Alaric slowly, quietly steps towards the meeting room, deep in thought. Not about the assignment he is about to receive. But about the assignment he just completed. And deep within, a whisper from the past - barely contained - makes the surrounding objects shiver.

About a minute after the human enters, a half-elf follows.

Where the human is quiet, the half-elf seems to be in an animated conversation with a small draconic creature.

"You can ask your questions, but I don't think they consider you an actual Pathfinder," the half-elf says. "Plus, I don't think they can understand you. I barely can." The familiar chitters back furiously.

"I'll tell them."

Upon seeing the human, the half-elf extends his hand.

"Greetings. I am Fatham," he says. "Oh, and before he gets upset...this is Vexer."

A tall lean man of Taldan descent enters and drops his pack inside the door.

Good day, all. I am Mykel, of the Therinors of Cassomir. Delighted to meet you all. Thankfully I am not late...was on a ship that met nasty headwinds on the way here...thankfully the winds shifted in our favour. tge man says with a nod of his head. His gear reflects his profession, that of a rondelero, a swordsman native to Taldor. His wickedly curved blade hangs at his waist, his armor not making even the smallest clink from moving.

A stunning woman with flowing raven-black hair clad in gleaming armor approaches the rest of the pathfinders:"Well met friends! I'm Ashara. We'll be spending time together in the next future and I'm sure by the end of the assignment we'll have shared something more meaningful than mere words"

There is a rumble, which prods the unremarkable, studiously neutral-faced man to run his hand through his hair, wince and add: "And there is Thurismund, who is not have problem speak... Who does not have a problem speaking, but is very... Anger-y. I keep inside for now. Excuses."

Technically it will be Monday here in a few hours, so I don't see any harm in getting the briefing started!

“I have a mission for you,” says Istivil Bosk, the Venture-Captain of Daggermark in the River Kingdoms. After receiving the assignment from Venture-Captain Adril Hestram in Absalom, traveling for weeks across the Inner Sea and up the lengthy Sellen River, and with barely an hour to adjust to Daggermark’s sights and sounds, the Venture-Captain of Daggermark now paces back and forth across cramped quarters crammed full of maps, books, and adventuring gear.

“Your timing is perfect, friends,” explains Bosk, an elderly man with graying hair and a pinched, weathered face. He waves a parchment in his hand. “I received another letter just yesterday.” He holds up another stack of letters. “It’s from the Black Marquis— I believe his real name is Bazzak—the leader of a band of brigands surreptitiously known as the Pirate Pact. In all of these letters, he claims to need our help and offers us The Memoirs of the Silver Brotherhood, a rare text —maybe the rarest— in exchange. The Society tried for years to track it down and now Bazzaks claims to be ready to give it to us. I’m sending you north to Deadbridge near the Echo Wood to meet this Black Marquis and offer him your help with whatever it is he needs. I want this book, and you’ll get it for me.”

And so the mission travels north along the Sellen River, to the aptly named village of Deadbridge, a rundown hamlet partially built on wharves. It is there, in a rundown antique manor house where stands Urdul Bazzak, the Black Marquis.

“I rule the Pirate Pact and with it the stretch of the Sellen River between here and Numeria,” proudly states the portly little man. “The waterways are the lifeblood of the River Kingdoms, so you must understand that any menace to the river is a menace to the balance of power.” The Black Marquis stops and quickly looks to his left and right before leaning in and continuing in hushed tones. “Unless someone deals with this threat soon, I could lose everything. Normally I would rely on my most trusted lieutenants, but …” Bazzak sits up, regains some composure, and resumes.

“The book I’m willing to trade for your service—The Memoirs of the Silver Brotherhood— contains information about an Azlanti treasure vault deep within the Echo Wood. That’s where I sent my most trusted lieutenants. Only, on their way they were waylaid by spiders and abominations and only one returned alive. Lady Riverbane sent out another ship upon her return, the Hanspur’s Luck, to search for my men. The Luck hasn’t returned either." Bazzak points to the only other person in the room, a raven-haired beauty standing in a corner.

