There are three possible targets either adjacent to, or within a 5-foot-step of, the Spawn of Spheres. (Berosius, Mareq, Phoebee) I'll roll to randomly determine the target, assigning numeric values alphabetically
Random Target: 1d3 ⇒ 2, 2 is Mareq
Bite: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (3) + 15 = 18, Miss
Claw: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17, Miss
Claw: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29, Damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Babbling incoherently, the Spawn of Sphere grows nightmarish claws. It takes a 5-foot-step and tries to bite and claw at Mareq. However, the ifrit's projectile vomiting has just enough force to thwart two of the creatures three attacks.

Mareq would have moved strategically, so as not to provoke an AoO. This 5-foot step would position Mareq for a move out of range on his next action.
Berosius |
With a muttered prayer, Berosius slips past the enemy and prays over Mareq's wounds.

Mareq Bolthune |
Pausing here. I'm inclined to have Lem start up a bardic performance to buff the party. Anyone have any requests? If not, then Mareq and Harrow are up. Mareq is no longer nauseated.
Lem ought to buff. ASAP. Lemme know if this buff occurs prior to Mareq's turn. Obviously, it will impact the efficacy of the two flying lions just summoned from the Plane of Air.
GM Engleaktig |
Let's say that Lem's buff happens just as the creatures are summoned; they can take full advantage of the performance. You can even give them each a flank by summoning them strategically.
Harrow, indignation and concern swelling within him in equal measure, rushes to the oracle's aid and strikes a powerful blow.
Mareq's summons sense that their quarry is injured and weak. They both pounce and, without waiting for the other to finish, tear into their prey with gusto.
Combat over!
__________
Take whatever time you need to heal, buff, or whatever else you'd like.
__________
As the party continues to explore the area, you notice that several mindshards are here. They seem irritated, for some reason. They've begin squabbling. Knowing that these creatures are fragments of Ralzeros, and knowing how powerful Ralzeros was, you quickly realize that magical combat in this realm with pieces of its creator could be... problematic...
Mareq Bolthune |
Mareq's face contorts into a rictus of happiness as the cerebric fungi are destroyed. The lions scream loudly, a roar like nothing heard here before, combining a howling animal ferocity with the crackling of lightning.
He can sense the lions' unhappiness in this weird demiplane where magic is fluctuating bizarrely. Mareq looks with his third eye, sensing the magical weave. The doorway to the Plane of Air, from whence the lions came, warps and shimmers turning from lightning blue to tones of fiery red and back again.
"I fear if I do not release Pantheri and his mate back to the Citadel of the Djinn now, they may get waylaid and cast into other, less hospitable planes," says Mareq. He waves his hands and the two lions shimmer and evaporate into the aether and their essences race through the warping planar gate, just as it closes.
Mareq Bolthune |
"I sense we are not done here..." mutters Mareq. "I'm not sure I will be able to summon allies into this space again. Do you desire my aid in preparing for what comes next, Harrow?"
Harrow, I can put Greater Invis on you, Long Arm, and Cat's Grace or BS. Let me know which/if you'd like. Greater Invis is rounds/level, so I can be ready to cast just before combat begins. Others are minutes/level.
Harrow Tatterhood |
Harrow rubs his stomach after the creatures are defeated.
"Harrow starting to think it take longer to get back than he thought. Maybe not in time for dinner," he laments.
"We keep going after Mareq feel better."
I'll certainly never turn down buffs! Thanks!
Mareq Bolthune |
Mareq casts Long Arm on Harrow, increasing the reach of his already powerful sword arm by 5ft. He brushes him with a second wand made of bone, tipped with what appears to be a cat tail.
Long Arm and Cat's Grace
Mareq stands ready to cast Greater Invisibility upon Harrow at the slightest threat.
Berosius |
Berosius worries about, as Mareq says, "what comes next.". But then he is distracted by Harrow's mention of dinner. He had a little cake in his pack for lunch and a fine sparrow sauteed in wine and wrapped in anthus leaves for supper. Would he get to supper? Maybe he should eat them now...
Eventually, the weirdness of the place impresses itself on the halfling's mind and he mostly puts aside his thoughts of food.
"The, uh, the spirits tell me we should keep moving before we draw too much attention," he says.
Berosius |
I think we try to peacefully approach a mindshard and speak it reasonably. If that doesn't work, we Harrow the place until we find a way out. In the absence of Phoebee, Berosius can do the talking.
GM Engleaktig |
Cool.
As the party approaches, the various mindshards look like they're almost ready to come to blows! They contradict each other on basic facts. Some seem confused (the english term, not the magical condition), some seem overly confident in "truths" that are obviously wrong, etc.
Unfortunately, when you get close, as one, they all turn to the party: "YOU! This is all your fault! We were as one before you arrived!"
As they speak, arcane energies seem to crackle all around this pocket realm.
Harrow Tatterhood |
Harrow looks like he is about to respond, but knows the Brown Note likely won't work on this creature.
He looks at his best friend, hoping he will have something good to say.
Berosius |
Cast Tap Inner Beauty.
"We have come to try to help," begins Berosius, his voice reasonable, his hands empty of weapons.
"We are here because of your distress. We are not the cause of it. If you let us look around in peace, I promise we will discover the cause of your unhappiness. We're very good at it. Why not let us help you?"

"Err, yes, what the halfling said. Yes, we are here to discover the problem," says Mareq, haltingly. The odd display of the mindshards has temporarily thickened his tongue for some reason, though he still comes across as persuasive, more-or-less.
GM Engleaktig |
The party remains calm in the face of the agitated mindshards. Berosius makes a sincere plea for calm. Mareq hesitates, but manages a winsome smile nonetheless. Harrow stands at the ready with his Brown Note. Lem looks around, "You got this!"
The mindshards seem placated; they don't attack the party. But they're still out of sorts about something. They also seem more nonsensical than before.
With Mareq and Lem aiding, Berosius got a 41. So, just for fun...
One of the mindshards breaks down in tears, hugs Berosius, and starts unloading his emotional burdens like he was confessing to Oprah.
:-)
After a few minutes, you manage to disentangle yourselves from the distraught mindshard and wander further.
The mist lifts, revealing the twisted heart of the realm. A stone pillar stands on an island to the west, the runes upon it aligned and glowing fiercely. A mutated humanoid with reddish hide leans against the pillar, his hands melted onto his face.
Pausing here. More soon!

I'm waiting for Berosius to start pulling out magic wands and saying, "You get a magic wand. And YOU get a magic wand! And YOU get a magic wand!"
Harrow Tatterhood |
Harrow relaxes as Berosius does his thing.
Sometimes Harrow think Brown Note not best way--but sometimes think it is best way.
"Can Harrow get magic wand?" he asks, suddenly wanting to use magic himself.
Berosius |
Berosius awkwardly hugs the mindshard, patting it on the back. "Uh, there, there."
Berosius has wands, but doesn't usually use them because of his Curse. It's a standard action for him to draw a wand (or anything else).

I can't dispel or counteract confusion per se, but per the class' Summon Monster ability any additional uses of the ability immediately end any existing summons. So... I just summon something and the confused lion disappears.
Mareq Bolthune |
Mareq watches as the lion begins to mewl...
He's no use to me like that... perhaps the guardians of Moloch's Gate could be of use here.
The ifrit concentrates on the planar fabric near the weird void thing. The lion vanishes like a brimstone cloud, replaced by a shimmering tear in the walls between Golarion and Hell. On the far side of the rent can be seen fires and pits of lava, a terrible landscape of suffering and misery. Through the doorway leap 1d3 ⇒ 2 dog-like creatures (Cerberi).
