Broccan Dunchad |
Broccan makes a full move away from the statue, shield and hammmer at the ready.
"Iz'is one'eh th'machines the ol' rock man was talkin' bout?! How d'yeh say, "By the Stones" 'n Dwarv'n?!"
Minniwick Zookwinkle |
"Oh well, nothing is ever that easy." Toss the acid at the animated chains. To Hit 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 Splash for 5 pts.
To Broccan: Erine said they are animated and I do not see any gears or moving parts. I do not think that these are machines. Just in case
In Dwarven
Do animated objects have any weakness that I know of? Knowledge Arcane: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
Both sets of doors are already open slightly, right? Just wondering if the chains might be activated from outside to lift the bar from the doors, but that should not be necessary at the moment...
New thought: Is it possible that the chains were not part of the statue at all, but just "resting" on it?
KenderKin |
Minniwick
You know that in order to damage the object its hardness must be overcome, making blunt objects and powerful attacks necessary.....
The chains Come free of the statue and do not respond to the dwarven phrase.
The chains attempt to slam into Broccan again, the metal grating across the floor as it does so.
Attack
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
And misses him barely.....
Edrukk
Both sets of double doors are barred from inside this room, and it appears that the two hobgoblins are set to open each set of doors
next!
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
Well, so much for respecting the ancient dwarven relics...
"Broccan, Ah think Ah tol' ye wrong! 'it it, 'n 'it it wit' all ye got!
C'mon, Canvy!"
Edrukk will charge to a position where he flanks the chain with Broccan. If he can do so and attack:
Greatsword attack 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 2 = 12 Including flank bonus
Damage 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 1) + 3 = 7
AC 14 this round

In Dwarven:
Holding off on Edrukk's next swing -- I don't think it's quite his turn yet, but I think we are waiting for some folks to return from holiday.
KenderKin |
You recall that the hobgoblins were looking out of the doors on each side of the room....
The bars also will take a bit to unbar likely requiring 2 strong arms....
Unlikely that the others can damage the construct,,,,,,
The chains attack Broccan again
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Damage
1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

In Dwarven:

Holding off on Edrukk's next swing -- I don't think it's quite his turn yet, but I think we are waiting for some folks to return from holiday.
"Let's try the right." He holds up two vials of acid. "This has a much better chance of loosening the bars then damaging that construct" When he can Minniwick will make his way over to the right trying to keep out of the constructs reach.
Broccan Dunchad |
"If it'll stop'itn me, I'll be 'appy t'stop fight'n."
Broccan moves away from the statue and recovers his sword. He keeps his weapons low, and tries not to fully face the thing.
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
"Save yer acid, lad. Canvy - let's be fer gettin' 'is bar offa th' door, eh? Broccan, keep behind 'at wall ye call a shield 'n don' try 'ittin' 't while we 'open th' door." Try full defense, lad.
Edrukk will sheathe his greatsword and try to lift the bar with Canvy's assistance. Or try to assist Canvy, as is probably more appropriate. Here's a few attempts in case we don't get it the first time.
Aid another Strength check 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 Oh! So close!
Aid another Strength check 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 Bar? What bar?
Aid another Strength check 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 Better. +2 to your third attempt, Canvy!
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
was that the door on the left or the right?
Minniwick suggested right, so that's what Edrukk was headed for, avoiding the animated chain as much as possible.
Canvy Mandrain |
Back in Portsmouth now, so the holidays are almost over, hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. Normal service should be resuming, especially when I get back to work on the 5th.
Canvy, having picked up his polearm(s) moves quickly to the door on the right, avoiding the animated chain, where he drops them with a clatter. Using his immense strength Canvy tries to lift the bar on the door...
Strength check 1 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Strength check 2 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Strength check 3 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
....but....."Perhaps we should try the other door?"
KenderKin |
The door on the right opens a stone bridge arches 50 feet across a chasm. Thirty feet below lies a pool of still black water.
