Ogre Battle: The Ovis Rebellion

The Island of Ovis is under brutal occupation by the Holy Lodissian Empire. While there was a time where there was some atonomy given to the rulers of the island, the chaos of the Shathar insident left the island in disarray and was ample justification for the Lodis empire to annex the entire island into their Empire. The order of the Sacred Flame, the militant branch of the Holy Lodissian Empire have brutally supressed the local religions and indotrinate the populace in worshiping their god Filarhh above all others. Other that this, the Lodissians are seeking to also destroy aspects of Ovis culture to better make the people of this island ideal citizens of the Empire. They have also lead a brutal campaign against the Demihumans of the isle slaying hawkmen, faries, mermaids and other creatures no matter their affliations.

Some however still seek to resist the Lodissian empire and liberate the island from their control. The Ovis Liberation Front is on the move and is looking to one day see Ovis free from the Lodissians and once again chose its own destiny in the world. Now destiny has called a chosen few to stand up for freedom. Will you be among their number?

Game Description:

This game is based in the world of the Ogre Battle series, some time after the events of the video games. It is a world with a lot of human drama and while there is monsters, angels, demons and demihumans, human conflict is the most prevalent aspect. As this is generally a human drama, player characters should consider playing humans. I may with a good backstory allow a Hawkman or a Mermaid in the game but I would rather have most, if not all the PC's in the game be human. There are no elves, dwarfs, halflings, gnomes and half-elves in this setting. Half-Orcs do exist in small numbers (as there is Orcs) but are not preferred as player characters.

For classes, all the Pathfinder Classes can be represented in this setting. There are also firearms (thus the Gunslinger class is allowed) but firearms rare and highly expensive. Most are imported and few have the means or the ability to craft them. For Wizards, most wizards of this world are either Generalists or adherents to one of the Elemental schools of magic although I will allow traditional schools as well. Witches are commonplace although somewhat distrusted as bewitchers and hurlers of curses. Sorcerers have a smaller list of bloodlines to chose from as there is not as many supernatural elements. The elemental, divine and infernal bloodlines are the most commonly seen, although undead bloodlines have come into being with the growing rise of undead and necromancy.

As for the Gods of this setting they are as follows:

Philaha: The High God, lord of Heaven father of the Gods. (Lawful Good)
Fellana: Goddess of Justice and mother of the Gods (Lawful Good)

From Philaha and Fellana came 7 Daughters who are:

Berthe: Goddess of Earth (Lawful Neutral)
Harnella: Goddess of Air (Chaotic Neutral)
Zoshonel: Goddess of Fire (Chaotic Neutral)
Gruza: Goddess of Water (Chaotic Neutral)
Lyuneram: Goddess of Ice (Lawful Neutral)
Nestharot: Goddess of Lighting (Lawful Neutral)
Ishtalle: Goddess of Light (Lawful Good)

The Dark Gods are:

Diablo: Dark God of Hell, lord of the ogres and known as the God of Destruction. (Chaotic Evil)
Asmodee: Dark God of the Netherworld associated with the element of Darkness (Lawful Evil)
Sentoul: Dark God of deception. (Neutral Evil)
Danika: Queen of the underworld (Lawful Evil)

Other Gods:

Fillarh: The Sun God. The God worshiped by the Holy Lodissian Empire and is seen as the only true God. His existence is in debated by non-Lodissians but he does grant spells to his worshipers although his philosophies are interpreted by the book of the prophet Lodis, who was said to a saint in his service. His alignment is unknown but Lawful Neutral seems to be the closest approximation. Some see him as good, others as evil.

Demigods of the wind (The 4 Sons of Harnella)
Euros (West Wind)
Zepyulos (East Wind)
Notos (South Wind)
Boreas (North Wind)

Character Creation:

Player Characters will be built with a 25 point buy, with an average number of Gold Pieces (Goth) for their class. You should play a human character unless you can come up with a good reason to play a demihuman race. I will come up with racial stats for that race if I am convinced to allow demihumans into the game. All players will start at level 1.

