Tal'ariel Rhuidon
I'm worried about Gaius hitting zero Cha and falling unconscious. But it's a judgment call, hard to know where it may be more important. We should add a Wand of Lesser Restoration to our buy list!
GM Zelligar
"It . . . um . . . does feel a little funny because it invokes devil magic, but really there's no lasting harm."
Yes, Tal'ariel has it on good authority from the Asmodean worshipper who sold her the wand that there is 'nothing she needs to worry about.' ;)
And, I share your (at least IC, and I wouldn't fault you for OOC) frustration about the "surprise" aspect. Uncanny Dodge really is one of the best abilities in PF... but Bran traded it out and Tal'ariel doesn't have it yet. This actually is a case where the Detect Undead spell would be useful, since ghosts have to be in contact with the surface.
Time may be a bit of a consideration, in addition to RP and theology. Gaius is down 38 after Hamailii's CLW (which missed before so she was holding the charge). So that is 4 charges of Infernal Healing (4 minutes) or about 7 charges of the CLW wand (42 seconds). You can certainly take the time if you want, but the sounds of battle plus the roar of the second lion would have alerted anybody nearby. Hamailii's Magic Circle Against Evil will last for an hour, no real concern there, and the Mage Armor spells all last for an hour as well. And maybe it isn't a big difference to take 4 minutes rather than 1.
If Gaius is fine to accept Infernal Healing we'll go with that (and mark off the 4 charges), if not then the CLW wand (and mark off 7 charges, taking the average).
One other note - the Cloak of the Hedge Wizard that Gaius has can cast Shield 1/day, which does work against incorporeal touch attacks (and stacks with Mage Armor and Magic Circle). Though it only lasts 1 minute once activated.
Tal'ariel has found a secret door at the end of the corridor.
Map updated.
Ready to move through?
Bran O'Dimm
"The sounds of war might alert more of these ghosts, we best be quick about our decision and move as soon as possible. We are dealing with a powerful necromancer here and I don't wish to stand idle while it spies on us or prepares other devious minions."
He's on board with using resources to move quickly, the place creeps him out and waiting for Asmodeus' blessing is definitely not a good enough reason for him.
Gaius Trevelyan
Gaius pays little attention to the discussion on healing, his hands rhythmically closing and unclosing on his sword hilts as he looks down the corridors ahead. Flame, sensing her master's distress keeps nudging him, but Gaius doesn't seem to notice although one hand snakes down, sheathes his sword and scratches her behind the ears.
He's really not interested right now in the fine details. As the player though I'd appreciate a full heal. I'm happy to take the risk on 4 Cha, but you guys will have to wake me up if this happens again!
Tal'ariel Rhuidon
Quick healing is fine with me. I like to offer my wand mainly to push a narrative about Tal'ariel as someone who likes flirting with dangerous magics. I'll use a charge of my wand (34 charges remain), and we can use 5 charges of the CLW wand.
Also, I take back my previous assessment--probably makes sense to heal up Gaius's charisma damage.
Tal'ariel taps Gaius once with the Infernal Healing wand. "Just so you know what it feels like," she says, before putting the wand away. She busily searches the path ahead. "See this hidden pathway here? Finally, we get to be the ones walking through walls!"
She leads the way through the secret door once the party is ready.
Bran O'Dimm
"Maybe so! This fog though... can anyone make it easier to see through? I don't mind leading the way here."
Tal'ariel Rhuidon
Tal'ariel is surprised by the appearance of fog. "I don't really have an answer to this one. Hamailii?"
Tal'ariel does throw up a Shield with her wand before walking in.
Hamailii D´Arquetai
|
Fog inside a building is quite unusual, but then, what is natural here? Fog is best blown away by wind or dissolved with fire. Perhaps it is magical, then we could try to dispel it, let me see...
Hamailii whispers something and her eyes begin to glow blueishly.
Casting Detect Magic
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29
Kn:Arcana: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
GM Zelligar
Hamailii realizes this is a Fog Cloud spell.
It can last quite a while - half an hour, at least.
Gust of Wind is the go-to spell for getting rid of such effects, but nobody has that so you would need a scroll (and Hamailii to UMD it, since Evocation spells aren't considered to be on Tal'ariel's spell list). While Dispel could remove it (with a good enough roll), that would be Hamailii's bonded item spell for the day, and you are in a lich's lair with possibly worse things to encounter.
You don't hear the sounds of any other creatures in the room.
So I'm going to assume you move carefully and see what you can within the limited radius of sight.
This room is empty of furnishings, except for a low stone bench against the western wall. Carvings of undead lions on this wall loom over the bench, as if about to pounce on anyone foolish enough to sit there. A stone spiral staircase rises up near the northeast corner, and stone doors to the north and east provide additional exits.
Door north, door east, stairs up.
Tal'ariel Rhuidon
"Maybe there's less fog if we go up?" suggests Tal, as she walks carefully through the fog. "At least the lions haven't appeared from thick air!"
GM Zelligar
This domed chamber has stone ribs rising to support a central keystone overhead. Stone stairs in the southern part of the room wind down to a lower level. Massive stone double doors block the passage to the north.
Tal'ariel: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21
Bran: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
Gaius: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
Hamailii: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31
Trellara: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
Nobody notices anything out of the ordinary.
Bran O'Dimm
Bran turns to the others, "Are we ready to open this next door? Who knows what lies inside but I'm ready for whatever it is." He leans his shoulder up in preparation to push it open.
Tal'ariel Rhuidon
Tal'ariel uses another charge from her Shield wand.
"Yes," she agrees, ready to face what was beyond.
GM Zelligar
Hamailii expressed an interest in keeping the spell for later, in case somebody gets hit on an ability score that impacts their abilities more.
The doors open into another room.
Although this chamber is empty of furnishings, it is far from unremarkable. The ceiling arches overhead, supported by stone ribs that run up the walls. Each of these ribs bears carvings of thorny plants and twisted branches. Between each rib, the stone walls are carved with the images of lions pouncing on and mauling human victims. Another set of massive stone double doors stand to the north.
Within this room are three hobgoblins, each unarmored and carrying a chain weapon with what looks like a cast-iron dragon's skull at one end and a loop of chain at the other. A few empty vials lie on the ground. They are clearly aware of you and have been preparing for combat.
Tal'ariel: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Bran: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Gaius: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Hamailii: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Trellara: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Are the enemies flat-footed or have they effectively acted. That will guide whether I charge in and cleave or cast Long Arm and hope to get an AOO.
"Wait, the Ghostlord invited you Red Hand goons?"
GM Zelligar
Yeah, I went back and forth on that.
I really dislike that aspect of the initiative rules in this situation (where they are aware of you), and I could declare that they have been "in initiative" and drinking their potions since before the door opened. But I know you have built your character to get a good Initiative bonus to get those sneak attacks. If you are okay with it, I will declare them not flat-footed and also say that the remaining PCs are not flat-footed. If you object, I can go with them being flat-footed (but then the other PCs would be as well).
Tal'ariel Rhuidon
I am totally on board with nobody's flat footed. Casting Long Arm.
Tal casts a spell and her arms grow impossibly long, her sword threatening to strike those who would approach her.
Bran O'Dimm
"Something I understand! Show me what those chains can do!" He almost looks excited for the approaching fight, not having to worry about undeath and spectral wails.
He moves quickly into the room expecting to take some lashes from the nasty weapons, doing his best to duck under as many as he can.
Total Defense and Move in
GM Zelligar
The monks converge on Bran.
First Red moves up and tries to use his dragonchain to grapple Bran, throwing the chain-loop end like a lasso.
Grapple: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
That doesn't work.
Black tries the same thing.
Grapple: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
He likewise fails.
Blue decides to just kick Bran in the face.
Flurry, Stunning Fist: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Flurry: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Ki: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Bran's AC is 30 with Total Defense? All the attacks miss.

