Naurin Ferrick Phren |
"I ... heard some disconcerting whispering, too," Naurin looks around, embarrassed and lacking confidence. But, she thinks, "That does sound more like Malfeas' style - 'in your face'..."
She scrutinizes Malfeas and her other comrades cautiously (though reading people was always just about what she worst at).
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
And it still is.
Edit: "You have a good notion, Johann..." "Leave it to the gnome to think of the tricky answer!" Naurin thinks, before reproaching herself for the uncharitable comment and stereotype.
"The whispering of demons, trying to set us against each other, perhaps?"

Sorry "gals"!
Naurin and Dimitra feel a deep anger welling up directed at the other party members. Sir Ilivan curls up in the fetal position on the ground.
Soon after, Dimitra begins to gnash her teeth and growl at the rest of the team. It looks as though she might leap at someone at any moment!
You each have one round's worth of actions to intervene!
Naurin Ferrick Phren |
I have +8 vs. Charms and Compulsions... No? Dang.
Now see what you have done, Wuliem?! :-P
GM Derek W |
AH, it IS a compulsion affect. Still a DC 18, so even the exrta +6 doesn't put you over the top. And with Dimitra failing, things could get interesting for a minute...
Johann Erlenmeyer |
"Does anyone have a way to ward their minds? Someone must be causing them to react this way!"
Johann pulls his pony about and mentally searches through his extracts and potions, trying to remember what he has that might help. Can't think of anything... Sorry.
Naurin Ferrick Phren |
At least it isn't Malfeas, Johann, Walter... Naurin, fortunately, lacks combat effectiveness.
Malfeas Rayne |
When Dimitra goes feral, Malfeas groans, thinking the bards mental defenses were stronger than that. ”Well, they say to always put a rabid animal down, so… and in a flash, Malfeas sends two arrows into the unexpecting bard, dropping her like a sack of potatoes.

Walter Vizard |
Walter looks in shock at Malfeas, as he spits the Bard!
He rushes over to her, attempting to place the manacles onto her wrists.

Walter also wonders if Malfeas has been compelled to do it.

Dimitra |
Lol! Thank you Malfeas. Although Dimitra will probably have something to say about that after she heals.
I am happy to introduce your friends to Uncle Guaril. One hand washes the other right?"
Malfeas Rayne |
Malfeas doesn’t seem to be under any compulsion, nor does he seem concerned over the condition of Dimitra. Taking a bit of creative license GM :D
When Walter manacles Dimitra, he notices that she isn’t bleeding anywhere, and groans slightly as the inquisitor manipulates her arms.
Malfeas Rayne |
"I don't know what you mean? I must have grabbed the wrong arrows or something." responds Malfeas as deadpan as he can muster. That is clearly a lie ;)
He then adds, ”Can we collect the weakminded and get moving? The longer we stay here, the stronger the effect it seems.”
Naurin Ferrick Phren |
Like I said, it was a good thing Malfeas didn't go crazy... Or did he?
GM Derek W |
A few moments after Mal's arrows knock Dimitra senseless Naurin returns to her senses and Sir Illivan becomes alert. He straightens himself and shakily tries to mount his mare, slipping in his stirrup on the first try and nearly falling back on the ground. He waves off Gunther and any any others who attempt to help him, incoherently mumbling that he is fine.
Malfeas Rayne |
When it looks like the others have settled down and returned to their senses, Malfeas produces his curative wand to one of the many who could use it, ”I believe the activation phrase is Iwan T’hew Taget Tup if you’d like to revive feisty pants over here.”
Rolling for ease

