Meteor Strikes |

Our home has fallen to darkness.
You may recall it, a village of simple means and kind people. A place untouched by the evils of the world.
Doom comes to us all however. It has been ten years now since the shadows have taken hold of our lands. The forests wilt and rot, the sea cliffs are overcast by storms and gripped by the grimy claws of those from the depths. The moorlands and hills are rampant with bandits. The dead no longer remain as such. Our lord's manor house has fallen to fiends and eldritch abominations. Our goddess is gone. As you can see, light no longer shines in the Hollow.
I implore you family. Return to Raven's Hollow. Aid us in our hour of need. We beg of you.
Inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and the amazing video game Darkest Dungeon, Of Shadows Below will allow you to play as grim characters, aiding the forsaken environs of Raven's Hollow in ridding themselves of the horrors that surround it.
Character Creation and Progression
Each of your characters is a member of the Ravenholdt family line. Currently, the known NPC members of your family are:
Lord Aeneas Ravenholdt - Grandfather
Lady Ismene Ravenholdt - Grandmother
Lord Hierome Ravenholdt - Father
Lady Miriam Ravenholdt - Mother
Your characters may choose to be any of the following:
Great-Uncle/Great-Aunt. Your character must be of Venerable age and either Aeneas or Ismene is your sibling.
Uncle/Aunt. Your character must be of Old age and either Hierome or Miriam is your sibling.
Son/Daughter. Your character must be of Middle age and Hierome and Miriam are your parents.
Grandson/Granddaughter. Your character cannot be Middle age or older. You may design an NPC to be your parent (and that NPC is Hierome/Miriam's son or daughter). You may also choose to be the offspring of a PC if both of you agree.
Characters will begin at 1st level and should reach 6th-7th level by the end of their journey. I do enjoy trying Mythic rules, and players should prepare themselves to reach 1st and 2nd Mythic Tier near the end of their adventure.
- Characters should use 20 Point Buy when creating characters.
- Characters will have average gold at character creation.
- Characters will begin with two traits, which can be selected from the following list.
Traits:
- I will ask that Players limit their choices from: Core Rulebook, Advanced Player's Guide, Ultimate Combat, Ultimate Magic, Advanced Race Guide, Ultimate Equipment, Mythic Adventures, Occult Adventures. These are the books I physically own and allow me the greatest flexibility when designing.
- I will ask that players all be Human. However, I will permit them to select race-only options on a case by case basis.
- Domain using classes may select any two domains.
If you require any additional information, ask below.

Meteor Strikes |

If I had to describe Raven's Hollow, it would be as follows. (I will also add this description to the Campaign Info tab)
Raven's Hollow
Raven's Hollow is a lowland, valley basin surrounded by rugged, wooded foothills. Behind them soar steep mountains, raking at the sky. Long and sinuous, the Hollow stretches from north-east to south-west.
The north-western reaches, known as the Beak, consists of gentler terrain. Small woodland copses, failing farmlands and moors. Large swathes of water-meadow stretch near Sessley Lake. The small town of Ravenholdt is nestled not far from here.
As you progress in a south-easterly direction, the fields and hills gives way to a dark, imposing forest. As of recent years, the forest is plagued and blighted, giant vermin and fiendish flora living within.
Eventually, the forest gives way to the Plumes, a series of shattered sea-cliffs, crumbling away into the sea far below. Passages and tunnels riddle these cliffs, once mined by human hands, now haunted by unseen fiends.
The weather is cold, dark, damp and dreary. Rain is constant, the sun never shining past the cloud cover. Caught in a perpetual autumnal grasp, crops wither and grasp feebly for life. The temperature varies between 32 and 50 degrees. (Fahrenheit)
The Ravenholdt Family Line
The Ravenholdt Family have always led the people of Raven's Hollow. The town bears their name, and has done so for the past five centuries at least.
No one alive today accurately remembers the town's origin, but dusty tomes and the rare scholar still mentions the perilous flight from ancient lands, the fear when their ships ran aground on the rocks beneath the Plumes, the desperate pilgrimage across the valley, and finally the blood spilled erecting this new homestead atop the only sizable near-fertile region.
Since then, lives have been far from easy, but they have been simple and untouched by evils such as war, famine or murders.
The Ravenholdt family has always held these lands, and they always will. For the people trust them, and they protect their people in turn.
The current patriarch and matriarch of the Ravenholdt line are Hierome and Miriam. With their parents still among them, they lived within the Ravenholdt Manor atop Crone Hill not far from the town. Now, they dwell within their townhouse, their manor taken from them by horrific forces.
Currently, a number of Ravenholdt scions live abroad in other distant lands, but they are now finally returning from their travels.

