As the hobgoblin is finally slain, Hamailii dries her tears, approaching Tal'ariel, hugging her for comfort and to morn the fallen hero.

It was his way it seems. Yet, i believe there is a chance we can get him back. We have this salve with us which possesses magical powers and i believe we have the favor of Desna now. With the right preparation and ritual performed, i could call her favor and gather her luck for Bran. I would need to prepare him, ritual washing and tracing holy runes on his skin, it would take a few hours, but he could come back. We shouldn't do this here though. What do you think?

In the midst of mourning, Tal awakens as if from a dream. "The Salve of Second Chance! Yes, we should go to a proper space and prepare the ritual. It might not quite be the same as having Bran back, but it's something. And we have no greater need than right now."

Tal signals for the owls to return, and makes preparations to depart. There was a path forward.

You take some time and wrap Bran's body in two cloaks, then tie it with rope.

Blue (Bran's giant owl) carries him gently in her talons as she flies.

You arrive back at the Hammerfist Holds after nightfall. It is a safe place, where you will be able to conduct the ritual.

The sentries in the watchtower send a message, and soon after you land in a mountain meadow, Thaardin Ironhand (the High Priest of Torag) comes out with several clan leaders and generals.

"Did you find the Ghostlord's lair? And the Red Hand? What about... who's that?"

They see the cloak-wrapped body, and count your number. "Bran, wasn't it? The human?"

The dwarves stop asking questions and gather around. Several whisper quiet prayers. The High Priest steps forward and asks quietly, "Did you bring him here to bury him? But not in the dirt, surely? We can find him a place of honor in our vaults."

"Thank you, High Priest. Bran fought nobly and died wrestling a mighty Behir so that we could slay the beast and its master, one of the Red Hand's Wyrmlords. But you should know that we did not come here to bury Bran or place him into the vaults. Instead, we are here to restore him to life. We have a powerful ungent that will allow for Bran's spirit to be reincarnated into a new body, or so we believe. Hamailii will be doing the ritual, and we are hoping you would allow us a safe space for this process."

The High Priest of Torag wears a long blacksmith's apron and carries a hammer - an actual forge hammer rather than a warhammer. He has numerous plates riveted to his apron with Dwarven runes on them. His long white beard is braided, and is thriving much more than the receding hair on the top of his head. Thaardin Ironhand's voice is a bit hoarse with age, but still resolute and confident.

"We could offer you our temple, but... you follow Desna, correct? So you would need to do the ritual under the stars. Would this meadow be appropriate? We let this grow fairly wild for wildflowers and herbs. Dwarves are not a wholly subterranean people, not after the Quest for Sky. We also have sheep pastures and some fields for wheat and barley."

"I will bring clean cloths, water, and any reagents or ointments that might be needed for Hamailii's ritual."

A heavily-armored dwarf with a heavy pick steps up and speaks in a low voice to the High Priest. Standing next to him is a dwarf woman, also in fullplate but bearing a warhammer.

"Yes. There has been Red Hand activity in the area. Some wyverns have been spotted, with riders. They may have been looking for you, or scouting our defenses. And of course there are hill giants and bulettes in these hills. Duric here is the leader of the Diamond Wall, the knights who are our last line of defense. He will stand guard while you complete the ritual, along with his sister Thrais. We will also have a sentry in the tower manning the ballista."

Thank you very much! The meadow will do i think, as long as we can see the night sky. If it is a bit protected from prying eyes, the better. It is a good idea of you two to stand guard. The ritual should not be interrupted or i can't guarantee what will happen. It is already something with many moving parts. Who knows, perhaps Bran will come back as a dwarf?
Hamailii seems a bit worried and thoughtfull, but also thankfull.

It is my first time for this ritual, i do remember all the rites though. Cloth and water will be good, also if you have any oils for his body? And a purple and silver color so i can trace some runes on him?
She considers the dwarves for a moment.
I'm glad your people had that quest for the sky. Can't imagine how you lived before, never seeing the sky and the stars!

"Thank you for your hospitality. And thank you, Duric and Thrais, for standing with us as we complete this ritual. I don't know if the Red Hand mean to attack you directly, but they might. How are your defenses? The human villagers have been retreating behind the walls of Brindol to make a stand, and we have even rallied the elves of the Blackfens to offer aid in Brindol's defense. We are doing our best to disrupt the Red Hand's plans and defeat some of their leaders before the army arrives."

A junior dwarf priest arrives some time later with sacred oils as well as some silver and purple pigments.

