Shadow of Ascanor (A)

Game Master Mar Nakrum

Within you runs the blood, and curse, of nobility. Why being the scion of some distant and ambitious ancestor grants you the right to rule is not for us to judge, but to act upon. Last year, you received correspondence from the elderly Beauturne, inviting you to attain the prestige and honor owed to your lineage. You have met with the man in person, a grotesque looking and hardened creature, yet his genuine desire to strike against the Palatinate Council of Lozeri inspired. You have joined to his venture, and soon you will meet with your new comrades in secret, in a small tavern in the vacant old capitol of Ardis.

Introducing Kyraska!

It has occurred to me that waiting until I have finished the small novel that my PC's background seems to be turning into is probably not that useful. I'll give a summary instead, see if it is okay.

Background Summary:

* Norrys Caromarc inherits a very small fortune from his grandfather.
* Should also get an Earldom (but Palatine)
* He proceeds to blow his fortune on studying in Leipstadt University, Riddleport, and Kaer Maga.
* Destitute he walks home and consults the lawyers
* All that remains is the Ravenholm Hunting Lodge and a stipend that pays for its resupply.
* Goes to Ravensholm (see below for details) - which is basically a large village/small town
* Is surprised by the number of people.
* SO many ravens and crows.
* People are primitive and sort of bestial looking.
* Acknowledgement of his title, but others have seized power in his "absence".
* Finds the records room
* Records room shows history of Ravenholm.
** Established at Earthfall by Azlanti who became wereravens to survive.
** Generations of deliberate breeding to breed out traits left them non-infectious shifters.
** Breeding to create different types of were raven - even a permanently raven form with higher intelligence
** Kellids emerge: Ravensholm people become the Crow (Karak) Marked People.
* Discovers the people are raven-shifters.
* Discovers his grandfather used and bred them, and took in Sarkorians during the Demonskin war.
* Despises the people as shifters, tieflings and half breeds.
* Ashamed of what his grandfather had done. Decides to leave the people alone.
* Assassination attempt
* Finds more recent records (which had been hidden from him)
** Ustalav is founded: name is varisianised to karakmark
** Efforts are made to breed out a ruling class, which is bred into Ustalavic nobility
** Name becomes Caromarc
* Shocked, frightened and ashamed he realises he is a breeding experiment, and presumably a monster.
* Decides to fulfill his 'purpose' and reestablish Caromarc dominance over Ravenholm, Vieland and Ustalav.
* Puts out feelers, and comes into contact with Beauturne

Themes:

I've tried to unite the house, the line and the character with the same themes. Those being:
* a powerful past with a dark secret
* relatively recent fall into powerlessness
* an effort to regain previous prestige (rebuild the manor, reclaim Vieland, rise again from mere penniless wanderer to lord of the land.

inspirations:
"Fall of the House of Usher" (a bit), "The Rats in the Walls" (a lot), "The Shadow over Innsmouth", and "The Raven".

Ravensholm:

* A ten foot tall islet (holm)
* topped with:
** mangrove trees that block the view of everything else on the holm
** ramshackle houses and tree houses
** three stone lookout towers
** a single, ancient, half-ruined gothic style stone manor
* Ravenholm is an islet of the Troll's Tail River
* the area around is swampland (it is in the Dipplemere swamp)
* there is a hidden trail that goes from here to Schloss Caromarc, then to Ascanor Lodge.

raven shifters:

mechanically these are Bloodmarked Skinwalkers (10RP). Bloodmarked are usually bats. In this case I'd like to reskin them (pardon the pun) as ravens. This is primarily because I want to tie them in with the Caromarc line, and my original inspiration came from the Caromarc=Crow Marked.
This would be a small island of the only raven skinwalkers in golarion, I guess... if that helps...

mechanics:

Most of the 3100gp is going to go on the manor :(
I'm also interested in getting the Dynasty Founder feat.
I'm interested in going Skinwalker, but could do this with Racial Heritage, or even just as flavour.
I want something that fits a philosopher. Current favourite is wizard. Given we already have applications for wizards, arcanists, alchemists and psychics I figured there was going to have to be some overlap.

Yazmine Khera wrote:
What about disciplines? Are there any themes that might be more suiting to my concept?

Lore. I almost want to say Self Perfection, but you don't get a ki pool out of it and the powers aren't as useful to your concept compared to what Lore has to offer.

Quote:
Hmm, might be worth a dip depending on how the feats themselves work. I'm a huge fan for building for fluff rather than pure optimization and I'm super excited for all the Occult Adventure's stuff.

The Chakra rules are based on rounds of use, and each round you are using your Chakras, you need to spend 1 ki point. To open or maintain your Chakras, you need to make Fort and Will saves. If you fail the Fort save, you take damage, if you fail the will save you're dazed, either way the Chakras all close.

Here are some of the abilities:
Root: Scaling DR/-
Sacral: Limited flight.
Navel: Protection bypassing breath attack.

