"Oh!" Soddy gasps as she spots the ring of severed heads, sounding...perhaps not horrified but definitely quite shocked. "They've been plucked, like petals from a flower! What an awful way to have your spirit set loose from your vessel!"

Catorze had been laughing with the others until she followed Fola’s gaze.
Then her eyes narrow and her ears go flat against her head. She hunches like a feline ready to pounce. “Fola. Whomever is responsible for this will die. This is no mere warning. This is an atrocity, and will be dealt with as such.”

Aglynn, in typical dwarven fashion, doesn't blanch at the sight of the heads, but does look sad. "May Torag look after these brave warriors."

GM Redelia |

Fola starts to move forward, calling out, "Please help me get them off those posts. I don't care if touching them is forbidden, I just need to make this stop!"
As she does so, a few of the heads lift off the poles of their own volition and move towards you.
Soddy, Lovissa, Catorze, and Aglynn can all take one move or standard action as surprise round. The creatures are rising off their poles as their surprise round action. If any survive, I'll roll initiative.
You may roll kn:religion to find out about these creatures, even if you can't act.

Now that the animated heads are no more, Fola begins to weep. She tells you the names of each of the people the heads used to be. After her fear has subsided, Lovissa looks around for any more enemies. Finding none, she cleans off her blade and sheathes it, then helps Fola take down the heads.

"Oh...they splatter like melons," Soddy remarks, lowering her arm that had been ready to launch another seed pod. "Good, easier to take care of."
She toddles over to Fola and gives her a pat on the leg. "They weren't your friends anymore, just empty vessels. Their spirits are safe and well, I know it!"

GM Redelia |

After ending the disrespectful treatment of the heads, you make your way into the narrow entrance in the cliff face. The persistent heat and humidity of the jungle fades away quickly beyond the cut in the rock that leads to a sloping passageway. A subtle breeze, tinged with the odor of bat guano, flows from deeper within.

"Cool, safe from the jungle heat. I bet all kinds of plants and fleshy things live in here - especially if there's water somewhere!"

GM Redelia |

Soddy notices a series of ancient cave paintings that begin at a height of 20 feet off the ground. There are two layers of art. The older layer depicts humans and some type of bat-winged creatures worshiping a massive shadowy figure that resembles a gigantic bat. Over top of this layer are depictions of human figures battling and trapping the older figures. In fact, the newer art incorporates these older images into its own, imprisoning the old artwork within the new. They seem to continue into the cave.

Caena pauses to offer a brief silent prayer for the souls of the elves whose heads they struck down. It bothers her a little that she didn't know what caused the heads to act that way, but maybe inside there will be some clue. Or else it will be a mystery forever, as sometimes happens.
"Let's find out what's hiding out in this place," she says grimly as they move into the cave, and keeps her weapon drawn. She pauses to look at the wall when Soddy notices something, and then scratches her chin in thought. "Is it some kind of bat monster, then?"

botting a kn. religion check from Catorze; she can try untrained due to bardic knowledge
kn. religion: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Catorze points out that the older layer of images contains iconography associated with Camazotz, the god of bats, blood, and nocturnal predators.
Lovissa recognizes that the human figures are depictions of Old-Mage Jatembe and his Ten Magic Warriors. She remembers that Old-Mage Jatembe and his warriors are legendary heroes, responsible for protecting the people of Garund from countless evil forces and establishing schools of arcane learning, such as the world-famous Magaambya academy in Nantambu.

![]() |

"Ah! These human figures are heroes of LEGEND!" Lovissa exclaims. "This one here is Old-Mage Jatembe himself! And these others are his Ten Magic Warriors." She grins. "Legends say he protected the people of Garund from countless evil forces. I hope to forge a legend as great as his before my time is up. They'll remember me through the ages!"
She seems unnaturally cheery considering the circumstances....
"Let's show this bat beast that they need fear US, just as much as they did Jatembe!"
Lovissa's ready to head deeper into the cave.

![]() |

"Bat god, bat spirit, definitely a bad spirit," Soddy nods her head. "We'll be the sun and shine light on the badness and drive it away, just like your fleshy hero and his friends did!"

GM Redelia |

A cool breeze flows through this large cavern from a ten-foot diameter hole near the center, carrying with it the metallic tang of blood. The floor and walls look to have been shaped long ago and stained with mineral deposits over time, but the ceiling fifty feet above remains in its natural state, covered with stalactites. East of the hole is a crude stone altar formed of rock. Just past the altar to the east, a massive stalactite hangs from the ceiling and stops five feet from the floor. It has been carved into the shape of a gigantic bat, its wings outspread and its fangs exposed as if about to consume a victim below. Bloodstains cover the altar. Near the altar stands a Medium-sized batlike humanoid with crimson fur and long, sharp claws. Next to him are what appear to be three headless Ekujae elf bodies, standing up and moving. A still-living Ekujae elf is bound on the altar, and several other Ekujae are in a cage at the back of the room. This place 'feels evil.'
I'll put the enemies on the map and roll initiative in the morning; for now, feel free to do whatever you do as you make your way into the cave and also react to what you see. The cave is dark, so some of you may not be able to see what I described. If you're using lighting, please tell me about it.

![]() |

As they progress down the tunnel, Lovissa activates her Wayfinder for light. She sniffs the air. "Smells like blood."
Clutching her terbutje in her hand she enters the cave and looks around. An uneasy feeling fills her, but the light doesn't pierce the gloom enough to let her see the depths of the cave. She can barely make out the lip of the pit...

![]() |

As the group moves down the tunnel and steps into the large cavern ahead Soddy gasps, her eyes able to pierce the darkness further than Lovissa's right reaches.
"Bat spirit! Bad spirit in fleshy form, with fleshy prisoners!" she gasps, pointing at something further back. "Go away, bad bat spirit and leave the fleshy Ekujae alone!"

![]() |

Caena squints into the darkness. The hairs rise on the back of her neck. Being in a place of such evil makes her feel slightly ill. She whispers, "This place... we definitely found it." At Soddy's exclamation she snaps to attention. "Prisoners! Where?"
Caena has low-light vision but no light source out, since both of her hands are full.
