Welcome all. I would like everyone to respond with this post and then respond to the next post. That way all of these things show up on the first page and will be easy for me to find.

Please take a look at the rules for Mass Combat. There are some other things I can show you and there are a few changes, but with PbP we have the time.

Then I need a handful of things from y'all.
Real Name (Paizo avatar is OK), PFS Number, Faction (which will show up if you have it set on your Avatar.)
Please put perception and AC plus anything else I might have to look up frequently into the sex/race slots of the character's profile (see Seaweed for an example). If you have a T-shirt or folio free reroll please say so and where you are most likely to use it (example: Reflex save when d20 is below 10). This is only because PbP means a lot of quiet time between a roll and a response compared to a table. I want to keep the game moving, but do not want to push through someone's choices.

In order to keep things moving I may occasionally take an action for your character. Define your characters default attack option. Then also make an attack of opportunity for me. I would rather not wait two days to complete an single action.

If you are OK with me making the Perception and initiative checks I will. If not, give me three of each & I will use them in the order you rolled them as needed.

This should be set up for a reply to make it easier for you (deleting everything above). Make sure to add the appropriate modifier and the final closed bracket (])

Has everyone had a chance to read the mass combat rules? I will post the 'player's handouts' 1-4 which summarizes them. I will post army stats soon and army's are picked after the engagement description is chosen.

I got the first two armies posted under the campaign info tag. I might try it as a google doc instead, so let me know if you have any opinions on legibility, accessibility, etc.

For those with unique army chronicles, do you have any of the boons crossed off?

I also put the map up, but neither the grid nor the standard locations came with it. It will take some time for me to get that updated.

Neither my GM or PC chronicles for 5-19 were on Taldor / Sovereign Court characters. I'm not sure if that affects the Horn of Aroden boon (if that even comes up here).

None of my boons are crossed off, aside from that note above.

Those mass combat rules are a huge read. I've browsed it through and have an understanding. I really hope Paizo stops pushing these special rules sets down our throats, they do not work well in a organized play environment. Same thing with mythic.

I'm curious about that too; if a team of PCs of whom no one has played any Season 5 scenarios prior to this one, are some forcefully left without an army? As far as I can see there's only 3 "always available" armies, and the rest are provided by chronicles.

Yes, each PC picks an army. Everyone has six choices (two Five Kings, two Mendevian, and two Pathfinders). Those with a chronicle get a few more choices. Taldor (Sovereign Court) faction gets one more choice.

If everyone wanted the Mendevian Warpriests, everyone can. Only the unique (chronicle) armies cannot be duplicated. There will be a brief intro to the first engagement, after which you can decide which army you would like to field.

I have posted the Player's Handouts on the maps page. They represent the shortest version of mass combat rules. Handout 3 has to do with special abilities, so you will only need to read those pertaining to a given army. I will try and clean them up (removing extra carriage returns, bolding headers, etc.) after all the armies are posted.

The warcouncil is the RP version of me (as GM) going over the mass combat rules. Do not get too worried about the confusion for now. In fact if you would like to ask your questions in character please do so. You can also talk with the commander of an army (I will have the NPC describe their tactics & advantages without mechanics).

That said, if anyone doesn't want to play with the mass combat rules, this is probably not the scenario to participate in. Say so now, & I will find something else to run for you (after this one is over :)

EDIT: The armies are now on the campaign info page. I noticed that boons from different season 5 scenarios offer 'special' advantages to the different armies. I guess more than the 5 do apply. :)

Is there a way to learn which armies have which special abilities? That might affect our tactics as PCs as to which armies to bring to the field under our collective command(s).

If I'm the only Sovereign Court / Taldor person here, I'll take that one if we like what it brings to the table.

This seems like a scenario where a) having more players = better since # PCs = # armies, and b) playing this PbP gives us more time to read and try to comprehend the mass combat rules rather than under a 4-5 hour time limit in a FLGS or a convention :)

This is the last post I'll probably be able to make until Monday, but suffice to say, I'm all-in, and excited!

Agreed PBP should allow everyone time to absorb the special rules.

If you look at the campaign info tab you will find the armies available for the scenario. One entry is Tactics and list the options a particular army has. The last entry in the listing is 'special' and list some other stuff. In most cases this is tied to the necessary chronicle. The Taldan (Army of Exploration) army has several boons you have hopefully earned in previous chronicles. For example if you (not your character) have a chronicle for the Hellknight's Feast, and you earned the By Glory Boon your Taldar army Morale modifier increases by 2, and its OM modifier increases by 1.

After studying the mass combat rules and looking at the available armies, I'll pick the Pathfinder Society Field Agents instead of the siege masters. Mainly because I find the field agents better, but also because I'm guessing the whole combat would become very boring for me with the dull dwarven army.

I'll post on the gameplay thread to adjust this.

Hmmm... sounds like every PFS combat I have seen. Barbarian is up; oh dragon dies. Actually it may take several rolls to kill an opposing army. The "AC" of an army might translate better to "DR" where in if you beat the target number, you subtract their DM from your damage amount. If you damage is 6 and their DM is 5, you are going to have to hit a lot.

Picking the actual armies for the first engagement, will happen after you have heard what the engagement is. I will post that tomorrow after I get to a real computer. :)

I have added the armies to the map. The starting place for the Army of the open road is marked AOR. The city is being held a Garrison (T), and cultist (C) armies roam around the arena. There will be some adjustment once I know which armies are chosen.

The hexes are difficult to maneuver so I just put up a handful( they are probably too large). When we begin combat, please use them as a ruler for how far you can move by lining up the right number of them with your speed. For example the first one will be placed where you are (ARG) if you have a speed of 3, line three additional hexes up. If they reach an enemy army movement phase ends and it moves tactics/melee.

It's not technically one piece, but it's grouped together so it should move together. Layer-wise, I put it just above the map image so you should be able to change anything else at will.

The mass combat section talks about advantageous terrains. Are these going to be represented on the map, or disregarded to simplify things?
