Round 4 (6)

Conditions: Healthy | 1 NL Dmg | Combat Expertise --> 20 AC

If these centipedes are moving out their current square into their target's, then Thout would get an AoO because they cannot 5-foot step? If so, he would wait to use it in case any of them went for himself or Soros, so I'm guessing that means that he would attack the one that went after Naia.

If allowed, Thout's AoO:

Thout sees Edan helping out D'ogryn by distracting the bug when it suddenly leaps after Edan. Thout flinches, wanting to swing his axe, but he controls his reaction and waits. His objective is to protect Soros. He needs to wait until he is sure Soros is safe from their aggression. When the last bug lunges after Naia, Thout acts. He swings his axe in a powerful blow trying to help it meet its end.

Attack (CE): 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 6 - 1 = 17
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

EDIT: Didn't consider flanking. Would that be a +3?

Thout - No AoO see discussion thread.

Naia sees the creature darting back away and tries to reverse her defensive swing and strike the critter but her skill with the mace is lacking and she over swings and the head simply flies over the centipede but it forces it back away and towards Thout. She curses under her breath at the clumsy use of the weapon and realizes she will need to spend more time learning to handle it.

Soros seems to be babbling something and Thout can hear it from behind him. He seems to be trying to recite texts he knows or some spell he has remembered. Thout glances back towards him quickly and can see his face is covered in sweat, is pale, and the half-dwarf can see he is trying to fight through the pain he is experiencing in his legs and side. The actual wound on his legs is not as bad as Thout first thought. But obviously, the multiple bites have had their effect. Soros calls out something that sounds like nonsense...then he speaks again."There are five key protections that must be addressed in summoning creatures to ensure the caster is protected. No wait...it is six and two of them have to be addressed the other four are dependent on the type of creature being summoned. Wait...no that is not it...AGHHH...these bites burn to high h*ll!"

The bugs rush Edan and Naia. She successfully repels the attack while Edan falls prey to its bite. "Another dose of bug's venom. Soon, he'll be like Soros!" While Thout looks betwixt them, Edan strikes with his beaming staff and beats the centipede back towards Thout, the attack and the light befuddling the bug. It steps directly into Thout's swing, giving him a chance to send it down the path all must eventually tread.

Fighting off the wooziness of insectile bites Naia again attempts to mash a centipede, her inability to strike earlier and frustration at her body's failure to overcome the poison coupling to make for a determined, resolute strike:

Thout brings his axe down on the centipede and splits the insect in half in midair and finishes his swing by adjusting so that it finishes by splitting the head from the top half before it hits the ground. The head flies off and slams into the wall and slithers down to the floor and drops into the hole the insects came from.

Now only one centipede is left and it doesn't appear willing to concede the fight with the party. It seems to chitter and click as if to say "come get me!"

Centipede 4 is dead

The below is to get Soro's condition and status up to date with what has actually happened to him.

Soros

Soros continues to babble on and on for a few more seconds and then suddenly collapses against the corner... His body slowly slumps to the floor as his head and shoulders fall behind the stove. It is hard to tell if he is dead or simply passed out. His face is flush and his eyes are swollen and there is a purple tinge to his skin it seems like. His staff falls to the floor and the magical light glows from the floor showing all the dust and dirt that has been kicked up everything and everyone moving around.

Soros is unconscious from nonlethal damage from the last salvo of attacks on him from the centipedes. He has no lethal damage at all. Correcting my mistakes on the combat sequence.

Assuming we are out of combat

Seeing Rabalar skewer the last bug, Thout breathes a sigh of relief. He quickly looks around the room to make sure there is no immediate danger. Seeing none, he kneels beside Soros and pulls out his waterskin. "Little bugs. Can't have Soros die because of a bug. Can't take him back to Geolin like this," he worries as he acts, loosening Soros clothing, then dampening a cloth and wiping off his face, doing whatever he can to make him comfortable.

Heal: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 (help Soros recover)

Edan

Edan drops to one knee against the wall. Berna bless me! This hurts to all the heavens! The burning...it is unbearable! He shakes his head as if trying to cast out the pain. He lets his back slide down the dirty wall and he tries to control his breathing. Slowing his breath he takes a deep breath in and slowly releases it...at first the sound is loud but he quickly calms it to a whisper. He begins to say a calming prayer under his breath to Berna. He repeats it several times as he works to control the pain and settle his body.

He looks up and around and sees that only Soros is fallen and Thout is attempting to tend to him. Berna let this pass so I can help my friends.

Thout notices no real threat of danger. He does, however, see the hole by the door and the gore trail going under the sink where the centipedes came from. He is not sure how big the centipede pack is...

