L'Mont moves - carefully, quietly, slowly - into the hallway, and looks into the first smashed doorways on either side.
"Stay at the back," wasn't that what the Old Bastard always told us? "Stay at the back, behind a big wall of meat. Let everyone else go first, then you clean up the mess and pick up the goodies." Fine for him to say, but some of us, our talents mean we gotta do things differently.
It would be nice not to get punctured so quick, though. Dang, but that bear had bite.
Position updated on map. Depending on what he sees from the doorways, he will probably move down the hallway, stopping for initial scans from each doorway for threats until he gets to the first of the two bigger rooms at the end. If there are no visible threats, then he would go back up the hall and the party can search the rooms before moving into the two big ones.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

The wayang moves gingerly down the passage, stopping at the first two ruined doorways. The general state of ruin of most of the areas make discerning the original purpose of the rooms difficult, but the smaller rooms appear to have once been small bedrooms. The larger room appears to have been a place where food was prepared, but nothing remains intact of the structures within, perhaps belying the bear's desperate search for food spurred by residual smells.
Nothing stirs in the dark structure. The remainder of the party huddles in the ruined dining room, peering timidly down the hall at the rogue.

Glastor moves up, humming quietly to himself, keeping an eye on L'Mont. Fear is not an emotion most gnomes pay a lot of attention to, until it is the proper time. He checks out each room as he walks past, noting hte art work and everything else, shaking his head a the ruins caused by the bear.

"Nothing yet." L'Mont whispers, trusting that Luwei is listening and will report to the others.
He stops at the next smashed doorway and does another quick scan.
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Assuming he sees nothing of immediate interest or danger from the doorway:
L'Mont moves to the closed door, listens, scans it for traps, and - if he notices nothing - attempts to open it.
Perception - listen: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Perception - traps: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30
(If he hears anything behind the door, or notices a trap, please disregard the rest of this post.)
If the door opens to the same large room as the previous doorway on this side of the hall (as it appears on the map), L'Mont does another quick scan of the room beyond the door:
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
If there is nothing obviously interesting or dangerous there, he will move next to doorway to the first room at the end of the hall.
To Luwei, he whispers, "You guys could toss the rooms behind me, see if I missed anything from the doorway. Just be quiet about it."

"L'mont says the rooms ahead are clear. We can take a closer look for any hidden treasures, though."
Luwei moves forward, keeping a safe distance between her and the wayang, picking carefully through the rooms.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 5

Might be better to pick one main searcher and others use aid another.

"Hm. Makes me nervous to split up like this."
Mongo will move into the first bedroom and try to look around more thoroughly.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Bolty grins "Seems empty enough in here."
Bolty turns his eyes from the inside to the outside, looking back out the door they came in for anything else lurking around the grounds.

Ushi mills about outside in the courtyard, hesitant to enter. The party moves forward without him.
...He check out the rooms as he walks past, noting the art work and everything else...
There is little remaining of humanity in these rooms, and certainly no art. The bear's residential stay was brutal on furnishings, interior walls, and especially, it would seem, doors. L'Mont moves up to the only intact door noted to date.
Opening the door gently, L'Mont peers inside, confirming the second door leading onto the room-formerly-known-as-the-kitchen. The rest of the band apart from the nagaji sorts through the rubble and ruin, finding little of interest.

![]() |

L'Mont moves carefully up the hallway, looking into the smashed doorways of the last bedroom and the storeroom (?), before stopping at the equally smashed doorway into the big room with the carpet and statue.
L'Mont updates Luwei. "Checking out the room at the end now."
Perception - last bedroom: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Perception - storeroom (?): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Perception - big room: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23

![]() |

L'Mont opens up the last door on the right cautiously without specifically checking for traps, his confidence boosted by the utter state of destruction.
........
The storeroom lies mainly undisturbed, wooden buckets, moldy rags, and an old broom having escaped the ursine ravages suffered by the rest of the estate.

L'Mont continues through the ruined doorway at the end of the passage into a larger passageway.
L'Mont, I moved your icon on the map in order to properly fail your Perception check. I need a reflex save from L'Mont, please.

![]() |

Not entirely sure what just happened - GM, please read my reply to your PM.
Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

![]() |

Ushi moves slowly behind the party, keeping watch for any foes approaching from behind.
Made one move, let me know if he can get further before bad things happen to L'Mont.

