Magic for the win!

DM Default |

Here's a question for you all to consider.
My other Second Darkness game had half of its members either go dark or withdraw since its inception, and now I'm left with 3 players.
I am currently considering, to lighten my workload and give the survivors some decent roleplay fuel, to bring them over to this game and make an 8 person game.
I believe Sindorah may have left us as she has not posted in over two weeks and this is her only game.
Thoughts?

Dougal Fairbairn |

Eight people is a lot but in PbP it can work. I am in a game with that many people and it is one of my favorite games. So I have no issue with it. Combat can be a lot easier if the GM does not change things up.

Silvio Errico |

Eight people is a lot of people - it's enough for 2 games! I would actually prefer moving one of us over to the second game rather than merging us all into a single game, and in fact would volunteer myself to do that. The result would be less disruptive, since only one player, not three, would have to readjust to the alternate reality universe. Adventure paths are technically for 4 people, so we'd be playing by the book--we all know Silvio loves that. I do love having Orendel as my Lawful Neutral buddy, but I think he could hold down the fort while I knock some sense in the new rabble. Of course, I'm taking the optimistic view about everyone sticking around as I suggest 2 games of 4.
On the other hand, I totally understand that trimming your workload can be really important! Fewer high-quality games are much better than having more games where you feel drained. And the "realist" view is that life happens, and we'll inevitably go from eight to seven. So I'm okay with this direction also. I'd agree with Dougal's sentiment that it's important to step up the difficulty of combat if we go this route.

Orendel Kellon |

I'm...ambivalent. As has been said, eight's a lot of people. We'd practically be an army! I agree with Silvio's statement that maybe sending one of us to fill out the other group and running two groups of four might be the less disruptive solution, but I'm not opposed to one group of eight if that's the decision we go with. Who's left in the other group?

DM Default |

I've decided to open another recruitment for the second game rather than shuffle players around or cram everyone into one game. You guys got a good chemistry going here, and I'd rather not mess it up.

Silvio Errico |

Thanks for talking it through, and hope you get a good crop of reinforcements for the game!
Totally separate question: You might remember that during the "second round" of recruitment, you asked the players in PM to identify an ally and enemy. At least, I certainly got one of these questions! The ally I invented was a woman named Lady Loris Bellcastle, who happens to be a cyphermage. Now, I was wondering if it would be possible to take advantage of that a couple of ways.
First, I don't know if Loris is someone who would actually be in a position to take on Samaritha Beldusk as an apprentice herself. But I was thinking that Loris could at least help Samaritha get some books, or some access, or other connections, and that would be a substitute for receiving full pay, at least until the Gold Goblin gets off the ground. Thoughts?
Second, I think it would be interesting to start investigating the blot in the sky. It's the sort of thing Silvio might do in his spare time. Is that something we might be able to start doing, perhaps with the help of the cyphermage library?

DM Default |

That sounds like a pretty good idea Silvio, you might want to stop by her place the next time you get a free moment. We'll hash it out in game. But feel free to bring up the idea.
As for studying the blot, that occurs during you off weeks when something terrible isn't happening. Feel free to have your character pursue that and rope in a couple others if you can convince them.

DM Default |

Yay! More orientation shifts at work for me! (sarcasm) But in all seriousness, you will see some slowdown on my part in updates, but please but assured I will not go dark on you or abandon any games. I'll update when I can but between schoolwork, internship work, and work work, I'm gonna be a bit swamped. Should hopefully have more consistent breathing room sometime between one and two weeks.

Dougal Fairbairn |

Thank you for the heads up. It helps knowing :)

Dougal Fairbairn |

Thank you dear :)
Also Cherry you ignored the deity question.

Dougal Fairbairn |

While I am not thrilled about not being at work tonight I am enjoying the dialogue Cheery :D

Dougal Fairbairn |

I am fine with chatting. Dougal has a pretty girl and a comfy place. If I vanish that means the grogginess symptom has kicked in and I passed out. But I should be up for a few more hours since I do not normally get off of work for another three or four hours. Sleep normally does not happen for a few hours after that. Dumb meds are making my brain all sorts of foggy though, i hate it!

