I've been wanting to take a dive into the PbP format for a while now, and it occurred to me today that a duet (one player, one GM) would be a great way to keep a story moving along at a quick pace without having to worry about keeping 5+ players all on track and working out schedules and conflicts and such. Ideally what I would love is to find someone interested in a reciprocal duet: where we each GM a campaign that the other is the only PC in. (Using gestalt rules, higher level character(s) than normal, multiple PCs under the control of one player, etc, depending upon personal preference.)
Campaigns which I would feel comfortable running in this format include (but are not necessarily limited to): Rise of the Runelords, Kingmaker, Jade Regent, Skull & Shackles, Shattered Star, Wrath of the Righteous, Giantslayer. Coincidentally, these are also the APs I would be most interested in playing in. (Addendum: I would love to run or play in a mix-and-match campaign that combined elements of multiple Varisian APs into an interesting new gestalt.)
I own all of the hardcover books and about two dozen additional splatbooks, in addition to the APs listed above. If anyone is interested, I would love to discuss this in greater detail.

My Eberron Rise of the Runelords was cast with six players, a lot of them thanks to this board. Had over 20 great applicants. :)

I occasionally do updated versions of the old TSR AD&D 2nd edition one-on-one modules like Fighter's Challenge. They're made specifically for that purpose, and some of them have reasonably decent story hooks. I was considering possibly running one on here in the near future.
HC Narrator |
Still accepting/needing applications for a halfling rogue type and a paladin (female Eberron-style shapeshifting changeling or male human for race) over in Homecoming. I can technically do without the rogue - the party doesn't have a trapfinder otherwise, though - but the paladin is rather story critical. C'mon down, take a look, throw up a background idea.
Your Benevolent Dictator |
I just opened RECRUITMENT for a "Way of the Wicked" campaign. If you're interested, head on over and be sure to mention you're from this thread. I'll definitely take that under consideration when making selections. :-)
Lurr Donsfell |
Just entered into the list for RotR.
It was a warm evening when Lurr heard noises outside the hovel she was allowed to rest in. She came out just in time to see a man on horseback clad in highly polished armor, adorned with streamers of brightly colored silk. In his hand was a long golden colored glaive, also adorned with the same bright ribbons. The man's companions were rounding up those in the camp that were not resisting, and laying down those who were. Lurr saw Donvul running toward the most beautiful creature she'd ever seen with the axe she had just finished sharpening before laying down to rest. The sight of her hideous master about to hurt this thing of beauty took over her actions. She grabbed a wooden stake that was holding up her masters tent, ripping it from the ground, and in the same action, hurling it at her masters legs, ropes still attached. Donvul crashed to the ground, axe flying in the air. He came to a dusty stop about 5 steps in front of Lurr. She pounced towards him, picking up his lost weapon, and in a flash of anger she hadn't felt before, brought the axe down on her master, removing his arm completely. She immediately realized what had happened, dropped the axe, and flashed her eyes around her. She brought her eyes around to the kngiht, who was looking into her eyes deeply. She fell to her knees near her former master's bleeding out body.
Four years later, she traveled to the city of Sandpoint to aid in the opening of the new cathedral being built there. She has spent the last few years in the tutelage of the priestesses and paladins at the Sanctuary of Shelyn in Korvosa. While she was fascinated by the beauty of the works of art and lovely music that filled the halls, she found that she could find just as much beauty among the craftsmen of the large city. She would spend days upon end working with some of the local craftsmen, aiding them in making whatever works of metal they were smithing show outwardly the beauty the metal had within. Nothing inspired her more than the ornate armor and glaives of the paladins that came to the temple.

