"We shall too be heading to bed for the night. I bid you good night," says Phangun. The travelors make their camp. They too post a watch and shortly thereafter the jungle is quiet of conversation.

First: Patros
Second: Ben
Third: Unknown, Jeskit
Kioshi: 1d3 ⇒ 1

Perception (DC 18):
B, U, J: you [will] wake up to the sounds of combat. P & K: shortly before midnight a number of folks are approaching through the jungle.

Andor tries to bluff the men with these two information a) where is the relic and b) no bandits are in this area -> goal is to sense motive which information is the most interesting for him: a) the relic as they want to steal it or b) that there are no bandits here which should lead to relief.

@GM: I think we skipped my little test above. Would be great if we could get an impression as this will also dictate my actions towards the other group.

If the dialogue with the other group as indicated above was not possible anymore and we are in the scene you describe with people approaching, Then please note that Kioshi would have cast the 0-level spell message on himself and Patros before the watch so they could communicate without making sounds.

That's a good point! I can always act in the surprise round (since I have the foresight ability). Would it be reasonable for me to therefore be awake, either in the surprise round (per foresight ability, in my profile) or at the top of the first round?

Battle begins in earnest as the whole campsite is awakened. One bandit slashes at Patros and another at Kioshi. Phangun and his merchants seem very well prepared considering half their team was alseep. The are soon pulled into individual battles as the bandits gang up and force them away from each other.

hmmm.... lost a post. I thought about foresight, but decided sleeping (helpless) would trump the ability. However I think it perfectly fine to have you awaken to the shouts of your comrades during your place initiative (in surprise round) even though they do not begin shouting until theirs (in round one). :) also one of the Jacob's had a similar question here. So you have a full action for R1 (see below) and for R2.
Jeskit: Unless you were sleeping with your scroll in one hand and your staff in the other, it will take a move action to get each. It will also take a move action to stand up from prone.

Unknown awakes from his slumber with a jerky start: someone was shouting! Yet, all seems quiet, until: Aaah, there we go! Heh, the trouble with sleep is that the prophecies, the flights of fancy, and the hallucinations all blend together.

Hearing the sounds of battle, Unknown rolls over, fishes in his pack for his wand of Mage Armor, and taps himself with it. He then tries to lie still, to avoid undue attention.

Round 2

Keeping an eye on the scepter to make sure it had the bandits' interested, Ben instead moved to close the gap between him and the bandits attacking Phalgun and his merchants party, his greater priority being their safety. They seemed intent on defending themselves from attack. "I'm afraid theft will not afford you any manners!"

Who is wounded? Jeskit has a wand of Infernal Healing.

Core Helms ! Wizards Wanted Gameday X

With no chase provided, the camp tends to their wounded. Phalgun and his men quickly see to their fallen, and fortunately neither is dead. They offer their skills to the party, but they have no magic. They are very grateful for any help offered. "We are too torn up to put in pursuit," Phalgun says and makes plans to complete their journey as soon as morning arrives.

Some of the bandits are not dead yet, but there are several who are. They have no magic on them but each carries a handaxe, leather armor, and a composite shortbow with 20 arrows.

What would you like to do before tracking the bandits? How long do you want to wait before you do? VC recommended giving them a few hours. I will proceed as soon as you are ready. :)

We should give it a few hours, give them time to get the scepter to our target. Jeskit settles in for a rest and helps bind the living bandits.

Aye...tie up these captured ones. We can turn them over to the authorities when we're done. They can face their punishment then.

@GM: do we get enough sleep for memorization? Or do we have to keep our old spells?

Core Helms ! Wizards Wanted Gameday X

Your choice. Considering how many wizards we have the next morning post study is probably the case?

The night passes without any further violence. The pathfinders are able to look at the Wayfinder and watch the progress of the scepter. at each watch the device can be checked and the progress watched throughout the night.

Phalgun and his merchants head south after only a brief breakfast.

Tracking the bandits proves impossible. Not only do they disappear without so much as a bent blade of grass, but their approach is just as invisible. Indeed even looking at the site of the battle is appears that the party tramped and stomped about the clearing on their own.

Survival (tracking):
They literally leave no trace, some might say... try spellcraft?

Convincing a capture bandit to give up the location of their hideout isn't difficult. They have already been beaten and in many cases would be dead if not for their now captures. Improve their attitude to 'friendly' through Diplomacy, Intimidate or coin.*

However, Mahir's plan has worked perfectly and it is not necessary. without indication of any other course of action, I will keep us moving with the Zahir's plan. If you want to try something else please say so. :)

Following the Scepter:
The path winds for a while, taking dips into many dales to avoid sight, through creeks to avoid scent, and rambling indirection to avoid triangulation. Jungle sounds like those from the first day of the trek keep the party company. Cries of macaws, screeching of a Jalmeray white-face monkey, even the musical droning of fist-sized bees as they direct their hive to an exciting new food source. Eventually the path turns south in what appears for one last time. Bushes and debris litter the nearby hillside with the remains of the outer walls of an ancient stone structure visible above the foliage and reaching a height of about fifteen feet. The shattered stone remains of a taller building are visible inside the walls. It is still some distance away, the party can safely discuss what the next action shall be.

*bandit's directions:
The trail sticks to the tops of hills where the vegetation is thinnest, and views extend for miles. It passes along the shores of a small lake, which set the local otter population chittering to protect their territory. Eventually, at the top of a hill looking north they destination can be seen. Bushes and debris litter the nearby hillside with the remains of the outer walls of an ancient stone structure visible above the foliage and reaching a height of about fifteen feet. The shattered stone remains of a taller building are visible inside the walls.

player creativity:
I love it when players come up with something new, however I do not have an immediate response so will have to wait and see what you come up with :)

Kioshi then casts detect magic and looks at the tracks again.

He then starts talking to the bandits "You stole a very important item! We are not from here and have different customs than you might have so you will not die if you are cooperative and tell us about the one who hired you to steal from us."

"Authorities? they scoff. Here? In the jungle?" They are not moved by your mercy or your offers. They are helpless and unarmed and expect to be treated as such. This is the code of bandits, where there is no law each person must be his own. "We are the authorities here," they seem to say.

Kioshi finds no magic about, beyond what the party has brought with them. However there is a divine spell, unique to rangers and druids, which would allow for such a thing, pass without trace. An hour or so after following the scepter, signs of passage become easier. As the spell has worn off as they were returning. I will let you make your own inferences on what useful information that provides.

from the scepter spoiler above.

There are guards on the walls. I cannae get the map to load correctly. I will try and sketch something out quickly.

If you can incapacitate a few, we can try to rush the rest. We need to get close enough to scale the walls if we can. I can't see what retinue guard the towers quite yet, we need to get closer.

Ah, yes. A good idea Kioshi. I admit I am more one for trade than subterfuge, but if we can isolate a guard without resorting to force, I have magics that might help persuade him of our friendly intentions...