For traits, you may pick one trait from the Pathfinder list of traits.

For your other trait, roll 1d22 to figure out what your tarot aspect is. Every person of the world is born under the influence of one of the 22 Arcana. You will then answer a question based on that Tarot and will be given a powerful trait based on that answer. This could be a stat boost or a spell-like ability of some kind.

Do you allow anything from 3pp: Like SGG? Namely Dragonrider class?

Sovereign Court

Ah a Dragonrider Class. Well so happens there is a Dragon Tamer Class in the Ogre Battle World so it could work. There are numerous other classes from 3rd party content so I will allow or disallow based on the circumstances. For the Doll Master/Warlock class I might allow a variant of the "Mechamage" class from Thunderscape as they do have the ability to have Doll Golems under their control but also can use arcane magic.

Liberty's Edge

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

They have the Machinesmith class I believe on PFSRD, its a really neat class. Their Greatworks allows them to build a weapon, armor, a robotic automaton and a device that produces spell effects. It's for Neoexodus but it's a neat class. Though it can be underpowered at times. :/

I will have to look at thunderscapes and see what you are talking about~ :)

Thanks for letting me know quickly and I will get something presented to you tonight~ I am in alaska, have about 6 hours to go before I am off work~

Edit
Tarot Aspect - Moon?: 1d22 ⇒ 18

Grand Lodge

Presented for consideration, Ezekias Silverthane.

Tarot Aspect: 1d22 ⇒ 21

This sounds awesome. The character I'm presenting here needs to be redone completely but the theme of his back story will remain the same. I don't have time to work on it at the moment. I will try and have it done later tonight or sometime tomorrow.

tarot aspect: 1d22 ⇒ 17

Sovereign Court

Ok lets break down the tarot aspects as you got them.

First of all the cards are numbered 0 to 21, hence a d22

__
For an 18 you got:

The Moon Card

Card Effect: You can use the Darkvision spell 1/day. The caster level is equal to your character level.

Question

You are staring at the full moon the night before a battle. What are you thinking of?

1. The results of the battle
2. Your family
3. Your beautiful lover
___

For a 21 you got:

Judgement

Card Effect: You start with the Toughness feat as a bonus feat.

Question

Fate can be cruel. If you could only save one person from the flames of a battle, who would it be?

1. Your decrepit mother
2. Your beautiful lover
3. Your child

___

For 17 you get the Star

Card Effect: +1 Dexterity

Question

The night before a battle you see several falling stars heading for the east. What do you wish for?

1. Luck for your army
2. Bravery for your army
3. Victory for your army
__

Holy cow, I love those games. Heavily interested. Can I roll for the tarot card before makign the rest of the Pc?

Sovereign Court

Sure you can roll for a Tarot if you like.

3. Victory for my army

Did you come up with these questions yourself?

Tarot: 1d22 ⇒ 17

As in the games, I will let the Tarot and the answer to the question define my Pc.

Ezekias is torn. How can Fate be so cruel as to ask this question? You want an answer? Fine! I would save my mother.

Now go away. He needs to be alone for a while.

Sovereign Court

No, there is a list of questions Faulkner Barenlands

Anyway your secondary ability is this Faulkner Barenlands

Victorious Strike: You may once per day roll a single damage die twice and take the better result. This may only be done if the attack has the potential to drop a target to 0 or less hit points.

As for Ezekias Silverthane for saving your mother you will have this ability.

Defender of the weak: Once per day you may take the hit of an adjacent ally onto yourself. The attack is instead resolved as though the attack was made against you instead. You get a +2 circumstance bonus to your Armor Class against that attack. This only works for melee attacks, ranged attacks and touch attack spells not for area effects or spells that do not have to roll to hit.

He had no lover in which to pine.

