Quick question: the scale indicator on the lower left corner of the map seems to indicate 1 square = 5 feet, but we're all sized such that it's 1 square = 10 feet...which is right?
Iskim rushes forward, drawing his greatsword and readying an attack against the bird.

Although the adventurers weren't able to affect it, as the bird lands on top on the bookcase, it falls apart into rotting pieces, as if eaten from within. Bit and chunks of putrid flesh drop into the water. The little worm, however, remains in motion, and curiously bites at Skarn

Combat over!
There's a brass scroll case, which has turned out to be waterproof, which holds several expensive scrolls: a scroll of magic circle against chaos and a scroll of slow.

Adrianna's keen eyes spot something shiny in the water - a brass case, with a couple of expensive looking scrolls in it! She hands them over to Bones in the hopes that maybe he can determine what they are...

DM Kludde |

The bird disintegrated after the first attack. In the high tier it would have been more of a threat.
Skarn and Bones inspect the wounds for diseases, but luckily, this worm did not seem to be the disease-carrying kind.
There's four exits on this level of the understacks: two door at the east, and two doors at the west.

![]() |

Skarn nods, content with the knowledge that he's safe - for now.
"Let's go to the east first." he suggests, wading through the water to access the northeastern door.
I suggest to explore those exits in a clockwise manner: NE, SE, SW, NW. Sounds good?

DM Kludde |

The door on the northeastern side is open, and water has flooded this room as well. The water’s surface is carpeted with maps made of silk, vellum, birch bark, and sundry other materials.
There's one curious item floating among the many maps: a silk map that portrays Tian Xia mashed into the side of Avistan to create a strange supercontinent. The item is magical, seems to be a scroll of some sort. (Read magic will tell you more.)

DM Kludde |

The map doubles as a scroll of dimension door
The room to the southeast contains mostly volumes of obscure and tedious genealogy.
There's another scroll fragment floating around, and it seems to be another fragment of the riddle. (You may remove the blue box below the previous two fragments to reveal the third part)
The northernmost alcove of this room is shrouded in a darkness spell, and contains a heavy codex bound with cured dwarf skin. Scarlet has no trouble reading the title "The Darklands Precepts" , though the book itself is shrouded in a permanent darkness spell.

Iskim notices the fragment as well, but continues making his way into the northernmost portion of the room, which is heavily shrouded in darkness. After a bit of fumbling around, he calls out that he has found something of interest. He wraps the object - a book - in his cloak and brings it back to the rest of the party.
He presents it to the others, and Scarlet is able to make out the title - "The Darklands Precepts". However, rather than continue to stumble around in the dark, Iskim places the book in his pack.

![]() |

"The map is also a scroll of a potent spell, a short-distance teleport one." declares Skarn.
Skarn whispers to Iskim.

DM Kludde |

Iskim stores the book in his pack. Moving on to the next door - the southwestern one - the pathfinder find it is still closed. Locked even. There is some hope that the room beyond is not flooded yet, though the water level on this side of the door will surely change that if the door is opened.

"That is a sound idea. We have to make sure we don't make things worse. Maybe there's a drain somewhere?"
Skarn looks around, trying to find a way to either evacuate the water on this side, or create a barrier of sorts.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 17

DM Kludde |

Scarlet disables the lock without any problem. Skarn looks around for a drain, but only sees row upon row of bookshelves with soggy, destroyed books in them.

![]() |

Iskim looks around. "We might be able to use the books; they're heavy, and if we stack them well, we may be able to create a serviceable dam." With the group's approval, he begins taking books from the lower shelves nearby and stacking them in a semicircle in front of the door. Once they are above the waterline, he begins scooping water out of the semicircle and confirms that the water does not flow back in.

![]() |

"Maybe if we stack up the books like bricks in a wall, it will at least slow the flood into the space? Then we can get in and close the door while we check it out..." Adrianna says, picking up several waterlogged tomes and beginning to stack them.

![]() |

Bones looks at the problem of building a dam out of soggy books and bookcases, but comments "If the map is a short range teleport why not use it to zap us to the other side of the door and not risk flooding the room?"
K(engineering): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

DM Kludde |

The party builds a dam, and it seems to hold - momentarily, at least.
The teleportation scroll contains a 'dimension door' spell, which allows the caster and one other creature to do a short range teleport.
Looks like you have plenty of options to enter that room

![]() |

"Using the scroll is a good idea, but it's one-way only and not everyone will be able to come." notices Skarn as he helps with the lugging of shelves and books to establish a dam. Then he uses whatever container he can find to move the water from the door-side of the day to the other side.
Does it make any sense?

DM Kludde |

After building a dam of soggy books, fortified with bookshelves, and clearing out the water behind it, the door is sad to open without flooding the room behind it.
The room turns out to be the dictionarium, which contains many books, with more language primers, linguistic treatises, and records of inscriptions than anything else.
One rather useful book is the 'traveler dictionary' for translating Sylvan into Common. With all the first world creatures dashing about, keeping hold of it wouldn't be a bad idea.
===
The last of the doors in the understacks is closed, but it's clear that - unlike the other one - this door was not effective at all in keeping the water out. A scroll fragment is pinned to the door with a dagger (see handout).

Perception (check the door fro traps) 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
The Scarlet repeats the water break technique and opens the door.

DM Kludde |

The party builds another makeshift dam, and removes the water between door and dam. As soon as they open the door, however, water sloshes in from the room behind the door.
A thin waterfall drops from a grate in the ceiling fifteen feet above, creating a curtain in the doorway to this flooded room. Beyond, mounted animal heads glower from virtually every inch of every wall. Stuffed specimens also lurk beneath the dark water, their antlers, horns, and claws breaking the surface here and there. In the eastern corner, a large gilded cage sits mostly submerged, its waters thick with embalmed birds bobbing at the surface.
There are no shelves here, but it's possible to climb the stuffed animals (DC 10 climb check)
There's a man, mostly toothless, trapped in the birdcage, partially submerged and surrounded by stuffed birds.
Standing on top of a stuffed gorgon's head is a pixie-like creature, with a mouth full of mismatched teeth. Two more fairy-like creatures are perched over the birdcage, doing something with huge pairs of pliers each are holding.
