"I'll protect you," Soddy remarks, tugging on Gellion's sleeve. "Promise! Just wait until you see my seeds!"

the brown area on the map represents the quicksand you found, and the yellow arrow the direction you are moving.
You investigate the quicksand carefully, and find that although it is dangerous, you can easily go around it, so you do so.
Can you please make sure that the marching order I have set up works for you?

Looks good to me.

Good with me!

After scouting the quicksand, Catorze returns to the ground, prowling in front with Caena. She sniffs again at the air. “Does it seem too quiet to you?”
Let’s just roll with it, since four of us agreed that the marching order’s fine.

GM Redelia |

Suddenly, the insect sounds that you have become accustomed to grow much louder, and something flies up from behind you. Three bugs move close and try to attach their long sucker-like noses to Soddy, Sara, and Lovissa.
if you have any special abilities that let you take an AoO while flat footed, let me know.
stirge 1, on Soddy, surprise round, touch: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
stirge 2, on Sara, surprise round, touch: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
stirge 3, on Lovissa, surprise round, touch: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Soddy and Sara each take 1 con damage. :(
2d100 ⇒ (23, 98) = 121
Round 1: the stirges attached to Soddy and Sara continue to suck their blood, doing one more con damage each.
The stirge by Lovissa tries again to attach to her.
attach, touch: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Lovissa takes 1 con damage.
The party is up.
This is horrible; can someone please look carefully to make sure I'm not making any mistakes here? These are standard bestiary stirges.

Ah, stirges! I always play them that they only manage to suck away the con at the end of the complete turn if they’re still attached. Unfortunately, they had a surprise round on us.
Fighting a stirge goes like this:
1) The stirge enters your square to attack, provoking an attack of opportunity because it is a tiny creature.
2) The stirge makes a touch attack and if it succeeds it is grappling you.
3) If it succeeds in the attack, at the end of the turn the stirge will drain your blood causing 1 point of constitution damage.
4) On your turn you have the option to either hit the attached stirge or grapple it to remove it.
5) If you try to break the grapple then you make a CMB check against the CMD of the stirge if you are successful then the stirge is removed.
6) If the stirge is still alive and not removed it must make a CMB check against your CMD to stay attached. If you did not try to remove it the stirge gets a +5 bonus to this roll. If it succeeds it drains another point of constitution.
Missing the Perceptions here tanked us. Normally you can get an attack of opportunity as they come in. Stealthy little bugs.

“Ugh, blood-sucking bugs!”
Catorze races back through her companions. It’s the frail little plant that she’s most worried about... Soddy Daisy had been so frail of late.
The stirges are attached. No attacks of opportunity from them!
Engaging her Archeologist’s luck, she strikes at Soddy’s stirge.
If Soddy has been saved by Aglynn (ikely since the Stirge’s AC will be much lower when grappled), then Catorze attacks Sara’s stirge!

Well, since you asked...A surprise round is only a single action. If they needed to fly in, they couldn’t also attack. Those attack rolls would have then happened in Round 1, putting Soddy and Sara at 1 Con damage each instead of 2 and Lovissa still uninjured. On their next rounds, they’ll need to make a grapple check to maintain the grapple.

Ahh, that's what I missed, they did too much during the surprise round. OK, I'll fix it, keeping the rolls as much as possible.
unfortunately, no AoO while flat-footed without special abilities.
The nasty little bugs fly into the squares on the surprise round.
Round 1, they go first, attaching themselves to Soddy and Sara, doing 1 con damage.
Sara smashes at her stirge, injuring but not killing it.
Soddy's stirge gets smashed by Aglyn and falls to the ground.
Catorze smashes the one that bit into Sara. reassigning to hers, since it's already attached and she's the other one already frail
Soddy, Caena, and Lovissa all may act.

Caena whirls around as Sara yells out and the rest of them move to fight off the blood-sucking critters. She whips out her scimitar and tries to slice it through the nearest one. "Lovissa, look out, right behind you!"

Derp. Missed that! Thank you Kate!
“Disgusting!” Catorze shakes her blade, then prestidigitates it clean. “Are you three alright?”

Thanks Caena. I'm fairly used to those buggers. Can't always avoid them.
With all the grace of a teamster's wagon on square wheels, Sarah stumbles, and trips over the perfectly flat ground.
I could use a lesser restore. Dex is down 6 points to 4 and Con is down 1 point-no negative modifier.

status of party:
Lovissa: 1 dex damage
Catorze: 2 dex damage
Aglynn: 1 dex damage
Sara: 4 dex damage, 1 con damage, still ill
Soddy: 4 dex damage, 1 con damage, still ill
Those d100 rolls were because there was a percentage chance you could have picked up another disease from the stirges.
I know this looks really discouraging right now, but it will turn out OK. The adventure is set up so that it's almost a sure thing that some party members will be in bad shape at this point.
It is soon night, and Mitarat tells you that he expects you will reach the edge of Ekujae territory the next day.
I need fort saves against disease from Sara and Soddy for first thing in the morning. One more success and you will be over the disease, though you will still have ability damage. Lovissa, Catorze, and Aglynn will all recover 1 point of dex overnight, and Sara and Soddy will get that con damage healed by resting; their dex damage won't heal by resting while they are still ill.