I have a character concept that I would really like to play.
Player: I have played in multiple PbP games on another forum, so I am quite familiar with the medium. My priorities are roleplay and immersion. I enjoy it when the characters' actions have real consequences and when problems or encounters can be approached in multiple ways. I am not very good with optimizing characters, as I prefer playing an interesting character that is mechanically consistent with the concept.
I am currently running a live RotRL campaign with my friends.
Character: NG Female Human Oracle, Oradin or Orawitch focused on buffing, healing and diplomacy. She's all about non-violence and redemption over punishment. Former (or current) slave, taken from a nomadic Zenj tribe when she was a child. Gifted to a scholar a few years ago, so she has a smattering of education.
That morning Asha had gone to the temple in the poor quarter. She wasn't particularly religious, but for the past few years she had been struggling with questions she could not answer on her own, questions about the nature of good and of... less good. Over her short existence she had encountered people from all walks of life and all backgrounds; she knew that they came in all shapes. The rich merchant who liked to watch slaves whipped bloody, the baker's wife who gave away fresh loaves to the homeless poor, the noble who funded schools and hospitals, the cobbler who knifed his own brother over a stupid argument... It went on and on, with no discernible pattern. By this point Asha well knew that the capacity for both cruelty and kindness was found in all races and all peoples. But what shaped them? Was there a seed in each of them, growing into a beautiful flower, a poisonous weed and everything in between?
After the sermon she remained behind to converse with the priestess, who seemed a learned and kind woman. To Asha's disappointment, however, the priestess was mired in the teachings of her religion and could offer little more than quotes from the holy texts and assurances that sinners and virtuous alike would be "justly rewarded", although she was unwilling or unable to elaborate on that last point.
Just as she was preparing to say her farewells, a gaggle of small children burst into the temple's courtyard, screaming bloody murder. They started tugging at both Asha and the priestess, with shouts of "she's dying, please, she's dying, come, come!". Alarmed, Asha took off at a run, the children scampering ahead through the maze of alleys. Soon they reached their destination, but instead of a woman lying on a ground in a pool of blood, Asha saw a dog. As she knelt by the wounded animal, the tale rushed out of the kids in breathless fragments. The dog was their friend. Bigger kids. Stones. She has pups. They threw stones at her. The bigger kids, not them, they love this dog, this dog is their friend.
As Asha gently laid a hand on the heaving flank of the dog, the children trailed off and fell silent. "Upacaar karana" is heard into the silence and the dog spasms once and becomes still.
"Oh, no..." sighs a girl, tears swimming in her eyes.
As the other children start sniffling, the curled tail slaps the ground once, raising a small puff of dust. And again. And again, faster. The sobs turn into squeals of delight as the dog heaves to her feet and starts licking hands and faces. The pups are ferreted out of their hiding place and hugged, kissed and tickled into hysteria.
"They say you're so black because you come from hell, from the devil. But you're alright." And the boy pats her thigh with a magnanimity that would not have been out of place in the court of a king pardoning one of his subjects. And as the other children remember her presence and start thanking her, Asha uses the opportunity to do a little education.
"Now, remember. You saved her life, so now you're responsible for her. You will come here every day and feed her, won't you? And when the pups grow, you will find them loving homes, yes?" The children nod solemnly, their little faces suddenly serious. Satisfied, Asha pats the dog one last time and rises to leave.

I've got a character concept for a swashbuckler-techslinger that I'd like to play in an Iron Gods campaign. How's the interest-level for Iron Gods at the moment?
Haven't seen much IG interest on the boards, but anything's possible. You could always start an interest check thread.

I'm trying to persuade mate of mine to run this, but at the moment I'd say it's a 50-50 thing.
There was actually a vacancy in a game last week, but I only saw the thread after applications were closed. I don't think the games here generally have trouble filling up. It's more finding a GM who is willing to run it, and finding the players who will stick with it and post regularly.
Would you be interested in an IG game if there was one kicking off, or better yet running the table? =)

I'm already a player in a live IG game, so I'm out, sorry.
Úlfheðinn Sigmundarson |
Úlf has been added to the Jade Regent campaign tab; he was built using a 20 point buy but I am more than willing to adjust his stats if necessary. I've used him in another Jade Regent campaign before, but that ended a while back in a TPK and, being a fan of JR, I'd like to dust him off. Thanks for looking!

Just updated Stephven Burncrest on the spreadsheet. You can see his introduction here.