Trellara cheers on the party but does not use her bardic performance at this time, seeing how things seem to be well under control.
Bran O'Dimm
Yup, +6 Dodge due to Acrobatics 3. Also I totally want these weapons now.
"Trying to pin me down? Ha!"
Gaius Trevelyan
Gaius gets a frankly disturbing smile on his face as the monks try, and miss Bran. He and Flame both hurry in and Gaius takes an additional step to catch one of the monks between himself and Bran. Activating Outflank!
Attack: 1d20 + 12 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 12 + 4 = 31 Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Confirm?: 1d20 + 12 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 12 + 4 = 28 Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Bran gets an attack if I got the crit. :)
Flame: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28 Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Tal'ariel Rhuidon
Taking my turn in Round 2, since it will come right after Hamailii.
Edit: I'm an idiot, you just had this long discussion about how Bran is not threatening. Tal'ariel delays until after Bran's turn. Then the following happens if still valid.
Taking advantage of the distraction from Bran, Tal'ariel heads in, swinging her blade toward the monks with her unnaturally long arms.
Curve Blade vs adjacent: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 2 = 27; Damage: 1d10 + 10 + 2d6 ⇒ (7) + 10 + (5, 2) = 24
Cleave (against Gaius's target): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24; Damage: 1d10 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
AC23. Long Arm, Shield.
GM Zelligar
Tal'ariel:
1) Do you want to try Acrobatics at full speed to avoid an AOO from Red? Don't think you'd have the movement to do the regular Acrobatics.
2) You threaten a crit on 18-20, don't you? Want to confirm that roll? Well, I guess we can wait until after Bran's turn and then use your turn (with those rolls) if still valid. And confirm at that time.
Tal'ariel Rhuidon
Oh, got it. I'll wait for Bran to roll Acrobatics and crit confirm. I already sort of cheated by rolling so far ahead.
Hamailii D´Arquetai
|
Hamailii draws her wand of scorching rays and shoots at a monk.
Don't think we have a map right now? Would pick the one with the clearest shot line.
Scorching Ray: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 204d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 2, 1) = 8
GM Zelligar
Gaius lands a solid hit on one, but Hamailii's scorching ray goes wide.
Monks have good touch AC, and you are shooting into melee, and one of their buff potions was Shield of Faith.
Map is up, linked in "combat maps" above.

