I have a scout, rocketeer, medic, infantry, engineer, assault and a brand new guy. Only the medic has more that 2 ranks though, so no halo-targeting, shred other than one rocket on the missile guy or much in the way of talents. As I said I have 3 teams on cool down and a whole pile of injuries right now so my A-team this is not. I just did the newfoundland mission, somehow without losing a guy and only having to re-load once.
Edit: when i get mechs, which i hope is really soon. I desperately need some more firepower, which class should I upgrade? I am thinking an engineer.

As you can tell by my character I would say Assault but that isnt you if your gut says something you should go with it.
Now i've thought about Callsigns for people
Anna: Angel
Jack: Tank
Mark: Snake
Roger: Techie
Bob: Loader
Jessica: Monk
Lema: TBD

I mean, I've always found Snipers, especially with Squadsight, to be a godsend in my games.
@Pete: Yeah, played Longwar. Its fun and goes a long way to making it feel a lot more fair at times especially on the tougher difficulties.
Monk/Ghost/Shadow would work haha! Jessica doesn't talk much and just follows Anna around (I also have a one-track mind so I sometimes forget to make her interact :x )

Snipers are amazing, I just didn't bring one since it was supposed to be a built up urban area and all my good snipers are fatigued/ wounded.
One of my favorite things about long war is the increased options for classes and increased choice in each class. In regular x-com lots of choices were super obvious for abilities at each rank. In long war, I usually want at least 2 of the 3 options. Still some obvious ones like the gunner with halo targeting and shredder ammo.

Argh! Yeah. But even in Urban Settings, Squadsight alone makes them just sooooo good when you get it.
Before that, Its pretty much them Camping on top of a building which might not be the best thing ever.
By the end, all I had was: Sniper, Psytrooper Medic and as many Mechtroopers as I could possibly sustain.

For anybody interested, This War of Mine has a board game rendition on Kickstarter. It looks amazing and currently comes with many free expansions tossed in due to overwhelming support and having many stretch goals unlocked.
Jack has been called many things over his career, he'll answer to just about anything the group decides.

Thanks for bringing this Kickstarter to our attention Jack.
Regarding call signs, Roger isn't being funny. Roger's demeanour is 'lateral thinker', so I try to go for a bit of the 'unconventional' in his ideas. 'Tea time' is perhaps the most obvious, very 'English' but also dictating as Mark is their leader, because when it is 'tea time' we obey it and stop what we were doing. Jack is a big tough American, what is bigger and more beloved than the American burger? Peanut butter was invented by an African American, and is one of the most beloved food in America. Roger may not always agree with Pete, but he still likes him. 'Bones' is simply a reference to Star Trek the original series, McCoy is cool as hell, as is Anna.
I hope none took offence to the names Roger suggested, Roger is simply a little bit of an oddball :D

The only note about Jack's call sign is that he is, in fact, a Canadian! (Canadian) "Bacon" or "Moose" would probably be more along the lines of Roger's train of thought =)

In that case he'll suggest the name "Robot King" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNJmfuEWR8w

Awareness: Known 100xp -> +10 200xp (aptitudes Perception & Fieldcraft)
Perception 1st Advancement (+5?) 100xpTotal of 400xp.

\o/ I, for some reason, thought the Bones was a reference to the show of the same name lol.
haha! give me some credit

As to death, I'm not fully sure. It depends on how much you want to preserve the premise of X-com in a way. Those who live longer go up in rank, strength, and experience. Very rarely is the new person at the same level as your A-Team, though they tend to benefit from the progress set forth by said team ( Equipment and other available functions)
Im pretty neutral on that.

So maybe new people come back with half the XP their last character had?

I can see that, if such a thing happens. Although it'll be pretty hard until after people burn their fate but I'm not opposed to that rule. Overall X, while nice is not that much of a factor past creation and the first maybe 5 missions.
Once you have Awareness Dodge and your key character defining abilities it is simply specialization and competence.
Pete has some stuff down the melee route but thats different.

Personally, I'd say just come back with equal XP.
In Xcom you play the whole team, so it's not a big deal if one or two people are underpowered, you've still got the characters you love in there. But I'd worry that people here would lose interest if they are playing at a lower level. Also it would mean they'd be more likely to die again.

Roger will be switching out his C-8 for an M16. He'll work on customizing the grip on the new gun for himself
Tech-Use 34: 1d100 ⇒ 19
He'll requisition a Flak Vest and a Helmet. Trade out his Photo-visor for a Rebreather.
...not sure what to use the +1 rarity on, if anyone needs something you can borrow it.

Well, in terms of Gear, I'm totally swapping out the C8 with the Tracer Rounds for an M16 with Manstopper Rounds instead. If I can, I'll keep the Custom Grip and Modified Stock (I assume I can).
With the +1 Rarity...I guess I could give Jessica Tracer Rounds since that gives a further +5BS if they're helping you shoot.
Otherwise, I'm spending my XP as previously stated.

I've tried games where people come back with less XP, and it always ends in a spiral of death - weaker characters die more easily, and come back incrementally weaker and weaker. My vote is for people to come back with the same XP.
I'd like an armourer to put a Custom Grip on my M4. Wasn't as accurate with it as I'd have liked, which is why Mark is going to spend some downtime on the range with it.

IF: Jack has access to an alien strength stun taser,
THEN: Jack invests up to 500xp on training and banks any remaining.
ELSE: Jack drops 500xp on Awareness and Ballistic Skill (1)
Jacks load out:
Heavy launcher
Combat shotgun
Electric Taser or Electric Pistol
Slots
Rocket (+1 bonus for total of 2)
EMP rocket x2 (?)
Rebreather
Bag of manacles (?)
I have a rarity to "invest" if that's what's needed. Submitted my ADREP to the QM, curious to see what they do. I make my intent known to try and capture them alive, that should garner some support.

The Idea I had for the Armor would be 5 to everywhere but -20 to Agility checks, No heavy weapons. Since its basically more plates along the arms and legs and more weight. A name like Flak Armor or Flak Suit (Experimental).
With this they can test different metals with the plates to calibrate in Pete's armor what will be needed to reduce the damage from the alien tech. Which inadvertently may accelerate research on the weapons themselves.
It would likely take Pete's rarity to do as I would think there wouldnt be more than one.
Otherwise he will use it to get Mono on his Blade.

Browman I'm confused when you say go to that location what do you mean? Do you mean we go to the cave entrance OR go into the caves from a different location?
You landed 2 kilometers north of where HQ thinks the enemy craft landed. You know of entrances to the cave system between where Powerline dropped you off and the location of the enemy Landing Zone.
Are you going to enter the cave through one of those entrances or go to the enemy LZ?
