Mongo DePon |
"Aw crap, here we go!"
If L'Mont was in F27, and the bear charged, then I'm guessing the bear is now in G26. Assuming that's right:
Mongo moves to F26 and attempts an overrun combat maneuver to get past the bear into H26:
CMB: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Because of Breaker Rush, the maneuver does not provoke. If it's successful, I deal 4 points of bludgeoning damage.
Just for convenience sake: overrun rules
Feng Luwei |
"Look at me, little bear. Not at the tasty goblin. Look into my eyes."
Luwei gestures alluringly as she casts lock gaze on the bear.
Will DC 18, or bear has 20% miss chance on attacks against allies other than Luwei for 1 round.
Ushi Goroshi |
Seeing the devastation wrought, Ushi raises his shield and summons magic to his hand. Moving forward to fill the gap, his touch doles out healing to L'Mont.: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Move Action to space adjacent to the bear and L'Mont, assuming Mongo managed his overrun.
Free Action to deliver the charge to L'Mont.
Ushi does not currently threaten, so no flanking bonus yet.
GM Dinketry |
The nagaji casts a spell and presses forward with his shield out, touching the wounded wayang as he helps to fence in the yowling bear. Feng Luwei begins beckoning and gesturing to the bear, who catches her gaze...
Will save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
...fixes it, snorts, shakes his head and stares ominously at the sorcerer.
Feng, you believe your spell worked.
The half-orc yells "Aw crap, here we go!" and forces his way past the yowling and somewhat-distracted panda, smashing at him with his shield as he goes.
Mongo, your move and resultant attack are successful.
Glastor extracts himself from the immediate combat after offering a healing touch to the wayang as well.
We await Bolty's action.
Bolty |
Boly moves past the bear, to get into a flank to help L'Mont, hoping that the bear's locked gaze will protect him.
AC 16, provoking
At point blank range Bolty takes a moment to aim for the bear's softer underbelly, then pulls the trigger on his crossbow.
Using a grit point for sharp shoot to target touch AC
Touch AC: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 5 + 1 = 23
damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 + (3) + 1 = 12
Threatening with cestus.
GM Dinketry |
The bear snarls at the passing crossbowman and takes an absent-minded swipe, still focused on the sorcerer.
Claw attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 121d3 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
I won't bother rolling the 20% concealment check as the bear has obviously missed. Bolty, where is that extra +3 damage of yours coming from?
L'Mont Penumberton |
Did the sorceress just call me a goblin?
Whipsawed between the mauling and the magical healing, it takes L'Mont a moment to spot the opening when the bear is distracted by Bolty's attack. He quickly draws another sharpened dagger and jams it into the panda's hide.
Dagger, sneak attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 5 + 2 = 141d4 + 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 1 + (1) = 3
Head, meet wall.
GM Dinketry |
The bear roars at the two bolts in its backside, its concentration upon the sorcerer dissuaded. It rises up on two legs, swivelling and snarling as it swats and bites at the crossbowman.
Claw: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 71d3 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Claw: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 231d3 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 Concealment roll (low=miss): 1d100 ⇒ 7 Miss!
Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 61d6 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
The bear, disoriented between the sorcerer's glare and the pain in its belly, misses all three savage blows.
The rest of you can act!
Ushi Goroshi |
Concentration DC17: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Best to be cautious against this beast. Ushi thinks, focusing his mind. When he speaks, it is with power and authority. "Feel the guidance of history in your strikes!" His benediction complete, he draws a fine dagger from its jeweled sheath and settles into a fighting stance behind his shield.
Bless is now active for everyone. Ushi is also threatening to give Mongo the flank.
Move Action draw dagger.
Glastor Gilderhoff III |
Glastor looks disappointed when Ushi casts his bless spell. "Awww... I wanted to do that!" instead, he steps behind Ushi, and uses his domain power to grant L'Mont a bit of luck. For the next turn, L'Mont rolls all his d20s twice, taking the higher roll. "May you be blessed with beauty and butterflies!"
