Can we have the doors be a bit more identifiable on the map please?
"I can do it about 5 times per day, but if the room on the other side is dark, I won't be able to see anything without a light. Also, there's some scaly humanoids wrapped up in webs in this room. I vote we clear out this area since I'd hate to leave a big spider at our backs as we continue exploring." replies Mez as he pears around trying to find the giant spider that has set up house in this room.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Moving into the room , up next to Mez, Ebon asks." Spiders? Big ones? Awesome."
With a large grin he hefts his Earthbreaker in anticipation of another chance to prove himself.

Last post til after the 6th, happy 4th of July everyone. Feel free to DMPC me as necessary.

![]() |

Have a happy 4th, Ebon. Once other people have had a chance to do what they want to do with the face:
Norine moves to reestablish the marching order, taking up position behind Ebon, but first casts Guidance on herself and takes a listen at the door on the left.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
"I forgot to bring a torch... Anyone want to ready one to help clear out webs?"
Once we are ready to move into the 'spider room', and assuming we have a few rounds, Norine will cast Virtue, Resistance, and Guidance on Ebon.

GM Derek W |

Norine casts her spells and the party advances slowly. As Mez steps forward, his light shines to the far wall of the room. The group, ever alert for danger moves with caution. And with good reason! As Mez and Ebon advance side by side they reach the center of the room. Ebon notices some movement in the far corner of the room.
"There's the beast! Get ready!"
A huge spider darts out from the corner of the room and prepares to attack Ebon.

Calanthe: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Ebon: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Dracothis: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Mez: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Norine: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Targost: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Spider: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
I have marked doors with yellow lines. Please note that the squares around the sides of this room, next to and in front of Ebon and Mez are full of thick webbing. You can strike the web or use a strength check to move through it at half speed.
Round One has begun! Let's see how posting in order goes this time. First up, Targost - then Dracothis, Mez, Ebon, Calanthe, the spider, and Norine.

![]() |

Derek, Can I choose to use my Eternal Hope ability and re-roll this 1?
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
That would make it Targost, Norine, Dracothis, Mez, Ebon, Calanthe, and then the spider.

![]() |

Norine takes a step forward and touches Ebon and says "May the luck of Desna and Gorum be with you!"
Luck domain power Bit of Luck.

![]() |

"I can't trip that!" Dracothis shouts, drawing his rapier and taking a step back.
Fight defensively (-4 attacks, +2 AC)

![]() |

"Ebon, let's circle it and strike in unison!" calls Mez as he takes a step forward, readying his rapier to strike. Ebon nods, flexing his muscles and calling out to his ancestors has he steps to the side before unleashing a mighty blow. Like hammer and anvil, Ebon tries to drive the beast down onto the upward thrust from Mez.
Ebons attack: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 4 + 1 + 2 = 192d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 3) + 4 = 13
Ebons luck roll: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 1 + 2 = 13
Mezs attack: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 2 = 161d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

GM Derek W |

Targost's missile strike the spider, causing it to screech in pain. Ebon and Mez circle the beast and strike as one. Ebon's blow crushes the spider's head, and the life flees from its body. Mez's strike pierces its side, causing its already lifeless carcass to bleed out.

![]() |

Norine: "!"
When able:
Norine also scans the room, looking for the positions of the scaly bodies - guessing kobolds (since they are small and scaly, and whom she would probably know as a gnome) - and any more large or small spiders.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

![]() |

Calanthe is so shocked by the appearance of the giant spider that she seems to be stuck in the one spot until the moment is over. She blinks and shakes her head, before joining Norine in investigating the creatures wrapped up in webs. She'll look at them closely, trying to determine if they still show signs of life (with deathwatch).

GM Derek W |

The bodies in the room are indeed kobolds. Though some have recently perished, they are all beyond your aid. No other living creatures are in the room.

![]() |

Norine really didn't do a search - but a quick spot to note any more spiders or spiderlings.
Norine whispers, "I suggest we backtrack to the door we passed. I didn't hear anything in my quick listen, but can't be sure. After the dungeon is cleared, we can cut these kobolds out of the webs to search them, and then clear away the rest with fire. But, since there are or were kobolds here, we must be vigilant about traps and ambushes."
"Perhaps, though, we should take some sort of vote as to whether we explore first more to the east or more to the west."