"Go for the arm holding the chain! Get right under there!"
Bran shouts some strategies he's noticed, hoping it will help give them the edge.
Using Tactician, they seem tough to hit.
Tal'ariel Rhuidon
Tactician as in the Cavailier teamwork ability? What feat do you share?
Acrobatics to avoid AOO, full speed: 1d20 + 15 - 10 ⇒ (8) + 15 - 10 = 13
Crit confirm?: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 2 = 20; Damage: 1d10 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
Status: AC 23, Shield, Long Arm.
GM Zelligar
Bran shares his tactical knowledge.
AOO: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
Red punches at Tal'ariel as she moves by, but the elf is too nimble. She moves around and deals a solid blow to Blue, felling him!
Between the sneak attack and the crit he takes 42 damage and Bran would get an AOO from Outflank if he wanted. Blue was the one that had used his ki for an extra attack and not AC, so a 20 confirmed.
Then the Cleave attack on Red hits.
don't forget Sneak Attack!: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9 Flame threatens in Mauler form, which by his attack I see he is in, so that's a flank.
And drops him. With one impossible swing, Tal'ariel drops both monks, managing to hit their vital organs despite their best attempts to dodge.
And now Tal'ariel gets a Cleaving Finish because she dropped both Blue and Red?

Outflank is a great feat, and maybe should go on the list of feats for Tal to take.
Tal'ariel slashes furiously through the enemies, striking at the third monk after felling the first two!
Cleaving Finish: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21; Damage: 1d10 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
GM Zelligar
The last monk is agile enough to dodge, although he knows his fate draws near. He throws caution to the wind and puts everything into offense.
"In pain I learn strength! Through sacrifice I gain glory!"
He attacks Tal'ariel with a flurry of blows. She is stunned by a kick to the head, and her Elven Curve Blade clatters to the ground.
Attack, Stunning Fist: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Tal'ariel Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Blessing of the Faithful (+2 sacred bonus, 40 feet) (Su) Ally gains in close range gains +2 atk, skills, ability checks, saves or AC.
Gaius Trevelyan
Gaius and Flame close as one, raining blows on the monk.

Grapple: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27
Monk CMD, this might not work.
GM Zelligar
Yep, that works.
Bran grabs a hold of the monk.

Attack: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 10 + 2 = 32 Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Yep! :)
Gaius thrusts his sword neatly through the monks defences and into his heart.
GM Zelligar
The last hobgoblin falls to the ground.
They each have one unused potion, quickly identified as Cure Moderate Wounds. And they each wear Bracers of Armor +1 and carry masterwork light crossbows and masterwork dragonchains.
Constrict: If the wielder successfully initiates a grapple while wielding the dragonchain; he can loop the weapon around the opponent. He constricts his opponent for 1d8 damage (plus 1-1/2 times his Strength modifier). On subsequent rounds he can use the dragonchain to deal constriction damage with a successful Combat Maneuver check (all bonuses and penalties to grappling apply). In addition, the chain provides a +2 circumstance bonus to the Combat Maneuver check made to deal this constriction damage.
Dragonchain: Exotic two-handed melee weapon; cost 50 gp; damage 1d4 (S); 1d6 (M); critical 19-20/x2; weight 10 lbs; type bludgeoning.
Another set of double doors lies to the north.
Tal'ariel Rhuidon
"Ugh, that last monk got me good," says Tal, as she rubs her head. "Seems to me the Ghostlord wouldn't invite the Red Hand in like this under any normal circumstances." She helps herself to a bit more devilish healing and then picks up her sword.
Infernal Healing, 33 charges remain.
She then checks out the door.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17
Gaius Trevelyan
Gaius glowers at the bodies and waits, obviously impatient for the rest of the group to patch themselves up.
"Come on!" He mutters, "The longer we wait the more time they have to prepare!"
GM Zelligar
Finding no traps on the door, Tal'ariel opens it and you move on to the next room.
Within the open maw of the massive stone lion’s head is a large balcony built into the lion’s lower jaw. Large stone teeth, each three to five feet high, ring the balcony’s edge. The lion’s upper jaw arches ominously above, the roof of its mouth fully fifteen feet overhead. A rope ladder lies rolled up to one side. It is about fifty feet down the the ground below.
If you hadn't found the secret door in the cave in the lion's chest, then this would be the other way to get in - climb up the side of the lion to the jaws. That is why the monks are stationed here, to guard against entry that way. Why they are stationed in another room, and not on the balcony itself to attack people while they are climbing, is a fair question.
Outside, you see storm clouds gathering. Thunder rumbles, and rain begins to fall.
Hamailii: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
Trellara: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Tal'ariel: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
Tal'ariel recognizes with a shock that this is no natural storm - it is the effect of powerful magic. Such magic is normally only possible as a lengthy ritual involving multiple spellcasters, or from an artifact.
Off in the distance, you see something scrambling over the barren hills towards the lion. It is maybe a mile away or so, but Huge, and moving pretty fast. It looks like a many-legged lizard.