Meteor Strikes |

This sounds like a fun campaign. So no Half-humans or otherwise part human races then?
I could be persuaded to allow one half-elf or tiefling character. Every other character should be human. This "bastard scion" would be flavored as follows:
While in the womb, strange, eldritch energies infused your body. Whether it was wild, primal energies (half-elf) or a taint from beyond this worldly realm (tiefling), your parents nevertheless made sure that you were still loved. You've always felt a little different however, and the lands of Raven's Hollow always felt slightly eerie for you. When you left with a few other scions years ago, you were slightly glad to be free of the whispers tugging at the back of your mind.
If you choose to be a tiefling, you freely gain the following trait, modeled after the one presented in Council of Thieves:
Profane Gift: Your heritage is a curse, given to you by proximity to... some unfathomable force. You are tainted, but not as completely as others. You lack a tiefling’s standard resistances to cold, electricity, and fire—instead, you merely have a +2 bonus on all saving throws made against these effects. Likewise, you do not have the ability to use darkness as a spell-like ability once per day—instead, you may choose any one 0-level spell that you can instead use at will as a spell-like ability.

Meteor Strikes |

Hummm, okay and what happened 10 years ago? Was it an outright invasion? Did things just seem to shift or was there a tipping point that was passed and the town is beginning its fall into darkness?
A progressive darkening. It began with the clouds obscuring the sun, then the constant rains. Soon, creatures began emerging from the wildlands, forcing the villagers ever nearer to their homes. Crops began to fail. Recently, the goddess of the land went quiet. And now, weeks ago, the Ravenholdt family had to flee their manorhouse as dark, shadowy terrors burst from beneath and claimed its grounds.

The Goblin |

First thoughts.
A young man who is a ranger. Much of his youth stolen by the coming darkness, the young man learned to hunt and survive being hunted. His favored enemy is undead, for they have in turn stalked him as he tried to bring meat to the village. He might be a bit resentful of family members who left town while he struggled to support his elders and keep the family together as the situation has become continually worse.
Great Uncle Ayerth, the Bastard half elf, who has returned to assist his half siblings, while they have grown old, his curse makes him merely middle aged.
A middle aged Cleric of life and death domains. That might sound like an odd pairing, but this cleric brings members into the community from their births and sees to them through life as well as assists those who have died pass on. Those who threaten the village can feel the wrath of the death domain in order to protect the lives of the townspeople. Undeath is an abomination to the circle of life the cleric serves.

Meteor Strikes |

I'm liking all of these suggestions. Still, a heads up that I'll only be selecting a single non-human character in the party of four.
I'm also very much a fan of the classic four, so I'll be aiming to have a balanced party composition.
I do very much enjoy the Cleric. I can try and fit in your ranger, though I planned for the adventure to be the "Return of the Scions". I can fit him in, I'll just need to tweak the introductory segment.
Can't wait to see your choice!

The Pale King |

I'm thinking an Uncle who is a 'bastard scion' half-elf. His unease in Raven's Hollow made leaving easy, but he couldn't just forget about his family. He became something of a family messenger, taking missives between other scions and occasionally back to Raven's Hollow. He has funcitoned in this role for decades as his cursed blood keeps him young and spry. I think it would be interesting if he was the one who delivered the missives asking for the scions to return, but alternatively he could be bitter that he wasn't called for this task. Either way he will of course take up arms himself to defend his family and their home, even if it doesn't feel like his.
Edit: Sorry Goblin! We basically had the same idea to have a Half-Elf who appears younger than his siblings.