Mongo DePon |
Now! While it's distracted!
Power attacking with my longsword:
Attack: : 1d20 + 4 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 2 - 1 = 6
Damage: : 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 11
Trying too hard to seize the moment, Mongo swings wildly and misses, badly.
Edit: That attack line should say 1d20+6+2+1-1, but I can't fix it now. Rolled a nat 1, so it doesn't matter
GM Dinketry |
The gnome and the nagaji cast spells, the latter doing so in careful fashion so as to not attract the thrashing bear's ire.
Mongo slashes wildly, forcing Bolty to adjust his attack with his cestus to avoid the half-orc's wild blow. As such, the missile man's slash misses its mark.
The sorcerer remains intent upon her ensorcelling.
Will save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
The bear whips around, intent upon her.
Top of Round 3! L'Mont, your turn.
L'Mont Penumberton |
This was a terrible idea. Should have stayed in the shadows, taken my shots from a distance, let the big guys take the hits. But it's so much more efficient to use knives for everything!
Pushing aside his misgivings, guided by Ushi's blessing and Glastor's luck, L'Mont lashes out at the bear with a dagger in each hand,
Full attack, sharpened dagger 1: 1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 221d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 151d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Full attack, sharpened dagger 2: 1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 161d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 171d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
EDIT - adding sneak attack dice if either dagger hits:
Dagger 1: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Dagger 2: 1d8 ⇒ 3
GM Dinketry |
The shadowy rogue sinks his dagger deep into the raging bear's undercarriage. The roaring quickly becomes a pathetic mewling as the dying creature thrashes, causing L'Mont to jump aside and deflecting his second dagger.
The bear pitches forward onto its chest, snuffles once, and is still.
The party pauses.
Without warning, a ghostly bluish form rises from the cooling corpse of the panda bear. A scowling Tian-Shu warrior dressed in ornate ceremonial armour pulls loose of the bear's form. His left hand holds a long-blades sword. As you watch, the form gestures silently with a swift slash of the blade, shaking his head and pointing away from the ruined estate.
And like that - Poof! - the form dissipates into the encroaching night.
Combat over!
Mongo DePon |
"What the heck was that?"
Mongo lowers his sword and prods the bear corpse a little, just to make sure.
Ushi Goroshi |
Lowering the shield from eye level, the nagaji rolls his head slowly. "A guardian, of some sort." His statement lilts upward, half question. "Using the animal to keep intruders away." His gaze turns to L'Mont, and then the rest. "Do you need further healing?"
Glastor Gilderhoff III |
Glastor walks over to the panda, tears falling down his face. "The poor creature. It was not in control of itself. It never wanted to fight us!"
He attempts to stabilize the bear, just in case it is still alive.
heal check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
If the panda lives, he will walk up to it, and cast cure light wounds, burning his deathwatch spell.
CWL: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
GM Dinketry |
The panda's pulse is weak but steady after Glastor's ministrations. It does not awake.
Mongo DePon |
"What are you doing? Even if it didn't want to fight us before, it sure as heck will now!"
Mongo sees the gnome tending to the bear and readies himself to resume battle should the bear make any hostile move.
Glastor Gilderhoff III |
Hugging the bear, putting his little body between Mongo and it, he cries out, "He will live now... this beautiful, peaceful, noble beast." Glastor starts making comforting noises to the bear, but sees that it will not wake soon. "It will be no trouble to us... and I will make sure it lives before we leave here.
"I told you all, NOBODY DIES when I am on a mission!"
Mongo DePon |
Mongo lowers his sword a little, but continues eyeing the bear (and the gnome) suspiciously.
Someday, holy man, you may get yourself into some serious trouble that way.
Ushi Goroshi |
Ushi looks at the gnome protecting the fallen beast and shrugs, before a thought appears to strike, lifting his head. "Ah, Glastor. It seems I did not share the full knowledge of my abilities with you. I apologize. When traveling together, do not concern yourself with prayers of blessing." He bows slightly in apology.