“Lady Riverbane is my most trusted second, and she will take one of my best ships and guide you back to the Azlanti vault. Rid the river of these monstrous spiders and their abominations, find the Hanspur’s Luck, and uncover the whereabouts of my men, and the book is yours. Do it quickly, do it quietly, and do it before the rest of the Pact realize I’ve sent my best men on fools’ errands that may have killed them all.”

he looks desperately around the table, the finishes with "When you're ready, meet Lady Riverbane down at the harbor on the Scrag Fisher. She's a 50-foot long, single-masted vessel rigged with a lugsail. You can't miss her!"

Fatham's familiar chatters in some primitive animal language.

"This does sound dangerous," Fatham responds.

"Distasteful as this is we are duty bound to assist yopu "marquis" Ashara states with an uncharacteristically cold tone of voice.

"Tell us about these spiders. Overgrown and poisonous I guess. Is there anything else notable about them we should be aware of? You want this threat removed. We want the book. The least you can do is tell us all you know about what to expect when dealing with this arachnid infestation problem of yours"

A palpable wave of excitement seem to emanate from Alaric, who still looks rather morose all things told. "I am thinking he is expect of us the killing of the spiders, is not?" He clears his throat nervously. "You not know if there is. Ahem. Fey with spiders. No?"

At the word fey, a voice, seemingly much like Alaric's but deeper, gruffer, and without the accent wrenches itself out of the Iobarian's being. "Filthy bug-winged c*&^s, I will RIP THEIR HEADS OFF IF THEY ARE INVOLVED! THOSE LITTLE T&*#S WILL WEEP BLOOD!"

Large eyes appear in the depths of the shadows in the corner of the room. "ooh... spiders and other things... not a problem... I think," the quiet, raspy voice says. "But what is Thurismund? Let us see..." the gaunt wayang moans as he scuttles from the darkness and begins to paw at Alaric. "He talks? That is wondrous!" He ponders, now completely ignoring Bazzak and Lady Riverbane.

The Marquis turns from one Pathfinder to the other as the cacophony of various forms of the same question fills the room, but the raven haired beauty turns from the window with an icy glare and answers first. "I happen to be Lady Riverbane.. the bane of all who stand against me on the river; and the only survivor of the first expedition even though there were 10 of us that began. The second ship that I sent out when I returned was also crewed by 10 men. I imagine that we will have time to get to know each other better on our journey up river. I do not know what type of spider they were.. just that they were large and obviously were poisonous. And I have no idea about any fey that might be in the area.. they are not common to such populated and traveled areas."

Ashara Lethani wrote:

Ignoring the icy tone and glare, the Marquis waves his had dismissively at Ashara. "I am telling you all I know.. and Lady Riverbane as well. There may be bandits along the way, but they would be bold indeed to strike against me, even now. As for any other obstacles, that is what you are paid for, no?

Alaric ir'Ganak wrote:

Both pirates look to Alaric with alarm and concern as the.. thing.. manifests and then departs. They continue to look askance at the man until the end of the conference, not quite pacified by Aleric's apology or explanation.

Finally, Bazzak waves towards the door and Lady Riverbane takes the cue, leading the team out the door. "Anything else, I am sure we can take care of on the way. I will meet you on board the boat when you are ready!" With a swish of coattails she disappears down the hallway at a brisk pace.

Fatham listens sympathetically.

"I am sorry for the loss of your crew--likely your friends, too," he says.

His familiar, Vexer, also chitters something.

"We will deal with this problem," the half-elf says. "I expect we will need some antivenom. Is there any place we might purchase additional doses before we depart?"

Alaric nods. "The antivenom is good idea. Alaric give you the coin, you go and buy please? I must..." He interrupts himself, shuddering. "I need to let Thurismund out. He now think fey are here."

Either on board the ship or outside the alchemist or healer's shop in Deadbridge, Alaric will focus for a solid minute, staying absolutely silent as he does, and out manifests a replica of Alaric, down to the minute detail, except this one appears to you in shades of red. "I am Thurismund. Where are the f@&&ing fey? They have scores of innocent lives to atone for and I HATE BEING A DEBT COLLECTOR."