![]() |

Seeing nothing in this room, Mongo moves back out into the hallway.
I won't move on the map until whatever is happening with L'Mont resolves

![]() |

"Aaaaaaah!"
L'Mont realizes he is screaming, and that he is on fire, in that order.
Shut it, Penumberton! You want to wake up everything in the place? And you're probably probably deafening Luwei, so knock it off!
With an an effort, L'Mont snaps his jaws shut. Looking himself over, he assures himself that whatever caused the flames, they have gone out.
In something approaching his normal whisper, albeit more hoarse than usual, he says, "Fire trap. Burned badly, but still up and moving. Safe to come in, but do NOT touch the door behind me."
Based on where he hurts the most, L'Mont guesses that the flames came from behind him and to his left while he was facing the south door.
And maybe a little above me?
He looks up in that direction, and sees the statue of the Tien warrior pointing his sword directly at him.
I am pretty sure it wasn't doing that when I came in. Not good.
"Luwei? Tell Glastor. Gonna need him to use that wand of mine."

![]() |

The wayang twists his body as the first of the flames licks his left arm, missing the brunt of the gout.

...[he] sees the statue of the Tien warrior pointing his sword directly at him. I am pretty sure it wasn't doing that when I came in. Not good.
The room is still, apart from smoke arising from the rogue's form.

![]() |

Dammit! Some protector you are, DePon. I knew I shoulda stayed closer to the front!
Hearing the wayang's scream, Mongo rushes forward to see what's attacking.

![]() |

From his viewpoint, the half-orc can see L'Mont patting at his smoking clothing, looking scornfully to his left. The smell of roast wayang smells just like other forms of roast flesh.
GMs are mysterious: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Nothing else moves.

![]() |

Seeing L'Mont upright and not fighting anything, Mongo stops running and stands just outside the room, peering in.
"You OK? Is it safe to come in?"

![]() |

L'Mont nods sheepishly.
"Just don't touch this door." He starts to tap the portal, then thinks better of it and just waves in its general direction instead.

![]() |

Mongo steps into the room and quickly turns and raises his sword, startled by the threatening statue he can now see. After a moment of adrenaline, he lowers his sword a little, realizing what he's seeing.
It's just a statue, dummy.

![]() |

Luwei rushes to the doorway of the room at the end of the hall, taking in the smoking but alive form of L'Mont, the skulking brute checking the perimeter of the room, and the somewhat-marred statue of a Tian-Shu warrior pointing his sword at the space occupied by the wayang.
GMs, being GMs: 1d20 ⇒ 10

Hearing the commotion, the nagaji makes his way further into the building, abandoning his overwatch. "What has happened?" The unknown was an annoying gnat in his ear.

![]() |

Embarrassed by the fuss, L'Mont brushes off their concern.
"I'm fine. Sorry for the yellin'. Just surprised. That thing -" pointing at the statue - "torched me. Woulda been worse if I'd been facin' the other way."
"That statue looks familiar. Is it the ghost that was possessing the bear? He must be protecting this place."
L'Mont looks up at the statue. "Spooky security ain't really my area. Maybe Glastor and Ushi can get the dead guy back where he belongs."
He gives the group a grim smile and turns back to the door. "Booby traps, them I know something about. And good news is, I think we found what we're lookin' for. Anyone goes to this much trouble to keep us outta this room, must have somethin' pretty good inside it."
"Now we just gotta figure out how to get inside without getting cooked."
(Dink, what kind of rolls should L'Mont make to figure out whether the trap is still armed and if so, how to avoid triggering it or disable it? Straight Disable Device, or does he need a Perception check first - otherwise is he going to have disable without touching the door? If he needs to make a perception check, I'm going to ask for aid another from other PCs first, so I'm just going to take 10 on DD here.)
Disable Device: 10 + 10 = 20

Reluctant to turn his back to the statue, Mongo sidles over toward the ruined door to the west and peaks through, scanning for threats.

![]() |

Mongo peers into what appears to have once been a great hall, a cold hearth and multiple ruined pieces of large furniture the only main clues leading to this assumption.
GM fun: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Mongo sees neither anything moving, nor anything of interest in his brief glance in the room.
The wayang takes a fresh and systematic look at the door, attempting to determine what, if anything, triggered the flame trap.
Any Aid Another checks can go now. L'Mont, you're doing a Detect Traps Perception check, knowing that a trap is/was present. I'm assuming that you're not going to touch the door again until the results of the check are final.
The party awaits the other members' input, systematically trying to make sense of the abandoned estate.