"There are sights in the Darklands," says Thaardin, "that are as wondrous and beautiful as the expanse of the night sky. Great terrors as well, but I understand the space between the stars has those as well. Well, it is a good life we have now, and we aim to keep it.
I do not know if the Red Hand will come for us. Our defenses are exceptionally sound, built and reinforced over generations. Fortifications, traps, strong gates, and winding passages and tight corridors. Chokepoints where two or three Knights of the Diamond Wall can hold the line, a rank of pikes behind them."

You notice that both Thrais and Duric have a pattern engraved on the shield-arm of their plate armor. Tall rhombuses, side points touching, forming a ring around the bicep. (Like the "diamonds" in a deck of cards.)

"There are not so many of us. The price for living in tunnels is that food is hard to grow, and living space hard to expand. But what we do have, we can defend against a force many times larger. In tight quarters, greater numbers are useless. Still, the Red Hand may eventually conjure the magic to collapse our tunnels, and that would be an end to us. We may be able to send some help to Brindol, but our most elite (and cave-specialized) warriors will need to remain here. The Hammerfist Holds represent our best hope of survival."

I have a few things to set up before we move on, might be Monday. I'll do what I can to get to it before then.

"You help us, we help you." Gaius adds abruptly. "It is the right thing to do."

The High Priest listens to Tal'ariel, then says, "Yes, I believe we can help. It may take a couple of days, but I imagine Bran will need to recover his strength if your ritual is successful. We can further enchant your sword, for example. Armor is our greatest strength. I can give you a blessing of Torag to strengthen your armor for the night."

He casts Magic Vestment on Tal'ariel's armor, increasing it to a +2 for the next eight hours.
"I have only rarely seen the Elven Curve Blade before. A fine weapon for an elegant people. May I give it a blessing? It should allow the weapon to strike deadly wounds."

He's a Forgemaster cleric, and tracing four Powerstrike runes on the sword will make it Keen for seven hours.

Normally it would take 6 days to increase a sword from +1 to +2, but with the archetype and some feats and items it will only take him 2 days. He can make it flat-out +2, or add a +1 enhancement of some kind if you want. But that will start in the morning.

At Gaius's comments, he looks slightly offended. One of the clan leaders speaks up. "What, you think we are just greedy? That we would only help you if you help us? That this is a transaction?"

The High Priest waves a hand to quiet the other dwarf. "I think this one is suffering from a curse of some sort. May I?"
Assuming Gaius allows it...

"Thank you, I think Gaius needed that. The spectral lions we fought seemed to strike at our very beings. I also suffered, but not as deeply." She rubs at the spectral claw mark on her face.

"And thank you for your offer to enchant my sword. It would be an honor to have a skilled Forgemaster to work on this. My sword was gifted to me by my father, a master smith in Kyonin, at a time in my life when I needed something new to hold on to. I think sadly that you appreciate such fine craftsmanship more than most elves. The blade is exceptionally light, allowing a trained user to wield it gracefully despite its size. It means a great deal to me and is also the conduit I use for my magics."

Tal looks to the sky. "I will gladly part with the sword in the morning, but for now, we must keep vigil as the ritual commences."

Still waiting for Bran to check in, but time to move this along.

You find a spot at the edge of the valley, near the entrance to the dwarf caverns. A guard tower rises above the tunnel, with the portcullis open. Two dwarves in the tower keep watch with a ballista on a pivot.

From your vantage point, you can see down into the meadow. Hamailii can be under the stars as needed for the ritual, but you have the protection of the watch-tower and the opportunity to run into the caves if needed.

Map updated.

Hamailii prepares Bran's body with the proper sacred oils, pigments, and runes. She times certain diagrams to the movement of celestial bodies, waiting until that star is in just the right place before tracing that silver line across the warrior's forehead.

Is it the precision of a clock-maker? The artistry of a painter? Hamailii is lost in the ritual and cannot tell you, but it seems like she is giving herself over to divine inspiration. A dab of pigment here, a slight adjusting of a cloak there, and all the time looking back and forth between the stars and Bran.

Sometime after midnight, a winged shape appears as a shadow across the stars. A cry from the watchtower issues forth.

Dwarven:
"Wyvern! Rider!"

The dwarves in the tower aim the ballista and fire.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Confirm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Damage: 3d8 ⇒ (5, 7, 4) = 16

Fly: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

Struck by the massive bolt, the wyvern screeches and flies off.

The owls, resting in the field, are ready to take off after the wyvern, but the creatures are intelligent and know this could be a trap. Blackthorn flaps his wings and hoots at Tal'ariel, tilting his head inquisitively.
Should we go?

"To arms!" says Thrais. She takes up a position next to her brother.