He inspects Soros and as he checks him he realizes he has some pretty bad bites all over his lower body. The bites are not lethal but some of them are pretty bad... The puncture marks are deep and the venom left a nasty purple black tinge to his skin. The bite on his ankle is rather bad as the mandible cut deeply into his flesh but it appears to be only a surface wound upon further inspection. In some spots, there are striations moving away from the bites purple and green in color. He is unconscious but you are unsure if it is from the poison in his body or from all the bites. He is nowhere near gaining consciousness. His face is puffy and there is a mild purple yellow tinge to his skin...probably from the poison in his body but it seems to be fading as you watch his breathing.

Naia gurgles spasmodically before shaking one leg uncontrollably. The light mace rolls from her hand and clonks onto the rotting floorboards. Eventually, she regains control of her body.

"Gah. What the hells!?!"

Gathering up the mace she uses it twohanded as a crutch to first crouch and then stand against the wall she lately slid down so unceremoniously. She casts a grim eye over Soros, and Thout's ministrations.

"Well Sor...you don't look so good. Edan - any way we can help him? Otherwise we hole up here for a while until he feels a bit...better." Naia looks again at Soros. "Though something tells me, without some fine healing poultice or mystic intervention, he's not going to look better for a while. Damn, but I wish Zove were here..."

He moves towards the sink as he nods to Thout and Rabalar.
Knowing that the creatures came out...he doubts that any form of trap would be placed on the sink, at least that is still of danger. He decided to not take the chance. Pulling forth a second dagger and uses it to open the cabinet doors. D'ogryn slowly follows the cabinet doors in hopes of finding any sign of a trap.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 = 10

Edan

Edan stands up as he again shakes his head as if to wave off the venom in his body. After a while, he can tell he feels much better but as he looks at the bites on his own body he can see that the bites have a purple and yellow, almost green tinge to them around the bite mark; venom of some sort...I can only imagine what our young friend is enduring...I was hit with three bites myself and my entire body feels like a hammer has beaten upon it. Young Soros was bitten many more times than me the bites alone have probably put him low. The poison should run its course in a short amount of time... He walks over to Thout's side to help him inspect the young man. He takes his time doing so and slowly inspects the wounds about Soro's lower body. He sees much of the same thing that Thout does and shakes his head. We will need to use healing magic to get him back on his feet I am afraid. He is out until his body recovers enough from all these bites he has received. Nasty little devils...bit him six times...I am not sure I could have stood up to that many bites myself. Thout, didn't you get a bag from the guards? Is there anything in it that can assist us? I have the ability to call for Berna to bless these wounds with minor healing magic but I am not sure we want to use it at the moment. These are not life-threatening and we very well may need that blessing if we come up against anything worse.

In his home language of Touv, he gives a blessing but the blessing seems longer than the times before. D'ogryn hears nothing but the wind and the light rain on the roof as wells the heavy breathing of everyone in the room. As he searches the area around the sink he doesn't see anything that looks like a trap or a hazard. Under the sink are several missing or rotted boards where the little critter went. Without light it is hard to tell if there is anything down there that would want to take a nibble out of you. You can hear skittering or shuffling but it is not near the hole as if it is further away.

Edan looks surprised for a moment. Ahh...you did do that. Let me grab it! He puts his staff against the wall and seems to swing around a few times until he finds it. Puts it on the floor and opens it up. He looks through it and at first, seems disheartened but he perks up after seeing something. He pulls out the normal array of bandages, gauze, herbs for reducing fever and infection as well as stopping the bleeding. Then pulls out five small vials that are marked in Keoish. He smiles and turns to Thout. Why your uncle is a wise old man! He hands you two of the vials. Help me prop his head up so we can get one or two of these down his throat and get him up and going.

Thout looks down at the vials written in Keoish on a small label is marked HEALING!. Thout recognizes the handwriting from when he was reading some of Geolin's reports.

Five vials of Cure Minor Wounds (1 HP). These were in the bag but no one ever bothered to inspect the bag to see what else was in it.

Rabalar helps Naia, he bandages the wounds with some of Naia's clothing and cleans the wounds up for Naia. He is as gentle as he can be with her but she has three bits and they are all rather nasty ones. Thout comes over and checks on him and Naia once they finish with Soros. You get a point of nonlethal per hour of rest, so if we let Naia, Rabalar, and Soros rest for that hour, can they get another point of nonlethal back?

Thout flexes his hand a few times, "Thank ye, Edan." He grips his axe, taking a couple test swings. "Feels much better." He smiles, "Yer a miracle worker."

