"Ringhier has promised to lead us now to the Heralds headquarters. If I am not mistaken we will be able to rest there, protected among his allies Letitia" Samuel tries to clarify with what he understands comes next.

Sorry i didn't give you much to go on, this week has been so busy I hvaen't been able to write a good post to move things along.

Yes, indeed Ringhier replies Now that you have your papers, we will move on to meet the Heralds. they are located at a hidden shrine in the Floes. it should only take us half an hour to reach it. follow my lead and stay out of trouble.

Letitia:

the Floes is a district in Whitethrone for many of the Elite Jadwiga, very close to the Water Palace. you likely either lived in or visited the Floes on occasion when you were last in this city

once everyone is ready, Ringheir opens the door slowly. there is no sign of the earlier patrol, they seem to have lost interest. Ringheir leads you through the streets for a few blocks.

The winding streets of the Howlings give way to an intersection of broad thoroughfares that lead to other districts within Whitethrone, where the buildings are markedly improved in the quality of their construction and the detail of their woodwork. in the distance the sounds of busier streets can be heard, but for such a large city Whitethrone seems somber and muted.

A white signpost with black lettering points the way to several districts:
"Two Hills" to the North
"Merchants' Quarter and the Floes" to the southeast
"Porcelain Street and Frosthall" to the south.

Perception DC 20:

you spot two mirror men partially hidden in the shadow of the eaves of a building just outside the Howlings perimeter. if you hadn't spotted them you would have passed within a few feet of them before seeing them clearly

GM, was there enough time to craft a potion of mage armor for Alec while we were waiting on the papers?

Letitia nods, remembering. She was almost convinced that Ringheir would be reluctant to take them to the Heralds' hideout considering that he'd likely guessed that she had stronger ties to the Jadwiga than she'd let on.

A part of her almost didn't want to know where this hideout is, since she would have to make a difficult choice about what to do with the knowledge if she ever regains her station as a ruling Jadwiga. She decides not to think about it, since she was still a fugitive and would be killed right along with everyone else by most of her aunts and cousins.

Apparently it took a couple of hours so I guess so Letitia

Noticing nothing that should prevent it, the Taldan starts walking to the southeast.

yes, you would have had time to craft a potion for alec. would that have involved pulling out a cauldron in front of your hosts, or do you have other ways of making a potion?

If I could be allowed to use a pot belonging to Mortin, I can do that. Or if the cooking stove is in another room, Letitia will use her own cauldron.

At the signs, she looks at Ringheir. "That way, yes?"

the group is focused on looking at the signs and figuring out their next direction and they don't notice the figures waiting in the shadows. two mirror men step out from where they were concealed and block your path. one of them holds out a hand and points to it, asking for something.

"they want to see your papers. just a standard checkpoint. don't panic" Ringheir says quietly to Samuel and Letitia.

the two mirror men make no sound, and you can see yourselves clearly in the glossy mirrored surface of their faces.

the mirror man holds up the papers for a while, longer than you think it should take to read off the info. if that's even what it is doing. without eyes on their blank mirrored faces it is really hard to tell if they are reading the documents or studying your faces. maybe its both.

Luckily, the group has fallen into their roles well and the papers appear to be in order. after a few long moments the mirror man passes the papers back and waves you through.

in your mind you hear a cold, sterile voice echo
continue. as a reminder, public dancing is strictly prohibited.

the two mirror men then silently walk back to their spot under the eaves of a building and seem to have lost interest in you.

Ringhier lets out a long breath he has been holding and silently continues on, trying very hard not to look back at the mirrored monsters behind him.

He leads the way through the city. you get your first real look at Whitethrone. the buildings here are much larger and much nicer than those in the Howlings. they continue to get richer and more opulent the further he takes you, guiding you into the Floes, an obviously well-off district of the city.

you see an impressive array of different creatures walking around the city, but many of them move quickly, not looking around as they go about their business. the evidence of martial law is everywhere, from signs describing curfew and listing names of fugitives to armed patrols of humans and ice trolls, to numerous mirror men stationed at intersections. you spot humans, dwarves, trolls, and fey in abundance. you even spot a frost giant.

