The man shakes his head.

Sewers:

Gray shakes his head after the man does, clucking his tongue. "Look, we're trying to work with you, here, but you've got to give us something in return. A name, an address, where were we supposed to be delivered? Who were you supposed to turn us over to? My lady friend here is kind hearted...she has asked us to try the nice approach. For your sake, I suggest you open up a little, or I'll ask her to excuse herself so that we can delve into a different kind of questioning, if you understand my meaning." The inquisitor grinned amiably at the man, as though he hadn't just threatened him but instead was just offering two different alternatives. His eyes flicked to Ziera, her prompt to jump in and play 'good cop'.

Sewers:
What does it say exactly on the poster for Edmund?

sewers:

The portraits have no writing, just the picture.

i told you, we just had to capture you, and then someone else was gonna come take over.

AC 11 (T 11 FF 10); CMD: 15; Maximum HP: 42; Current HP: 42 F +6, R +6, W +9

Sewers:
Edmund looks over the picture, his ruddy smile still there. ”Tell me, young man. If all you knew about us was a bunch of pictures, and some written instructions to capture us, then...” he pauses as his face grows cold, ”how did you know to taunt me with books? That everything I know came from reading the books in my shop for the last 30 years?”

sewers:

The man scowls at Edmund and then firmly closes his mouth.

Map Female Aasimar Inactive

Sewers:

Seriously, friend, please. Just tell us what you are holding back. don't give him an excuse to torture you (she glances over at Gray with some fear in her eyes). Give us something to go on. It's an unfortunate situation that we all find ourselves in, but you made it out where your friends did not. Wouldn't you rather walk away from this intact and alive than meet that same fate? I can't protect you if you are still intent on getting us killed by withholding information.

That's a weird mix of Diplomacy, Intimidation, and Bluff. I'm going to roll all three and you can take your pick.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19
Intimidate: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (5) + 17 = 22
Bluff: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (8) + 20 = 28

Sewers:

That sounds most like diplomacy to me.

The man glares at Ziera. “Theyll live, as will i.

AC 11 (T 11 FF 10); CMD: 15; Maximum HP: 42; Current HP: 42 F +6, R +6, W +9

Sewers:
Edmund adopts a conversational tone. He isn’t very good at lying or intimidating people, so he adopts a familiar lecturing approach and simply gives the man facts as he knows them. Carefully selected facts, of course.”You know, there are many things to be learned from books, and I have read a lot of them. Do you know about physics, the study of how the natural world works? Very fascinating study. With it, I can learn about flow rate, as in how much sewage is flowing past your feet every second. I also learned about volume, as in how much sewage that magic pit I like to create can hold and how long it would take to fill up to a person’s neck. Of course, you’re tied down to a heavy rock with a short rope and can’t stand all the way up. Did you think I had my friend tie you up like that just to keep you from running away? Oh no no no.”

”I also learned about lemures from my books. Do you know about them? Often called the least of devil kind. You see, they’re what the souls of the damned become when those poor sods die in failure or filth. They’re the ultimate servant of the greater devil kind, the ones formed from the souls of evil men who didn’t die in a sewer at the hand of their own victims. They get used for all...sorts...of...things. So in a way, you’re correct. You probably will continue to live after we’re done with you, but unless you would like to become some barbed devil’s flesh toy for the next THOUSAND MILLENIA...you will answer our questions. Because otherwise, you’re going to die here, drowning in the discarded feces of peasants and stable boys!”

sewers:

Is the smaller text intentional, did you start whispering that? You probably also need a bluff check there.

AC 11 (T 11 FF 10); CMD: 15; Maximum HP: 42; Current HP: 42 F +6, R +6, W +9

Sewers:
Not sure why the text got smaller. I was trying to avoid needing a bluff check, unless it’s for the part where he says the guy would drown, since the pit wouldn’t fill enough with that flow rate to actually cover the man.Bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Map Female Aasimar Inactive

Sewer:

Ziera looks sadly at the man and shakes her head. Then she takes her canteen, and says

He's all yours Gray. I tried.

Bluff: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (14) + 20 = 34

She starts walking out of the sewer. If the bluff works and he calls her back or starts talking, she will return. If it doesn't, then she actually *will* give up, and goes out, cleaning herself with prestidigitation so no sewer smell remains. Then she just keeps watch on the street, not wanting to know what happens next.

HP 38/38 | AC 20 T 15 FF 15 | F +4 R +8 W +8 (+10 vs non-Zon Kuthon divine) | Perception +12 | Init +8

Sewers:

Gray grinned as Ziera started to walk away. He wasn't sure if she was still playing a part or sincere in leaving, but he played along just in case. He took out not his knife, but his chain, the tiny barbs protruding all along its length. "No, my friend, you won't. You'll scream for the pain to end, then I'll let my scholarly friend here have his way with you. Perhaps we'll even leave you down here, chained up, the raw sewage flowing into your multiple wounds. I'm sure the infections you would get would be painful as the disease ate you from the inside."