L'Mont Penumberton |
L'Mont shakes his head in response to Ushi's question and hunts around for the dagger he threw at the beginning of combat.
GM Dinketry |
Daylight has begun to fail. Low-light conditions have now set in. Bolty, you are the only party member affected. A squall of rain kicks up, adding a chill to the evening. Darkened and doorless entryways to the estate buildings lay open, beckoning brave adventurers.
New map posted. Here it is as well Please don't move the big grey box just yet.
Mongo DePon |
survival: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
"Hm. That beast smashed this place up pretty good. That thing inside it musta had it pretty riled up."
Bolty |
After laboriously reloading his crossbow Bolty will pull out his wayfinder from under his shirt and use it to cast light on its self to aid his vision.
Bolty comments "Lets get inside before we get soaked."
Glastor Gilderhoff III |
"Guess I can spare my wand, then? That's fine, I guess. "
Religion: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Glastor Gilderhoff III |
Glastor moves up and checks out the shrubbery.
Mongo DePon |
I don't like this. Too many open doors. Too many hiding places.
Mongo is glances into the building behind him (stables?). Not going inside, just looking in to see if he sees any obvious threats.
GM Dinketry |
Mongo moves around nervously, looking in the long building to the north. The rest of the party mills about the courtyard aimlessly. Bolty activates his wayfinder shedding a sliver more light to the south part of the courtyard.
L'Mont, as you are the lead scout...feel free to choose where you'd like to go. I've slightly minimised the grey box on the map.
Mongo DePon |
Seeing no immediate threat, Mongo moves back toward the rest of the party.
Glastor Gilderhoff III |
"Ushi, if we see that spirit once more, we might want channel our healing power through it... might at least banish it for a while?"
Glastor will cast longstrider on himself, so as to move at a rate of 30', just in case!
L'Mont Penumberton |
Did L'Mont find his dagger?
L'Mont looks questioningly at Mongo after the big fighter checks the stables, and waits for a response before moving forward. See anything interesting? If not:
The wayang replaces the two daggers he used against the bear with two of the still-sharpened daggers (but ordinary steel, rather than cold iron) from his bandolier, then pads silently up to the doorway of the nearest entrance to the main building and peers through the doorway into the gloom.
Moved L'Mont on the map.
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Mongo DePon |
Seeing L'Mont's questioning look:
"I didn't see anything in there, but somebody sure tore things up."
GM Dinketry |
Ushi, what spell did you cast? L'Mont, you found your daggers.
L'Mont pads silently up to the gaping doorway of what appears to once have been a dining area, a smashed table without legs lying amongst near-powdered crockery the best clues of the use of this room. A smashed interior door leads to a larger food preparation chamber in a similar state of defilement.
Once inside, the wayang signals to the remainder of the group to follow. Bolty takes point well behind the wayang, his wayfinder illuminating the rooms in the normal spectrum.
There's a pile of bear spoor in the northeast corner of the first room.
L'Mont Penumberton |
I am going to regret this SO MUCH.
L'Mont walks over to the spoor - taking his time, looking around, up, down, etc. as he goes, not wanting to miss the possibility of something shiny - and visually inspects the spoor for anything interesting.
Taking 10
Perception: 10 + 5 = 15
L'Mont Penumberton |
A surprise poop elemental is at least a CR4 encounter, bub.
L'Mont Penumberton |
L'Mont could take 20 to look around, or two other characters could aid another and he can take 10 and look faster. Is there another smashed door to the south?
GM Dinketry |
Move yourselves along on the MAP if you'd like. Bolty, you'll need to come indoors to avoid the rain.
L'Mont notes the door immediately to the south of the dining room is broken down, revealing a long hallway with multiple doorways. All manner of destruction to the floors and walls, not to mention almost all of the doors, confirms the bear's passing. The hallway runs about 40 feet and appears to open into a room.
That's all you can see from the room, L'Mont.