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
so 2 charges look good… Why can’t I roll that on damage ;_;
Dimitra |
Dimitra regains her consciousness, only to notice that she can't move her hands. She glares at Malfeas and growls "So not only do you speak ill of me, you also decide to shoot me! What are you?! Are you all working for that bastard Torch? Or are you in league with the demons?"
She tries to wriggle free from her manacles while shouting at the rest of the group, but does not succeed right away.
Escape Artist: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Malfeas Rayne |
Malfeas chuckles over the outburst, ”No, I don't work for Torch, I don’t work for anyone but myself, and currently the Pathfinder Society pays well. You were, and still possibly are, under the effects of some demonic mind screw, so I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt here, and understand you aren’t thinking straight.” crouching low so that he can look up into Dimitra’s eyes, a very serious and stoic expression on his face”And if I wanted you dead, you know me well enough to know that you would not have awoke just now. Now stop fidgeting with these manacles, or next time I might grab the wrong arrows when I end your tantrum.”
Naurin Ferrick Phren |
Naurin slowly shakes her head, trying to clear it. "Ugh, my head. I don't know which is worse, the whispering I heard before or Malfeas' voice now."
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
I couldn't get 25, but maybe a Nat 20 would have got me something.
"Just guessing, but Sir Ilivan doesn't seem so good, either, judging by his faltering."
Walter Vizard |
Walter--sternly--eyes his companions.
He seems to especially glaring at Dimitra and Malfeas.
When you folks are done, perhaps we can continue this foolishness?
And please Dimitra, do not scratch my manacles.
GM Derek W |
Everyone returns to their senses, and Walter is able to remove the manacles from Dimitra's wrists. The group continues to follow the demons' trail, Walter and Gunther in the lead. Sir Ilivan follows some distance behind, obviously deep in thought.
After a few miles you reach a dry, narrow gulch that follows a dried-up creek bed appears to have been the site of numerous battles. Rusted weapons, broken arrows, and the occasional skull are strewn about the landscape. The walls of the gulch narrow, creating a natural choke point.
In the distance you see a group of figures. As you close to about 80 feet you can make them out. There are 8 captured crusaders and three demons. Two dretches and a fiery brimorak! The demons immediately take aggressive action!
Sorry Mal, no way to get your 300' shot in as written.

Map is on google docs and should be fully editable. Gunther, Walter, Mal and Dimitra are up! The guards are tied up and effectively helpless. The back dretch looks as though he will menace the prisoners and not the party first.