She turns to her brother and holds her warhammer up, "Through the determination of the Father!"

A rhythmic chant echoes over the hills. Not many voices, perhaps ten or so.
"Ka! Hoo! Ha! Koo! Ka! Hoo! Ha! Koo!"

It grows louder.

"We've been discovered! Gather close--I have few magics left but can still shield us from evil."

Assuming people circle around, Tal tries to wait for the right moment before casting Protection from Evil Communal on up to 5 targets. (I would propose myself, Hamailii, the two dwarves, and Trellara, mostly because Gaius already has a +2 Ring of Protection).

If she gets another round to prepare, she would then cast Shield on herself.

*Edit* - Or she would cast Enlarge Person if that would help Gaius (does it)?

We'll make it Enlarge Person on Gaius! You just have to be within 35 feet when the spell goes off. In fact, it's smarter if I cast that first since it has a longer duration, so I guess Enlarge Person, Protection from Evil Communal, and Shield in that order.

Okay, you can all have another round or two of prep if you wish as the chants grow closer.
Duric and Thrais, let me know what weapons you have in hand, and if you have used your Tactician abilities or a potion or anything.
None of you are considered flat-footed, and you all may have actions readied if you wish for when the enemies appear.

The chanting grows louder as a number of monstrous faces crest the ridge. Eight of them are horrific goblinoids, seven feet tall and covered in grey fur. Two of these bugbears have their fur dyed a chalky white, and carry greataxes. The other six have morningstars and shields. Lumbering next to them is an enormous brute, a hill giant towering twice the height of a man. A massive maul is across his back, and he wears a patchwork coat of mail. The giant carries a boulder in both hands.

Three wyverns fly overhead, one with a rider. The owls look up and screech, ready to take to the air to challenge the wyverns. Tal'ariel and Gaius are free to ride with them, or fight on the ground, as they choose.

Intiative:

Tal'ariel: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Gaius: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Trellara: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Wyverns: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Giant Owls: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

The tower guards point the ballista at the wounded wyvern and fire. The massive bolt strikes true again.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

Sweet! 37 charges left of Mage Armor. Also, Tal's shield spell comes from a wand so it only lasts for a minute. 36 charges on that left.

"Make them come to us!" says Tal. Not trusting her skills in mounted combat, she focuses her energies on awaiting the onslaught of bugbears and the boulder-carrying giant. She drinks a Potion of Cat's Grace. Effectively +2 Dex since it stacks with her Boots.

She also calls out in Sylvan. "Noble owls, guard the ballista from the wyverns!"

Will be using the following buffs in this order, Enlarge Person Potion (10 rounds), Shake It Off (6 Rounds) then drawing the Warhammer and shield (repositioning next to Hamaiili).

"Let them come. I am ready."

She blesses her weapon, and the flame of Torag's forges shine forth Flaming against oncoming hoards. As she lets out a yell to complete the blessingher legs and armor meld into the ground as stone rises up over her.

Defensive Stance. I really wanted to use Brace here but not enough actions unfortunately.

Tal'ariel drinks a potion and becomes faster.
Gaius fires off two arrows at who?.
Thrais gets big when she hears the enemy getting close (two rounds before they appear), then activates Tactician when they are almost upon you (one round before), and then when she sees them she ignites her hammer and enters her Defensive Stance. Note that she gains +2 AC between Enlarge, Prot Evil, and the stance - the -2 Dex from Enlarge doesn't hurt her AC since she was above the armor's Max Dex, so the effect is -1 size and +2 Dodge, and a net +1 Deflection.

Shake It Off - all allies within 30' at the time she shared it get +1 to all saves per adjacent ally, up to a +4 maximum.

Trellara starts Inspire Courage (will apply the +2 to Gaius's attacks). She moves up behind Thrais, buckler and whip ready.

Ha! Those mountain scum will not disturb this ritual!

Duric swings his hammer at the leather cord and throws it towards the wounded wyvern.
Hammer: 1d20 + 13 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 13 - 2 + 2 = 151d8 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 2 = 17
Hammer: 1d20 + 13 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 13 - 2 + 2 = 151d8 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 7 + 2 = 16
Hammer: 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 2 + 2 = 211d8 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 2 = 15

Red wyvern, rapid shot, inspire courage.

Duric, the range increment on the Dwarven Ram Hammer is 10', so maximum range is 50', and they are further away than that. You could ready a single throw for when they get in range, or do something like use Tactician to share Shield Wall and enter your defensive stance. Or use your own potion of Enlarge if you want. Remember you can also have taken a round or two of prep time.

Map is here.

I'm going to let Duric take his pre-combat actions retroactively when he posts again.