Ringheir leads you to a small but beautiful bathhouse near a rather large and impressive building. he speaks a few quite words with an attendant who quickly lets you in.

Ringheir leads you down a flight of stairs into what appears to be a service tunnel. he then knocks on a hidden door with a rythmic tapping. the door swings open on well oiled hinges

Here we are. you're about to meet the Heralds of Summer's Return. let me make the introductions. our people are always in need of strong help, but are cautious. I am well known here, and my word should be enough for them to trust you. any questions before we move on?

"No public dancing, ok" Samuel, alias Fiodor, nods and hasten to make distance between him and the mirrormen.

"Wow! That was disturbing, isn't it?" the Taldan comments while contemplating the clear opulence of the houses in this area of the city "This place seems rich. What have the witches done to bolster the economy like that in such a barren land of perpetual snow?"

--------------------------

"It is normal. It is very difficult to maintain an organization secret with all those guards out there. I mean, wow! Did you see that frost giant? It was truly large" as for questions, Samuel only asks "Any of the Heralds we should be particularly sensitive about?"

RoW Maps

Ringheir looks at Ashling with a raised eyebrow
"I don't rightly know. just one of the many restrictions the queen has put in place to keep the city docile and in her control. it was put in place specifically to curtain the... disruptions... sometimes caused by groups of Stilyagi

You will not be meeting many of the Heralds face to face. best if you don't know too many faces, yes? you will be meeting with Solveig Ayrdahl, a cleric of Milani and the leader of this safehouse. tell her your story and I think she will be willing to help you. anything you need, like selling and buying goods she can help you with.

Before we enter, I should mention. mirrors are strictly forbidden inside the Shrine. if you have brought any this far, I would strongly urge you to break them now and discard them before we enter.

Once you're ready he leads you inside. the space is simple and slightly cramped with short celings. the walls are very warm from the warm spring water being fed into the bathhouse above. there are doors to about a dozen small rooms off of a small hallway. you enter into a small chapel with a shrine to the Everbloom set at one end. Ringheir introduces you to a tall ulfen woman with long blonde hair in braids. her face is friendly, but she is obviously a woman who has seen hardship, and a fire burns behind her smile.

She looks over you critically as Ringheir introduces you.

Greetings Solveig. I have brought friends who have travelled very far to aid in the fight against the queen. I will let them tell their tale, but I believe they will be a very useful asset in your fight

Letitia meets Solveig's eyes as she looks over everyone. She nods in thanks to Ringheir, then turns back to Solveig. "Our tale will be long in telling, but as Ringheir has said, we come to aid in the fight against Queen Elvanna. Her actions have made her an enemy of more than just the downtrodden in Irrisen. We come from far-away Taldor, since her grasp has reached that far, spreading winter fey and troll-folk to its warm lands."

She gestures to the others to produce the objects that they wish to sell off. "We plan to strike at the dancing hut itself. To rob the queen of her trophy, and show that she is not all-powerful. But before we do so, we would like to sell off some of these items that have no use for us, and then hopefully buy items that will serve us better. Can you help us with this?"

Samuel nods to Ringheir. Without uncovering the objects crystal face, he looks for the mirror they took from the soldiers and looking the others for confirmation, he breaks it, leaving the shatters inside the piece of cloth were it was covered.

"In fact we came here through a portal that had opened to our home in Taldor. Rest assured, we destroyed the magics that kept open that portal. Now we... we know our home will not be safe until we dethrone Elvanna. And that's why we came here... because we came to know there is a law that says Elvanna should be queen no more, and we know taking the Dancing Hut is the first step to have her gone of Irisen's throne" the Taldan looks then at Ashling "I think... we should tell them..."

