Over the next couple of days most people in town treat you all pretty well and everyone seems to know your names. Free food and drink are a common occurrence. You recieve 70% market value from Sevah at Sevah's Armory for the weapons you stripped off the dead goblins. Unfortunately she has no use for stinky, poor quality goblin armor.
Three days after the goblin attack, as your gathered at the breakfast table at the Rusty Dragon, in walks Sheriff Hemlock. "There they are," He says. "All of ya's in one place too. Couldn't be luckier." He walks over and sits down at the table with everyone. "Let me introduce myself to those of you who don't know who I am. My names Belor Hemlock, I'm the sheriff of Sandpoint. I'm sorry to interrupt your breakfast but I was hoping I could get you all to help me out with something."
Narvolo |
"Narvolo says hello. My name is Narvolo, and you can call me Narvolo. It is my name. Sit and eat." Narvolo goes back to eating (something he's quite good at).
Nicolae "Nic" Plamen |
Feeling a little nervous around the sheriff, Nic tries to hide it. The caravan often had less than friendly visits from local authorities over the years. One too many wagoneers made advances on local girls that failed to sit well with their fathers. Nic himself had one or two such unfortunate misunderstandings.
Greetings to you Sheriff. We kindly offer you to share in our meal, but you should be quick, for between Narvolo and Kus-Kus, we find we rarely leave scrap nor morsel behind, yeh. Perhaps you would take a drink with us, and tell us more about how we may be of help to you today, ja. Nic offers to pour a mug from the pitcher at the table, taking the mug he has not yet used.
"I have behaved myself, I've tried not to even notice the number of pretty ladies in town. My studies, that is what I need right now. That, and to restock my supplies."
jimibones83 |
"Well, as early as it is, Father Zantus has already made a trip to see me. Apparently Ezakien Tobyn's Valut's been desecrated and the door hangs open. I figure maybe there's a goblin trapped inside somehow, but Father Zantus fears the worst. I've got guards, but who better to take on a ride along than Sandpoint's newest hero's."
Nicolae "Nic" Plamen |
Well, if there are to be more goblins in the town, then we would be very much the happier to help out Nic replies, glancing to the others. The good father he was kind enough to help me with my wounds during the recent fight, so I feel it is only right that I should be returning the favor, ja.
"It is never good to owe a man of the cloth, but it is always better to be having a few marks in your favor with them whenever possible."
Count me in, good sheriff, if you need me I will help. Turning to the others, What say you sirs? And little drake of course.
Kus-Kus |
Kus-Kus kicks back in his chair, leaning on the hind legs as he sips his drink. "Not me! I helped the old man during the festival when he fixed me up. I don't owe him a blasted--"
The kobold paused, tipping his head back as he thought. Helping this town did come with it's advantages... he'd gotten quite a good bit of free stuff. He wasn't fond of this 'hero' title; never considered himself that. Buuuuuuuut...
"...alright, Baldy. I'll tag along. Can't see the harm in it. Might wanna bring a dog though. The little things could be anywhere, and a mutt would sniff them out fast."
Narvolo |
"Dey decorated da door and it is open? What is problem? Let Narvolo see if Narvolo can decorate it too." Narvolo gets up and prepares to follow Belor Hemlock. This town sure is strange. They decorate doors and want us to help. And I thought the festival was over!
Kerak, the Crab King |
"I've not heard any news from the waterfront, so I suppose I can protect the inland folk a bit while I'm here. Kerak, the Crab King, at your service." Kerak says with a very clumsy flourish. "Grip! There's work to do. Land pirates!" the crab simply clatters his pincers and waves around his eye stalks, probably hoping for scraps.

Nicolae "Nic" Plamen |
Well good Sheriff, it seems you have found yourself your heroes once more. Let us wrap up here and be on our way, ja.
"Heroes or labars, so it is with the gavvers. Like always we will do if there is trouble. You stay safe, the village stay safe, we not so much, but it is such to be easier to pay survivors, yeh. The ffolk are useful when needed, discarded when not, neh."
Nic takes a few pieces of bacon and a piece of toast in hand, Let us go to gather our things. We will meet you back here in a few minutes, ja. He stops at the bar to request and down a quick mug of weak wine, to wash away the food and then heads upstairs. He leaves a few of the things he won't need in his room, clothing and camp gear, then goes back downstairs to await the others with the sheriff.
Nic never did get that padlock, 20 gp seems a bit of a price for a novice to afford. He will just hide his valuables inside his mattress and hope for the best.

Kus-Kus |
Kus-Kus would appreciate the ride, for what it's worth.
Kus-Kus pulled out a shortspear, poked Eleazar with the blunt end of it and scowling at him. "That all you care about is coin? You gotta shift that perspective. In my old tribe, we had a saying: 'Junk only exists for the wealthy.' And as kobolds, we weren't anything, but. Gratitude is plenty pay, trust me. After all, 'meiko's put us up for the week without pay. And the whole town's buzzying about with you all as the subject."
Putting the spear away, Kus-Kus tapped at the side of his head with his claw. "Think, foppy. It may not glitter, but it's worth plenty."
Nicolae "Nic" Plamen |
A cart and donkey are a little outside my means right now, little drake, but I am thanking you for the advice, da. You know, I once heard tell of a man in Korvosa that kept goblins as servants and helpers, that is until they ate him or some such mishap... maybe, no I think never mind on that thought, ja.
Away from the sheriff, Nic agrees, The more the gavver and the gavani like us, the better it is all round. We are not all being natives here, so we must provide services useful to these peoples, and these peoples will be useful to us in return, neh.
Narvolo |
"In dis land, yu gotta make da money first. Den when yu get da money, yu get da power. Den when yu get da power, den yu get da women. So, if dis lead to money, den power, den women, Narvolo will do it."
See the Narvolo training video for further details.