Gaius's arrows strike the middle wyvern (Red) for 16 damage.
Now at -43.

The wyverns move and attack.

First, Blue attacks Thrais, taking the AOO.
AOO, Stance, IC: 1d20 + 12 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 12 + 2 + 2 = 18
Her swing is a bit hasty and she just barely misses.
It tries to sting her, but she blocks it at the last second. She should be AC 29 at the moment, I believe.
Sting: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28

Then Red, assuming that Blue has distracted Thrais, makes a charge attack on the ballista crew. (It is my ruling that you can charge while flying, apparently this is unclear in PF.)

However, Thrais has Combat Reflexes and can strike at him too.
Will Thrais take the AOO, and if so, attack for damage or use Stand Still? After that I will resolve the rest of Red's turn and then Black.

Thrais (AOO) and Duric (pre-buffs and readied/delayed action) are up.
Duric, you can use those hammer throws on the Blue or Red wyvern if you want now that they are within range.

Stand Still because it almost never comes up.

Thrais sees a target trying to move past her and decides the slam her hammer into it to prevent it's movement.

CMB: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

However it manages to make it through her stonewalling, slamming her nearly from her position.

CMB, Enlarged, IC, Stance: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 10 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 33
The wyvern is halted in midair.
I'm not sure how Stand Still interacts with the Fly skill, will treat it as if taking damage for the purpose of losing altitude.
Fly: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
The wyvern stays at 15' altitude.

Had it rolled for you, but you edited your post to add a roll while I was working on my post. We'll go with your roll... Thrais is going to get enough opportunity to shine in this sort of fight that a '1' on that roll is no big deal.

The wyvern stings at one of the tower guards, to no avail.
Sting, Cover: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (5) + 10 - 4 = 11

The remaining wyvern stays out of Tal'ariel's reach and makes a charge attack on Gaius, but he dodges the deadly sting.
Sting, charge: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 10 + 2 = 23

The bugbears move up, trying to get past Thrais but wary of her reach.

Four of the owls take to the air and attack the wyverns! Blackthorn seems to be waiting for Tal'ariel.

Bran's owl Blue makes the wyvern pay for his attack on the tower, knocking it downwards towards the ground.

The giant hurls a boulder at Hamailii, then moves up drawing his Earthbreaker.
Attack, Cover: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (8) + 8 - 4 = 12
The boulder might not have hit Hamailii, even though she is relatively defenseless, but still it veers aside and bounces off Thrais's buckler.
The giant roars a challenge, and the veins in his neck swell as the fury builds within him.

The two white-painted bugbears move up, drawing throwing axes and hurling them. Then they re-grip their greataxes and prepare to charge. Their breathing gets deeper, and their muscles seem to swell and shake, but they make no shouts or cries.

Adding to your crazy list of active effects, Tal has Cat's Grace up for 9 more rounds.

As the chaos descends upon the group sooner than Tal had expected, she calls out for her owl to strike.

Let's have Haste target Blackthorn. Also, I added a yellow border to the owl I think is Blackthorn and moved him into combat.

@Gaius - you had a bow in your hands. You can draw both swords and make a single attack. You don't have Quick Draw, do you?
@Duric - that works, but as per the discussion thread thrown weapons resize to their normal size when thrown by an Enlarged PC, so that would be 1d8 per hit. Only the third roll hits in Round 1. Damage: 1d8 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
In Round 2, I assume those are melee attacks so you get the full 2d6 damage.

Duric shares his defensive knowledge, and those with shields benefit.
+1 AC to Thrais, Trellara, and Duric - everybody with a shield is adjacent to someone with a buckler.

He throws his hammer several times in rapid succession. The first two throws bounce off a wyvern's hide without injuring it, but the third lands solidly and ricochets back to his hand. The wyvern reels in midair, dropping towards the ground. Black at -54.
Fly: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Gaius drops his bow, draws his swords, and cuts the wyvern attacking him. Black at -70.
Fly: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

Then Duric pummels the same wyvern with his hammer, dropping it, and turns his attention to the one attacking Thrais, hitting it twice. Black is slain; 36 damage to Blue wyvern.

Thrais is up, and Hasted.

Wow. I think he needed 20s to hit with Haste and Shield Wall. So that's 19 damage after DR.

The Blue wyvern is going to do a full withdraw. Since the first square (the one that is adjacent to Thrais and Duric) doesn't provoke, they can take AOOs as it leaves the second square, but not use Stand Still (since that requires you to be adjacent.

Thrais and Duric AOOs on Blue wyvern? - or you can save them for other enemies.