I think showing would do better than telling personally but very well. I Ashling Frostwing am the current bearer of the Cloak of Baba yagas Black rider. We have received an order of destiny to fix what has been broken by Elvanna and restore order to the world before endless winter consumes everything, because of the irresponsibility of the witches in charge. Not like ours whose clearly more intelligent than her sisters Ashling motions to Letitia before showing the Black Mantle, we must find the hut and take it, for it will lead us on the path to salvation... I... have always held a connection with the cold and winter, the forces in play are... powerful but wrong. I am... not good at expressing myself or... feeling anything, but... i understand what is going on and that action is needed. People deserve to live without fear for their life. with that somewhat lengthy but emotionally lacking speech she shows off her Black rider form briefly, and yes, the fact that the black rider is at the moment a 15 year old girl. The comedy does not escape me

Solveig just stares at you for a moment, taking all of that information in with a look that is hard to read. after a moment she turns to Ringheir

"You brought a Witch into our secret shrine? and the servant of the Mother Of All Witches Herself?! what were you thinking?"

Ringheir holds up a defensive hand, but shoots a look towards Ashling as if to say Really? was that a good idea?

"these folk are not allies of the witches, Solveig. they helped my own niece against Nazheena, killing her apprentice in her own tower. they helped her get all the way here to Whitethrone, and saved me from a situation... that i got into. this is a strange time in Whitethrone my old friend, perhaps it is time we accept help from some less expected places?

Solveig puts a hand on her forehead and watches you all, a new wariness in her eyes. "Ringheir's word carries a lot of weight around here, but I am less than inclined to trust you lot. as he says, these are strange times. for now you may stay here. in fact, you will stay here, until i decide what to do with you. we have food and supplies to go around. and if you do have goods to buy or sell we can handle that for you while we figure out our next move. but until that time you will be staying here in this safehouse. is that satisfactory, My Black Midnight? she addresses all of this to Ashling, who by claiming the mantle has made herself the leader in Solveig's eyes.

Letitia's eyes went wide as she stared agape at Ashling when the oracle just revealed their secrets that condemned them in the eyes of the Heralds of Summer's Return. Solveig reacted predictably, though thankfully she didn't go for weapons.

Miraculously, Ringheir actually spoke up for them. Feeling silence was the best course so long as the Heralds weren't seeking to kill them immediately, Letitia remained silent until a tentative truce seemed to have been developed.

She wanted to be furious at Ashling, but she put those feelings aside for the moment since anger would not help her at this moment. Seeing as Solveig's attention was directed at the bearer of the Black Rider's mantle, she looks over to Ringheir and addresses him directly.

"You asked for my story, and I promised I would give it. Now's as good a time as any, lest Solveig decide that the only kind of good witch is a dead one.

"My name is Letitia. I was raised to be a winter witch, but I fell behind in my training. I received an object lesson in the witch's cruelty, because for that sole crime I was sentenced to death. I escaped and fled Irrisen, thinking I would never return. Instead, Queen Elvanna seeks to expand the borders of Irrisen over all of Avistan, and possibly beyond. I've no choice but to fight against her."

She gestures to her companions. "We did encounter the Black Rider, mortally wounded by Elvanna's forces. It is obvious that Queen Elvanna cannot be contested directly, but with his dying breath the Rider gave us the means to use Baba Yaga's hut against her.

"We have already closed one gate, but it is not enough. Nothing stops Queen Elvanna from opening more. We have to do it this way. We needed the help of the Heralds of Summer's Return to navigate Whitethrone, so we came to you. I would have preferred not to have burdened you with all this, but that has passed. All I can ask is that you believe us. Because truly, if we were agents of the queen, could you think of a more stupid thing to do than to reveal ourselves this way?"

Samuel is about to stop Ashling when she went as far as to reveal Letitia is a witch. Biting his lips, the High Sentinel breaths deep. He wants to find a excuse, to put up a cover, but it is just too late.