He peered down the way towards the elven woman, then back to the man. "Last chance to play nice..."

The total sewer floor is less than 10 feet wide, preventing a pit being created. I also found some other interesting reading on create pit idea.

sewer:

The man finally appears frightened. “The note had a few details on everyone. Like the Dragonborn would heal us after the fight. The man with glasses owned a lot of books and studied the magic within them.

AC 11 (T 11 FF 10); CMD: 15; Maximum HP: 42; Current HP: 42 F +6, R +6, W +9

Sewers:
”Why would you think the Dragonborn would heal you? That makes no sense.”

Sewers:

The man shrugs. “It just said fight hard, the Dragonborn would heal any injuries.

Sewers:

Ziera turns around and looks at the man. What other details?

She tries to see if he has really told them all that he knows yet.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

Sewers:
”It’s a pity you lacked the foresight to keep the note for your own protection, lest your employer turn on you. You could have corroborated all of this.”

He heads towards the ladder and whispers along the spell to Ziera, ”Suggest to him we have our friends asking his companion these same questions and that their stories had better line up.”

Sewers:

Black armor = Dante and Vince
Try to take out either of the men in black armor right away. Silence the area to inhibit the spell casters and the dwarf. Clear the area of others first. The samsaran will probably be in disguise. Put two on the elf.

Ziera:

He does seems to be spilling his guts now in an effort to avoid actually spilling his guts. And he seems sincere in what he is saying.

Map Female Aasimar Inactive

Sewers:

Ziera listens to Edmund and studies the prisoner, and says I'm convinced he is telling the truth. What I am not convinced of is what he will do if we let him go. She turns to the prisoner. So, friend, if we give you your life, please tell me what you are going to do with it... convince me, and my friends here that you will never be a danger to us again. I have an elixir of truth here. If you are willing to drink it voluntarily, affirm all that you've said, and guarantee that you will never be a danger to us again, through action or inaction, then we'll let you go.[b]

She looks at her companions. [b]Agreed? If they agree (with or without other requirements for what he needs to say), then she turns to him for his answer, and if he agrees to drink voluntarily, and say all that is required within the effective time of the spell, then she fully intends to let him go, so any sense motive on his part will show that she is being sincere.

HP 38/38 | AC 20 T 15 FF 15 | F +4 R +8 W +8 (+10 vs non-Zon Kuthon divine) | Perception +12 | Init +8

Sewers:

Gray stares at Ziera and the potion she holds for several long moments, clearly not wanting to let the man go. However, she seemed earnest and he could always disguise himself again, so he finally just shrugged. "Agreed."

He pulled the other two aside first, eyes narrowed, "What he said suggests that Tarken is a traitor, correct?"

Map Female Aasimar Inactive

Sewers:

Ziera whispers back Quite possibly, but even if this guy believes it, it is by no means certain. We should question Tarken as well. Perhaps after, or during the party? He did heal me, and others in our party.... But that might be what this guy was talking about with the "they will live" thing. Did he heal them all after we left, or even stabilize them during the fight without our knowledge, and they are already on the hunt again? We have no way of knowing that, yet, but we had best be wary.

AC 11 (T 11 FF 10); CMD: 15; Maximum HP: 42; Current HP: 42 F +6, R +6, W +9

Sewers:
”It is an oddly...specific...bit of deception if it isn’t true. If it is, then we should take advantage of it by spreading false information to our enemy, rather than just confronting him with the accusation. I did feel that there was a traitor, I just thought it was Antonio.”

Map Female Aasimar Inactive

Sewers:

Why Antonio? ... And there isn't any guarantee that there is only one traitor.

Gray just nodded at the others...it seemed like something they should talk about later. Right now they had business to attend to. He returned with the others to the captive's side, putting a hand on his shoulder as Ziera prepared to give him the potion she had indicated.

Waiting on his response before I do that... if he refuses to take it willingly, no need to waste a very expensive potion.

Not the Smelly Sewers:

After changing back, Antonio hastily stuffs his gear back into his bag. Dismissing his invisibility, he makes his way to Carew's in order to pick up his clothes for the ball. Afterwards, he roams the city asking for information on Dice Drem.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23

Sewers:

The man nods at Zieras request.

Not the sewers:

You ask around enough to find someone willing to talk about Dice. They are clear up front that it will cost you a drink (2 cp).

if you agree:

The man tells you that Dice is similar to the stereotype in many ways. He keeps himself isolated and focused on his research. Where most researchers in Leroung are just more interested in information that people, Dice seems to despise everyone. He used to be much more of a socialite, but several years ago he turned into just another recluse researcher. The man doesn’t seem to know what it is that Dice is studying though.