His family was lost in the beginning of the brutal comflict, a part of himself died the night they left this mortal coil.

All he had now was to hope for the result of the battle.

Working out the character concept, Male Human Dragon Tamer 1 Thus far. Trying to pick a good name. May remake an old alias as I have several just sitting derelict lol.

Sovereign Court

For being a man of forsight towards battle, I shall give you this ability Corerue.

Tactical Foresight: You have a knack for battle strategy. Once per day you can grant an ally within earshot range a +2 bonus to their next attack roll or a +2 armor class against the next attack they receive as a swift action on your turn. This bonus lasts until it is used or the battle comes to an end.

Oh cool. I will give a reason for my answer in my background and also give reasons why I didn't pick the other 2.

Sovereign Court

Ok Nicos, you got the same tarot as Faulkner Barenlands. Here is what you get.

Card Effect: +1 Dexterity

Question

The night before a battle you see several falling stars heading for the east. What do you wish for?

1. Luck for your army
2. Bravery for your army
3. Victory for your army

Bravery.

Sczarni

are there any positions open left?
I would love to play a human ranger and this game is awesome for him
1d22 ⇒ 12

What are the domains of the gods?

Sovereign Court

Ok Nicos, here is your card ability

Courage of battle: Once per day you may reduce the effect of a fear related effect. Shaken is ignored completely and other fear effects are reduced by one step.

Ok Lord Pizzmic that roll gives you Justice as your card

Card Ability: You can cast Align Weapon once per day. This has a caster level equal to your class level.

You are standing in front of a mirror, which shows your best trait. What is shown in the mirror?

Physical strength
Mental strength
Moral strength

Sczarni

Moral strength

Sovereign Court

Here is a breakdown of domains for each god

Philaha: Good, Protection, Glory, Knowledge
Fellana: Good, Law, Nobility, Community

Berthe: Earth, Plant, Animal
Harnella: Air, Travel, Luck
Zoshonel: Fire, War, Strength
Gruza: Water, Charm, Liberation
Lyuneram (Changing to Lawful Neutral): Ice, Magic, Time
Nestharot (Changing to Chaotic Neutral): Weather, Chaos, Rage
Ishtalle: Good, Healing, Repose

Diablo: Evil, Chaos, Destruction, Death
Asmodee: Evil, Darkness, Void
Sentoul: Trickery

Sovereign Court

Ok for Moral Strength I shall give you the following.

Heart of Purity: Your moral code protects you from having your will twisted to evil. Once per day if you fail a saving through against a spell that twists your will (Such as Charm, Dominate or similar effects), you may re-roll the save to resist it.

Hmmm, interesting.

Tarot Roll: 1d22 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16

Went ahead and generated the 0 to 21 for you. :)

I haven't played the games, but it sounds like an interesting setup. Might be good to have a character that isn't familiar with what is going on. I'd almost want to play another recently awakened animal to be honest, one possibly inhabited by a spirit of justice, but not sure if that would fit with the world. Otherwise, a human (I so rarely play them). :)

What kind of action is this?

And this would be my character if the DM have no problem with it. (Still working on the details)

Sovereign Court

No action for Courage of battle. You just declare you're using it.

Sovereign Court

Ok 16 on the die roll is The Tower

Card Effect: +1 Constitution

In the country which you rule, a cult has started a rebellion. What do you do?

1. Send your followers
2. Send your army
3. Abdicate your throne

Liberty's Edge

Oh sounds fun Darkfire. :)

Character coming shortly!

There would be regional traits? I am interestend in taking extra trait for getting acrobatics and perception as class skills.

I would send my most loyal followers to attempt to nip this thing in the bud. Sending my army is just using them to kill my own subjects. That should be a last resort.

Sczarni

I would send followers to investigate the cult, assuming reports indicate they are up to no good i'd have to eradicate the cult in order to ensure the safety of my citizens.