![]() |

"Poor things," Calanthe whispers, saying a silent prayer for their safe passage to the next life. She has a quick look around the webbing, trying to see if any of the kobolds' possessions (or the spiders' other victims) remained there too.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
With the talk of where to go next, Calanthe waits until everyone is quiet before piping up with: "Why don't we start with this door just here...?"
Referring to the one next to Targost.

![]() |

"Either door is fine with me." answers Mez, "Want me to peek through them and see what's there? Targost, if I motion with my hand, slip the lit end of the arrow through one of the cracks in the door." Assuming others agree to the plan, Mez places both hands on the door and focuses intently. In mere moments, to his eyes, the door doesn't exist, and he looks through into the next room. Should the other room be dark, he motions to Targost and continues looking.

![]() |

"Remarkable talent, Mez. Perhaps you could teach it to me sometime?" Dracothis says aloud, watching the proceedings.

![]() |

Mez smiles at Dracothis’ praise. Maintaining his focus, he responds, ”It’s a gift of Cayden Cailean given to a select few. You could bind your soul to him and hope it is part of the gifts he grants you. By the sound of it, Desna may also be able to grant the gift as well, for probably the same price, but if Norine did not know of this gift, it may be even rarer among the star’s children.”

GM Derek W |

Calanthe ntoices a small purse stuck in the thick webs. She retrieves it and takes a look inside.
Targost hand his arrows to Mez, who finds a small crack in the heavily worn door. As he slips the arrow through, Mez can see to the far end of the room, where he notices part of a scroll shelf in a small alcove. The shelf runs from floor to ceiling, and there are a number of scrolls lying on the floor - some damaged, some with the wax seals still intact.

![]() |

As the light radiates from Targost’s arrow head, Mez advises the group what he sees, including the lack of any inhabitants. ”Do you think those scrolls are the trade agreements our Qadirian friend was looking for?” he asks, closing his eyes and letting normal sight return to him.

![]() |

Calanthe has a close and curious look at the pearl as she waits for Mez to finish remote viewing the room.
Detect magic + Spellcraft to identify if it's magical: Spellcraft: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
If it's not, Appraise check: Appraise: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
"I found some coins in the webs," she says quietly, and distributes it evenly between the group (5 gp each). She also nods in agreement to check out the room with the scrolls.

![]() |

"Good eye, Calanthe - what did you find?"
"My head's too full for new talents," says Norine, making a face, then motioning to Mez's door, "Agreed. Same order going in?"

![]() |

Dracothis accepts the coinage and examines it for a moment, attempting to determine the origins of the coins.
Knowledge (history): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
If that doesn't do the trick...
Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Once satisfied (or failing to learn anything), he slides the coins into his belt pouch and turns his attention back to the door.
For Dracothis, adventuring is not about finding gold or magical items (though if we come across something he could use, he won't turn it down); it's about learning new things and recovering long-lost artifacts. Thus, his interest in the historical value of the coinage.

![]() |

"Thank you, Calanthe, but there is no need to distribute things like coins yet," says Norine. Noting Dracothis's interest, she shows her coins to him before putting them in her belt pouch. "Perhaps they can tell us whether the kobolds had been plundering the ruins or taking from the locals."

GM Derek W |

There is nothing especially noteworthy about the coins. They are all of a contemporary design, commonly found throughout Absalom and the Inner Sea region.
Calanthe gazes carefully at a pearl in her hand.
Mez tries the door, and though it is worn, it does not budge. He does not find a lock on the door.

![]() |

”Hmm, it’s stuck! Ebon, let’s both put our shoulders into it and see if we can’t remedy that.” says Mez, making space for the barbarian near the door. ”On the count of 3, we push.. ready.. 1..2..PUSH!”
With you GMNPCing Ebon, not sure how you want to handle this, but basically I’m trying for both of us to shoulder bash the door in unison.
Mez Str check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

GM Derek W |

The door bursts open and Mez and Ebon advance into the room. The party's light illuminates the area, revealing three alcoves filled with scroll shelves. To the right (East) Mez notices the opening to what appears to be a scribing room, complete with old tables, broken bottles, and the like. He peers only far enough to get a glance through the doorway, but sees nothing especially noteworthy.
The party files into the room behind, anxious to search the area.