It does get used. You may not see the private messages going out. You may not see a DM making choices based on need, and posting a campaign recruitment because of that. There's a lot you don't see.
When I chose to run my Eberron RotRL AE game, I came here, looked around, and posted one post...to which one person responded with "here's why I didn't respond."
I eventually individually messaged every single person (I believe, if I missed you, sorry) who had characters up on the boards, or in the RotRL tab, inviting them to come check it out.
I ended up with 20 or so applicants. Some were from here. But many, many, many people chose not to respond, or responded with not interested.
Ulfric Bjarnasson |
Just put Ulfric Bjarnasson into the Any, Rise of the Runelord, Kingmaker and Carrion Crown Lists. I haven't done much PbP but I have been DMing for 2 years now and am trying to play more.
Ulfric is built on 20 point buy and has a Carrion Crown Campaign Trait that would need to change for other games.

Um...hello there. I'm actually looking to get out and do some field research to help improve my lectures at the academy where I teach. Does anyone have any advice on where I might go to learn about, and take part in, some interesting events? I already have extensive knowledge that could be of use to any adventurers!
Looking for advice on where this Archivist Bard (later MC into Tome Eater Occultist Archetype) might fit best in terms of APs. I've looked around a bit and I think MM might be good, but I'd love to hear your suggestions! Thanks!
DM Papa.DRB |
Hello All.
I am a DM, currently running three PbP on these boards, am considering running a fourth, and have a few questions, concerns(?) about this thread.
Concern:
The game I am considering is Legendary Planets by Legendary Games, and there is no "recruitment" page in the spreadsheet.
Questions:
What are folks expectations for posting here?
1) DM will come and post a recruitment thread link to tell folks what it is about?
2) DM will look at the spreadsheet and send PMs to folks requesting them to go to a recruitment thread after "updating" their character to the DM character creation rules?
3) DM will pick folks from the spreadsheet as they are posted, ie. no changes will be made to the character.
4) Something else?
Just trying to get a handle on what is expected. If I believe that option 99 is the "correct" one, then I don't want folks to get annoyed if that is not their expectation.

ps. I have been flip flopping every day or so on whether to run this campaign or not, so I won't post a recruitment thread till the "I want to run this" feeling is good for a week.
DM Papa.DRB |
Ah, I did look at the "Other" tab, but did not realize that there were APs listed to the right. I thought they would be listed on the vertical, not horizontal cells. However, alas, you are correct, there is no one listed under Legendary Planet.
Also, as a GM what are your expectations, if you don't mind answering, thanks.

Personally, I don't think you should ask people to update the character sheet to apply. It's inconsiderate. They KNOW how to make a character. We all do. Minor adjustments to a specific DM's requirements consist of "you get two traits in mine." Even if they require more, once chosen, a DM and player can make those adjustments. Point buy? Can be done later. House rules? Same. Alignment? You should be able to get an idea from a backstory, and can just say "everything but evil", or whatever you want. Equipment? Seriously doesn't matter when deciding a character to choose for your adventure. Feat selection? Are you planning on NOT choosing someone because of their feats? If so, have them list it (female gnome cavalier with improved initiative). Done. :)
What they need is story. You need to know "okay, this girl submitted an elf magus 1. Now...why do I want to pick her? Character concept and backstory."
That way, if 20 people apply, and you pick four, you don't force 16 people to waste time making it "perfectly your way". They just copy paste their backstory, add a tiny blurb on the stats (male dwarf artificer), and you make choices off that. You should get more applications, as no one has to spend an hour "re-doing" their character to your standards, until they know they've been chosen.
That's my two coppers. It's something of a bad habit that I think we've developed as a community, which lends to people's frustrations about not getting in campaigns. :)
Good luck!

Mummy's Mask is likely a good one.

My expectations are zero so any of the above are bonuses. I think 1 is fairly redundant since I can look at the forum as easily as this thread. If I had time to GM (which I might next year) I would message players that had put a decent effort into their charact asking them to apply but most use the spreadsheet as a first port of call for replacement characters.

My friends got me into pathfinder and absolutely fell in love with the game and the lore. Sadly I haven't gotten to play for a very long time. At this point I will literally play as ANYTHING as long as I get to play at all.
I'd love to play a Rise of the Runelords campaign if at all possible. I tried to GM one once but it didn't work out too well because all my players left, I was and still am a very inexperienced GM dealing with a power player lycanthrope. I was super lenient because I just wanted my players to have fun.
If you're recruiting or would like a co-GM, feel free to PM me.
