Myna |
Myna continues past the bend in the tunnel and carries on until something or someone stops him. He keeps his eyes peeled for anything out of the ordinary, as well.
Generic Dungeon Master |
Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 63, approximately 10:20 am (turn 5 of 6)
Myna moves to the north, and then to the east, and quickly comes to another side passageway that is ten feet wide, and this one, going to the north, almost immediately turns back toward the west. He takes note of it, and warns the others to watch as they pass it by, to be sure nothing surprises them from the rear.
Just a few feet further to the east and the passageway Myna is following jogs south and then east again and comes to a dead end, but on the north side of the passageway there is another pair of double stone doors. The party pauses, being ads quiet as they can be, and listens to the door

Well, they way I've been doing it, and seeing it done, is Perception is what you roll if there is a chance to notice something you are not aware off, while Investigation is what you roll when you want to go looking for something, so in this case I would think it is an Investigation roll, and I would say your Passive perception isn't alerting you to any dangers that might suddenly jump out at you

Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 63, approximately 10:20 am (turn 5 of 6)
Myna thoroughly examines the door for traps, while the others crowd in close.
Beldak Bracegirdle |
Beldak touches Myna's arm softly as he examines the door. He points down at the gap beneath as the shadows shift and steps to the side.
He looks back at the collected warriors. A rag tag group had he ever seen one before. He pulls the hilt of his small knife and gestures unsheathing it several times while making eye contact with each of the others.
Myna |
Myna nods to the halfling wizard and points out the dirty hand print on the door and mouths the word GOBLINS. He then moves back and unsheathes his rapier.

Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 63, approximately 10:20 am (turn 5 of 6)
Suddenly the doors are pushed open toward the party by two goblins, revealing another standing across from the doorway aiming a bow at the group of heroes!
Initiative!
Goblin Initiative: 1d10 ⇒ 9
Party initiative: 1d10 ⇒ 10
And the Goblins get the drop on you!
Catching the party a bit off guard and not quite ready the goblin fires
Who is the target?: 1d6 ⇒ 5
It is Myna, AC 14
Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
The goblin lets the arrow fly and it strikes Myna in the thigh
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Having shoved the doors open with both hands, the two other goblins now reach for the weapons on their belts and draw scimitars, and grab shields from their backs.
Anders Buckman |
Combat Round 1
Anders steps up next to Haarold (it appears from the map that we can go two abreast here?), and he swings at the other goblin in a forward position.
GA Att: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
GA Dam: 1d12 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Sir Aethorduil Tarathiel |
With two at the front and narrow door/passage ways, the paladin will move up to second rank, ready to rotate in and allow another to rotate out
Beldak Bracegirdle |
Beldak quickly moves away from the opening door so as not to be crushed. He fans out from the doorway reciting the spell he's so familiar with. "Cool off stinky!"
Chill touch attack on goblin opening west door: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5
on a success the target cannot heal for 1 turn
Myna |
Myna curses and moves out of the direct line of sight of the goblin with the bow. Looking down at the arrow sticking out of his thigh, he grits his teeth and removes the offending shaft. He binds the wound quickly and hobbles forward with the rest of the party.
1d1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Morgrym Rumnaheim |
did not see any tactical movements that could be made on the map.
Morgrym not totally unaccustomed to battle, heaves up his warhammer and strides into the fray with the goblins.

Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 63, approximately 10:20 am (turn 5 of 6)
Round 1...
Quickly coming to the realization that they are under attack, the heroes draw weapons and close with the three goblin warriors. Haarold only has to step to the side, as the door swings toward him, and then he moves in and drops his axe clean through the goblin on the right.
Anders is caught in a bit more of an awkward position, and cannot recover quickly enough as the door swigs toward him, he draws his weapon and swings, but his swing is too high.
Sir Aethorduil shoves his way through the group to come to the entrance of the chamber, but as he gauges the situation and plans his next move, Morgrym charges passed him toward the goblin with the short bow, determined to engage his ancestral enemy. Swinging his heavy hammer in a wide arc he clobbers the goblin so hard that the enemy goes flying across the room and hits the far wall, falling to the ground dead.
Beldak, seeing that Anders has swung too high, drops into a defensive position, extends a hand and fires a magic bolt of freezing air at the last remaining goblin. The bolt catches the goblin in the face, and it howls in a rage.
Myna and Sir Aethorduil may make attacks this round, if the goblin survives I will roll initiative for round 2

Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 63, approximately 10:20 am (turn 5 of 6)
End of combat encounter
The doorway is crowded, the dwarves and the human shuffle side to side as individuals make room for their comrades as they rush in, swing weapons, and fall back to assess their injuries.
Thinking quickly, Sir Aethorduil spots an opening between Anders and Haarold, and notices a goblin still standing after being struck by some kind of magic, and as the goblin wipes its eyes the elven knight dashes forward with his long sword extended and drives the blade home high in the goblin’s chest, killing him before he can attack one of the others.
As quick as it began, the battle is over, and three goblins lie dead on the floor.
Looking left and right, for any other ambushers, Morgrym examines the small chamber and finds it is safe, there are no more goblins. However he also sees that this room, though small, is a sort of armory, and that raises questions in his mind.
The chamber measures thirty feet, east to west, and twenty feet, north to south. The entrance doors lie in the center of the south wall. This small chamber has a weapons racks, made from well cut, strong pieces of Black Oak. On the rack are; 5 long swords, three wooden shields (Black Oak), and two daggers. All of these items are of good quality, not superior, but certainly not poor.
Beldak Bracegirdle |
"These are interesting, eh boys? Nice make for goblinworks. Too good even." Beldak says as he walks around the room inspecting everything.
investigation, secrets: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
He takes one of the daggers as he passes by the weapon rack. It'll certainly offer better protection than his penknife.

Once again I would like to remind anyone who wants to make Perception or Investigation rolls, certain types of activity require more time than other types of activity, a casual Perception or Investigation Check might not turn up the hidden things that you are looking for, so going a bit further with your post, you could say, "I'm searching the west wall for the signs of a secret door, a casual perception check and if that reveals a clue, I will spend ten minutes Investigating a ten foot section of the wall." Okay? thanks
Generic Dungeon Master |
Beldak begins a systematic inspection of the walls, floor and ceiling of the room, looking for clues, while Myna glances around casually, looking to pick up a clue.
Elves, in 5e, have proficiency with perception, because they have "Keen Senses." We didn't have any elves in the party when we started, so I never talked about this. Here is what I'd like to do. Elves in 1e had a chance of detecting the presence of a secret door merely by passing within 10 feet of it, and in this game, where I am setting restriction on how long it takes to search for secret doors, I'd like to suggest a new house rule, for elves.
How does that work for you guys?
Myna |
Myna walks over to the west wall and begins to examine the entire area. He pokes and prods several parts of the wall, as well as the floor. He seems to be looking for something.
Ok, so my perception twinges as I go pass the wall, so now I will use Investigation to search the west wall or just take the 10 minutes to find the hidden switch? Is that correct?
Beldak Bracegirdle |
Aethorduil notes Beldaks interest.
What has attracted your eye there Beldak?
Nothing too special. It's a strong wood though and more recently has gained praise for adding interesting flavor to wines that are barreled using it. This wood would fetch a fair price anywhere but more so in the right Alodoan markets.
Sir Aethorduil Tarathiel |
Pity none of the shields bear Pelors crest... none the less I'll take one as a back up. He helps himself to a shield and slings it over his back pack and secures it there.
Myna |
Myna limps over to his friend and nods.
"Might be for the best...just in case we run into more of those goblins! Don't want to slow the party down. Also, there is something about this wall....I cannot quite put my finger on it, but I think it conceals something...."

Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 64, approximately 10:30 am (turn 6 of 6)
Anders stands above the fallen goblin, and suddenly he begins to wonder where the other companions, may have wandered off to, and thinking that they may need his help, he excuses himself, telling the others he will be back soon, but is just going to go back and check behind the group to be sure those others are not in peril. He hesitates, by the doors for a moment, looking into the room at the elves as they examine the west wall
Myna is convinced there is something not altogether right about the west wall, and after carefully examining almost every single stone, he finds a hidden door, opened by shifting a stone both up and to the right.
The door slides in and to the side and reveals a low, short tunnel, five feet long that then opens into a small hidden room adjacent to the chamber. The room is only five feet wide, east to west, and the north wall lies along the same line as the north wall of the chamber, but the secret room extends to the south. How far south it goes cannot be determined without crawling through the tunnel to investigate.
Check for a WME: 1d12 ⇒ 1
WME is?: 1d12 ⇒ 8
Number of Goblins?: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Sneaky Attempt to ambush the party: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
The party mills about within the chamber, and Myna peers through the tunnel wondering if he should investigate the space beyond when suddenly the sound of bow strings is heard, as a group of goblins comes around the corner with bows at the ready and surprise the party!
No one in the party has a Passive Perception high enough to avoid being surprised by the war band of Goblins that has sneaked up on you. I will make four Arrow Attack rolls randomly assigned to the party
Attack #1: 1d6 ⇒ 6 = Sir Aethorduil
Attack #2: 1d6 ⇒ 4 = Morgrym
Attack #3: 1d6 ⇒ 2 = Beldak
Attack #4: 1d6 ⇒ 2 = Beldak
Arrow Attack #1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Arrow Attack #2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Arrow Attack #3: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Arrow Attack #4: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Morgrym is struck in the back of the leg by an arrow
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
While Beldak feels two arrows hit him in the back, and falls to his knees unable to even find the breath to cry out in agony
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Beldak is at 0 hp, he is conscious and stable, but he cannot choose to take “combat” actions (actions listed on page 192 or 193 in the PHB). He can talk, and move, but his movement is reduced to 5
The party is under attack!
Round 1 Initiative
Goblins: 1d10 ⇒ 4
party: 1d10 ⇒ 2
After the initial shock wears off, the heroes spring into action
The party acts first in Round 1!
Beldak - takes 9 damage
Beldak Bracegirdle |
How would you like to adjudicate the spell shield in this case. As written it reacts to being hit by an attack and adds +5 AC against that attack and until my next turn. Understandably not enough bonus to stop the first attack but it would defy the second.
Generic Dungeon Master |
Absolutely doable, that's an interesting change to that spell I wasn't aware of. Very handy now.
Morgrym - takes 4 damage
Beldak - takes 5 damage
No, wait...as the first arrow strikes Beldak, he panics, and his mind flashes forth with the words and gestures of the shield spell he was first taught as an apprentice (which always came in handy when playing with others who liked throwing rocks all of the time). The second arrow strikes an invisible shield and bounces away harmlessly. Frightened, and injured, Beldak drops to his knees, monetarily before he realizes he is, in fact, not dead, and quickly he gets up and turns with anger toward his attackers.
Beldak Bracegirdle |
The sheen of his shield dissipates as Beldak turns to face the goblins. He's enraged at the assault but maybe more so at himself for not expecting it. He raises his staff high spreading light across the room drawing their attention upward. Eyes gleaming bright blue with fury his other hand is already outstretched. It motions as if snatching something out of the air.
"Alkorthaac tec tan! O'kaan khruur daan okec okaan der togeraan!"
A translucent gleaming hand as big as the halfling shoots forth and wraps around one of the goblins in the doorway.
chill touch; target cannot heal, 1 round: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
Beldak shifts to the side attempting to take cover behind the weapon rack.
Myna |
Myna takes a step back, and mutters the incantation to a spell. From his outstretched hand a bolt of fire shoots out to strike at the nearest goblin.
Firebolt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage: 1d10 ⇒ 8