Upon viewing the foul demons, Walter prays to Abadar for protection.
School abjuration; Level cleric/oracle 1, inquisitor 1; Domain agathion 1, glory 1
CASTING
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (parchment with a holy text written on it)
EFFECT
Range touch
Target creature touched
Duration 1 min./level
Saving Throw Will negates (harmless); Spell Resistance yes (harmless)
DESCRIPTION
This spell creates a shimmering, magical field around the target that averts and deflects attacks. The spell grants the subject a +2 deflection bonus to AC, with an additional +1 to the bonus for every six levels you have (maximum +5 deflection bonus at 18th level).
As a swift action, he also pronounces judgment!
Walter then moves forward 30', drawing his cold iron falchion!
Malfeas Rayne |
Grumbling over the vision and how close they have to get to determine the nature of the "group of figures", Malfeas waits to see what Dimitra does before he sends two cold iron arrows at the flat footed Brimorak.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 171d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Attack 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 231d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
More if Dimitra sings :D
GM Derek W |
Mal, are you saying that you would delay until Dimitra acts? I'm treating it that way, otherwise I have to take your action first since you beat her initiative.
Gunther closes in, but his shot is hurried and results in a miss. Walter casts his spell, pronounces his judgement, and gets closer as well.
Dimitra begins a bardic performance.
Mal's first arrow *just* buries itself in the demon's hide. The second follows close behind, and the creature howls in rage!
The demon chants and suddenly its sword is alight with flame! (free action guys) Then it chants some more and both Walter and Gunther feel their armor growing quite warm!
Will saves from Gunther and Walter, please.
School transmutation [fire]; Level druid 2
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, DF
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target metal equipment of one creature per two levels, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart; or 25 lbs. of metal/level, all of which must be within a 30-ft. circle
Duration 7 rounds
Saving Throw Will negates (object); Spell Resistance yes (object)
Heat metal causes metal objects to become red-hot. Unattended, nonmagical metal gets no saving throw. Magical metal is allowed a saving throw against the spell. An item in a creature's possession uses the creature's saving throw bonus unless its own is higher.
A creature takes fire damage if its equipment is heated. It takes full damage if its armor, shield, or weapon is affected. The creature takes minimum damage (1 point or 2 points; see the table) if it's not wearing or wielding such an item.
On the first round of the spell, the metal becomes warm and uncomfortable to touch but deals no damage. The same effect also occurs on the last round of the spell's duration. During the second (and also the next-to-last) round, intense heat causes pain and damage. In the third, fourth, and fifth rounds, the metal is searing hot, and causes more damage, as shown on the table below.
Round Metal Temperature Damage
1 Warm None
2 Hot 1d4 points
3–5 Searing 2d4 points
6 Hot 1d4 points
7 Warm None
Any cold intense enough to damage the creature negates fire damage from the spell (and vice versa) on a point-for-point basis. If cast underwater, heat metal deals half damage and boils the surrounding water.
Heat metal counters and dispels chill metal.
Round 1:
Gunther
Walter
Dimitra
Malfeas
Brimorak (17 damage)
Johann <<
Naurin <<
Dretches
Mal, don't feel too bad. If you *had* taken a shot at 350' the dretches just would have started to CDG the prisoners that much sooner. Johann and Nauirn may go.
GM Derek W |
OOPS! I didn't read the range on that spell guys!
Walter and Gunther's armor feels fine, but instead they see a flame spout up in the brimorak's off hand.
Naurin Ferrick Phren |
I don't seem to be able to move my character, either.
Naurin moves forward and towards the center of the group - out of Malfeas' line of fire because, well, you know - and causes her wand of bless to spring into her hand, waving it and causing it to Bless the group.
Please move Naurin 5' west diagonally and then 10' more.
+1 to attacks, which stacks with Inspire Courage, and +1 vs. fear, which doesn't so stack.
Johann Erlenmeyer |
Johann urges his pony forward, stopping between Walter and Gunther to toss a bottle of holy water at the nearest dretch.
"Kill the weak ones first! We must save the captives!"
ranged touch attack, 3rd range interval, bless and inspire: 1d20 + 6 - 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 6 - 4 + 1 + 1 = 18
damage if that hits with inspire: 2d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1, 3) + 4 + 1 = 9
GM Derek W |
Nope, I lied. The 18 hit their *normal* AC! But I did look at flat-footed late last night, so if I had initially ruled a miss, I would have fixed it. And welcome to Tier 3-4!
Naurin blesses the group and Walter lobs a flask of holy water, which badly burns the closer dretch!
The dretch near the back raises its weapon and slays the prisoner to the south if it!
The other dretch closes in on Gunther via a double move!
Round 2:
Gunther <<
Walter <<
Dimitra <<
Malfeas <<
Brimorak (17 damage)
Johann
Naurin
Dretch 1 (unharmed)
Dretch 2 (9 damage)
Gunther, Walter, Dimitra and Malfeas are up!
Malfeas Rayne |
Was it a CDG? Those are full round actions, and Malfeas would try and shoot the dretch to interrupt it.
Malfeas growls as the prisoners begin to fall, and lobs two cold iron arrows at the dretch that is slaying the prisoners. Not on my watch! Dead prisoners are bad for business.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 7 + 1 + 1 = 211d8 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 1 = 12
Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 1 + 1 = 201d8 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 = 9
GM Derek W |
It is a CDG. And how do you interrupt it? It's not a 1 round casting spell. For example, a full-attack is a full round action. You can't interrupt it out of initiative order with a ranged attack. It would provoke an AOO, but no one is threatening the dretch. If I am misunderstanding, please let me know! I really want you guys to save as many prisoners as possible! In any event, dretches are small creature but I'm going ot rul he gets no cover because helpless prisoners are likely to be collapsed on the ground..
Dimitra |
While singing Dimitra nudges her horse to move forward towards Walter and readies her wand of enlarge person. When she is in range she points the wand toward him and mumbles "palakihin" causing Walter to grow to double size!
Use Magic Device: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Malfeas Rayne |
Enlarge person is a full round cast, so unless Walter doesn't move, it would fizzle when he runs away from it. Just a heads up, since I've seen that happen in a lot of games recently.
Dimitra |
Thanks, I always thought casting from a wand was a standard action, appears I was wrong. Walter, you stay put for now ;-)
Luckily the spell has a range of 25 ft and the target is designated when the spell comes into effect. An actual fizzle is therefore not possible, but still something to keep in mind.
Walter Vizard |
Spells cast from a wand are standard actions.
Walter grins--wickedly--as he reaches his enlarged height!
He looks directly at the beast before him, swinging his cold-iron falchion with resolve!
favored enemy! Inspire courage, and bless...did i forget any...lol!
melee: 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 282d6 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5, 1) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 15
crit chance: 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 282d6 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 17
After making blood mist out of it, Walter moves ahead with his usual stern face aimed at the remaining enemy!
By Abadar's Scales, you filth will be obliterated!
knowledge planes: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Gunther Judsson |
Gunther will ignore the dretch closing on him, counting on Walter to deal with it, and fires a cold iron arrow at the dretch slaying the prisoners.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 + 1 = 9
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
