Adherer- 21 damage
By the way, I didn't actually have to do any kind of deus ex machina reason for the adherer fleeing after all. According to his tactics, he flees when reduced to 10 or fewer HP, and G'nock's hit brought him to 9 HP.
Everyone gets an attack of opportunity (including G'nock if he uses one of his natural weapons), and then you guys are up in initiative as well. If the adherer survives the attacks of opportunity he will flee out into the courtyard as shown on the previous map.
Irakelesh |
"Ha! It's on the run now! Good job G'nock!" Irakelesh swings his torch at the fleeing creature but misses it.
torch@adherer,improvised weapon: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 2 - 4 = 13
Fitliss Phitzinger |
”Wait, where did that arrow come from?!” Fitliss yelps even as flails his torch at the adherer. ”I thought G’nock was the only one with a bow out!” To be clear, I understand that G’nock actually hit with his bow. Fitliss, does not. ;)
Torch: 1d20 + 4 - 4 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 4 - 4 + 2 = 171d2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 2 = 5
G'nock |
G'nock starts to reach out with a clawed hand, then hesitates ... he doesn't want to engage in a tug of war with a fleeing creature should he stick. He reaches into his quiver to retrieve another arrow, readying his next shot should the creature change its mind.
Ai'sha |
"You're not running away from us now!"

"Or maybe you are!"
GM Pendrak |
Though Fitliss is able to land a blow with his torch, the creature runs up the stairs and out into the courtyard and seems ready to run all the way to Thuvia to get away from the group.
Hoo, boy, glad that one is over. I assume you want to heal up, but then do you want to try to finish exploring the tomb?
Aliva Kulthane |
I think we are good to finish this up

"Well maybe the Priests outside will see it and destroy it for us." Aliva says.
Who has any magic left or healing magic?
Irakelesh |
I'm good healthwise but I'm low on Inspiration and only have two extracts left (shield, true strike). If we don't run into anything with nasty DR then I think I'll be ok.
Fitliss Phitzinger |
Fits can channel energy, has spells left, and can pass around life link to take advantage of self-healing cheese. Too busy to check which would be best suited rn though.
Fitliss Phitzinger |
Fitliss walls over to Ai'sha, the only other person who appears to be injured, and focuses on the wounds in his own body and around him for a moment, calling up his power with his wonder at the life around him. It builds for a moment, and then releases in a burst of healing energy.
Channel Energy: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (6, 5) + 1 = 12
”There you go Ai’sha!” the gnome exclaims cheerfully, no sign of the deep contemplation that just took place anywhere in his voice or manner.

Aliva scan the room for any magic and the gear they got while already at this place.
Since we never checked to see if the stuff we found under the sand was magical I don't think
Then Aliva presses towards the door to check it over after Fit's heals everyone

Irakelesh |
Irakelesh skips across the room behind Aliva. "Heidi Ho, let's go! I can't wait to investigate further on. I'm sure that ugly thing was the worst that there will be in here. Imagine what treasures and knowledge lie just beyond this venerable archway." Irakelesh makes a grand gesture at the opening he and Aliva are standing before.
"Just think, we are about to make the biggest discovery of the world. And all of you will be able to tell your grandkids one day of how you were with me when these things were discovered."