Jokingly, Nic comments, Perhaps Master Wheelock, you can keep an accounting, neh. Say one copper per thrust, one silver per kill, ja. Once all is said and done, you could deliver a bill to the town council, mayor, whoever is in charge here, da. They can subtract what has been credited to you, and settle up the differences, neh. Everyone is the winner, and we will accompany you as witnesses, and enjoy the show. Mistah.
Kus-Kus |
Kus-Kus takes a little while to look at Nic, before cocking his head to one side. "I've been meaning to ask; what the heck are you saying? It sounds like language, but not one I've heard before."
Nicolae "Nic" Plamen |
Nic replies to Kus-Kus, apparently used to the confusion. Speaking slowly, thinking of his responses, he answers in Taldan common. Little drake, I was born Varisian. I was raised in slums of Magnimar, speaking gutter Varsii. I was sold to many trade caravans and learned their words too. I learned Taldan (common) later as an adult. I learned the languages of magic (Draconic) and Chelaxian (Infernal & Halfling) before I received study in the "trade tongue" (common). This was to keep me tied to my masters. I am older and free now. Taldan remains difficult to me. My native tongue sometimes twists my speech. My tongue runs faster than my mind, a master always said. I am sorry to everyone for this.

Hemlock allows everyone to finish their plates and gather their things and then walks you all to the cathedral, where Father Zantus waits your arrival. The priest leads you to the vault of interest, but afterward the sheriff asks him to return to the church.

The map is completely disproportionate to the book so to compensate we will use 4 squares as a singe square.
Narvolo |
Are those squares supposed to be 5'? If so, then our icons are huge in relation to it on the map. Unsure how to move until I know.
Narvolo |
Narvolo moves inside slowly. "Narvolo first person. Told ya green man!"
Nicolae "Nic" Plamen |
Nic will hold in his current position and cast a 10' square of four lights before the statue against the far wall of the crypt Range 120' Dancing Lights SA
Guys I am casting now the lights to give you sight in the darkness, ja.
Nic otherwise draws his staff and waits

This is where having those little colored symbols for each encounter comes in handy.
Kerak, the Crab King |
Kerak draws his greataxe and moves in next to the barbarian, Grip trailing along behind. "See anything?"
posting mobile, requesting a move.

Nic moves into the chambers, standing near the northwestern unopened sarcophagi, ready with staff in hand to swing should one come rising out of the stone tomb.
I am not for seeing signs of the goblins, perhaps they did flee these guardians, yeh.
The dancing lights remain stationary before the statue, providing torch-like illumination for that part of the chamber.

Nic, looking at the room, slowly moves the lights of his spell around the area, to give the group help with checking for clues as to what happened here.
Why would your goblins steal only this one man's remains? This Tobyn fellow. If it was for to be in soup, why not to take these guardians as well, ja? Something seems strange here, I think, neh
Narvolo |
Narvolo looks at the skeletons and takes anything useful, including weapons/armor.
jimibones83 |
Narvolo finds nothing of use. The skeletons attacked with natural attacks.
@Nic "Tobyn was the priest of the old cathedral before it burnt down. He was well liked by the citizens of Sandpoint." He pauses for a moment, "With the recent attack, I hate to add this to their worries. I'd appreciate if this information stayed between us for now, give me a chance to figure out whats going on less it causes a panic."
Narvolo |
"Narvolo no have worries. Dey dead. Why worry?"
Nicolae "Nic" Plamen |
It will be as you wish good Sheriff. We are all staying at the Rusty Dragon, ja. It will be easy there to keep us informed as you desire. We do not need to share your secrets with others, favors for favors for friends, da.
If the examination of the crypt is finished, Nic will allow his spell to expire and step out into the light and fresh air.
jimibones83 |
Hemlock picks up the robe and ponders for a moment. Well, I don't know what they would want with a dead priests bones, but to me it seems no coincidence that the goblins raided and his bodies missin. Seems like a little misdirection to me. If you guys come up with any ideas as to what might have happened, be sure to stop by the garrison and see me." With that he directs everyone outside and seals the door.
On your way back to the Dragon Eleazar is approached by a pretty young lass named Shayliss Vinder. "Your Eleazar yes? My names Shayliss. I have a bit of a problem, though a strong man like you could certainly make easy work of it."
jimibones83 |
"It's actually quite urgent, but it would be no problem for you I'm certain. See there's this giant rat in the cellar and my father wont listen to me. He's to worried about my sister fooling around then he is my safety! I hate rats, and this ones nearly the size of a dog. I'm sure a goblin slayer such as yourself can easily get the critter out of my cellar though. You could meet your friends at the Dragon, it will only take a few minutes."
