knowledge: 1d20 ⇒ 18 I would say this falls under trivial knowledge ... Callidus has a negative...

Balon rubs his chin in thought. "Mother protecting her child, eh? Makes sense, especially given what Patel told me. At least she's out of your hair now, eh?" he says with a grin, clapping the man on the shoulder in a friendly way. As he does so, he turns and acknowledges Amadeus' summons with a brief "just a minute" gesture.
He turns, and raises his voice to address the villagers in their dwellings. "Good people! We brave heroes have come to your aid in the nick of time AND at great personal risk to ourselves! Who will be the first to thank us properly?" he yells, holding one hand up and rubbing two fingers together.
I don't know if this applies or not, Aubster, just let me know. I'm going to try and expend Effort to make myself appear more...commanding, and heroic. Like a village-wide Diplomacy check or something. I'm trained in social interactions as well.
Just in case you need a roll: 1d20 ⇒ 20
The dice are hot, boys, the dice are hot! Doesn't a 20 mean I get to do a narrative intervention of my own, subject to DM approval?

A major effect happens when a player rolls a natural 20. Most of the time, a major effect is quite beneficial to the character. A climber gets up the steep slope in half the time. A jumper lands with such panache that those nearby are impressed and possibly intimidated. A defender makes a free attack on his foe. Either the GM or the player can come up with a possible major effect that fits the situation, but both must agree on what it should be. As with minor effects, don’t spend a lot of time agonizing over the details of a major effect. In cases where only success or failure matters, a major effect might offer the character a one-time asset (a modification of one step) to use the next time she attempts a similar action. When nothing else seems appropriate, the GM can simply grant the PC an additional action on her turn that same round.
Sure, go ahead a narrate away ;)
Balon Marr |
Let's see...
The villagers murmur among themselves at Balon's declaration and a few of the more enterprising ones form a huddle. The ladies of the village flutter their eyelashes at Balon, of course, but he's used to that.
Inside the huddle, the villagers murmur to each other. A few of them appear to argue briefly, but the argument seems fairly one-sided, with very few in opposition. They break the huddle and one of the elder ladies of the village approaches Balon.
"Away to the east, in the forest through which you came to get here, there is a shrine, left by our ancient forefathers. Magic suffuses this place, and provides blessings to those who pray for guidance there. Its location is a secret...but to thank you for saving us, we will tell you where it can be found, along with this small monetary reward." (each of us gets 10 shins)
This way, the form the "blessing" takes when we find this shrine can still be up to the DM. Sound fair?

I don't think Amadeus gets anything to affect his roll one way or another.
Knowledge: 1d20 ⇒ 9
Callidus, apologies, I'm atrocious with names.
That would indicate that the next person to talk to would be the mother. I'll wait to see how Balon handles things, we need to talk.

Sure, I can deal with a shrine. 10 shins per player is fine too.

Fpr the first time since you've seen him, Amadeus scowls slightly as if concentrating very hard.
[I]A beale? That would explain the hostility toward her, though I hope that girl is a better person than the tales would indicate. Regardless, we need to regroup before we decide our next move. Pool our resources.[/b]
Nano Callidus |
Callidus is almost finished with the repairs on his fried tech and begins paying more attention. While doing some more menial tasks like stripping wire he scrutinized the mother, Naedi ... "Beale's, interesting ... I guess I can probably blame them for my headache."
Balon Marr |
Balon smiles winningly and bows low, thanking the townsfolk for their generous reward.
He turns to his comrades. Spreading his arms wide, he asks, "Well, chaps? Want to investigate the...magic...of this shrine of theirs? No serious injuries on anyone, I trust?"
Repairs coming along, Callidus?
Aubster |
I'm going to assume that you all are in favor of moving to the shrine. If you still have things you want to do in the village you can always go back.
Following the directions given by the villagers you easily spot the path to their 'shrine'. As you approach, you see standing alone in a clearing a boxy structure made of some clear material. There is an open door that allows entry into the structur. Coming from an unseen source a golden light illuminates the interior. The interior of the structure appears large enough for a group of your size to fit in at the same time. In the middle of structure is a single bed that floats about 3 feet off the floor.
Balon Marr |
Balon's not one for thinking things all the way through. He prefers action.
Confidently, he strides into the structure and looks up. Anything decorating the interior or is it a plain room with a bed?

It appears to be a completely plain room with a floating bed that is lit with a golden glow. No buttons, no dials, no nothing.

Galahad will think on the mature of the shrine, seeing if he remembers anything similar.
1d20 numenera, trained.

Potential GM Intrusion; some complication to your action may arise via GM intrusion. You can accept the intrusion and gain 2 XP one of which you need to immediately give to another character (explaining why) or you can spend 1 XP and avoid the intrusion happening. The choice is yours...
If you accept the intrusion you all hear: "User identifying genetic sequence varies from authorized sequence. Activate L2 system function."
Aubster |
A fuzzy outline of a form materializes in the room next to the bed and quickly solidifies. The new addition to the room almost looks like a giant mechanical spider except each of the 'spiders' arms end in some sort of a tool. You can recognize a cutting instrument, an injecting device, and a spray device but the other tools are not items that you've seen before. In addition, the ’spider' floats a few feet off the floor (at bed level). The core of the machine contains a glowing red lens that quickly swivels to where Balon lies.
"Initiate genetic restructuring? Input required."
Aubster |
"L3 functionality query? L3 functionality standard #%^*€£#," the last word is just a very high pitched squeal. The 'spider' begins to rock back and forth a bit and raises its tool tipped appendages as it continues to look at Balon. It advances slightly closer.
"Initiate genetic restructuring? Input required."
Balon Marr |
Balon hrmms and gazes up at the advancing spider. "How attached am I to my current genetic configuration..." he murmurs to himself.
He shrugs. "I'll be curious the rest of my life if I don't!" he shoots a crazy grin at the others - Callidus recognizes the expression as what he commonly wears when he's about to do something he knows is probably stupid, but fun anyway.
"Numenera? Initiate genetic restructuring." he says, and climbs back up on the bed.

Please make a Numenera skill roll. You may apply effort (I) if you wish.

The ’spider' moves to the head of the bed and the lens in its head turns a bright green as hundreds of thin tendrils sprout from the central body and pierce Balon's flesh. A menu of options opens in Balon's mind but he is unable to make sense of the choices. A voice whispers directly in his brain, program initiating. Horrific pain shoots throughout Balon as the L2 program runs. For a couple of agonizing seconds what you all know as Balon ceases to exist and in its place is a mass of protoplasm. The protoplasm then rearranges back into the Balon you know with some slight but obvious differences. He now looks like he is related to the villagers that you just left.
Balon takes 4 damage to might.
Query...initiate L3?

Ah well. It's been fun guys! Guess I'm dead now probably :P
House rule - when rerolling, you get to use the higher score
Your six is actually equal to a 12 given one level of effort and one level of training so you don't get to die.
The machine's lens glows a bright gold infusing the entire room in even a brighter glow than it already had. The master machine realizing it is dealing with a user that is not skilled in understanding its machine language does not give Balon a menu of choices this time but instead defaults to the simplest of its possible options. The golden glow gets even stronger, dazzling your eyes. Once your vision returns you realize that the machine is gone and the golden light in the room is extinguished. However, you all feel completely rested and restored. Stat pools are returned to full strength for all characters.
