Awesome. That makes me 98% sure I need to plan a character.
Though not for We Be Goblins - I think playing the pre-generateds would be most appropriate for that, no?
The pre-gens included with the module are a lot of fun, but not strictly necessary. There are also only four, so if I end up with a group larger than four, some original characters will be necessary. Of course, since it's not intended that the same characters be used for both We Be Goblins! and Jade Regent, the pre-gen goblins are convenient as they're probably easier to abandon than ones you make yourselves.
Wander Weir |
Sometimes I look at the characters I play and think that goblins would be a step down in the wacky category.
Ha! I've got to admit, I'm really curious to see what you'd do with a goblin.
I'm not at all interested in either the Samurai or the Ninja but I'd like to see what options they have for the Monk in UC. Honestly, what intrigues me the most about Jade Regent is the overland travel. I kind of want to make a monk for the AP but in terms of the character, I'm especially interested in roleplaying someone who is literally going into a completely different world.
Also, neither of my offline groups have any interest in Jade Regent whatsoever, so pbp is the only option I've got.

Wander Weir, I see you've thrown Sarien into AK's recruitment thread. I do hope Freya wasn't on the Shiv with him. I think she'd make an even less pleasant castaway to be stuck on an island with than the not-yet-dried-out Aerys.
I did indeed. I've been wanting to play Sarien again and was just waiting for the right opportunity.
If Freya was shipwrecked on the Shiv too, I'd fully expect her to remain on the island and rule it with an iron fist.
Are you applying to AK's game? I saw a couple of questions but haven't seen an entry yet.

That would be fun. All bow before Freya the Cannibal Queen! Look upon her and despair!

I intend to, but I've started and abandoned at least 5 different characters; I can't find one with the right spark. Hopefully inspiration will strike before it's too late.

If you ever end up running Shackles and Skulls you ought to use her for a side-quest. That'd be fantastic.

Well, at least AK gives a lot of lead time for the applications. You've got the whole weekend to think about it. I actually had to discard a few characters myself along the way before finally going with Sarien (who took about five re-writes).

I'm not overly interested in samurai and ninja either, but I am interested in what Paizo does with the setting. And I do like the travel aspect and the idea of the characters entering a totally different world than they're used to. Although they've said that the AP will contain guidelines for including samurai, ninja, and other Tien PCs, they've also said that the default assumption is that the PCs are all natives of the Inner Sea region. My personal impressions (obviously, it's hard to say for sure, not having seen the AP yet!) are that it will work a lot better without PC smaurais and/or ninjas, and that's what I'd prefer my own group to be made up of (sorry Lorekeeper).
I also really like that the AP supposedly heavily emphasizes PC-NPC interaction. As is undoubtedly apparent in this game, I love playing up NPCs and making them very active characters in the game, not just people who stand around doing nothing until the PCs acknowledge them. I'm hoping for a great cast of NPCs in Jade Regent to play around with!

Monk. Screw all the other classes(what could contend with a Beast Totem Barabarian and a Two-Handed Fighter anyway), monk needs more cool stuff!
Also, Improved Initiative is becoming a strong contender for Makoa's 5th level feat... :(

Yeah, the PC-NPC interaction has been one of my favorite things about the game. It'll be great if they continue that with Jade Regent.
LoreKeeper |
From what I understand, Jade Regent includes rules for romantic engagement with the important NPCs. I heard James Jacobs mention that Jade Regent might be the NPC-interaction heaviest AP they've done to date.
@Navior: I am fine with no samurais and ninjas; but do you also disallow the mechanical class? I don't need to be a vassal of a foreign Tien potentate Samurai - simply a form of cavalier, that happens to follow the samurai mechanics. I'm not sure how the story ties in with Runelords, but the character could be a loyal retainer of Ameiko's, now doing kitchen duty (but secretly still charged with protecting his mistress).
Though no worries, there are tons of ideas that are worth pursuing. I've been playing with the most fickle of character concepts in my head; and maybe Jade Regent is the right playground for him. He's very focused on travel; though he's not necessarily easy to place into Sandpoint initially. I'll mull it over :)
Navior |
I'm probably fine with a character who is mechanically a samurai, but not actually called a samurai. It wouldn't be much different than being a barbarian class without being from a barbarian culture. I have not actually been following the samurai/ninja/gunslinger playtest, so I have no idea how much of the samurai social aspects are included in the class, but as it's really just an elaborate archetype of cavalier, I suspect it's mostly just order flavour (correct me if I'm wrong however).
James Jacobs mentioned on one of the various Jade Regent threads that it's a major and important aspect of the AP that Ameiko has no remaining retainers or servants, not even secret ones. He recommended that the GM not change this. He gave no indication exactly why this was important though, so we'll have to wait and see. :)
Wander Weir |
I saw James Jacob's comment about Ameiko not having any retainers or servants too. I think we're really just going to need to wait until the first book in the AP and player's guide are released. I remember a lot of people coming up with character ideas for Carrion Crown before the Player's Guide came out and having to redraft their entire ideas.
Having said that, I've been mulling over character possibilities for a while this week as well. :)
LoreKeeper |
Didn't know about the no-retainers; but still stand by the concept of a mechanical class. A Samurai primarily differs from a Cavalier in that the Samurai has some new orders to choose from, as well as that all "charge" related class abilities are replaced with "resolve" abilities. Resolve is a mechanic that lets the Samurai get better "lastability" (can activate resolve to get "die hard" effect, or an extra save, for example).
But as I said, I also have an "out-there" concept that might work well in Jade Regent. Will need to mull it over some :)

Hey Navior, if you do run Goblins/Jade, was wondering if I could get a shot at jumping in on these? Don't know if you are gonna go with this group or have an open casting call, but either way, I would love having at least the opportunity to take that shot.
No worries, though, if you run with this group and wish to keep it a five member team. I know six can be a stretch.
(I do think rolling with Reta the Goblin(I think that's her name?) would be a blast! 'A tendency to shout everything she says'. Man that just sounds like fun!) :)

I will probably go with a group of six for Jade Regent. For in-person groups, I generally find six people to be a bit much and prefer smaller groups of about four, but for pbp, six is quite manageable. I will give first consideration to people in this group and a few select others, of which I officially make you one! If fewer than six are interested, I'll do an open recruitment thread for the remaining spots.