"We are in the same side. We would like a free Irisen. But how to fight Elvanna? Isn't that a daunting idea? But look, we have found this tool..." Samuel points to the Black Rider "...Baba Yaga might be just the lesser devil here, but she is the only one who can surely face Elvanna and take her out of Irisen's throne right now. Callix winces visibly at Ashling's statements - first her declaration and then almost moreso her bravado - then says, "We would be more than pleased to accept the hospitality that you offer, and accept the limitations that are a part of that." She looks as though she wants to say more, to apologize for the teenager's rashness, to identify her own background - or her mother's as a freedom fighter -- then ultimately sighs and stops. One of the first, and best, fencing lessons is that sometimes the best you can do is hold your guard and wait.... though this is dangerously close to the one about realizing when a battle is already lost.

"I want to believe you, I really do. we need all the help we can get, even if it means working with a JAdwiga for the first time in our history. perhaps it is time to use our enemy's own weapons against them. regardless of how this works out, however, I fear that further down the road you and i will have no choice but to be enemies. you may not agree with the queen, but you are still one of them. if your station as a witch was restored, what would you do? now that you know where we live? would you trade our lives for your own if given the choice? I have trouble believing you wouldn't.

"the lesser devil? you poor southern child. you have no idea what you've gotten yourself into do you? Elvanna is the youngest daughter of Baba Yaga. only one of many that the Mother has put on this throne. she is one step below a god. she is eternal, more a force of nature than a mere person.

and you call dethroning Elvanna the reasonable and feasible goal? how do you propose we take on one of the strongest witches in the world along with an entire army of witches, monsters and humans?

after a few moments she speaks again

"We do have some plans in the works. it won't be enough to dethrone a queen, but we can perhaps stir up some trouble in the city. if you really were able to steal the Hut out from under her, it would be a significant blow to the aire of invulnerability the queen currently enjoys. our battle against her has to be one of attrition and morale. the more people we can sway to our side by shaking some of her support the easier it will be to wear down her power.

I will meet with some of the other Heralds to work out a plan that makes use of your crew taking the Hut. it may take some time. will you be willing to stay here and stay hidden for a few days while we get something in motion?

Letitia turns her ice-blue eyes to Solveig. "The cruelty of the Jadwiga was laid bare to me the day my queen ordered my mother to strangle me to death. Now, my training and knowledge are used against the Jadwiga who follow Elvanna."

Her face turns uncertain. "I have thought about what I might do if I were to regain my status as a Jadwiga. I won't offer empty assurances. I don't know. I've learned much in my exile, such as the perspective of the downtrodden common folk of Irrisen. Lessons I don't expect to soon forget."

She sighs, and for a moment the real conflict shows up on her face. "I don't know." Her expression turns resolute again. "Regardless... the road to that eventuality is long and quite unlikely. As you say. Elvanna's forces are legion, and she herself is the most powerful witch in the land."

Callix says, honestly, "Worst case, should that day ever come, Letitia will be conflicted in making her choice. And that would result in a delay - an opening - where she could be struck down... or, if she delays before the Jadwiga, it would be seen as a sign she's not committed to the cause, and likely lead to her execution - especially given her history."

Callix shrugs, then adds, "That said, as much as it shocks me to hear the daughter of a Blackraven say it, I trust her with my life, and believe that she'd actually make the right choice in the moment."

"We only want good for the people of Irisen. It really hurts that you don't see our goals are same" Samuel spits to the lodge floor irked "Anyway, stealing the Hut was our target when we decided to come to Whitethrone, so let's have that done. If you really want to help with that, we will be patient and wait for your plan to come up"

The Taldan nods impressed at the last wards coming from Callix. Then he just adds "Something we Taldan's learnt by hard is internal fights only make you more vulnerable to external menaces. And when those forces strike, it will not matter what puny differences you might have with your allies, you all will be mopped up. Let's work together"

Letitia turns to Callix. "I won't be conflicted. That "moment" will only ever come -- if it comes at all -- after Queen Elvanna is dead or deposed. I would not trust her word, whether she offered to spare me or give me rule over Whitethrone." She offers Callix a tight smile. "And I never expected to place my life in the hands of a Blackraven's daughter."