“Tomorrow? Then we should be in our best possible condition.” She pulls out her antiplague and offers it to Soddy, and then spends the evening trying to tend inexpertly to Sara. She offers the Nagaji clean water, tries to keep her scales cool (Do nagaji get fevers? I don’t even know), and prays to Erastil that he will give them all strength for the challenges they will face on the next day.
So Soddy can use the antiplague, and I’ll make a highly untrained Heal check for Sara, using inspiration to roll twice and take the better result.

Aglynn sits up by the fire for a while, looking troubled.

Whoah, I missed a lot! Haha.
When the stirges attacked, Lovissa was far too busy fanning herself with a massive leaf to notice. She barely had time to draw her sword before the others squished the pests.
"Nicely done, ladies!" she remarks with surprise. "And look at me! So drenched in sweat I couldn't even get a grip on my blade!" she shakes her head at herself and chuckles.
As everyone settles in for the night, Lovissa tells them, "You should all rest. I'll keep watch for a while."
Then she sits in a sombre bit of silence, much like Aglynn.
"You look troubled." she remarks quietly to the dwarf as the others bed down for the night.

"The heat, the illness, and the very large insects don't help, but yes, the mission itself is weighing on me. The point of it is to keep the word of the deceased. Do you think that we also owe our word to the dead? To keep promises after the person they were made to is gone?"

![]() |

Lovissa considers this. "I believe that we must uphold the vows we make, both to others and to ourselves. Even after death. Honour, loyalty, trustworthiness... These things are very important. But, nothing is more important than being true to ourselves."
With a sad smile she admits, "Not all promises can be kept. Nor should they."

"My mother disappeared when I was young. You can probably imagine, that was quite the scandal in a traditional dwarven community. My father wouldn't even let her name be said in his presence. I promised him that I wouldn't go look for her, and I kept that promise for a long time. He died three years ago, and...I just needed to know. Is my mother still out there? There were rumors around the town about her, that she had strange magic, that things happened in her presence. Maybe she's why I can do the things that I can do. So I left home to find her. I always thought of myself as a dutiful daughter, and I guess this whole mission is just making me feel guilty." Agylnn points a finger at the ground and pushes the dirt around.

Wow, 33 new posts to read since I checked last night!

Fort (Antiplague): 1d20 + 4 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 4 + 5 = 28
Although Soddy's had a pretty rough time during their trip through the jungle, she's at least able to rally after their battle with the stirges - with a little help from Caena.
"Thank you," Soddy says as she curls up on her bedroll. "My vines are still weak so I'm sorry I was too slow to help fight the stirges," she adds with a sigh. "But maybe I'll feel better tomorrow. Still can help watch though; my eyes don't need light to see so I can watch the latest watches if you want me to."

![]() |

Lovissa grins, as if at a fond memory. "I might understand that less than you think. I have no idea who my father is, and I've never really cared. He's Ulfen, obviously. But other than that." She shrugs. "My mother's always been enough. I've grandparents to be proud of, and never had trouble making friends or paramours."
"But, if you want my opinion... I believe in the power of history. That our lineages and our ancestors can shape who we are. But we're not bound by it. We forge our own legends, and make our own futures. So when I step out my door each morning, it's not to please my mother, or my grandfather, or to keep my honour. It's to make my ambitions into a reality."
"So if you feel in your soul that you want to know your mother, or to discover what's happened to her, you should do it. And if some day you decide you've something else driving you, then you start off on a new path. If your father was any kind of man, he'll look down on you from his place in the afterlife with pride, knowing that you've made your own way and forged your own future."

Aglynn smiles at Lovissa's words. "He was the best man. And I will keep looking."
She turns at Sara's voice. "Still awake? Tell us about your nest.

![]() |

It was wonderful. We made blankets and ponchos. We did all kinds of beadwork. My job was to sell our natural oils to visitors. We never understood why people would want belts, bags, and shoes made from our skin. Not only is that gross, but disrespectful. Anyway, I've been scent out into the world to find new beads and interesting new smells for our new lines of decoratives and musks.

![]() |

Looking over at Sara, Lovissa smirks. "What you choose to do in response to what others choose to do, is entirely up to you. You cannot choose your circumstances, but you can choose what you do in them."
Tossing a stick into the fire, she shrugs. "But tonight is not for elaborate speeches. You should rest. You're ill."
At Sara's mention of wearing belts made from their skin, Lovissa raises an eyebrow. "Do you actually make such things for others? Or do mean that others attempt to make them of your people?"

![]() |

Others ask, or attempt. We would never treat our dead so sacrilegiously.
Sarah goes greener at the thought of being used as a fashion statement.
I think I'd better go lay down.
She curls up into a ball and silently cries. Memories of home overwhelm her.
Quietly she asks does anyone have mint tea?

![]() |

With a curled lip, Lovissa remarks, "That ask that? How horrible! They need a good walloping."
"I've only water, I'm afraid. Good night."

![]() |

Lovissa goes to bed after keeping watch a while, and wakes up in the morning with a big stretch and a growl.
Hopefully feeling refreshed!

Mitarat smiles when he sees how much better you appear to be this morning. "Good, good, pretty ladies should not be so ill. Come, we can reach the Ekujae's territory today."
Wandering through the jungle, you hear noises of someone else travelling on two legs. Looking ahead, you see what appears to be a small band of Aspis raiders, leading two injured and tied up Ekujae elves. The leader of the Aspis raiders has slightly pointed ears, and his lack of weapons suggests to you that he is a spell-caster. He snarls nastily as he sees you, especially Caena.