A wide tunnel at the back of this dark, cold cavern slopes down into darkness. A small forest of stalagmites sprouts from the uneven floor, but the cavern otherwise appears empty and unworked.
The chains attack Broccan again!
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
and fall into a heap of disorganized chains on the floor!
Broccan Dunchad |
"Les' git from 'ere 'fore th'chains get back t'gether!"
Broccan steps through the door onto the bridge, but waits for the rest of the party to move past him.
KenderKin |
The party escapes the room and quickly regroups just outside the doors.
The chains make noise for a few minutes, but it quickly becomes quite on the other side of the door.
Broccan is somewhat out of breath having pushed the heavy door closed.
It becomes apparent looking over the bridge to the large cavern beyond and the unworked tunnel into the underdark that you have actually left the Malachite fortress......
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
"Eh, looks like mebee we went out t' far. 'ow bad off 'r ye, Broccan? Ah c'n 'eal ye 'fore we 'ead 'n 'n try th' 'ther door."
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
"Well, 'en. 'n we go. Le'me got first, Ah'll circle t' th' right. Th' rest o' ye le'me get th' chain's attention 'n ye go t' th' left 'n get 'at other door open. Wa da ye say?"
Canvy Mandrain |
"Well, sounds the best of a bad job, but its a plan, let's do it, Broccan you help me open it when we get there! but before we do, does anyone know of any weaknesses that chain might have?"
Canvy readies himself, to use the polearm which can damage with its large weighted end should the chain get near them, otherwise he will go to the door and try to open it, with Broccan's help if possible.
Jumping the gun here...use these rolls when you need a strength roll for the door.
Strength roll 1 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Strength roll 2 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Strength roll 3 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
KenderKin |
As Broccan and Canvy work to open the door the chains attack Edrukk for a couple of rounds....
Chain attack #1
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Roll to confirm critical
1d20 ⇒ 8
Damage
1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Chain attack #2
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Damage
1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
The chains seem to like Edrukk!
Minniwick and Erine have some actions to declare....Edrukk has some blows to dish out as well!
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
Edrukk will return the attacks with his greatsword, moving 10' toward the other door with each swing, trying to draw the chains away from the others.
Attack #1 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Damage 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 5) + 3 = 14
Attack #21d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Damage 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 4) + 3 = 10
"Th' blasted thin' 'its like 'n ogre. 'r ye sure yer alright, Broccan?"
KenderKin |
The first attack doew noticable damage breaking a few links off the chains, the second attack loosens some more..
Hardness
Each object has hardness—a number that represents how well it resists damage. When an object is damaged, subtract its hardness from the damage. Only damage in excess of its hardness is deducted from the object's hit points
KenderKin |
After Minniwick and Erine act!
Or assuming they do not act....
The second door opens into a main hall. This Cross shaped hall leads to several locations, it is 20 feet wide in the center and 10 feet wide across from side to side, a set of double doors are above the top area, with a single door set at the top of the cross, at the bottom is another set of double doors. Each side passage has additional doorways, The west wing has 2 doors one on the left hand side, 10 feet in and one on the right hand side 20 feet in. The East wing has 3 doors, 10 feet in on both the left and right sides of the hall and a third door at the end of the hallway.
Darkvision
The far end of the hall 60 feet away you spot 2 hobgoblins, one bangs on the double doors behind them and shouts ”Croleks!”
No Darkvision
In the far distance you hear banging and a cry of ”Croleks!”
Goblin language
“Intruders!”
Canvy Mandrain |
Canvy stops in his tracks as he looks ahead, a smile of amusement and anticipation, shows his yellowing teeth in the glow of the open door. He whispers to his friends, "Ahh, more to feel our blade? You see those two hobgoblins up ahead. They're next. If you ready, count to three and we'll charge." Canvy puts his polearm into position, ready to charge forward.
