he would consider "dangerous". As the light fades, his cybereyes adapt; first to the low light, then thermographic as night descends. Sipping a mild whiskey, he relaxes and watches the prey go by.

Cthulhu-Spawn DM/crazy person

Cool, cool :)

Male Human

Quick question: Is there a point to having Medicine as an Academic Knowledge Skill if you already have Medicine as an Active Skill?

Sczarni

Male Cuddly L'il Fuzzy Hamster Psion (Telepath) 20

Medicine as Knowledge Skill reflects theories/research/documentation. Pharmacologyt & Physiokinetics, etc.

Medicine as an Active Skill is all about advanced medical procedures. Surgery, Bioware/Cyberware implantation/design, illness/disease treatment, and the like.

Male Human

Ah, I see. So for a doctor, both seem fitting. Thanks.

'MC' being the old-style 'motorcycle club'? Or would the shadowrun term 'go-gang' be more appropriate?

Redmond Gangs:

To be helpful, and retrieved from the Seattle Gangs page from the SR Wikia.

162's - street gang, ghouls, colors red and brown
Brain Eaters - thrill gang, numerous deckers, colors white and black
Crimson Crush - street gang, orks, colors red and gold
Rat Eaters - street gang, Yakuza ties (might not exist)
Red Hot Nukes - street/go-gang, dwarven adepts, colors red and grey
Rusted Stilettos - street/go-gang, orks and trolls, colors black and red

Ancients and Desolation Angels (and a few others) can occasionally be found in the area.

Less criminal, more "Wannabe 2nd Stringers".

Also a bunch of dudes who want the comraderie and general protection numbers afford, but not exactly the hardened criminal organization like the Ancients or even a more street level crew like the Rat Eaters.

Cthulhu-Spawn DM/crazy person

Sweet.

Alright, I will attempt to post tonight at work. If that doesn't fly (signal is a bit wonky at work), I'll have a post out in the early am :)

Male Human

psionichamster: You know, it occurs to me that you should consider using the Mister Johnson alias. It feels rather fitting. :-)

Oh. So target practice for real go-gangs. 'Cause god knows, the Spikes ain't gonna care you're just a 'gathering of non-aligned citizens', they'll mow ya down anyhow. :P :)

Mr. J comes out when Mr. J is in scene. :)

Sczarni

Yeah, not a serious threat/presence on the streets.

More like a loosely aligned bowling team then a go-gang.

Out of curiosity, does Edmund usually walk around with his sniper rifle in hand?

And if so, how is he transporting it?

lol..no, he has his pistol, he left the rifle at home....sorry should have specified that!!

Synxol: Have you considered making an alias for the character?

M Roleplayer 25 / GM 8 / Writer 18 - Neutral Annoyed - Atlanta, GA - SA: Punctuation, Spelling, Sentence Structure

PsiHam, would you mind, in the future, delaying the post-negotiation stuff until after some RP occurs? It feels ... rushed, and gives us no real opportunity to interact with either the Johnson or each other. As it is, a lot is uncertain. Is it 1500¥ per person, or total? Because honestly, either way it's an insult, and if that's a group payment, it's just a bigger insult. With the way you have it set up, though, it's ... very difficult to do anything but say 'dur, okay, boss'.

Sczarni

Male Cuddly L'il Fuzzy Hamster Psion (Telepath) 20

That would be 1500 per person, before negotiations.

Re: insulting prices, well, none of you have any street cred or reputations...you are unknown players so people are going to lowball you.

I will try to separate such encounters in the future, if that feels more realistic.

Quick question: Can his use of blades get up to skill 7 with specialization - or is the maximum 6 after the +2 for specialization is applied?

F. Castor wrote:
Synxol: Have you considered making an alias for the character?

I definitely did consider it, especially since Myth-Weavers only has a SR v.4 character sheet, and I'm currently testing out to see if this character sheet is workable for the game vs. typing it all out as an alias.

In the interim, if you click on the Street Alias: "JINX" - Street Samurai below his name it links you directly to the updated character sheet.

A few helpful pointers have been sent my way, which have saved me time and again, since I'm a neophyte and this game is surprisingly complex, so I'm trying to get him buttoned up for play (should have everything done today, currently going through his nuyen purchases to double check my numbers, and buy items that I neglected, like medkits and the like).

If you check tomorrow, and see something glaring, please feel free to fire me a PM so I can rectify it.

Sczarni

Male Cuddly L'il Fuzzy Hamster Psion (Telepath) 20

Starting Skill Ranks can be maximum of 6, barring use of the quality Aptitude.

Specialization adds 2 to the dice pool, over and above the number of skill ranks.

Cthulhu-Spawn DM/crazy person

lol, not worried about starting price as to Red it sounds like a quick nights work. Probably not going to be the case, but hey, it could happen.

