Elghund dangles his sword on its retaining cord, then takes his hook and looks for a point to secure it to the door (or smash through a window) before attepting to tear the door open from around 15 feet away.

Annalísa flashes Skäne a quick, aggressive looking smile before saying, "Just using my head, whoever is in there might have some information for us."

You take your positions at the fringe of the massacre site as the grapnel is hooked around the spear that bars entry into the carriage. Then when all is in place, Elghund gives it a solid tug and the spear is wrenched clear of the door. With the force of the release the door swings open and you get view of the interior.

What was once a finely appointed carriage has been plundered for all of value... and given a crimson re-decoration. Blood is sprayed across the opened door and interior... and you see why. Reacting with vigor now that the path between them and warmblooded life is opened are two draugr... dead men that walk.

One has it's chest cavity rent asunder and the second has it's chest drenched red from an opened throat. Vacant eyes and slack faces turn towards you as the draugr groan with open mouthed intent and begin to lurch towards you...

Full day meeting today - will have initiative and map when I get home tonight :)

As the unliving occupants of the carriage shamble forth from the gloom, Skäne mutters under his breath;

"Draugr... Skitt!"

He then clangs his ax against his shield in an attempt to attract the draugr's attention to him;

"Hoi! Kommen here you kamphundr oskilgetinnr!"

Halla: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

The zombies react with vigor, leaving only the raven haired and quiet woman among you to pre-empt their charge...

Action Tracker (Round 1): Halla, Ulfen Zombies, Elghund, Rikka, Skane, Annalisa, Klo

I have assumed positions on the map - hopefully they are relatively in line with where you'd set-up? If not, please just let me know.

Map - Zombies are in the carriage at J-4/5

The way this works is that the tracker shows the initiative order for the round. If your name is in bold, you haven't acted this round - once you have I'll update and un-bold your name in the tracker.
In this instance, Halla is up - then the zombies. Please post when you can (out of order if needs be) and I'll collate them in the right order when I do an update.
Lastly, I can only do maps at home (like now) so sometimes I'll need to update without them.
Otherwise - have at!

Rikka sidesteps around the frozen Ulfen warrior to get a better view of the foul creatures. It is impossible to mistake these abominations for living men. She calls up words of power and a slender shaft of moonlight finds a hole in the clouds and strikes the undead on its rotting pate.

Rikka will target an unengaged Zombie, if possible. If not, then the nearest one. I'm assuming since you called them Draugr/Zombies that we don't need to roll to determine they are undead. If I'm wrong on that, please let me know.

Kló spends a surprised moment rooted in place – so much like the trees Rikka has compared him to time and again. Seeing the frozen wave of undead crash against his fledgeling group's small shield wall seems to uproot him.

In a spray of snow, Kló crashes through the spot now absent of the two halves of the orc's frozen foe. Roaring in wordless ferocity, he drives his spear into the side of the remaining thing's head.

Klo's shortspear drives through the draugr's head and out the others side in a jagged and powerful thrust. The once living ulfen jerks slightly before going slack and dragging Klo's shortspear towards the ground. The clearing before the carriage grows quiet once more and you feel the dark pressing back in around you.

Combat over... two crits'll do.

A thin trail of Draugr blood from the explosive head wound speckles the sorceress' face. She wipes it away unconcerned, leaving a subtle smear. Rikka taps Riimukirjain to get its attention, points to the Druid's gore-streaked 'cousin', and advises her weapon, "That is how you should strike. Do that and I'll be well pleased."

Rikka bumps the boar-spear's blade against the iron head of Kló's spear and the orc's falchion as a nod to their victories.

Vikingr 'fist bump' FTW.

Seriously... that was an explosive first encounter. :)

Kló puts a boot on the thing's head and rips his spear free. "Abominations," he mutters as he looks at the cold, black, thick blood painting the spear-head.

He frowns as the small woman instructs her spear, but nods to the spear-bump.

The quick combat hadn't even last long enough to work up a sweat, but Kló's adrenaline thundered in his veins, his breath coming in slow, deep pulls that fill the air with thick mist.