Derz |

As an aside, since not everybody seems to know it: Darkest Dungeon is freaking bawss.
And I'm digging the idea of a Paladin. Lovecraftian settings can make for an interesting environment for a Paladin. But if you think that'll clash too much, I'm happy to play an inquisitor instead.something like "middle son went to join the church and had to rush back when everything went spooky" kind of thing.

The Dragon |

Where can I find the family traits? I'm currently thinking a son who grew up in the hollow, and has stayed there for most of his life. He takes time to talk to the locals, and is the general cut-out for a good nobleman, even if that also makes him seem a bit of a stick-in-the-mud to the others.
I was thinking LG fighter, with the Rich Parents trait and preferably the Well-Informed halfling racial trait, if that could be allowed. It fits really well with what I want him to be.

Answering some questions:
On the subject of scions remaining in Raven's Hollow, my objective is for these Scions to have been gone in the ten years prior to the current dark times. Their return should be grim as their homeland was far from its current state when they left.
As I mentioned I can be persuaded to have a single character be the "one who stayed behind", allowing for some roleplaying and most likely tension among the scions.
As well, I will only be selecting a single "nonhuman bastard" so if you wish to make one know that your selection chances may be reduced.
I also tend not to choose on a first come basis, but rather pick the characters I believe work well within the story.
As for LG Paladins, it's completely fine, and yes you may take Halfling traits. I mentioned that I would allow case-by-case racial options. Just ask and I'll usually say yes.
Also, don't forget to read everything on the recruitment page before posting. Make sure you're not stepping on each others toes too much and you haven't missed any crucial information.

Meteor Strikes |

Sounds good! Feel free to bounce some ideas off.
If you're curious, I can mention that enemies will range the gamut of foes, but you may see a higher than average number of undead, vermin, humanoids (human) and aberrations. Nevertheless, do not feel that these are the only foes this adventure has in store for you.
On the Subject of Levels
As you might have noticed, the adventure will finish off at 6th-7th level. This is as much a decision based on actually completing this adventure as it is an hommage to Darkest Dungeon once again (6th level characters are the highest level). To maintain this sense of threat, the citizenry will never reach a higher level than about 4-5. As such, the PCs will truly become "epic" heroes in their own right.
This "limit" is far from imposed on monsters however, and you can rest assured that even your 7th level/Mythic 2 characters will find challenging and fearsome threats.

The family traits can be easily found on the d20pfsrd.

I think the stuff's all here. I wanted to keep the background kind of light since I don't know what others are making and we're possibly going to be quite close to each other by necessity so I wanted to be flexible.
Looks good so far. I'm currently missing the following though:
- Feats
- Traits
- Gear (besides your greatsword and quarterstaff) What armor are you wearing for example?
And a light background is fine, I even don't really need one. Most of it will get finalized all together.

Gobo Horde |

I would be up for playing the old great-uncle, aging and eccentric yet still full of vigor and drive. He would be the older brother to Aeneas who struck out early on in life to make his fortunes (and why the estate was handed down to Aeneas instead of me), but he gave up most of his lofty position he had achieved for himself when his eccentricities got the better of him and he went on a few "adventurers" of his own in his old age.
Now he has come back to his old manor and found it in disarray and would most likely chide Aeneas for letting things slide as they have.
I am thinking of making him a gunslinger and have his rifle be his pride and joy, and something that he is constantly tinkering with and the focus of his eccentricities.
Could I take the Experimental Gunsmith archetype?
Also, I have to read up on the aging rules, see how badly the -dex and con will hit me :)
Edit: Wowzers! -6 to Str, Dex and Con is brutal! Even with all my points into dex along with my racial bonus and I could get at most 14 dex, and realistically only 12. I wont be hitting anything at that point, even targeting touch AC!
Any chance I could use Old age stats and still be the Great-Uncle and chalk it up to him being very spry for his age? Otherwise I might have to come up with something else entirely.