Thout looks around the room assessing the state of the party. Soros is on his feet, but not in very good shape; everyone else looks manageable.

Thout approaches Naia. "Feelin' a bit better? Hate te ask this of ye, but there's a body in t'other room. Could you take a look and see if you recognize'm? I'll go with ye. 'Tis not an easy sight." Thout readies his shield and grabs his axe. He looks at Naia and shrugs his shoulders, "Just in case."

Did D'ogryn already get a look at the body? If so, did he recognize who it was?

Yes with the entire hour everyone would have recovered an additional point of NL.

As the party begins to relax a bit they realize the smell from the rotting corpse in the scullery has not faded. As Thout moves into the scullary Soros stands and begins moving around with a little limp in his step. Edan grabs his staff and checks on Rabalar and Naia once more and then checks down the hall for any movement. He spends several moments listening and then turns back to the room.

Thout doesn't see anything different or out of place from the last time he checked the corpse other than it is now more disgusting than the last time he checked it and there is a mess of innards surrounding the head.

Antas, Ferona, Peran - 4th Day of Readying, Godsday (worship day)
Late Afternoon

A few hours pass as the three of you talk and several of the tables make short conversations with you about your sea voyages. The groups more interested about the state of the seas from the Great Kingdom and the rumors being cast about of the state of the Aerdi empire. After a time a young minstrel plays on the stage singing light songs and telling uplifting stories. This continues for a time and is well received after a while he leaves the stage and a young lady sits with a harp and a boy, probably her brother, stands by her side with a flute. They begin to play light-hearted and relaxing songs. Music that is easy to converse to but soothing in the background.

Antas sees Warfa meet a beautiful woman in her early fifties or late forties. From the look of her, she is a priestess of Pelor but is wearing subtle garb that if one was not looking for the signs would not notice them. It seems she was being accompanied by a young male teen, probably an acolyte, who turns and leaves once Warfa receives her after a polite bow to his priestess. He escorts her upstairs and the women take his arm so that they can be closer. Antas notices they are talking to one another. A little latter Antas sees the young boy Parva go up the stairs and a moment latter Warfa comes back down and walks to the front entry hall. With him is a small group of people; at first, Antas thinks they are merchants but his eye catches things that point to something else. The female with him is a high elf and wears a symbol of Fharlanghn, a disk with a curved line, around her neck. She is a preistess as well from what Antas can tell and also dressed subtley. Many of th merchants stand up as she passes and greate her with smiles. She returns them in kind to those that talk to her and seems to allow for short conversation with each of those that introduce themselves. With her is a rather tall man, probably of Oeridian decent with some Flan blood as well. He is clearly a priest of Kord as he is in humble clothing and wearing a leather fighting girdle dyed red and leather boots dyed dark blue. The other man matches the height and stature of the first man and is clearly a priest of Phaulkon, another Suel god, and if Antas remembers his lectures he is the god of Air and Wind. He clearly of Suel descent but with a mix of Flan. The three meet Warfa and they shake his hand as he quickly bows. He gestures for them to move upstairs and escorts them up there. After some time passes and the barmaid makes her rounds to your table several times Warfa makes his way down the stairs. He walks to the bar, makes several rounds, seems to blend in with the crowd and comes to your table. "I hope the food and drink are to your liking? We aim to please our customers as best we can. Especially those traveling from afar....does Saltmarsh well to give a good impression of our service." He then leans over to grab your cups and empty platter and turns to Ferona. "Once I leave and continue to make my rounds you can make your way up the stairs. To your left is a small hall and at the end is a door. Give it knock and Parva will let you into the meeting hall. Hoskin asked to keep your meeting with him as quiet as possible. I don't always know his business but he must have a good reason for it. So don't be in a rush to go up there and don't make a big show of it." He gives Ferona a little wink and a smile stands up. "I will take care of this for you. I hope you enjoy the comfort of your rooms tonight at the Rest."

As Ferona digests the softly-spoken words from Warfa she cannot help but glance around her, wondering who else had taken an undue interest in their small party.

What sort of ruffians would be interested in US? I shudder to think who may bear us ill will.

Setting her wine glass down she gives Warfa a wide smile, trying to feign a slurred speech here. "Warfa, your service has been exceptional and I consider this place the highlight of my journey! I shall keep many fond memories of you and this fine Inn!" She then reaches for the glass feigning disappointment on seeing it empty. "Ahhh...perhaps it be time for me to retire to my room...once I finish off this bottle of wine!"

Bluff to pass secret message: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Sense Motive DC 9:
Ferona actually is far less drunk than she appears and wishes to take her leave to meet Parva in a few moments.

