Honestly it's good for anyone. Since there's no encumbrance or armor check, there's no penalty for using it, even if nonproficient. Daelric should probably be looking into getting a magic shield at some point - so this is not great for him because it can't be enchanted to higher bonuses. I can take it, but my AC is going to be garbage forever, so this is not a huge benefit to me. It is probably better for someone who is more likely to do melee - Volkar, for instance, could use his battle axe in one hand and this shield in the other, even though alchemists usually aren't proficient with shields. Since his current AC is only slightly above garbage, but he often melees after throwing bombs, that might be a good choice. Andrezi could use it if he decides to do more melee, but as our last couple of encounters showed, he tends to do more channeling in the hard fights.

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

I could see Volkar getting some good use out of it for all of the reasons you mention. And since it isn't technically a shield, I will allow it to be used with no penalties.
What say you, Volkar? Andrezi?

Male Varisan Human Cleric (Varisian Pilgrim) of Desna 6 | HP 43/43 | AC 18 T 13 FF 15 | Fort+7 Ref +6 Will +10 (+11) | Initiative +3 | Perception +4 | Channel Energy 7/7 | Bit of Luck 7/7 | Agile Feet 7/7

A few posts back I said that Volkar should have it. Odds are if I'm not channeling, I'm casting. If I'm not casting, I'm firing a crossbow. Melee is way down on the list of options for Andrezi and I already have an AC of 18.

Congrats, Volkar, looks like you get a magic force shield!

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

Sounds good to me!!

ITs much shorter and less fluffy, but the new post is up in gameplay.

Thanks, GM! You're the best. :)

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

You make a very great point in gameplay that I had forgotten, Kiera! Downtime rules!! My google-fu seems to be off tonight though. Do you have a link to the table you used for those numbers? If anyone else would like to make a few coins during this time, you are welcome to it!

All I can find is this, the general downtime section of the PRD.

M Dwarf H:v Alchemist 5 | HP 27/32 | AC 16 T 12FF 16 | Fort+6 Ref +6 Will+6 | Initiative +2 | Perception+9| Diplm+6 | Appraise+9 | MWBattleaxe Melee +4 Attack bonus, 1d8+1, crt x3 ; CMD 14; 1185 gp 19sp

Ok, magic force shield...I need to go back and look up the stats for it. THANK YOU!

I was part of a campaign that tryied to use the downtime rules. They are interesting and require some effort. But, worth playing if we want.

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

Eh.. I am really not interested in the full downtime rules. However, something easy like what Kiera did is completely acceptable and beneficial to you as players.

Now. With that said, there will come a point later in the game where such an opportunity is presented (If all goes well). At that time, if the party chooses to do so, we will enact the full kit and caboodle of downtime rules. Until then, how about a few more gold in your pockets??

Volkar: Ring of Force Shield

Thanks DD for the link and info. Made an adjustment to my character sheet.

Also, did Volkar not find any leads on the Thessolonians? He was looking for any leads on the ancient history of the area.

Female Human Wizard (Exploiter) 8 | HP 54/54 | AC 13 T 13 FF 11 | Fort +4 Ref +5 Will +7 | Initiative +2 | Perception +10 | Arcane Reservoir: 7/11 | Pearls of Power: 1st—1/1 2nd—1/1

So, what I did is just using a Craft skill to earn money. Volkar could do the same with his alchemy skill (and he's probably better at it than me, because alchemists have a class bonus to the skill).

The basic gist is:
* Take 10 on your skill, so you don't need to roll
* Add your skill total (so, for a Craft, your Craft total + any bonus from masterwork tools)
* Divide in half
* That's how much gold you make in one week

Beyond that downtime rules start getting super-complex if you wanna do something like run a business, and are probably outside the scope of this adventure unless someone really wants to... I dunno, start a tavern or something.

EDIT: I looked at your stats, Volkar, and you have listed a +10 Craft (alchemy) skill. If you put 4 ranks into it (one for every level), you should have +14: 4 ranks, +3 Intelligence bonus, +3 class skill, +4 bonus from your alchemist class level.

If you buy masterwork tools (55 gp), which is like... basically having a small alchemy lab, you get another +2 for using those, which makes +16. Take 10 + 16 = 26, which means you can earn 13 gp per week from doing alchemy. If you use your Crafter's Fortune extracts, you raise that to a total of 31, which is 15 gp 5 sp per week.

Also, in the same way that I made scrolls, you can make lasting potions that you can carry or give to other people.

At basic, if you want to make a potion of one of your first-level extracts, it costs 25 gp.
If you make a potion of one of your second-level extracts, it costs you 150 gp.

