You head to the other door and after a moment fussing with the stone door it opens easily enough. Before you stick your light source to view the room you notice two things. The sound of dripping water and the air smells quite a bit fresher in this chamber than some of the others you've breached thus far.
Each corner of this room holds a stone obelisk carved with hieroglyphs. The obelisks surround a golden circle engraved in the center of the floor. The Hieroglyphs are not in the ancient Osirion style that you've come accustom to seeing. (DC:15 knowledge Arcana, and/or DC:20 plains, or read magic) One of the Obelisk grows moss and has condensation all over it. One seemingly has scorch marks and heat radiates from it. The remaining two seem normal except from the southeast corner's obelisk, a cool breeze occasionally shifts in your direction.
Jawhar
|
"Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. Is this some type of summoning circle?"
Jawhar will cast Read Magic.
| lucklesshero |
After casting read magic, Jawhar can clearly read the hieroglyphs. Jawhar learns that each of the obelisks is connected to one of the four elements—air, earth, fire, and water—and were used to summon elementals to assist in the construction of the pyramid.
Jawhar
|
"This side of the pyramid appears to be the servant's wing. We killed the chauffeurs, here we have the engineers, the big skeleton was probably the janitor.
I guess we should search the room more thoroughly, though I think avoiding the circle might be a good idea."
Jawhar will casually look around the edges of the room for objects hidden in the shadows as his light reveals them.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Craggark
|
Craggark fingers his flask of alchemist’s fire in his hand as he moves gingerly in the room.
”It could be useful,” he mutters to no one specifically as he glances around.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
I love rolling dice.
Torvald Stonecask
|
"This is outside my area of expertise, but isn't summoning creatures of the Great Beyond for tasks very expensive?" Torvald examines the obelisks with interest, though he heeds Jawhar's warning and avoids the circle.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay
|
"It's fascinating," Jamir says as he wanders around the room, carefully avoiding the circle after Jawhar's warning. "After all these years, these stones are still powered and working, at least somewhat."
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Mythryndyr
|
Seeing his friends have the searching covered, he covers them with his bow from the doorway...
Nodding to Jawhar, he says, "Perhaps...but why would a janitor have a leopard for a pet?"
Torvald Stonecask
|
"I think Jawhar was joking, Myth," Torvald chuckles. "That room had a strong hunting motif, perhaps he was a favored son or servant who loved hunting?"
Torvald starts to extend a hand towards the scorched obelisk, then catches himself and yanks it back.
Jawhar
|
"Ok, so he was the huntmaster, that seems plausible. I guess we haven't found the janitor's closet yet."
If there is nothing in here, I suggest we cintinue down the hallway next
| lucklesshero |
Both Torvald and Jamir notice the outline of a hard to notice campartment on the side of the warm obelisk. It’s outline suggest a 1ft wide by 10” height drawer is hidden in the obelisk.
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay
|
Jamir clears his throat.
"Ah, gentlemen, if the variety show is nearing an intermission, perhaps we might wish to investigate this secret compartment? Examine it for magic, traps, or magical traps? Very small undead horrors? Tiny invulnerable constructs? That sort of thing, yes?"
Analia Frostburn
|
Lia casts detect magic and looks over the compartment at Jamir's request.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Finding the compartment was hard enough that it may be impossible to find a trap if there is one. The best we can roll is a 29, and Torvald already got a 27
Torvald Stonecask
|
Hunkering down to get a better look at the compartment door, Torvald carefully blows away any accumulated dust.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Craggark
|
Craggark watches with interest from the corner of the room while rolling his flask of alchemist's fire between his fingers.
"I don't know anything about summoning, but I do know the four elements when I see them," he says simply.
| lucklesshero |
You don't find that the compartment is trapped. You only know what Analia Jawhar has told you about the obelisk. Analia detects that all four obelisk have conjuration magic properties and the markings on the floor radiate conjuration and abjuration properties.
Jawhar
|
Jawhar steps out into the hallway. "Why would anyone leave treasure in a compartment attached to a summoning circle? It is probably part of the summoning ritual or a gate that will shoot a jet of flame into the room.
Leave well enough alone and let's go down the hallway."
Analia Frostburn
|
"I completely agree with Jawhar. Let's leave and search elsewhere." Lia says as she hurriedly follows the priest out into the hall.
Mythryndyr
|
Myth shrugs. "If we summon anything, it's bound to be an elemental...might be worth it though...this place has been so devoid of treasure, there might be something valuable in that compartment..."
| lucklesshero |
Does the compartment appear to be locked?
No way to tell unless you try to touch it or manipulate in someway. There's no obvious lock hanging from it.
Torvald Stonecask
|
"You two picked the wrong profession for being sensible," the dwarf calls to Jawhar and Analia, never taking his eyes off the compartment. "Sensible people don't jump into trapped tombs for a living. Would it make everyone feel better if we gave it a poke from a distance? Myth could shoot it with one of his blunt arrows since we lack a pole."
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay
|
Do not make me go full kender just to get this drawer open. It won't be pretty.
Jamir's laugh booms out as Lia and Jawhar try to draw the party away from the secret compartment.
"Now, now, Master Torvald! If we listen to our wizard and priest, we are far more likely to survive this ancient deathtrap and return to Absalom in good health!"
He grins and tips the dwarf a wink.
"Of course, we will all be much poorer for it. And if we continue following this sort of sensible advice, we will die in our beds of old age." The halfling shudders, and shakes his head in horror at the image. "No, that will not do at all. If you or Mythryndyr do not work out a way to open the compartment safely, I swear I shall beat it open with a rock before we leave this room!"
Torvald Stonecask
|
I really do think we should get a little distance, this seems like a pretty obvious summoning trap.
| lucklesshero |
An arrow is pointed at the 'heat obelisk' with the compartment. Try to figure out what you're going to do today ok? If you leave nothing happens. If no one wants to touch or manipulate any of the obelisk, we'll move on.
Craggark
|
"It is a hidden compartment," Craggark suggests. "Maybe the skinflint pharaoh didn't want people to find it. Maybe it's a control panel for the summoning circle. I don't know - we are Pathfinders, right? It's not 'avoid, report, and cooperate'. All that being said, I'm going to stand over here while you poke at it." Craggark moves over to the doors of the chamber.
Torvald Stonecask
|
"Probably a good idea if everyone does the same," Torvald mutters. "Myth, let me help you out there..."
Aid Another (Disable Device): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
I believe that gives Myth a +15, so here's hoping...
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay
|
"That is only sensible, Torvald. I will stand a little back from the column with the compartment, and also - in light of Jawhar's warning - a little back from the circle in the center of... "
Jamir scowls as he looks between the circle at the center of the room, the columns, and the walls.
"Have any of you noticed," he says slowly, "that this room is just small enough that it is impossible to stand more than ten feet from the circle without being stuck behind a column? It is almost as though the entire room had been designed to make it difficult to maneuver out of reach of the elementals that were summoned here." He chuckles drily. "But that would be ridiculous."
Jamir chuckles again, and then - rapier drawn - cautiously steps between the southeast column and the east wall. He gives the others a questioning look.
"What? I may not wish to die of old age, but that does not mean I am eager to face Pharasma today!"
I have placed Jamir's token on the map.
Mythryndyr
|
Myth sighs. "I'll open it...it's too small to contain a mummy..."
yth will keep one hand on his bow and will try to simply open the compartment with the other...if he has any trouble with it, he'll pull out his tools...
Disable Device: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 13 + 2 = 32 (only if needed)

