Rise of the Runelords - GM Pablo (Inactive)

Game Master Stetrix

Something is afoot in Varisia. There have been a series of odd murders in a small town on the west coast called Sand Point and more recently the capital Magnimar, where even the lord-mayor was a target. A cult of serial murderers called the Skinsaw Men was uncovered and stopped. We have also received reports of more activity along the border.

I would like you to go see the lord-mayor of Magnimar. Assure him the Pathfinder society will do what we can to help him. Investigate these goings on and see if there is a common thread to all this unrest. We have a lot of interests in Varisia and would like to maintain the good graces of the government. I doubt the lord mayor will have you sitting around for long. It is a big place and inevitably something will need attention.

So how does that sound? A mission without a precise goal and with no guarantee of coin. Ha! Are you up for it?

Flipper returns with the trident and somehow lets you know there are passages in the water to the east and west rooms.

+1 Large Adamantine Vicious Trident
2d6 + Str bonus + 2d6 vicious damage to target and 1d6 to Lumpy

Fernleaf will use the gloves of Recon and check inside the other rooms (all charges used for the day).

C14 This narrow chamber looks empty save for a long, ten-foot-wide pool.

C15 A pool of water sits against the wall to the west of this chamber, with a set of steps leading down into it along the pool's east side. Opposite the steps is an alcove in which rises a fantastically detailed scale model of Skull's Crossing. The five skulls along its face seem to be actual human skulls, the bone polished to a gleaming sheen. A statue of a scorpion covered in skulls is near the stairs.

C16 To open the doors will take about 10 minutes of work to remove all the skulls stacked here. This narrow chamber ends at two curved alcoves, one to the east and one to the west. Each alcove
is enclosed by a dull iron portcullis. A winch next to each provides a way to raise or lower the gates. Beyond each portcullis a circle of runes glows with a faint orange light on the floor. Inside the circle to the west is a pile of crimson ash, while inside the circle to the east is curled what appears to be a long-dead devil, its flesh taut and dry on its bones.

Uh, aren't we here to fix the flood gates? I didn't come here to mess with any devils.

Scarab Sages

Male Human Magus L8/Brawler L1/Bloodrager L1

I have feeling that the mechanisms for controlling the dam might be beyond the portcullises. We'll have to investigate. Perhaps the devils are there to keep people out of the workings.

The devil is in the details!

Fernleaf takes twenty on all the doors - no traps not locked as far as he can tell.

Cast BS from wand. Cast Shield from memory just before opening the door.

Silver Crusade

Well, there's no guarantee the mechanism to open the floodgates is mechanical. It could be magic, and thus involve devils.

Where do you want to go - who is opening door? Any other spells?

Dark Archive

Male Halfling Rogue L2

I suspect that the devils are what controlled the gate. When something happened to them, the gates did not work right.

Tanks to the front and onward ho!

Anyone have knowledge of devils? Other than having to use cold-iron on the one in the underground city of gold, I don't know anything else. Fernleaf open the door and let us into the room, Fahari first.
I am switching to cold-iron bullets. When does Lumpy come back?

Let's investigate the south last.

Dark Archive

East or west rooms?

-Posted with Wayfinder

I vote South unless you have a good reason. If the devils control the gates lets get it over with, these buffs aren't going to last forever.

Silver Crusade

I don't have any solid facts on what controls the gate. I am still in "fling ideas at the wall and see what sticks" mode.

Open South? You all look lined up, who's got door?

You can't it is in the room see map

KN Arcana, KN Spell craft KN Planes checks to get more info if you want.

FYI it is an easier DC if you actually look for yourselves and not 2nd hand from what Fernleaf saw.

Sorry! Got ahead of myself. Thought Fern opened the door. Detect Magic on the door.

No magic on any doors. Fernleaf found no traps and they are not locked.

From Fernleaf's descriptions you can surmise a few things:
1. The two circle of runes that glow with a faint orange light on the floor are somekind of magic circle to contain a creature.
2. If all the runes are functioning properly any trapped creature would be unable to escape, attack or use any spells outside of the circle.

From Fernleaf's description you are not sure of the type of devil (or possibly demon trapped), but think it may be close to death or dead. The ash in the other circle is probably the remains of another trapped creature.

Fernleaf said he opens the door. In post above.^^^^^^

OK door opened. move in if you want.

Silver Crusade

I'll move inside and look closer once someone else moves in. No sign this triggers the gates?

Cela sends in Fahari...and he stands there.
"Meoooow?"

The creature on the East end looks up.
"Save me..."

Anyone can make a KN planes check by looking in for themselves now to identify the creaure

It is a Pit Fiend, one of the most powerful Devils, but it looks to be horribly emaciated and seems near death...if that is possible. "Free me..."

Silver Crusade

"...bloody hell.

Don't talk to it, don't help it, don't look at it, don't believe anything it says or what it looks like. Freeing that thing onto the Prime Material would be a greater disaster than the dam breaching."

So was the thing in the city of gold a demon or a devil?

Dark Archive

"Realease me you f++$ing half breed welp! I have been trapped here for 10,000 years!!!"

The one in City of Gold was a demon. Devils don't like silver.

We will release you in exchange for a very legal and binding contractual obligation to be decided upon by the group. You have already agreed to "anything" and we have witnesses. You will use every means available to grant us three requests of our choosing including time of choosing. If you agree, we will release you. You must never do harm to any person or creature you see before you.

Ready an action to flee if anyone pitches a deal to it.

You should know by now that neither Buchart nor Fernleaf have any intention of entering into, honoring or fulfilling a contract with a devil. Well, I guess I can only speak for Buchart. Silver? Arrows only. Thought I had a silver dagger, too, but...that wouldn't do either!

Sekkim is pretty sure that if you try to trick it, it will try to trick you, and that it will win that particular "trick" battle.

I got a bad feeling about this.

Buchart will have as good a look at the circles as possible. Are the runes Thessalonian (a language that Buchart knows)? Detecting Magic, of coarse. Then he intends to have a look at the pile of ashes, too.

Let's have a look at the other alcove, shall we?