But... whatever anyone wants to believe, Baba held the status quo, irrisen invaded... and then just stopped at it's height. Very well. it appears that at least for the time being we can work together as allies. I apologize if it appears I am being too cautious. we have lost some people recently who were.... very dear. it is hard to trust strangers. but in war we have little choice, and your strange crew might be the missing piece that it takes to loosen the hold the witches have on this city.

she shows you to several of the rooms branching off of the main hallway. all of them are currently empty.

We use these halls sometimes to hold people who need to stay out of sight. right now we have plenty of room for you. make youselves as comfortable as possible, and I will return to check on you when i am able. I will send one of my soldiers to collect any goods you woudl like to trade in the city. we can supply some gear and weapons if they are needed before you set off again.

I will go and speak with some of the other leaders of the HEralds here in Whitethrone and will return with a plan. I know you do not wish to stay here long, but I would advise some measure of patience. if we work together you will have a better chance of success than if you went running after the Hut right now.

I will tell you, things are going to be more complicated than you probably expected them to be. the Hut.... is defending itself. at least that's our best guess. the Queen stole the thing somehow and put it in the market square for all to see. some time later we all awoke one morning to a forest in the middle of the city! the hut is in the center of this unnatural wood, and is protected by some sort of barrier and creatures that came from nowhere in Irrisen. getting into the hut may be more challenging than just walking up to it and spiriting it away

With that she takes her leave, giving you time to get accustomed to your new home.

you have at least 3 days of downtime here, but not a lot of options since you can't venture out from this safehouse very easily. please let me know if there is anything in particular you want to do or discuss during that time, or if you would like me to zip us forward to the end of this downtime

Letitia accepts the rooms being offered, and chooses the one that smells the most pleasant.

Before Solveig departs, she asks her, "Since there's no sense in keeping him a secret, I would like to retrieve my familiar. He's a snowy owl, likely hiding amongst the eves of this or a neighboring building."

============

When the party is alone:

Letitia rounds on Ashling, her blue eyes blazing in cold fury. "What chill of the brain possessed you to reveal ourselves to them!?! Do you have any idea how lucky we are that they didn't attack us immediately? If Ringheir hadn't spoken up just then, we'd be dead, or they would!"

Measuring her tone, she continues. "I understand that Elvanna threatens the whole world. But these rebels only care about their own homes, and they've had generations to nurture their hate for the Jadwiga and Baba Yaga's servants. Mind your tongue next time, and show a little discretion."

FYI: I'm not attacking the player and don't want to generate any bad feelings, but Letitia's not the sort to just be quiet about Ashling's loose lips. :)

"Mmmm... would it be too bolt to ask whom have you lost recently? Maybe we can help there" Samuel listens attentively and is surprised by the reveal of the hut defense "The Hut defenses itself? So strange, what is the nature of that barrier?"

Samuel takes a robe and a ring out of the bag of holding and offers it to the witch "Maybe you can give a second look at these items while we wait Letitia"
According to spellcraft identifying an item with detect magic can be attempted once per day. I think the 'until you level up' rule was from D&D3

During the downtime, Samuel will craft new ammunition and powder for his musket, and spend some coin on buying eyes and mouths to find out and tell him what might have been of his sister Ariadna.

The man commissions a belt of incredible dexterity and two oils of silence in addition to the selling of the equipment found and conveniently stored in the bag of holding.

Other than that Samuel is happy to go forward into the next event

Letitia takes the robe and ring from Samuel. "Good thought. These might be useful, or at the very least, valuable."

She shakes her head in frustration. "This ring continues to elude me."