I rather like the fact she failed that poorly conceived attempt to pass a secret message here. It will give her incentive to take a Rank in Bluff...if we ever make 2nd level that is :P

Once the others at her table acknowledge her wishes she will lead them up the stairs stumbling slightly in her heeled boots. Once out of sight of the main floor and assuming no one is around she will stride purposefully down the left hallway and knocks sharply on the door at the end.

Male human (Oeridian) Cleric of St. Cuthbert;

Peran is somewhat concerned for their friend as it seemed she had too much to drink but soon realizes that this must be a ruse...and unfortunately a poor one.

"Here my lady, let me help you to the stairs.", Peran says in a horrible attempt of acting.

Once up the stairs, he starts to ask Ferona what the barkeep said, but she swiftly walks down the hallway to a door and knocks.

"So, a little rest and recovery time, then? Okay. Need anymore help tending injuries, or should I step into the hallway and take watch?" The question appears to have been more formality than anything else, as he doesn't wait for an answer before taking up a position to watch for anyone/anything coming after the group from the main hall . . ..

@AllenDM said that there were no pouches on his belt that we could see while he was face down, but what about now that he is face up?

Thout responds to Rabalar, "That's likely true. Wouldn't expect it te be so heavily trapped, but I did hear a thud right o'er us during the fight, like they were fortifyin' with furniture."

"Got a grapplin' 'ook and rope. Could try to climb in through a window, but they know we're here."

I do not see any more of those things under the sink but if I could get some light...I could see more of the hole. It appears to be a nest of some sort. Well maybe.

Edan

Edan finishes attending to his friends and on D'ogryn's request he moves over and puts the edge of his staff over D'ogryn's shoulder and near the hole so that he can peer into the hole.

There you go my friend...don't go putting your nose into that hole to far... You might come away with a nasty bite. He gives a low laugh.

He gives a look himself as well as he drops the head of the staff near the hole. I don't see anything down there but it smells horrible...but better than the smell in the scullery.

Antas will stand with his companions and take the ladies other arm his eyes a bit wide after seeing so many priests go up the stairs logging it all in his mind for later as he goes upstairs

Soros

Soros stands up as Edan moves off and Rabalar takes the doorway. I am fine...woozy and my arms and legs hurt but I think I will be fine. He looks around and picks up his staff waves his hand over the head of it as he chants something under his breath. As he does a reddish glow encircles the head of the staff and then it lights up like a small torch. There...a bit better now with more light to see. He sees all the dead bugs laying around and steps back away from them and makes a weird look. Have I mentioned I hate bugs now...disgusting things.

Thout reinspects the body more closely. Upon close inspection, he is Keolandish from his clothing and studded leather armor which appears to be finely made and is also Keolandish. His dagger scabbard is empty and he doesn't appear to have a pouch anywhere on his person but you can see were there are cut pouch cords hanging from his belt. The sword by his right hand is masterwork and is also Keolandish. The lantern near his left hand is cracked and broken. It also appears to have been stepped on as you can see a clear foot impression on the top side of the crumpled remains of it.

What size is the foot impression? Thout is wondering if this man was killed by the goblins, since they took his dagger, but left his sword. Of course, they may have just come by later and looted him. Just like Thout is about to do... LOL

Thout eyes the sword, wanting a closer look. It appears to be of good craftsmanship, but he wants that look to be sure. Guilt and awkwardness wash over him as he feels the urge to pick it up. He's never seen a humanoid corpse left out for so long and he feels a bit squeamish, plus the sword is still kind of his, or at least his heirs. He squats over the body for a minute just pondering. "Obviously, he's not using it anymore, and if we take it back with us, it may help identify him," Thout rationalizes to himself. But even with that rationale, he hesitates before finally picking it up and taking a closer look. Indeed, it looks nice, masterwork even. He should show Rabalar.

"Rabalar, look at dis sword. It's nice." He offers it to him for inspection. "There's a footprint in the lantern next to the poor fella. Could you take a look?"

Any ideas on how we should advance to the second floor?

The foot impression on the lantern is clearly not goblin...to large. If you compare it to yours it would be just smaller than yours...probably a human foot or olven foot.

Taking the blade to examine it, "Does look to be a nice blade. Wish we weren't probably going to need it." Keeping the blade in his drawing hand (for now), the olf moves over to look at the lantern and inspect the damage.

We'll see if I get anymore or not, but I wouldn't count on it.

Rabalar looks at the blade and can tell after a few moments of examining it. The blade is a Keoland longsword...a castle forged blade and of masterwork craftsmanship. You see the forge mark and you are not sure exactly where it is from in Keoland but the design and workmanship is Keoish.