He considers the rest of his companions as he leans down to clean the spear, making eye contact with each person in turn. He'd carried his doubts about the team through their long moonlit march, but now…

"Well fought. We may survive this thing."

Female Human (Ulfen) Barbarian/1

Annalísa nods her head, "Indeed."

HP 35/39 | AC 16 CMD 17 | Fort +7 Reflex +1 Will +5 | Perception +7 Initiative +1

Spear cleaned, Kló stows it in its leather sleeve on his back, looking at the ambush site, the frozen abominations (all three pieces of them thanks to Elghund), the statue of an ulfen, then to where the sun should crest the horizon.

"Is there more we can learn here? If the point of leaving early was to gain time on our quarry, then we should keep after them."

Is there any reason to believe the sword encased in ice on the ground (removed from the frozen Ulfen) is worth us scavenging? Does it look cold iron or masterwork?
Appraise (if its necessary to tell) 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (11) + 0 = 11 <-- that's surprisingly not bad. :)

The statue has chainmail on (and possibly other goodies) in case anyone wants that. I could try melting the ice to free him up. I'd have to use a spell or two to do it but it'd be a lot quicker than trying to chip him out or start a conventional fire.

I'm mostly concerned about how long that would take, but if it's gear that people can/want to use, I'm fine waiting.

And I'd surely like to conserve our sorceress's firepower (get it... FIRE-power? eh? EH?) for actual encounters, if possible.

Elghund wipes the gore from his blade before carefully drying it, "Frost and ice can make it stick in its cover" he suggests as an aside.

He then rummages through the caravan.
"Need to find some of the womans things, get her scent, easier to track"

After turning over the contents of this caravan, if he can't find any of her items he will go through the wrecked one. He's also looking for any spare weapons, valuables, bandit bodies that might bear insignia, or any fallen fey creatures.

Minor Crab-beast

Elghund looks to the interior of the carriage and finds at first but gore and filth... the contents of the carriage having been thoroughly looted. But then he finds a small oaken jewelry box under one of the seats. He also gets a melange of scents... fear, rage, blood, death... but under the most recent and acrid tones is one bedded deep into the carriage - that of the lady herself.

Jewelry Box Contents:
The box is of simple design, but contains Lady Argentea’s signet ring, a pair of silver earrings, a set of pearl-inlaid bracelets, assorted gold and silver necklaces and a sapphire pendant.

Looking to the iced Ulfen Klo sees that the chainmail is of stout but not exceptional make. The iron that the sword comprises of is chilled by it's icy prison... but it does not appear to be cold iron. However despite a workmanlike hilt, the blade does appear to be of very good quality.

Apart from the weapon borne by the man in ice, the rest of the field has been looted entire and there is nothing more to be had.

Just need confirmation of how you're freeing the man from the ice.

Rikka plants her spear decisively in a frozen hummock and props the dismembered arm with sword against the frozen body. She gives the ulfen warrior a small nod, "Sorry about this, friend, time drives us."

The sorceress utters a simple string of words in an ancient tongue and splays her hands sideways. White fire dances across the ice and burns into it as if it were a cord of wood, Rikka teases the flames up the frozen figure with subtle gestures and coaxes it to burn fiercely with words in a hissing and popping language. The ice snaps and fissures as the ghostly white flames do their work.

The conjured flame takes a moment to effect the ice, but soon cuts through and peels back the frozen layer from the ulfen man. After the power is spent, there is still some ice remaining around the body and it has been charred by the experience - but with an application of percussive encouragement the body is torn free of the icy prison. As seen from outside the ice, the chainmail worn by the guard is salvageable and the longsword is of good make. Masterwork longsword

On the subject of tracks, any idea how many people, how many 'non-people', how fast they are moving, and how far ahead of us they are (hours?)

Minor Crab-beast

All that is willed to be done has been done at the massacre site and your path ahead takes you below and under the canopy of the Grungir. Once there the full force of winter is arrayed against you, and the darkness deepens further with the loss of the moon's shining light.

