"I think the departed deserve a proper burial, so that their spirits can rest in peace."

Season of Ghosts

After a bit of discussion, you decide that it might be best to bury the bones of the fallen hags in the hopes that it will put their spirits to rest for good. The group sets about digging four graves, the task made a bit easier than normal due to the softness of the ground within the mire.

Feather Seed watches the proceedings with some curiosity and even attempts to help, using her mallet as an improvised shovel. Everyone works in silence for some time when the leshy suddenly slaps her forehead and whistles to get everyone's attention.

"నేను ఇంతకు పూర్వం చేయాలని మర్చిపోయాను, కాని...బాగా, నేను మీ కోసం బహుమతులను పొందాను!" she blurts out. She reaches down and carefully removes several feathers from the necklace hanging around her neck and offers each of you one. "అదృష్టం కోసం! ఈకలు మంచి అదృష్టాన్ని తెస్తాయి మరియు మీరు కనీసం ఆశించేటప్పుడు మంచి అదృష్టాన్ని పొందవచ్చు," she explains. After handing each of you a feather, she also reaches into a small pouch and pulls out a small carved pumpkin.

"మీరు ఆ చెడు విషయాలు లేవదీయడం వల్ల వారు సులభంగా విశ్రాంతి తీసుకోలేరని చెప్పారా? ఉమ్...ఇది చాలా కాదు, కానీ ఈ వారు అదనపు తిరిగి సహాయం చేస్తుంది వారు తిరిగి వచ్చి లేదు ఖచ్చితంగా?" Feather Seed says, holding it up for one of you to take.

Spellcraft (DC 20):

This is a Lesser Glowing Gourd. It has similar properties to a Glowing Gourd except that instead of Hallow, smashing it will Consecrate the ground in a 20-foot radius for 10 hours.

Druidic/Sylvan:

"I forgot to do this earlier, but...well, I've got presents for you!"

"For good luck! Feathers bring good luck and good luck can come in handy when you least expect it."

"You said those bad things got up because they couldn't rest easy? Um...it's not much, but maybe this will help make *extra* sure they don't come back again?"

Druidic/Sylvan:

"Oh! Well, if you smoosh it on the ground then it'll help make you braver for a short time. And it'll also uh...what's the word? It'll make a small patch of the ground holy, at least for a little while. At least, that's what Elm told me. I think holy is a good thing though, from the way he talked."

"Oh. Well, we could use that," Quentin says. "However, I'm a bit short on actual shovels. Should we go back to town and retrieve some?"

Season of Ghosts

After realizing that the digging might be made easier with the help of some proper equipment and that Feather Seed's gift may be the last piece needed to ensure that the Gyronna hags will not trouble Rosehaven again, the group agrees that returning to town is the best option for now. Before going, the group spends several minutes carefully investigating the rest of the area to make sure nothing else is missed. Inside of the burned-out building that was once the Gyronnan's hideout the group discovers a small steel box that had likely been hidden underneath the floorboards before fire claimed the building. With all of you working together, you determine the items within to be magical and identifies them as a Bottled Scream, a Wand of Burning Hands (CL 5th, 6 charges), and a Potion of Fly.

Once you are convinced that the ruins and surrounding area have been searched thoroughly, you turn and begin the trek back to Rosehaven. After a bit of hesitation Feather Seed takes up her mallet and follows you, weaving around and through the group as you walk, always mindful to stay within the light. Though the night is still dark, the air feels less oppressive and you even begin to hear the sounds of chirping crickets and the occasional hoot of an owl as you retrace your steps back along the river, through the pumpkin patch, and back to Bertinard's home. You see that there are no lights burning within and after a quick check, determine that the old priest seems to have kept his word on returning to the village. Eager to speak with him and share all that you have encountered in the hour or two since you last spoke, the group quickens their pace as they hurry the rest of the way back to Rosehaven.
_______

Arriving back in town, you can see that the festival festivities seem to have concluded for the evening and that the village square is largely empty. A quick inquiry with one of the constable's men informs you that both Bertinard and Constable Tivareau, along with a couple of her deputies, are currently within the Temple of Shelyn on the far side of the square. Hurrying forward, Quentin is the first to reach the temple and knocks softly on the door while stating his identity. The door opens and you see Constable Tivareau regarding you with an anxious expression, while Bertinard peers peevishly over her shoulder. At the sight of the group both of them immediately relax. "You see, Elise? I told you they'd make it back in one piece," Bertinard snorts. Constable Tivareau throws up her arms. "Well I'm sorry but can you blame me for being a little concerned after what we've seen tonight!?" Clearly, the short time spent confined in the temple as well as the general stress of the day has worn on both lawwoman and priest's nerves a bit.

"At any rate, we're both glad to see you folks back here safe and sound...well, mostly," Bertinard continues, noting that a few of you have acquired some additional scrapes, burns, and singes in your clothing since he saw you last. "What happened out there? Did you find the ruins?"

"We do need some shovels to properly bury the dead so that they stay at peace," Quentin corrects. "Then we need to consecrate the burnt ruins."