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

As you troop out after Lady Riverbane and inquire as to an alchemists shop, she stops and turns to you. "My apologies for my abrupt behavior.. those men were my friends and comrades, and I blame my self as the leader for their loss.. and to be the only one to return on top of that? Well, it has not been easy to live with myself. You asked for an alchemist. There is a good shop two streets over and a block north by the name of the Cracked Lizard. I would recommend going there rather than any of the dives closer to the riverfront. You've a much better chance to actually get what you paid for and make it out with your purses intact! If you get into any trouble, don't hesitate to let it be known that you are working with myself and the Black Marquis.. that should keep things civil. When you are ready, meet me at the Scrag Fisher and we will get going. I have to go make sure the boat is ready to cast off when you get there!

With a last look at Ashara, She tries to reassure the Oracle. "I truly hope so. There is a debt to pay here, and one I am looking to settle as quickly as you are!"
Lady Riverbane turns back towards the docks and melts away into the crowd.

You follow her directions and find the Cracked Lizard easy enough, and with a few well placed names you manage to secure all of the antivenom you feel you may need.. the real thing and at a decent price. Standard rates for the antivenom, and enough for anyone that wants some.

While most of the group is out preparing, Alaric disappears down a currently unused alleyway to let Thurismund out to play for a bit. The raging ghost sends more than one curious passerby sprinting away with soiled smallclothes.

When the group finally reaches the Scrag Fisher, you find it to be a nest of activity as the 6 men and women scurry about trying to make ready to sail. Lady Riverbane stands in the midst of the chaos, the eye of the storm surging around her. Her calm confidence and magnetism leaves no room for the often insubordinate pirate crew to argue as her voice lashes out with reprimand and compliment alike.

She turns and gestures you aboard as she sees you watching the apparent maelstrom, and invites you onto the quarterdeck as she returns her attentions to the doings of the crew.
"Yo there, Andrezi! Fox!" she calls out to two of the men. "Cast off the mooring lines aft and fore!"

Turning to a long legged woman scurrying down from the rigging she continues her orders "Esmerelda! Catch the pole and guide us out. Swing the bow and I'll catch the current with the tiller. Lively now! Step it up, girl!"

A few more orders ring out as the boat gets underway. As the ship settles into routine, she finally turns to you. "This is my ship, and there is only room for one Captain, Understand? I know you Pathfinders tend to... get creative.. with your orders, but I run a tight ship."
She gestures out to the crew along the decks. "I've already sent 19 men and women to gods only knows what ends. They will follow as long as there isn't any choice or challenge to my authority. I will make sure no challenges come from below.. but if you want the Memoirs, you'll have to step lively as well. Together, we can rescue or recover my men and return safely with our prize. Can you work with me here?"
She pauses, studying each face in turn and awaiting confirmation.
Once everyone has agreed to work together for the common good, she nods her head. "This is going to take a bit. You're welcome to take you liberty of the boat. She's not large, but shes a good lass. Just stay out of the way of my crew and you can't go wrong. I'll let you know when we are getting close."

With that, she returns to the duties of running the boat.

Since it left Deadbridge, the Scrag Fisher has been cutting a straight furrow into the lazy waters of the Sellen River, making good speed thanks to its industrious crew actively manning the ship’s sail and ropes.

Alaric and Ashara both agree vocally with Lady Riverbane, while the rest of the group silently gives consent.

Deadbridge is already far behind when an exclamation rises. “Sail Ho!” One of the robust sailors points ahead while turning toward Lady Riverbane standing at the helm. “It’s a cog, Milady. And it flies no colors—should we tender these trespassers?” Looking at the incoming vessel, Lady Riverbane answers in a stern voice: “Nay! Not today, man. We have our mission. We’ll stick to it.” Without another word, the crew gets back to working the hawser and lanyards.

As the two ships draw closer, the other craft’s pitiful state becomes obvious. With planks and riggings missing in places, sailors frantically move about the deck and appear to have difficulty steering their ship. As the two ships avoid collision and pass alongside each other, a shout rises— ”Now!” followed by a volley of grappling hocks from the other vessel. The Scrag Fisher is under attack!

As soon as she realizes this, Lady Riverbane scurries for the nearest ratline and climbs aloft, calling to her crew "Below decks, NOW!! Let the heroic Pathfinders fight them off. My Crew, FALL OUT BELOW DECKS!!!"