Douena Initiative: 1d20 + 3
Lorenz Initiative: 1d20 + 4
Mahjik Initiative: 1d20 + 4
Makoa Initiative: 1d20 + 2
Urza Initiative: 1d20 + 7
Pezock Perception: 1d20 + 9
Ghouls Initiative: 1d20 + 2
Nylithati Initiative: 1d20 + 3
Order: Pezock, Mahjik, Nylithati, Lorenz, Ghouls, Douena, Urza, Makoa.
You know, Pezock got a Perception check there instead of an initiative roll. :)
Navior |
That's because for Pezock, perception and initiative are practically the same. He perceives and acts as one. :)
Yep! That's Pezock! :)
Navior wrote:"Yes, you will be the food!" Pezock yells.I'm suddenly no longer hungry...
That was my thought, too, as I wrote it. And I was actually eating breakfast at the time. :)

I'm glad that both of you are in this game. Lorenz is the straight man to Douena's zany antics. With Mahjik's 'wise man' sayings and Makoa's wild child, this is, character for character, the most entertaining group I'm in, table top or pbp. I even feel the loss of Aakif, the honorable horseman. Finally, a special mention for the DM. I will never be able to fathom how he keeps all of the npcs crazy in their own way and fun to roleplay with.
Wander Weir |
Yeah, I'm really pleased with how things worked out too. This is my first pbp game and I've enjoyed every second of it. Navior has exceeded my hopes as a DM and I'm very pleased to be playing with you fine people. I have absolutely no regrets.
As a wise man would probably say, when one door closes another one opens and sometimes the second door opens into a nicer room. :)

I think he is secretly a writer, and thus is use to keeping the personalities of several different characters constant.
I've got to agree with everything else you said to. +1 for this game in general.

Ohh! Maybe we're getting Dragonlanced. Everyone put on their best game face.

That makes me Raistlin and Makoa Caramon. I feel powerful and well protected. Should I start talking with a rasp and see everyone dying?

That can't be right. From what I understand, no one likes kender. And everyone loves Douena!

Bah! I like kender! Everyone else does too, they just haven't found the kender that will change their minds about the whole "racial kleptomania" thing yet!

Also, since it appears to be a shortbow, the crit modifier is x3, while Lorenz only seems to have rolled damage twice.
That's true. Was it really me who posted last night? Maybe that was one of the cats. Honestly, since I screwed up so badly last night, I don't mind losing my crit entirely. It's not like I did anything right to deserve it.
Actually, since the whole matter of the crit has come up, I'm totally old school and in every game I've ever played, we always just multiplied the damage rolled by whatever the crit modifier is.
Example: Roll 1d6 + 1 for a total of 4 * 3 = 12 or 4 * 2 = 8.
So in the future (rather optimistically assuming I'll ever actually roll another crit), should I be rolling it like this:
3d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 6, 2) + 3 = 13 --> (1d6 + 1) * 3 or 3 separate dice rolls, i.e.:
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
(for a total of 11 damage + whatever the original damage roll was)

The total number of dice rolls for a x3 crit should be 3, including the original, which is what you did in your post. You rolled damage once, then rolled an extra 2d6 for the critical damage. I think Dragonborn missed that there were two separate rolls in the same line. Whatever method you choose to make those rolls doesn't really bother me as long as the total dice is correct. The way you did it is actually a convenient way when you're not certain the crit will confirm, as it separates the base damage from the bonus damage (which might not get applied).

So don't feel so down on yourself. You didn't screw up that badly! Although you did make a mistake with your addition for the crit: 2, 6, and 5 should add to 13, not 12. :)
*laugh* Man, it hasn't been my week. Thanks, though! I thought I might have gotten it right the first time but my brain moves at a slower pace in the summer heat.

That I am. But it's been unusually hot and humid for us the last couple of days. You'd probably consider it to be rather cool but I'm made of northern folk.
Joana |
When I got married, we went to Banff in the Canadian Rockies for our honeymoon. It was August, and it was something like 86 F up there. Everywhere we went around town, the locals were complaining about the torrid heat wave, saying it hadn't been that hot up there in 20 years. We knew back home it was 108 F and just laughed.
Of course, living up north where 85 F is unheard of, virtually noplace has air conditioning, which does tend to make it uncomfortable inside.
Wander Weir |
Ha! I bet 86 F felt almost cool to you!
I grew up in the Rockies in Colorado and in the summers it rarely got over 74 F. I've lived in a lot hotter places since then but I've never gotten used to temps over 80 and I'm especially bothered by the humidity.
My wife and I dream of living in a place someday with central air. :)
108 F? Man, that'd kill me. The little town in Scotland I dream of moving to someday has summer highs of about 60 F. Now that's my kind of weather!

I live in the good ol' hot state of Texas. If it were 86; we'd be rejoicing. Rejoicing I say! :)

Then I suggest you NEVER move to Texas. It has been like 102 for the past week and a half. And I work outside. All. Dang. Day. Good times.
You get use to it, though. If it is one thing I do have as a feat, it's Endurance. I can handle the heat. But the ones that don't; tend to throw up, and have to find a new line of work. (True story, btw. The heat was too much for him. Just couldn't handle it. It happens.)