![]() |

L'Mont peers at the door again. "Could use some more eyes over here."
Step right up and roll a perception check - all you need is a 10, folks, and this little wayang gets another 2 added to his roll coming up. Anyone with - or without - a decent perception modifier who wants to help L'Mont find the trigger for the trap with aid another, come on over and roll - he could use all the help he can get, this is a tough one.

Bolty tries to position the largest of broken boards in the doorway to the courtyard, eventually abandoning the project as he realises that it won't provide any blockade.
The red Xs are areas where the doors are completely broken down and torn off the hinges. You'd do better crafting your own door from scratch.

Hearing the wayang's request, and seeing nothing in the room to the west, Mongo comes over to help.
Perception aid:: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

With several of the others helping L'Mont make a visual inspection of every inch of the door - Mongo has to lift him up to check the top of the doorframe, much to his chagrin - the rogue feels confident that they will uncover the trigger to the fire trap.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

![]() |

The wayang along with the half-orc take time to carefully search the area where the trap went off until satisfied.

"Sorry to see you got hurt again, L'Mont. Desna will provide healing, however." Glastor channels to heal all within 30' of him.

"We won't need your wand for now. Hope that feels better."
He then moves up the rest of the way, and casts guidance on the wayang. He then looks at the door, in case he notices anything. perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
"I think it is safe now... right?"

"That's... weird. Don't see anything. Should see something. Gonna try to open it. Might wanna move back."
L'Mont tries to open the door.
Disable device: 10 + 10 = 20

L'Mont holds his breath and tries the handle.
...
...
...
Nothing happens. The handle doesn't even turn. It appears to be locked.
He pulls out his tools and tries to pick the lock, taking 10.
Time and neglect have weakened the door and its lock, and the wayang finds his careful ministrations on the door mechanism rewarded with a satisfying click.
......
...

![]() |

"So, L'Mont... would you like to be protected by the blessings of Desna? You seem to be getting hurt a lot."
Did you apply the 6hp of healing?
If L'Mont agrees, Glastor will cast shield of faith on him.

![]() |

Glastor - I hadn't yet, but have now. Thanks for the reminder.
Does it really take a gnome priest saying it to your face to get you to realize you're taking stupid risks?
"Thanks. Not gonna need it. Maybe one of the big guys."
L'Mont steps back from the door and puts away his lockpicks.
"It'll open now. Who wants the first look inside? Mongo? Bolty?" L'Mont quickly puts an arm on the gnome's shoulder. "Not you, Glastor."
He loads his crossbow and points it at the door.
"Whoever goes first, the rest of us gotcha covered."

![]() |

Ushi's footfalls are soft despite the weight he carries as he moves behind Mongo. "Anything within is likely valuable or ageless. Beware another restless spirit, Pathfinders." he advises, gaze intent upon the still closed door.

![]() |

"I suppose it's my turn"
Mongo looks around to make sure everyone else is clear of the door.
No time like the present.
Mongo opens the door.

![]() |

The door opens easily.
Inside, in stark contrast to the decaying ruin of the rest of the manor, this combination of bedroom and office is almost pristine, save for a thick layer of dust. One wall (the northern wall) contains shelves bearing books and scrolls, and another wall (the southern wall) is covered with an enormous map of central Tian Xia. On the desk (to the east in front of the cold hearth) lay several sheets of thick paper, their script indecipherable under ages of dust.

Luwei follows Mongo into the room, then casts detect magic. She waits to distinguish individual auras, and attempts to identify any items she finds.
Spellcraft if necessary: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
As she look around the room, she whispers in awe, "What treasures to behold."

![]() |

Nothing registers as magical here, though the calligraphy set resting next to the papers on the desk appears to be of very fine make. A small console table up against the northern wall is delicately painted with birds and flowers, integrating the handle of the single central drawer in its face in the decorations. Lastly, a masterfully-crafted pole-axe of Tien origin rests against the wall in the northwestern corner of the room.

![]() |

Mongo looks around the room for any threats (If necessary: perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21). Assuming he doesn't see anything, he heads back out the door and keeps an eye down the hallway so his more learned colleagues can look around safely.