Once reunited with her familiar and with the time they have, she conducts the ritual to teach her familiar the spells in several of the scrolls she carries.
delay poison, remove sickness, remove disease, remove curse, and Irriseni mirror sight added to Lazlo's repertoire.

She then busies herself brewing potions and crafting alchemical items if requested.

I think a few potions of fly would be useful. I've already made three potions of resist energy (cold) for use by the party. Cure moderate wounds potions may not be as useful if we're buying another CLW wand. Alec's idea of some potions of darkvision could come in handy. Any other requests? Alchemist's fire? Tanglefoot bags?

Nah, i get it, its all in roleplay

They cant afford to just attack in the desperate state they're in, They're losing and they need a miracle. It's a the enemy of my enemy situation at worst. The only reason they initially posed aggression was out of fear, we came without a showing of aggression. I viewed it as a calculated risk, and to advance my own goals, now we have little choice but to avoid side tracking and go for the hut, which if my hunch is correct should work fine for us due to the mantle. she maintains a stoney faced demeanor, Cold and blank, almost inhuman for one as young as she, they could not afford to lose a potential ally at the moment, its obvious to see. Also, the trick to fighting mages is to not give them preparation time. Elvanna has had too much as is. Secrets and honesty are deadly blades when played correctly, now we have allies that are apologetic for being overly aggressive, of anything we doubled our winnings so i do not understand the cause of your anger

Alec quietly leaned against the wall as the tension in the room rose. He found it hard to disagree with either side. Letitia was right. Their hosts could have easily attacked out of fear, and they could still betray the small group. They could be working towards that end as the five of them waited for whatever was to come next.

But Ashling wasn't wrong either. Her gambit had seemed to paid off, for now. Her argument made sense. It was all too much for the simple woodman to comprehend.

"It wasn't your secret to tell." The words had escaped his lips as soon as he thought them.

"I'm going to get some sleep. It's been a long journey and I fear we're only getting started."

Callix snorts at Alec's comment, then says, "Our anger is because this group lives in constant fear of witches killing them, and reacting in fear happens before people can start making logical decisions about potential allies. However, done is done and the fact that you can't understand how that may have - nay, almost did - blow up in our faces means there's no point continuing the conversation."

She shakes her head, sighing, Mother seems to be getting her revenge all around -- I'm in the North following her destiny, and now I'm dealing with an impetuous teenager with more bravado than sense. By the cask and tankard, it's as if Ingrit found herself a ring of wishes.

"Ok, cool down people. Reserve your spit for the mirror men and Elvanna's minions" Samuel growls in a pace making tone "We shall have our hands busy while we wait or we are going to end fighting. Does any of you want to help me create some powder? I can teach you on the way if you are interested"

"Also we might want to learn a common code language, some esoteric language rare enough that we can use it to talk between us next time we are in front of unwanted ears and decide as a group before we take a risky move"

Letitia glowers at Ashling. She folds her arms as she stands over her. "Strange talk for an 'assassin.' All secrets get out, do they? Then how do you practice your trade? Go into town and announce to everyone your intended target? If feelings don't enter into it, then I'm sure the person you wish to kill will have no qualms about waiting quietly for you to do the deed." Her tone grew from curious to increasingly mocking. "If you can't understand the need to sometimes keep a secret, then you may be more of a liability than a help to us."

Turning to Samuel, she says, "I speak Taldane, Hallit, Skald, Giant, Infernal and Sylvan. Most of those are common enough around here in Irrisen. What language would you suggest I study next?"

"Maybe some distant language like Tien or a dead one like Shory. Although dead ones have a lot of words we use in modern languages" Samuel reflects aloud with Letitia "We will need to find someone able to teach it to us, or at least some book from where to learn. So Tien is perhaps easier and exotic enough to work as a code language between us"

Samuel bit his tongue, understanding Ashling is affected by what is going on and preferring to let things calm down before engaging it "It seems many of us we speak Sylvan already"

Letitia rubs her shoulder and glares at Ashling's back.