Temperatures drop below freezing and there is constantly falling snow around you. Additionally, 6 inches of snow cover the ground, making your footfalls heavy and making you force your feet forward to move. Elghund and Annalisa's dog make easy work of the trail... but those less attuned to travel without light struggle even with the assistance of muffled light cast off by ensorcelled items.

The scent trail of the Lady is strong, though mingled in with a range of other scents. Sweat and blood are combined with the unmistakeable scent of humans. There is also a more intangible hint and threat of a softer and less easily discerned smell. Judging by the path Elghund places their numbers at between eight and twenty mortal souls... though he cannot ken a reliable idea of the fey-touched that travel at their hips. They are well ahead of the group, between one and two days.

Overland travel rates are reduced by half. The snow reduces visibility by half, imposing a –4 penalty on Perception checks and
ranged attacks. The temperatures inside the winter pocket are
considered cold. Depth of shadows are similar to before, but if you don't have the light source proudly thrust outward - you'll be stumbling along and stubbing toes - still able to follow the lead though.

A short distance and maybe fifteen minutes after the trail enters the full expanse of the Border Wood, you pass through a small clearing among the taller trees before continuing uphill and out of sight. A large chest lies half-buried in the snow, apparently dropped or discarded by those who hastily passed this way.

Elghund warily approaches it and hisses a warning backwards... he has spied a trip rope tied off and mostly buried in the snow - seemingly rigged to cause damage of some kind to those that draw near, though he is unable to trace the full extent of the rope to see where it leads to...

You're confident you can trigger it from a short distance through thrown branch if you care to?

HP 35/39 | AC 16 CMD 17 | Fort +7 Reflex +1 Will +5 | Perception +7 Initiative +1

Kló considers the orc's warning, "I'm curious about the chest's contents. But I'm more concerned that this trap might be rigged to give warning to our quarry of our pursuit."

He frowns, then looks over at the small blond-haired woman, "Does the trap have an arcane component?"

Male Human (Ulfen) Vigamaðr-Lochlannach (Fighter - Vikingr) 8 | HP: 64/83 | AC: 29 T 12 FF 27 | Saves: Fort +10, Ref +4, Will +5 | CMD: 26, CMB: +12 | Init: +3 | Perception +3| 20ft. Move | Rage 0/17

Dragging his heavily armoured self through the drifting snow, Skäne ends up nearer the back of the group afore long. After several curse filled falls he strikes up a sunrod and angrily ploughs on.

By the time the company arrive at the chest, the black mood of the vikingr has only worsened...

"Trap? Those huglausi basterds!"

huglausi = cowardly

The warrior wipes icicles from his beard as he breathes hard.

"Set it off. Let them komm..."

"They a long way in front, reckon they know people following, reckon this just one more thing to hurt followers. Like Skane says, huglausi"

Elghund unravels his rope and hook once more as he moves the party well back, and using as much of the 50' rope as he is able, stands well clear of the likely trap catchment as he pulls the tripwire.

Preferrably behind a tree or the like

Minor Crab-beast

Elghund lets out rope and casts it forward where it brushes against the taut corded rope hidden within the snow. It releases without any noise to accompany it but a creak and a swooshing sound of a heavy object rushing through the air. Above you high in the trees a spiked tree-trunk has been released and begun it's descent... gathering momentum and speed as it ploughs through the air upon a murderous path.

Luckily the path of destruction is devoid of occupants and instead it crashes into the trunk of a tree at the end of it's arc and then lies still. A wet thump of dislodged snow hits the earth and there is a fluttering of falling snowflakes following... but now that the trap is spent the area seems safe.

The passage of the log knocked the chest open... revealing that it is empty, but you also notice that the trunk is half-buried in the earth.

That's...nasty

The Orc sniggers to himself, the tone of it somehow malicious. He moves back to the chest and investigates further, where possible avoiding handling the object directly, but rather continuing to hook and rope.

He stays low to the ground as he does so, in case any enemies have been drawn to the sound.

"Why half bury the box? a trap for those following?"