Liberty's Edge

This is Lord Pizzmic's submission for the game.

Wes Craven has begun to grow weary of the monotonousness of his life, When he was a boy the hunt was new and exciting full of quest and adventure. But the dangers that he perceived as a youth have become boringly predictable as the years have slowly dragged on. He now seeks to give his sad existence propose looking into adventuring as his salvation from mediocrity.

Sovereign Court

As for regional traits just pick any trait you want from the pathfinder list to give yourself some unique background.

As for the tower selection of sending your followers, I will give you the following ability

Intelligence Gatherer: Once per day you may reroll a failed diplomacy or bluff check to gather information or coax information from a target. Alternatively you may use this to roll twice for a Knowledge (Local) check to know the local information of the region that you are in and pick the highest result.

It seems it will be a very martial focused group, nice.

Question - How open will the world/combat be? If I make a cavalier (lancer) will I be able to use my mount to the fullest?

Sovereign Court

A lot of battles will be done on the overworld rather than in dungeons in this setting. So a Cavalier does fit well into the setting. Your goal is not to delve dungeons but to overthrow the yoke of the Holy Lodissian Empire. While there may be some dungeon exploration to find lost relics or secrets, a lot of the game will involve fighting on the field of battle, attacking outposts, laying siege to castles or taking part in guerrilla warfare. You're not going to drive out the Lodissians in a straight fight, they're too well entrenched on the island. Despite suffering major setbacks in their attempts to conquer Valeria and Palatinus they still have a strong and powerful military as well as a good number of Clerics, Inquisitors, Dark Knights, Soldiers and the like. They do make use of Arcane casters to some extent as well.

Ok, background and appearance are done. I'll be working on all the other little bits when as i can.

DM, I envision my character as a light armored guy. Then medium and heavy armor proficiency will be a waste, can I chance those two feats for something lese (like Acrobatics as a class skill)

Haar Ramaloce

Personality:
At the age of 31 Haar is a tall and imposing figure on the battlefield. He had brown hair and blue eyes, at least for the one that was left. An eyepatch covers a scarr that marrs the left side of his face. He was usually clad in Leather Lamellar armor, with a greatblade strapped to his back and a longbow in his hands as he was an aarcher by trade.

Haar is serious and seems very cold , almost unwelcoming to those who do not know him. He genuinely cares for others and struggles to make that side of him to manifest, which at times he succeeds but he is unable to let go of what he lost.

Lin was the size of a small dog, around two feet in length and 8-10lb's with lustrous silver scales. The bright eyed dragon had small wings that somehow managed to keep it aloft and soft silver scales along it's sides and platinum colored scales along it's underbelly.

She is shy and curious, betraying just how young she was. She has a naive view of the world and is unaccustom to combat. With Haar's help however she is learning, as much as she dislikes having to hurt others she is starting to understand that she may have to.

History:
He was born a noble in the great kingdom, he grew into adulthood and was known as a honorable man. He married a beautiful girl named Jeana and she bore three children for him, two sons and one girl; their youngest. Even when the rebellion started he remained true to the empire and fought against the rebel's initially. Up until the day his superior officer branded him a traitor for his own gains.

Haar never believed that the charges would stick, but they did and his reputation was forever torn down. The charge fell upon his family as well and in a single night all save for himself were executed and his assests were seized by his accuser. The memory of his families lifeless bodies hanging from the ancient oak in their courtyard was forever burned into his memory. It was what drove him to survive. To get Revenge.

They stuck him in a cage and hung him in the blazing hot sun for days as an example of what the Empire does to traitors. He was so dehydrated and weakened that he would have surely died had rebel forces not come to free their brethren. From there he joined the Rebellion and sought only to find his former superior andkill him. The Rebels experianced some setbacks and it was during their most recent defeat when his band were routed. During their retreat his band prevented the enemy from crossing a bridge and fought to hold them as their leadership escaped the field.