curiosity killed the...well lets see...
Myth and Torvald work on opening the compartment. They find it relatively easy to open and un-trapped except, as soon as any contact is made with the obelisk or compartment a being of pure flame is suddenly and instantly summoned inside the summoning circle. It doesn't seem happy to be called from it's home plane.
fire guy initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 let some of you roll your own initiatives, I will roll any that weren't rolled later tonight, when I post again. there's no surprise round for anyone.

Jamir gasps in astonished delight at the sudden appearance of the flaming creature, then recognizes its grim hostile stance, apparently universal across the planes.
It is only to be expected, of course, but it would be nice if just once we were to meet a magical being from a faraway land who does not want to kill us on sight.
"Jawhar! Lia! You see, I was right! If Mythryndyr had not opened the secret compartment, we would have missed this opportunity altogether!"

Jawhar turns to look at Lia and shakes his head. "Should we just close the door?"
"I think that is an excellent idea..." and then after a brief pause "but I think our boys are really sweet and I would hate to loose them. We better step in and help."
Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

just so you know why you missed Torvald, if the corner the Elemental tried to hit you around provided cover (and it did you can see the -4 I took off it's attack roll) then moving further behind the obelisk most certainly warrants improved cover. ( i'm not doubling the bonus but I'm kicking it up 50% to +6) 19 is not enough to hit it's touch ACfrom your current position. Only improved precise shot, would eliminate this penalty or more accurately, bonus to your opponent's AC.
Torvald throws his flask of icy madness but part of it strikes the obelisk that is nearly all the way between him and his target. miss 1 range increment: 1d8 ⇒ 1 and lands in the square in front of Torvald splashing both him and the elemental with the icy substance.