Minniwick Zookwinkle |
Sorry, a combo of work and Minniwick is not much help breaking down a door.
In Goblin
Bluff 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
In common (in a soft voice) I told them we were here to buy some stock at the auction. Not sure if they will believe me but it may get us past some guards if they do.
Facepalm....
KenderKin |
The door to the room with the chains is shut and secured, with the long hallway and hobgoblins with long bows at the far end!
I thought MW and erine were sitting this one out due to the nature of the threat and the way out.....
Is everyone happy with old initistive values? Feel free to roll a new one!
Broccan Dunchad |
"More big'oblins? I can'ne see'm from'ere..."
Broccan moves forward (20 feet), and raises his shield, (full defense, +4 AC) and waits for the hobgoblins to come charging out of the darkness.
KenderKin |
Canvy moves forward swiftly with Broccan also using full defense and moving forward.....
As you move forward a pit suddenly opens across the hall before you can reach the intersection. The pit is 20 feet wide blocking the entire hallway from side to side. It is 10 feet to the far side of the pit. You stare into the 20 foot deep pit noteing the sharp spikes below and the smooth walls.
Everyone sees the pit open...
Broccan and Canvy only
Only a reflex save (DC 20) will keep you from tumbling into the pit!
Broccan apply your +4 total defense to this save
Darkvision
The Hobgoblins at the end of the hall laugh heartily and nock arrows into their longbows!
No darkvision
You hear the mocking laughter of opponents you can not yet even see!
Broccan Dunchad |
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 4 = 8
"Oh bloody'ell, not again!" Broccan swears as he falls into the spiked pit.
These virtual dice just LOVE me...LOL

Hero point use?
Reroll: You may spend a hero point to reroll any one d20 roll you just made. You must take the results of the second roll, even if it is worse.
Can not be worse!
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
"Blast 't, not ag'n!"
It's still the same day, so I don't have my spells back. No enlarged dwarf available.
Edrukk moves to the edge of the pit.
"'ey 'r gettin' ready t' turn 's int' pincushions, lads. Broccan, pass me 'at wall ye use fer a shield 'n Ah'll use 't t' cover ye 's ye climb out. If'n ye work t'gether, ye should be able t' get out, eh?"
Over his shoulder, "D'ye two 'ave 'ny idee fer dealin' wit' th' 'obgoblins? Find ye a place wit' cover from 'eir arrows - behind me 'n th' wall 'ere, 'r stay low t' th' ground."
Hmmm, I think Edrukk's getting bossy. Sorry. I can try to change him, but dwarves are stubborn.
KenderKin |
I suggested using a hero point to re-roll to avoid the pit, depending on the dice things might change for one or both of them!
Plus if they want to burn 2 points they can re-roll with a bonus to the roll, but it is up to them!
Eddruk
As you survey the dwarf construction you surmise that it can be rapidly opened but would be slow to close, you also notice the fittings between that and the wall....
You suspect another such pit lies within this very hallway!
I will need a check from you to locate it!
KenderKin |
Critical success!
Not only does Broccan manage to prevent himself from going in somehow he grabs the crazed Canvy by the shoulder thowing him back at the last instant.....
The laughing at the end of the hallway stops and is replaced by the twang of bowstrings.
Broccan
Attack #1 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Damage #1 1d8 ⇒ 2
4 points of damage
Canvy
Attack #2 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Damage #2 1d8 ⇒ 4
None
Can't win for losing....
Broccan Dunchad |
Broccan remains at Full Defense (+4 AC) behind his shield, and looks back towards his companions.
"I can'ne see'em, but they can see us! If sum'n cou' light'em up, It'd help a lot!"
KenderKin |
Broccan uses the full defense option and minniwick and Erine huddle behind as best they can trying to avoid the threat.....
Canvy can act (it seems no one else has an action at this time).....
The hobgoblin archers are 50 feet away from the edge of the pit....
Ranged attack?