I can accept Old and yes, you may take Experimental Gunslinger. I believe I forgot to add Advanced Race Guide to the allowed books.

Let me introduce Randy Ravenholdt, son of Micah Ravenholdt and Rivan stonetree. He is 17 years old and has been trying to play the part of a hero. Last anyone heard from him, he was fighting bandits in the green-belt, trying to find some form of glory for his family
Edit:stat block is on the alias
Looking good. You're our second submitted fighter for now. Just giving you a heads up.
I'll crunch up the stats when I get the time.

The Goblin |

Would you consider in leu of a half elf, an elven child adopted by the Ravenholts. Saddened by the death of his adoptive parents, he leaves for 10 years seeking his roots. He returns to help his siblings, the oldest Ravenholts when he hears they have been driven from their home.
He would be a ranger but with suspicious and trap finder traits which would give him rogue abilities.

Sure. At this point we barely have enough characters to fill out a roster and I'd rather ease up on the restrictions than see this campaign not get off the ground.

The Dragon |

I'm currently debating two characters.
One is
Heiron is the sixteen year old son of Hierome and Miriam. For much of his childhood, he has been too small to really comprehend the changes going on around him, but now that he is practically an adult, he understands what he sees, and it worries him to no end.
He grew up in the Raven's Hollow, and has in fact only left it once, on a month-long trade mission to a nearby town. He feels a deep connection to the family legacy, to the Hollow itself and the people who live in it.
Although he'll do anything for the family and loves the Hollow, enroaching darkness and all, he can't help but wonder if they wouldn't be better off just evacuating the whole thing, and making for safety.
Besides taking an interest in the problems and goings-on of the area, Heiron spends most of his time training with weapons. He won't be caught unable to defend the land and the people he loves.
I actually really like that one. But then I went and read up on Darkest Dungeon, and I had an idea for this character:
Androma has always had a strange fascination with the occult. She eventually left the Hollow and joined the clergy of Pharasma. Androma thrived amongst them, and was fascinated with the lore imparted on her. She was especially interested in the transition between life and death, and what gave rise to death and the undead. In order to unveil what knowledge on the subject she could she has worked as a doctor, curing her patients when she can, and otherwise studying and recording their symptoms.
Now, ten years later, she is answering the call to return to her ancestral home.
Description: Androma is fairly good-looking: her fair skin contrast well with her dark curls, and her face is well-formed. Still, this is not usually apparent at first glance, because of the heavy doctor's clothing she wears, coupled with the beak-like mask and hood that serve to protect her from exposure to disease and alchemical fumes.

Family traits are here: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits/family-traits
The archetypes are fine, the tiger is a little bit out of place in this kind of place but sure.
There are no deities in this campaign but we can sort out the fluff when we get started.
As of now, I count two fighters, a paladin, a ranger and an oracle. We're definitely missing an arcanist of some sort but that's about it.
Once again, selection's this weekend.

The Archlich |

I got the tiger for two reasons: First, I think it's insanely cool, and second it's also very strong. If you prefer, I can change it to something else (like a wolf, maybe? You tell me. I wanted something exotic to meet the "awkward old man" thing hehe).
As for trait: I like the Family Trade on in the List of Traits - is anyone else going for it? We should coordinate the traits (since they give bonus depending of other people with the same trait). In my case, I was considering Family Trade for Acrobatics, Diplomacy, Perception or UMD. :)

I got the tiger for two reasons: First, I think it's insanely cool, and second it's also very strong. If you prefer, I can change it to something else (like a wolf, maybe? You tell me. I wanted something exotic to meet the "awkward old man" thing hehe).

By the way, I don't think the tiger can take power attack - it gained the feat at first level, when it only had BAB +0.

No, no the tiger's fine. But can you please verify the power attack choice?