Orendel Kellon |

Sorry for the radio silence recently. My job had me working a straight-shot eight days, so to get enough sleep I held off on making major posts until I had a day off.

Silvio Errico |

Those harrow readings are a lot of fun! I might have to take Syeira up on a reading at some point.

Orendel Kellon |

O mighty Syeira! Could you perhaps enlighten me with some tips on how to RP harrowings properly for my Jade Regent character?

Dougal Fairbairn |

Brilliant bit of roleplay ladies :D I may be asking for one later. Hmm, I may even look into a harrow deck for my group. I have a bard who just inherited on in Curse of the Crimson. The fun roleplay to be had!
Also sorry for the lack of posting over the weekend. It was not a good few days.

Syeira Istrati |

I will say that harrow readings require a certain amount of creative interpretation, which, as a very literal person, is a skill I have in short supply. But if you guys are enjoying them, I must be doing something right. Thanks!
Once I get to my laptop, I can post the resources that I typically use for harrow readings, one of which is this brilliant color-coded spreadsheet someone made that gives the meanings of the cards and tells you which ones to interpret if you do the full nine-card spread.
I hope your days are looking better, Dougal. ♥

Orendel Kellon |

Thank you!
Also, I'm thinking of switching Orendel's weapon of choice from a poleaxe (halberd) to a ranseur as we adventure and get new gear...I haven't taken the feats to make the halberd do bludgeoning damage yet, so it doesn't even require me to change Orendel's intended setup at all!

Syeira Istrati |

Here's the spreadsheet: here! (Courtesy of alexperience.) This site also helps me with the quickie three-card readings I've been doing.
Planning on disarming enemies instead of tripping them?

Orendel Kellon |

This'll be handy, thank you! My first attempt at harrowing in Jade Regent was kind of hard because I was trying to do the whole spread at once and couldn't really figure out how to apply the cards' meanings to our situation.
Honestly, it's less what the weapon does and more about whether I want my ensemble to look more like this or like this this.

DM Default |

Updates tomorrow, if I don't collapse. (joke, but seriously glad I have tomorrow off-ish)

Dougal Fairbairn |

So originally I had no mark, it was a charm he held up but I like the idea. I will add a tattoo or brand that appeared on his arm. He would have just kept it hidden until now.

Dougal Fairbairn |

Aww, Cherry you are a sweetheart :D

Orendel Kellon |

Just to let you know, I'll be gone for a couple days from Tuesday to Thursday. I'll update when I can, but feel free to bot me if need be.

Orendel Kellon |

I'm back, folks! BOY was that in interesting little vacation! I went to see the memorial plaque for E. Gary Gygax in Lake Geneva, and as it turns out, the resort I was staying at is where GaryCon was being held at! While we left before I could see the actual Con, I know it's there to go next year. And then we visited The House on the Rock, in all its weird glory. But now I'm back, and I'm posting! :D

DM Default |

Just to keep you all in the loop, during the no-new-notification incident (where forum games weren't alerting folks to updates), I had a member of my family pass on.
As such, I feel it fair to inform you that I updates might take longer than usual (which I know, is plenty long of a wait already) and if you feel the need to drop out of a game I'm DMing or drop me from a game I'm participating in, I understand.
That said, I do hope to update within a couple days as I could use the distraction as the usual business of these events tend to warrant. Thank you for your understanding.
Life moves on eventually. I just need some time.

Silvio Errico |

I am sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you. Take as much time as you need.

Orendel Kellon |

My thoughts are with you as well. Sending you an e-hug with all the hugginess I can muster.
*e-hug*

Dougal Fairbairn |

Take all the time you need. I am very sorry for your lose.
The game can slow down and I am more than willing to continue so long as you are.

Orendel Kellon |

Sorry for the relative radio silence. They scheduled me for ANOTHER eight-day week at work! X(

DM Default |

Relatives are almost all gone and I think I've recovered emotionally. Expect me back in posting form by the end of the week at latest.

Dougal Fairbairn |

That is good to hear. I do have a song I rather like for family visiting.

Silvio Errico |

Hope you get to unwind!