So, I tossed out his question out as an opening to a little negotiation, depending on what little answer Mister J might let out. Before any of us clicked on the "Take Job" button :P

And to make our GM's live a touch easier, I'll have all of Red's info linked to the Alias in the next day or so.

M Roleplayer 25 / GM 8 / Writer 18 - Neutral Annoyed - Atlanta, GA - SA: Punctuation, Spelling, Sentence Structure

I've been dropping characters into Chummer5, and I'm running into a couple of problems that I'm hoping the players can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

With Red, how does he get the Edge 6? I have his Attributes at B (20 points) and his Race at D (Elf, 0 points). (Selecting Attributes doesn't get you Special Attribute points in 5e, alas.)

With Harker, a similar problem - in order to get his Attributes where they are, that has to be at A (24 pts); for the skill Groups, those need to be at B (36 skills, 5 groups) ... oh, wait. Magic at C (3 Magic, 5 spells), then Race at D (for 3 points, all of which go into Magic), and Resources at E. Okay, stupid me there. :P :)

Male Human

Yap, that is pretty much how I built him. I think I actually posted it in the recruitment thread, but I am not entirely sure. Either way that is how I did it. :-)

M Roleplayer 25 / GM 8 / Writer 18 - Neutral Annoyed - Atlanta, GA - SA: Punctuation, Spelling, Sentence Structure

If anyone wants to data-exchange, I've opened up a folder in my Google Docs people can drop stuff into - PsiHamster's 5e. You should be able to create folders and drop in files - just don't go overboard on me. ;) I personally think it'd be great if everyone tossed in their Chummer5 files.

Sczarni

Male Cuddly L'il Fuzzy Hamster Psion (Telepath) 20

I agree with The Wyrm Ouroboros - Red should have an Edge of 2.

Good catch, there.

Cthulhu-Spawn DM/crazy person

Doesn't B for attributes give 6 points (20 for attributes and then the 6 (for elves)) to spend on special attributes like Edge, Magic and Resonance?

I'm fairly certain I read that correctly pg 65 in the book, 4th paragraph.

"Once the player has selected the metatype they
wish to play, they should review the Metatype column
to determine which Priority Levels give them the best
options for their character based on their preferred
metatype and the special attribute points they need.
The special attributes are Edge, Magic, and Resonance;
if you want your character to have a high rating in one
or more of these areas, make sure you select a row with
plenty of special attribute points. Technomancer characters
need to ensure they can have a high Resonance,
while magician or adept characters will want a high
Magic rating."

M Roleplayer 25 / GM 8 / Writer 18 - Neutral Annoyed - Atlanta, GA - SA: Punctuation, Spelling, Sentence Structure

No. You get special attribute points from your Metatype choice. To get the 6, you'd have to put your B selection on Metatype (Elf, 6) instead of on Attributes (20).

For example, all of the humans selected D for metatype - Human, 3. That ennabled Harker to kick the low magic (3) he got from a sub-maximal magic choice up to a 6, and the mundane humans to kick their Edge attributes from 2 to 5.

Cthulhu-Spawn DM/crazy person

Ahhhhh.... My mistake!

Will fix right now :)

M Roleplayer 25 / GM 8 / Writer 18 - Neutral Annoyed - Atlanta, GA - SA: Punctuation, Spelling, Sentence Structure

Yeah, it was kind of confusing for a lot of people when it was first released. And go throw stuff into the PsiHamster 5e game folder!!

Cthulhu-Spawn DM/crazy person

you didn't say, "Would you kindly." Or even Please.

:P

I created my character in Herolab...do you want me to reconstruct it in chummer and send you the file?

M Roleplayer 25 / GM 8 / Writer 18 - Neutral Annoyed - Atlanta, GA - SA: Punctuation, Spelling, Sentence Structure

WOULD YOU KINDLY ... 'Cause everyone knows that compels people to do all sorts of crazy stuff. ;)

And I'd love it in Chummer too, Dan. While I have HeroLab, I don't have SR5 bought, so I can only look at the pretty picture. ;) But by all means drop both in.

No. Worries. And I loved that game. Lol. Will do it tonight.

Cthulhu-Spawn DM/crazy person

Lol, and away I go!

On the confusion part, I thinks that's always been part of Shadowrun, lol.

5e is still easier to retain than 4e was.

Also, what is Chummer5? Is it similar to HeroLab?

Sczarni

Male Cuddly L'il Fuzzy Hamster Psion (Telepath) 20

It's a freeware app, sorta like Hero Lab but specifically for SR.

It's a little less pretty than HL but it works.

@ Tentacledone: It not bad, if you want, I can take your HL character and input it for the GM....I have to do mine anyway....