Sewers:

Ziera pulls up Detect Magic, gives him the potion, watches him drink it, and watches his aura to make sure he didn't resist it and that it is indeed affecting him. She then repeats all the questions they asked him before. Then she asks him whether he will betray them, whether he will be a danger to them in the future through action or inaction, if he knows of any other danger to them, and what he plans to do once he is free. She allows time for the guys to ask any questions of their own, but marks the time and watches the aura to make sure it is still working.

Note that the spell allows a fairly easy will save to not be compelled to tell the truth for each question while still being affected by the spell overall, however, it specifically says "if [the person] does answer, [the person] must tell the truth." So, Ziera will treat any silence as a lie. See below for the text about the item.

Elixir of Truth wrote:

This elixir forces the drinker to say nothing but the truth for 10 minutes (Will DC 13 negates). She must answer any questions put to her in that time, but with each question she can make a separate DC 13 Will save. If one of these secondary saves is successful, she doesn’t break free of the truth-compelling enchantment but also doesn’t have to answer that particular question (if she does answer, she must tell the truth). No more than one question can be asked each round. This is a mind-affecting compulsion enchantment.

Sewers:

As the man does as Ziera asked, then answers Edmund's questions, Gray casts a glance at the elven woman, arching a brow. He didn't necessarily like letting this loose end leave, but she seemed to be confident in whatever she had given him. Maybe she was bluffing. Oh well...it would just be one more body added to those trying to kill/detain them. Looking at both of his companions, he asked, "Are we done here? We've got places to be, and this place reeks of filth."

Map Female Aasimar Inactive

Sewers:

What does he say about putting us in danger in the future? I have zero interest in killing this man; I just want to make sure he isn't going to just run up and try to kill us again.

If the answers and explanations are all acceptable (including not endangering them or causing them to be endangered in the future), she lets the guy go, saying Run far and fast, friend. I don't plan to kill you later, but I can't guarantee the same of my friends.

She turns to Gray and says Agreed. Let's get far away from this place. She hefts the Haversack filled with loot from the battle and adds We should find a place where we can talk (without the stink), and perhaps a place where we can all meet after the ball, if those two things weren't already part of your list. Lead on.

She uses prestidigitation to clean everyone as they leave, so there is no tell-tale sign of where they have been, and she changes outfits and hair color and style again in the first alley they come to.

AC 11 (T 11 FF 10); CMD: 15; Maximum HP: 42; Current HP: 42 F +6, R +6, W +9

Sewers:
Edmund also uses magic to clean folks and change his appearance with his own hat of disguise several times on their journey.

Sewers:

He shrugs at Ziera comment about the future. “Work is work, i don’t get to choose what i take and what i reject. I do what is available. I won’t go after you of my own volition though, only as commanded.

Sewers:

If the guy isn't going to guarantee that he will never be a danger to them again, then why did he agree in the first place? That is what Ziera asked him before offering the potion. If he doesn't commit to leaving town or not being a danger in some other way, then she isn't guaranteeing his safety.

Instead of letting him go, she leaves him tied up, and says to Gray with a sigh, Yes, I suppose we're done. If he can't commit to our safety from him, we can't commit to his from us. What a waste of 500 gold to try to save a life. ... Meet you guys in the alley outside.

She leaves the sewer and waits in the alley, cleaning up and changing her outfit and hair, as noted above.

HP 38/38 | AC 20 T 15 FF 15 | F +4 R +8 W +8 (+10 vs non-Zon Kuthon divine) | Perception +12 | Init +8

Sewers:

Gray nodded his understanding to Ziera, waiting for the woman to leave the sewers before 'seeing to' their captive. He makes sure to commit the deed quickly, as he sensed that the pretty elven woman would only frown upon him taking his time. What a waste.

The inquisitor allowed Ziera to clean him and his outfit after they leave the sewers, then changes his appearance to a slightly different version of the handsome nobleman he had been when he had purchased his suit for the Ball. Well-groomed dark hair, bright blue eyes, the picture of aristocratic handsomeness. "If you two wish to talk we could find a random inn to speak in. Otherwise, I have to change before the event this evening."

This post negates Gray’s post

Sewers:

He basically thinks that since you didn’t walk away he’s now safe, even if he backs off his earlier statement. He’s trying to push what he can get away with and salvage some pride. As understand by his outburst now, his pride isnt worth his life.

The man blurts out as soon as Ziera turns. “Wait. I’ll agree. I don’t know how but I’ll make sure my crew doesn’t target you.

Sewers:

I think we can proceed by just redacting the portion where Gray 'took care' of him. The rest can stand, unless anyone objects.

Map Female Aasimar Inactive

Sewers:

Okay, then Ziera lets him go as she did in an earlier post, giving him the warning about running far and fast, and then all of the incidental conversation remains, and he is gone, and we are in new disguises above ground again, responding to Gray... correct?