![]() |

Dracothis moves immediately to the scrolls, examining them without touching to see if they are safe to handle.
Mostly, he is looking for signs of extreme age or mouldering, to determine if they might be damaged or crumble away at a touch.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
If they seem safe to touch, he will take one and look it over.
Linguistics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

"One moment - search with the Virtue, Resistance and Guidance of Desna," touching Ebon with three spells.
"Dracothis, if any are in Gnome or Sylvan, I can help with those, and can offer you divine Guidance if you wish it."
I am just assuming that it is OK to have a few rounds to cast spells before entering rooms, without slowing things down too much.
Norine then positions herself at the door to keep watch.

GM Derek W |

Dracothis looks closely at a number of the scrolls. He is able to identify about a dozen that look safe enough to touch. He opens one and sees flowing Kelish script inside. The exact nature and contents are unclear, but he is able to make out the signature of Satrap Taliq Asad.

![]() |

"It looks like this is what our 'friend' wants. Anyone have a scroll tube?"
Dracothis checks the shelves to see if perhaps a scroll tube remains behind.
"I can," he adds offhandedly, "Use a comprehend languages spell to make out the Kelish, if there is some concern over what we are giving him."

![]() |

"Lets wait to collect everything before you use a spell on it though. Would hate to have you use a spell now, only to have us find something else in the next room."
Looking around the room, Mez checks to make sure there is nothing else of interest before heading back out, "Well, looks like there's only one way to go from here."

![]() |

"I have a scroll tube, but yes let's wait until we have cleared the dungeon. That way we are not fighting with fragile documents, and we can be sure we have the time to do things carefully."
"When we are done, we can search every room more thoroughly, and I will take a rubbing of the Kelish engraving so that we may comprehend languages all at once."
"Well, Mez, either ahead from this room, or continuing our explorations east or west. I have no preference."

![]() |

Calanthe holds out the pearl to Norine. "This is a pearl of power... you can use it as a focus to recall a spell you've cast earlier in the day. Odd that a kobold should have it, though..."
Anyone in particular want the pearl of power?
As the others are investigating what looks to be the requested trade documents, Calanthe has a look inside the scribing room to the east. Assuming there's no danger popping out, she continues inside, looking for anything of particular note.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

![]() |

"I could use it, as I understand, but can you use it too, Calanthe?"
"Kobolds are capable of more than people give them credit, but it may have been stolen or scavenged."

GM Derek W |

As Calanthe enters the scribing room, she glances into the corner. Amid a particularly thick patch of fungus in the southeast sits a pale and crusty froglike humanoid. It trembles and twitches as it stands and lurches forward. His skin is patchy and dry, like a squid left out in the sun and sand. His bulbous eyes open, and light stabs
out from them.
Calanthe and Mez, please roll a Fortitude Save!

![]() |

Fort Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
What kind of Knowledge check would it be to identify the frog creature?

![]() |

Was that it’s surprise action, and we can full act, or should there be an initiative?
Fort save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
I have a feeling I did not pass. GG all :D

GM Derek W |

Yeah, the way it's written is a little unclear, but that should count essentially as its surprise action. Knowledge(nature) should get the job done, Calanthe, say a DC 15?
As the light stabs out from the creature's eye, Calanthe quickly snaps her eyes shut. Squinting hard, she re-opens them and sees the creature faintly behind the blinding light.
Mez was not so lucky. He was unable to avert his gaze quickly enough, and was blinded.
Sorry Mez, you are without vision for 1 hour

Mez feels the burning of his retina’s and howls in pain as the sight is driven out of him. ”My eyes, I... I cannot see! Cayden have mercy, I’m blind!”
Well that sucks. 1 hour... lame... good thing we don't have a time limit right... just don't let me become frog lunch guys, cuz I'm pretty much boned.

![]() |

Dracothis closes his eyes quickly on hearing Mez bemoan his fate. Without a good idea of where the creature is, he draws his rapier and listens intently to see if he can hear where the creature might be. Sorting out the sounds around him, he strikes with his rapier.
Rapier Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Unfortunately I don't have Knowledge (Nature), hope someone else has it! FYI Derek, there's actually a set DC for these things, as shown on the Knowledge skill: 10 + CR, with an extra bit of information for every 5 points above that.
Calanthe stumbles back a half-step as the frog-like creature fires off a blinding flash of light. She tries to shoot it with her crossbow, but still seeing stars, her attack is a total miss. Calanthe quickly reloads her crossbow, looking worriedly over at Mez.
Crossbow Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 Miss.
Also taking a 5-foot step directly to the left, and reloading my crossbow as a move action.