When you make a potion by spending money and time like this it's "stabilized" and you can give it to other people to use or keep it for later - it doesn't count against your normal extracts per day.

The adventure economy of Pathfinder assumes that alchemists will use some of their wealth to make potions, just like wizards will use some of their money to make scrolls. At a glance you might invest in a potion of enlarge person so that you can use it or give it to Daelric if the need arises.

Also, you have listed Cure Serious Wounds as one of your formulas, but your level is too low to know that one yet. You probably have Cure Moderate Wounds instead.

Kiera: Good catches all around. I had glanced at Volkar's sheet, but had not had a chance to get indepth with it. Good catches all the way around.

Volkar: I had included some information in my lost document, then touched on it again in my rewrite, but forgot when I put up my post earlier. My apologies.

After asking around for a bit, you are finally directed to Brodert Quink, an expert on Varisian history who moved to Sandpoint recently to study the town’s own Thassilonian ruin—the Old Light.

Unfortunately, much of the lore about ancient Thassilon has been lost; what does remain has been gathered from barely legible carvings on the surviving monuments or extracted from the myths and oral traditions of Varisian seers and storytellers. What he knows about Thassilon is that it was a vast empire ruled by powerful wizards. The sheer size of the monuments they left behind testifies to their power, and the unnatural way many of these monuments have resisted erosion and the march of time testifies to their skill at magic. Most sages place the height of the Thassilonian empire at 7,000 to 8,000 years ago, but Brodert thinks the empire was even older—he suspects it collapsed no sooner than 10,000 years in the past.

Kiera - you are a Saint. THANK YOU. I use the myth-weaver sheet system so it can add things up, but you have to understand what some of the modifiers need to be, and to be candid - I don't. I listen to a Pathfinder podcast too - lol -that is supposed to help me learn these things, but I must at my age be a slow learner. LOL

THANK YOU.

So, let me weave this information and a meeting with Brodert Quink.

And don't forget to post up in Gameplay. Kiera is the only one so far. As soon as I get a few more posts over there, I will move us forward.

I doubt it, but are there any mines near Sandpoint? I could do some mining during the allotted time, as have profession in it. If not I will come up with something else.

Ooo, I know the answer to that one too!

The Sandpoint Hinterlands (the area around Sandpoint) are described in The Brinewall Legacy, the first AP for Jade Regent - which I happen to know about because I'm running it!

There are no mines described in that area. The Sandpoint Hinterlands are mostly marsh or briar forest, with a stretch of independent farmsteads to the southeast.

The most likely sites for mining are in the Tors (to the east) and Devil's Platter (east-southeast). Devil's Platter is very dangerous; one goblin tribe lives there, as do ghouls in the deep warrens, and there may be bugbears as well.

The Tors are home to many old Varisian tombs. They're great adventuring sites (lots of little hidden spots) but nothing is said about mines.

There's also Ashen Rise, which is limestone and relatively safe except for packs of stirges.

None of these have any noted mining.

You could certainly spend time looking for a good mining site or doing placer mining with a pan like a prospector, seeking gold or silver flakes in the Cougar Creek (unlikely, as it comes down from Ashen Rise, so mostly limestone) or the Turandarok River (more likely, as it comes down from somewhere east past the Mosswood and has other river tributaries; it's also used by loggers, so it's relatively safe as long as you don't go into the Mosswood).

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

For those Americans in here, happy thanksgiving! I hope that your day was spent with family and fellowship, and lots of good food!

Daelric: Thats odd.. So far I haven't run into that. I hope it was just a bug that got run out already.

As for the mining: Thank you Kiera! Once again, you saved me a ton of research. I knew that the hinterlands wouldn't have any mines, but I didn't know where to direct him either.

Armor for Daelric and for Andrezi: My suggestion for Magnimar was made prior to an in depth reading of this section.. so I am going to say that yes, your armor was sent up from Magnimar already.

Just an advance heads up.. I have some traveling to do this coming week from Thursday - Monday. This is likely to throw my posting off so please don't hesitate to bot me if needed. I will post as often as I am able, but am unable to make any promises about regularity.

Happy Boxing Day having missed the Christmas greeting. Sorry I went silent...we had a lot of stuff going on here with the weekend just vanishing. Off most of this week from the office - although having to go in tonight for a meeting.

Oh, if you are a Dr Who fan - Christmas Special thoughts? I loved the final speech, except about pears - eat the pears.

May the week ahead be one with laughter as we say good bye to 2017.

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

I love Dr. Who, but have not been able to see the Christmas special yet. In fact, I haven't been able to catch up pretty much since Capaldi took over! My wife (who got me into Dr. Who in the first place) had a very visceral and negative reaction to Capaldi when he first showed. We were generally about a season or two behind anyways because we had to wait for Netflix to pick up the seasons, but they dropped the show and we haven't been able to get back to it.