It looked like the dark blue one was crossing over from the map I was looking at. It has since changed, so I suppose Thurismund would have to wait for one of them to get to the ship. So Thurismund delays I guess. Or we can redirect his anger at a rope.

We will do a readied action as it has to be a bladed weapon to cut the ropes. Sorry I did not explain that earlier.

Fatham casts Mage Armor on himself while sending his familiar out.

The Pirates Attack!!
Burgundy sash pirate lifts a bow and fires at Pherryn and curses as a river swell throws him off and his arrow thuds into a baluster.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

The pirate with an Orange do rag hefts a long plank over the rail and braces it against the rail of the Scrag Fisher. Immediately, Yellow belt jumps aboard and starts to move between the ships.
Acro: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

He holds his feet and lashes out at Mykel with his scimitar but he too misses the mark.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

The rest of the pirates line the rail with their bows, waiting for their chance to cross!

Dmg T: 1d6 ⇒ 4

Despite the sudden arrowstorm, the only member of the team to actually get hit is the dead guy!!

Stone Call: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6

6 HP damage to everyone inside the red circle on the map. I'm unsure whether the plank would take damage as well. For the next 5 rounds, the pirate ship and the gang plank are considered difficult terrain.

Pferryn shouts, "The sky is falling!" and ducks beneath the rail looking for any cover from the ranged attacks of the pirates.

Alright, The arrow bounces off the dead guy!
Alaric: Once again it seems you were beat to the punch. Do you want Therimund to advance and attack the next in line attacking Green?

Pferryn calls down a rain of rocks and debris upon the pirates, showering the ship and combatants alike in rubble! The pirates are all bruised and bloody, but keep their feet as the rest of the Pathfinders rally.

Mykel cuts down the pirate trying to cross over, and as the body falls into the water with a splash, Therimund rushes in, full of rage and spite!

Vexer and Fatham continue to argue tactics while the bird stays very far out of reach of the rain of rocks and stones. Meanwhile, Fatham draws and hurls a javelin at the priate with the blue scarf tied around his neck, dropping him back onto the deck to twitch a few times before dying. I moved Vexer out of the AOE.

Ashara once again grants Mykel the power of divine intervention.

The remaining pirates are calling out support to one another, encouraging each other to press forward and do all manner of vile things to you!
Burgundy sash fires another arrow at Pferryn, missing the mark once more.
Arrow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Orange leaps from the pirate skiff and lands on top of Mykel, trying to wrestle him to the ground. Mykel uses his parry to break the pirates grip on him, but the riposte floats by the tumbling pirate.
Acro: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Grapple/ CMB: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

The green cloaked pirate gives a hearty "Har!" and steps onto the plank, swinging at Therimund with his scimitar but missing.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Cyan and Light blue neckerchiefs continue to send arrows across the decks, two more sticking into Therimund! The first glances off of the thick skin of the manifested ghost, the other causes just a minor tear in the ectoplasmic fabric of its being.

Thorimund steps up onto the plank and attacks the incoming pirate! With his first slam, he nearly tosses himself into the river, but the second one blasts the pirate into goo!

Mykel slashes harmlessly at the pirate that tried to tackle him, then squares his feet into a defensive posture, ready for anything!

Fatham draws and hurls another javelin but misses the mark. Meanwhile, Ashara grants Mykel another dose of assistance!

Pferryn shows his distaste for hand to hand combat with an odd little sound before conjuring a ball of acid that smacks right into the pirates face, easily burning through his eyes and killing him.

The pirates, after seeing that over half their number have fallen, decide to find some easier prey! calling to each other to cut the lines, hold the ship, and other conflicting orders just adds to the cacophony of battle! The good thing for the intrepid adventurers though is that instead of continuing their rain of arrows, the pirates are now very concerned with their proximity to you and decide getting away is more important than ticking you off further!!

The pirate with a burgundy feather takes his dagger and cuts the line next to him, Just as the pirate with the bold purple cloak does so from the bow.

Mr. Cyan trousers pushes the plank into the water below, and Thorimund simply steps off the back end safely. Light Blue Vest cuts the line next to him as well.