We need to find a place for everyone to meet after the ball, and I thought you guys might want some of the gear from the fight. Should we find a random inn and wait there for you while you change?

HP 38/38 | AC 20 T 15 FF 15 | F +4 R +8 W +8 (+10 vs non-Zon Kuthon divine) | Perception +12 | Init +8

Sewers:

Gray thought a moment, then nodded his assent. "A random inn on another side of town. That sounds prudent. And if the inn doesn't seem compromised, we can send word to the others to meet there afterwards. If there's another attack there, we can be assured that one of us is a traitor. Maybe more, as was said."

Perfectly find with splitting loots, as well. I'll let Ziera and Edmund have their pick.

Hmmm... since the last one was the Asmodeus' Rest, why not make this one Abadar's Watch?

Map Female Aasimar Inactive

Random Inn:

... or the Tipsy Tavern, or Rest Inn Peace, or Innstigator, or Hathor's Haven...

Ziera asks to reserve a quiet back room for tonight, and then, once they are alone, pulls out the loot from the battle:

-masterwork bladed scarf
-light crossbow with 20 bolts,
-dagger
-Keen Mstwk Battleaxe
bracers of armor +1
-Circlet of Persuasion
-Incense of Meditation
-handy haversack
-Wand of Detect Magic (39 / 50 charges)
-Lacquered Wooden Medallion set with Carnelian (600 gp)
-2 potion of cure light wounds,
-2 scrolls of bull’s strength
-scroll of fog cloud
-scroll of floating disk
-scroll of protecting from
-Scroll of protection from law
-scroll of owl's wisdom
1025 gold

We left the swords behind for the staged battle, and 2 sets of armor and 2 swords went to the barkeep to pay for damages, so there are also 6 masterwork Full plates and 8 heavy steel shields, but not sure that we could have carried them (DM call).

She says that she would like the Circlet of Persuasion, but of course if someone else feels they can use it more effectively, she is willing to let them. The Haversack should probably go with whoever is going to carry the party's loot, but she's also very happy to allow someone else that privilege if they would like it.

Does the medallion do anything, or have a symbol on it that we might recognize, or is it just treasure? Also one of the scrolls says "protecting from"
but doesn't say from what. Do we know that, or should we just call it another protection from law?

Antonio, you aren't with us, but do you want some of this stuff (see spoiler)? We'll have to role play thinking you are a traitor for running out on us later, but definitely not trying to leave any player character out of claiming loot. If you want something, we'll figure out how to have it fall into your hands this evening.

Also, DM, do you want us to give the NPC characters a share of everything once we sell the stuff we don't need? Likely not counting Tarken since he is probably a traitor. Is that enough, or do you want us to reserve magic stuff for them as well?

Male Human NG Vigilante(Warlock) 7 | HP 56/56 | AC 18 T 13 FF 15 | Fort +6 Ref +10 Will +7 | CMB +4 CMD 17 | Init +4 Perc +7

I don't think I need any of the mundane loot, seeing as Antonio doesn't carry weapons in order to show some measure of trust. Haversack would be nice, but the real decision is the scrolls. Both me and Edmund can use them, and I would like to scribe the spells in my spellbook. At the current moment, however, Antonio doesn't have the time to. I think they should go to Edmund for the moment. Maybe a potion of CLW, just in case, but otherwise, the loot can be split among the three of you.

HP 38/38 | AC 20 T 15 FF 15 | F +4 R +8 W +8 (+10 vs non-Zon Kuthon divine) | Perception +12 | Init +8

Random Inn:

Gray acquires one of the potions of cure light, but is otherwise uninterested in the rest of the non-liquid assets they have acquired. He already has a Haversack, so graciously turns it down. Turning to the other two, "So, anything else to discuss before the party this evening? I feel we should draw out our traitor, but how do we best do so without tipping our hand?"

AC 11 (T 11 FF 10); CMD: 15; Maximum HP: 42; Current HP: 42 F +6, R +6, W +9

Edmund is happy to take the scrolls, and when they have time, any left over can go to Antonio to scribe.

Random inn:
”Assuming our event wants to take us out before the ball tonight, there is a means by which we could identify the traitor. One of us locate Tarkin and give him the name of one fake meeting place, while another find Antonio and give him a different. Then we surveil both places and see where the bad guys show up.”

Map Female Aasimar Inactive

The Random Inn:

Mmmm. I like your idea Edmund. It shows promise. How do we ensure that they don't talk to each other or to other members of the party, which we would have to inform about the real meeting place, though? Tell them last...?

Okay, for now, Ziera has everything not claimed, but I'm fine with what everyone has claimed... the stuff for Antonio should wait till we find out he is not a traitor though.