I hope all of you had a productive and prosperous 2017, and pray that your 2018 turns even better.

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

It seems that Dalerics last post anywhere was on Dec. 20th.. two and a half weeks ago. I really hope that all is well, but I haven't heard back from him. I can continue to GMNPC him until Daelric comes back, unless one of you would like to do it instead?

Boy, hope he is well. Go ahead and continue for him...then maybe we can figure out if we need to NPC him in turns

I run the other game that he's currently in and I haven't heard anything since then either. The timing would seem to coincide with the standard university holiday break (not that I know if Daelric's player is a student or not). Most schools should be back in session this coming week or the next.

In my game I was planning on waiting until the 16th before making a decision one way or the other and have been NPCing his character in the interim.

Sounds good to me, Andrezi. Thanks for the update!

@GM DevilDoc - You hear anything from Daelric's player? I haven't as of yet.

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

Neither have I. I assumed that's what yall have been waiting for in the gameplay, as no one has responded to my last post.

So, What do yall want to do? In addition, we can continue to move the action forward through this spot as we decide our next moves as well. I am not going to drop Daelric from the game.. should he return, he will be more than welcome to take up the mantle again. However, I do think we should recruit at least one more person. If nothing else, it will at least help with the fights. Some new blood may also get the post rate back up for everyone.

Volkar?
Kiera?

Female Human Wizard (Exploiter) 8 | HP 54/54 | AC 13 T 13 FF 11 | Fort +4 Ref +5 Will +7 | Initiative +2 | Perception +10 | Arcane Reservoir: 7/11 | Pearls of Power: 1st—1/1 2nd—1/1

I think we should get a new recruit, and we are at a good spot for swapping characters if needed - we can all go back to Sandpoint after this as it doesn't seem like we're going to get any more useful info out of Grayst unless we somehow get really lucky and Andrezi is able to nurse him through ghoul fever without him dying. Daelric has a built-in story element of looking for his father, so he could go follow some other lead that takes him away from Sandpoint for a while; if the player returns, Daelric can come back after the lead doesn't pan out or points back the other way.

M Dwarf H:v Alchemist 5 | HP 27/32 | AC 16 T 12FF 16 | Fort+6 Ref +6 Will+6 | Initiative +2 | Perception+9| Diplm+6 | Appraise+9 | MWBattleaxe Melee +4 Attack bonus, 1d8+1, crt x3 ; CMD 14; 1185 gp 19sp

Sadly, I agree with you Kiera. We get through this encounter and we can always send Daelric back with the guy to the Chapel.

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

Ok. Do any of you have preferences for an invite or do you want me to put up a general recruitment?

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

Just to make sure that we are all playing with the same deck of cards, I went back and looked up Master Marshmallow's original recruitment thread from when we all started. (Holy hell, was it really Nov of 2015 when we all started?!?!?!)

It looks like the original creation rules were:
1) 25 pt buy OR 2d6+6, reroll any 1's
2) 3 traits and a drawback
3) Any Paizo sources for Class

I don't see any remarks about race, but I was playing an Aasimar, so I don't think there were too many restrictions in that regard. However, when I took over, I pretty much left it up to yall on what you wanted to carry over as far as the three traits/drawback, and I left the stats alone if I remember correctly. Does this jive with what yall have?

Recruitment method:
I would really rather a personal invite if yall have any suggestions. Most of the people I am familiar with on the boards either have already played this, or are strictly society players. Or if no one has any preferences on an invite, I can post in the Flaxseed Lodge for another character and see who bites. Either way, I would like group input and hopefully full consensus before anyone gets added.

I'm not super-picky as long as we have a front line that can hold melee! :D

I know a few people, most have played Runelords I think, I can scare up a possible contact maybe. Andrezi also knows a ton of good players, I'd trust anyone he suggests.

I do have 25 point buy. I have 2 traits but I didn't take a drawback.

I'll ask around a bit and see if I can find someone appropriate.

Looks like I took the 2d6+6 re-rolling 1's route and the dice treated me well. Like Kiera, I have two traits and did not take a drawback.

I've sent a couple of PMs (one at a time) to gauge the interest of a couple of players of mine that are not currently in a RotRL game. First came back with a "would love to play, but really don't have the time for another PbP."

The second is out at the moment and we'll see what the response is.

If that one doesn't yield anything positive, I'll defer to Kiera/Jesse, as he is way more games than I am at this point and most of the ones that I am in feature many of the same players/DMs.

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

I figured you two would have the most non-society contacts.. we will see how your PM pans out, Andrezi and go from there!