The Chakra feat chain gives you a specific Ki pool for maintaining the open Chakras, and other cool bonuses.

Which would make your character the only concept so far that's an old money noble who still owns property. And is a proper catalyst for joining the enterprise.

That's fine.

Bloodmarked Skinwalker works for me, but with these changes:

Skill modifier for Perception works all the time (not just at night).
Speak With Animals (Crows) 3/day replaces Obscuring mist.
In Bestial Features replace Scent to range of 30 feet with Distraction.
When using the Werebat-kin feats, replace all instances of the word bat with the word crow.

Tome Eater Occultist might suit your character as well, i.e. using the histories of Caromarc to unlock your innate power.

Sounds great!

I am interested in seeing Tome Eater Occultist, but that would mean waiting until my subscription comes in.

Do Ravens count as Crows as well? They're pretty closely related.

I have some time today, I'll throw a little surprise your way later.

Shouldn't you already have access to the pdf?

I'm willing to upgrade the spell-like ability to this: Speak with Animals (Carrion Birds).

Unfortunately I'm not super familiar with the region and could actually use some help with this part, I also don't know which languages to take for the same reason.

If this info is in the Inner Sea World Guide I can try to do some research on it or if you happen to have a good website I can review I'd be more than happy to look it up. I have always wanted to explore Golarion more, which is one of the reasons I'm so interested in this game.

I have spent the majority of my life in Caliphas where I have learned to rule the streets and think on my feet. I am a distant cousin of Beauturne himself.

The way I imagine this is he has known of my existence and situation for some time but wanted to use me to prove a point. Nobles have it in there blood to rule. By rising up from squalor and ruling the local gang for a time I proved that nobles are born to rule the common folk and are innately better than them. If this doesnt sound good to you let me know and I will keep looking. I am having a hard time finding individual family names.

Are we using Ultimate Campaign to establish homes and such? Because that is a whole new can of worms I'd like to look into. It hadn't even occurred to me to crack open that book! Good on you, Harakani, for going that route.

Yazmine Khera wrote:

Yes, however, as we'll be "establishing" a county seat, it might be wise to save any home-building until later. I'm not saying you can't have holdings outside of Lozeri or in Lozeri, but you'll need to manage and visit those holdings, which can eat into your downtime.

For example, Harakani will need to spend some of his downtime traveling between Ascanor and Ravensholm to maintain his holdings there, and let's not forget that the Shudderwood isn't the friendliest of places to travel.

That being said, Ravensholm could be considered a territory of "New Lozeri", or whatever you want to call it, once Harakani's character reestablishes himself there, which would technically give him access to the Viceroy leadership role.

Aha. I think I will hold onto that sort of thing for later knowing that. It makes sense since she doesn't actually own property herself, it's all her family's land and what not.

The Exchange

Mhmm this is all very tempting but I don't think I can do a concept justice anytime soon. I'll be interested to see this unfold however, good luck folks!

*chuckle* Almost as soon as I thought of a rogue I moved on to other things...slayers, inquisitors, bloodragers and more...I just love the idea of the game but I want to hit on a concept that fits the flavor of the game. This is a hard one, a good challenge.

Ooo, I like that.

Ravensholm is about 20-30 miles from the Lorezi and Vieland captials. It's not TOO far from Ascanor.
I was also thinking of using "Bat Form" (Crow Form) to be able to do some sort of regular commute without requiring us to create some sort of highway through the Shudderwood (though that would be awesome)

Zayne Iwatani here. Still around. Got everything but the backstory mostly done. Figured I'd hold off on any major purchases since black onyx will probably be used in copious amounts soonish.

That's a good idea. Technically, the feat says it acts like Beast Shape II for the duration, which is 1 minute/level, but it doesn't restrict you to how many times you can change into your "crow form".

Therefore, I'm going to rule that your character can assume "crow form" indefinitely, to save us the hassle of saying "and every X minutes, I use a standard action to transform back into a crow".

I feel that. I just picked up something like 300g worth of Onyx and went from there, but I may end up grabbing more. Fortunately, because we're both necromancers, we can help one another out. And I've got Scribe Scroll, so just yell if you want some Desecrates when the game gets rolling.

Overhauling Marris, found the opportunity to try out some mechanics close to my heart, but didn't have the tools until I did an in-depth read-through of the Mesmerist.

Oh crap. I was going to use Divine Protection as part of my build, Just looked it up and saw that it was errated down to dirt.

Background::
Scion of the once ruling family of Lozeri, Aldric Beauturne has derived equal challenges and benefits from his family's reduced political stake.

Born to a nephew of the infamous Count, Aldric was raised in a family of some established wealth and at first grew up in a lifestyle of good means. As the family's fortunes turned due to a poisoned family name and premature illness and death of his mother and sister, Aldric was sent outside the county to Odranto where Aldric served as a ward of distant relatives in service of Count Manfray Murlay and later his son Count Conwrest Murlat.