He never saw the end of the battle, he faced a superior swordsmen and lost an eye before being driven over the edge and into the river below. It wasn't until a week later that he returned, somehow alive and not alone. A Silver Scaled dragon was coiled around his shoulders and he had a tattoo that danced just beneath his neckline as it were alive.

He doesn't speak of how he survived or where Lin came from no matter how much people ask. He was there to complete his revenge, except now he had something to protect. Which made him all the more dangerous...

Still working on his character sheet. Sorry for the wait. :(

Sovereign Court

Corerue Here!

@Darkfire: Are any traits not allowed? Like Rich Parents or etc?

Sovereign Court

I would not allow Rich Parents. I would allow you to be a member of the Nobility though as one of your traits. Many nobles have been deposed under the reign of Lodis and lost their lands and holdings. A number still hold their positions and are puppet rulers who suck up to Lodis and are willing to sell out the rebellion for their own gain. Indeed there are some citizens of Lodis that actually have come from Ovis. This is a very feudal world and there is a strong divide between the rulers and the ruled.

Masha, you technically fall under the "Swordmaster" class if you're playing a Samurai. I'ed allow you to trade off proficiency with medium and heavy armor for either an extra feat or two extra class skills. It sounds fair to me considering in Ogre Battle, Swordmasters generally wear light armor.

Just so you know, The Ogre Battle world is a bastardized combo of western and eastern cultures, so there is Oriental Classes side by side with Western Style classes.

Liberty's Edge

Appearance:
Wes is stocky fellow of about 5'6'' with a pronounced stomach acquired from to much ale. His weather-beaten face is dominated by a well manicured beard easily telling the story of a hard life on the trial. He wears Lamellar-leather armor under a brownish grey poncho that seems to be well worn and mended several times. He prefers to stalk his prey using traps to hinder and his crossbow to skillfully slay them from a distance, but takes no hesitation to draw his greatsword should the need arise.

History:
Wes Craven had a normal childhood, his parents were hard workers providing a loving environment that sculpted him into a upstanding young man. He took to the hunt at a young age and decided to make that his profession while fulfilling his unquenchable appetite for wanderlust. He traveled from town to town making money where he could; He often sold furs to local merchants but on occasion he would use his skills to track the runaway convict skipping bail. The occupation of the Lodissian Empire didn't concern him that much being he preferred making camp in the wilderness rather than with normal society. This indifference changed when he started to observe the mass genocide of the Demihuman races, much like himself many of these creatures kept to the wilds not engaging with the problems of man. But these intruders came into the woods hunting and systematically eradicating races for no discernible reason. He has begun to seek out the rebellion to give aid in any way he can.

@darkfire when do you intend on beginning the gameplay?

Sovereign Court

Well we have a good number of players although we have way too many Cavaliers. I don't mind having one normal cavalier, one swordmaster and one dragon tamer but I would like an Arcane and a Divine caster type to round out the group a bit. Your Ranger would be good for ranged and wilderness support though Wes, so you're in.

Liberty's Edge

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't mind changing to a wizard. How many cavaliers have been submitted?

I can change my lancer to something different. Are you allowing Psionics? If yes then I would like to submit a Psionic Warrior. If not then I will submit a cleric, not a battle cleric but a caster cleric, or a ranger. I really like the ranger class.

Edit - Psionic Warrior will be male, Half-giant if allowed. While the ranger will be a female, going for the Valkyrie theme ( lightning, spear, etc ).

Sovereign Court

No psionics, they don't exist in the Ogre Battle world. There are Giants in the world though but you can't be a 1/2 giant. The only Demihuman races i'm allowing are Winged Folk, Mermaids and Faeries.

As for Cavaliers we had like 3 submitted. One of them is a Sword Saint which works as there is a "Swordmaster" class (otherwise known as Samurai). We also have a potential Magus, which sort of falls under "Rune Fencer" class from Tactics Ogre.