Season of Ghosts

"The bones had animated? Gods...even worse than I had thought," Bertinard sighs, shaking his head. "At least they didn't decide to come calling on Rosehaven or myself like those pumpkin-creatures did."

He looks at each of you, voice trembling with emotion. "Thank you, all of you, for helping put to rest these old ghosts of Rosehaven's past. As for the bones...yes, yes of course. We'll have a small ceremony and then inter them in the earth." He chuckles weakly, wiping his hand across his eyes. "I'm such a fool. If only I'd found it in my heart to forgive those women all those years ago, none of this would have happened. Elm would still be here with us now..."

"No Bertinard, no," Constable Tivareau quickly cuts in, shaking the old man slightly by the shoulder. "Those women, well...they caused a lot of strife and even some deaths with their wiles, from what you told me. And you are, and were, only human! I can't blame you and the others for just leaving the whole site a pile of embers. It just sounds like the whole thing turned out to be, well, the perfect storm...how could you have had any idea that it could cause trouble years later? It's not your fault!"

Bertinard looks Constable Tivareau and then around at the rest of, slowly taking in your nods and own words of agreement. For a moment he looks as if he might cry and then he quickly glances away towards one of the windows and harumphs once or twice.

"Well...glad to know you all think I'm all right after all," he finally responds, gruffly. Then with a start, he looks down to see Feather Seed hugging encouragingly at his leg and lets out a startled yelp that can be heard from outside the temple.

"What in blazes-!?"
_______

After making your report to Constable Tivareau and Bertinard, the remaining details - thankfully - fall right into place. A town meeting is called, wherein Bertinard finally lays bare the sordid details behind the founding of the Mercylight Festival and shares the story of the group of strangers who braved terrors in the dark for a town and a people they'd only just met. By the time the meeting is done it seems as if the entire village of Rosehaven is lining up to shake your hands and offer their thanks to the group. Just when you finally think that perhaps you've spoken to everyone, a familiar blonde-haired, half-elven woman shuffles her way over to the group.

"Um...I know that we didn't exactly get off to the best start earlier," Armeline says, "but it sounds like I owe you folks an apology. Rosehaven's been my home for years now and you all risked your necks for her when you could've just turned and headed back downriver after I told you all to shove off. So...thank you."

As Armeline shifts awkwardly from foot to foot, you realize that you've still got one more thing to take care of and that now might be your best shot at convincing the former Pathfinder agent to return to the fold. But will she listen?
_______

Please give me some Diplomacy checks to see if you can talk Armeline into returning to the Pathfinder Society - you'll get a hefty bonus for having ended the Gyronna threat and saved Bertinard as well :)

Xiao smiles sympathetically at Armeline's words. "I think now I and my companions understand your earlier anger even better - Rosehaven took you in after you'd been betrayed by the ones you trusted most, yes? And with the timing of Elm's murder and our arrival...I can see why you would have been suspicious of us."

"But even after all of that, you were still willing to listen even though a part of you didn't want to - and you're listening now, just like you promised you would. After all this time, you still found it in you to keep an open mind and an open heart. I think that's why Venture-Captain Petulengro asked us to come find you. The Pathfinder Society needs more good agents like you - and I know that the Venture-Captain would not have asked us to come to you if she were not prepared to make good on her own promises to ensure that what happened to you does not happen to other agents. Will you come back to Woodsedge with us and speak with her?"

_______

Normally I try not to bot people during what could be 'spotlight' moments but in the interests of having everything done before people scatter for the Christmas holiday, I decided to make an exception as it's been nearly 24 hours since my last post.

Season of Ghosts

Armeline gazes around at all of you for a long moment before she finally sighs and chuckles slightly. "Heh. I know when I'm beaten. Very well Pathfinders, I'll return with you and speak to this Eliza Petulengro. Maybe my experience can at least serve some purpose after all these years. You'll have to tell me more about her, but that can wait until later - there's a festival to finish and drinks to be had," she says, a small smile finally beginning to shine through her reserved demeanor.
_______

The rest of the group's stay in Rosehaven is blessedly much like the first few hours after their arrival had been, with the festival continuing on for another two days and in a mostly upbeat manner in spite of Elm's death. Much eating, drinking, and merrymaking is had and at the end of the Mercylight festival a special ceremony of forgiveness is held in the local cemetery, a place of quiet among flowers that have been carefully tended to by Bertinard. The bones of the Gyronna hags are laid to rest and the ground consecrated as Feather Seed smashes the odd-looking gourd into the earth around the gravesite.

"As this year's Mercylight Festival comes to a close, we must remember that perhaps more than to our friends and loved ones, we should offer our forgiveness to those who have wronged us - no matter how grievous that wrong may have been," Bertinard offers quietly, his voice subdued. "For if we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man or woman's life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility. And even should our enemies not offer their mercy to us, it is said that forgiveness is the scent that the flower leaves on the heel that crushes it."

As the morning sun shines softly down, the villagers then turn to one another and offer each other, and themselves, forgiveness for old and new wrongs through hushed whispers, laughter, and warm tears. The flowers in the cemetery bob gently in the cool breeze, a reassurance that everything will, at long last, be well again in the village of Rosehaven.

The End.