Raised in Ordanto into his teens Aldric learned of the barbarian hordes to the north and the harsh life of warriors marked by constant struggle. Aldric's robust health and large frame gained the young man many admirers and opportunities to hone his skills. As he progressed into manhood news of the passing of his father arrived and Aldric decided it was time to return home and look after his family affairs.

Despite his meager resources Aldric soon flourished in his return to Lozeri. The counties penchant for hunts proved an excellent social scene for Aldric to return to, his skills and power proving to make him a crowd favorite in many circles. Additionally his family name saw him gain some influence with some who saw the fate of the county on a bad course while Aldric's distance to his grand uncle insulated him from the negativity of the counties' former ruler in many cases.

Yet recently Aldric has sensed that his is a path of greater glory. Not content to merely use his power and minor celebrity to earn money Aldric chaffs at the rumours of the counties decay and is enticed by notions of pride that the name Beauturne can mean something good for the area again. A notion that is reinforced by the correspondence of a distant relative...

I have much love for Dex to damage.

That being said, if your character wanders around Ustalav openly flouting the holy symbol of Asmodeus, you're going to make some people very unhappy with you, mostly the worshipers of Desna and Pharasmablahblahblah. Just so you're aware.

Should get along with Chester though, since you guys are Devil worshiping heathens.

Oh the SA part is more an incidental "nice to have" mostly its all about the sweet sweet skills/HP/BAB. THW I don't need the fighter feats per se and I like the slayer abilities plus I feel like it fits the flavor more.

Gaston is actually a very good parallel that I had not thought of despite thinking of Jafar up thread. Apparently Disney is my muse.

Honestly as I was looking at the various submissions I was thinking that we needed to see someone who is a little less socially of a skulk and a bit more "Why hello there Belle..." lol. A brute to aid the brainy mischievous types perhaps.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

While I'm working on the crunch, here's a bit of the background for Vladymir Andachi Tamriv. I'm using the 10 minute background format at the moment, but will try to tie it all together in the end...

Background - Vladymir:

Five background and concept elements important to Vladymir.
1) His pregnant mother arrived late at night in Marian Leigh claiming to have been kidnapped by vampire who held her in a fortress upriver. After giving birth to unwanted Dhampir child, she left him in the custody of a local temple of Irori along with a signet ring the vampire had given her as a ‘betrothal’ gift. Monks give the boy the name Vladymir and instill in him the sense of knowledge being power.

2) Signet ring belonged to branch of Count Andachi’s family who resided in Tamrivena and whose last male descendant disappeared in the mountains near Gallowspire. Vladymir bears a striking resemblance to that descendant. Divination magics confirm the relationship, and Vladymir takes the Andachi name as well as the name of the County seat as an intended honor.

3) Other children at the temple, both because of his inhuman nature and his perceived connection to the failed ruler, take every opportunity to bully and belittle Vladymir. This just spurs his quest for knowledge even more as he is able to make practical use of what he knows about the other children to keep himself from serious harm and even fight back by turning intended tricks and attacks back on the attackers.

4) Vladymir’s quest for gathering knowledge has a tendency to take on something of a single-minded focus and he truly has to focus in order to keep himself from attempting to become a Jack-of-all-Trades as he learns a little of this and a little of that.

5) Vladymir spent a short time at the University of Lepidstadt but he still felt an outsider as both the faculty and other students treated him similarly to how the children at the temple had. Also, as he felt no particular reason to take up fencing just to gain a scar, he became even more ostracized by his classmates. One class he did find fascinating however was on the powers of the mind and how they would be useful in the real world. He excelled at that class and continued exploring that line of though even after he left at the end of the year.

@Jacob Romero: Are you going Words of Power? I know how tempting that level 2 lesser animate spell is.

Well, I've gone mad looking at options.
I really wanted to like Tome Eater. Psychic spells means he could cast in Raven Form... which is SO awesome. But it just didn't click with the concept.
I was looking at martial classes - I think I had the same idea as @PirateDevon, but now there is a Metal Oracle and a Slayer in the mix I don't think there's as much of a need for a fighter.

Tossing up now I can see my top three as:
* Blackblade Kensai Magus: Using the black blade Raven's Claw - and implying Raven's Head was also a family weapon.
* Spellslinger Wizard: Another way of increasing the group's ability to fight. Fits in nicely with the idea that Norrys is meant to be modern. He'd be introducing guns into Ustalav.
* Instructor Wizard: My favourite at the moment. The Ravensholm people were building advanced buildings and messing around with magic when the Kellids were remastering woodworking. They've been on the decline as a people since. I love the idea of Norrys taking power by promising to make them a powerful magical people once more - and given the bonus int that the shifters get this is not a crazy idea. Apprentice Cohort can mind Ravensholm when Norrys is out. Plus, with this and Dynasty Founder I've effectively got Leadership at level 3! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

No and Lesser Animate is level 3.