Aliva's cantrip reveals that the scale mail and light crossbow they found in the sand are magic items. She is able to identify the armor, but not the weapon. Fitliss and Ai'sha also try their hand at identifying the crossbow, but neither of them are able to figure out what it is exactly.
The armor is +1 scale mail, but nobody made the DC 18 Spellcraft to ID the crossbow. You can try again tomorrow.
There isn't actually a door leading out of this room, but just an open stairway leading down.
After giving the stairs a good look, the party proceeds down them.
But apparently they missed something, because as soon as Aliva reaches the bottom step, a nasty spear trap triggers! Spears stab out from all parts of the corridor, and only Ai'sha is lucky enough to be out of their reach. Everyone else is hurt fairly badly.
Aliva takes 6 damage, Fitliss takes 5, G'nock takes 5, and Irakelesh takes 10.
After that unfortunate circumstance, you do make your way into another chamber. The air in this chamber is cool. The walls and ceilings are tiled with stone, but the foor is hard-packed earth, giving the area an unfinished quality. A long stone table rests against the western wall, flanked by two large brass urns. A fight of steps ascends to the south, while two passages lead north and east out of the room.
Fitliss Phitzinger |
Fitliss will use channel energy again when we trigger the trap.
Channel Energy: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 4) + 1 = 10
That should leave everyone in the party at full. Fitliss has 1 spell and 2 channels left.
”Ooooh! Look at these urns!” Fitliss exclaims, hobbling over to the objects in question and studying them intently, without giving the rest of the room so much as a glance.
Irakelesh |
Irakelesh has trapfinding +1 so that gives him a +7 to spot traps. Can you automatically roll that in each room or do you want me to explicitly ask for it?
Irakelesh is about to respond to Ai'sha's mean spirited comment when countless spears stab out of the wall and into him. Holding his side, he stumbles into the chamber with the urns. He sags to the floor, panting and holding his breath to try to manage the pain.
It is only a few moments later, but it seems like forever, and Fitliss channels healing energy into him.
Irakelesh stands up and in a moment of seriousness he looks a Fitliss. "Thank you. Without your help here, we really would all be dead." The serious moment passes quickly when Fitliss runs to the urns.
Any knowledge I can do on this room or the urns?
GM Pendrak |
I'll keep trapfinding in mind in the future, though this time it would not have helped. There aren't really any Knowledge checks you can do here.
The brass urns are very large and heavy. Looking at the stone table, you think this likely served as a preparation chamber, where the body laid in state and was mummified before being placed in its tomb.
Aliva Kulthane |
Aliva groans as the spears hit in spots where her armor does not protect her.
"Maybe Irakelesh should be up front with me, looking for traps instead of me stepping on them."
Aliva keeps her Morning Star at the ready in case there are more enemies here. "So which way do we head now?"
Ai'sha |
Ai'sha facepalms as the group is about to leave the room.
"So...That thing just ran away...And it had my scimitar. So...Whoops?", she draws her shortbow before following the group.
GM Pendrak |
You walk out to the courtyard, and find that the adherer must have removed the weapons from himself before he fled, since both weapons are lying there in the sand.
Aliva Kulthane |
Aliva moves over and picks up her Morning Star, then hands Ai'Sha her Scimitar.
"Rather convient. Let us finish exploring this place then head back to the Tooth and Hooka for some rest." Aliva says
GM Pendrak |
No, it would need to be manually reset, it appears, as the spears are still sticking out in the hallway.
The group makes its way into the next room.
An earthy scent fills this large chamber. The ceiling and walls are tiled with stone, but the ground is bare earth. Benches are set against the east and west walls, and torch holders are mounted in the corners and on either side of a wide doorway to the west. The beginnings of several shallow, rough passages have been started along the eastern wall and in the southwest corner, but the excavations are incomplete, ending in earth and rubble after only a few feet. At the south end of the room, a short, wide flight of steps descends to a set of stone double doors.
However, as soon as you come into this room, there is movement from all corners. There seem to have been some mummified cats interred here, but as you enter they all leap up to form a swarm and charge forward with a hideous collective hissing.
The ancient Osiriani often killed and mummified the pet cats of the deceased to serve as guardians and sentries in the afterlife, according to their religion. Rarely, necromantic energies or the actions of malevolent magic-users can cause these mummified felines to animate into an ubashki swarm, what you now see before you. They are well known to spread disease.

GM Pendrak |
I'll say magic weapon still has another 30 seconds (5 rounds) left on it.
Ai'sha and Aliva slash and bash the undead cat swarm as it rushes over them, clawing and biting. They both destroy a few of the cats, but it is really difficult to do damage to the swarm because of the sheer number of creatures involved.
The ubashki only takes half damage from weapons since it is a swarm of tiny creatures. It is immune to any spell or effect that targets a specific number of creatures. It takes half again as much damage (+50%) from spells or effects that affect an area.

Just hanging back until the nauseated condition ends
GM Pendrak |
Aliva finishes the last of the swarm off with her morningstar, leaving a room full of smashed cat mummies.
Only one room remains in this crypt: the tomb itself. You carefully enter.
A stone sarcophagus rests atop a stone platform occupying the southern end of this room. The lid of the sarcophagus bears the likeness of a man and is inlaid with gemstones and trimmed in gold. Two lacquered benches run parallel to the east and west walls just north of the platform. Hieroglyphs line the walls of the chamber, and stone torch holders are set in all four corners.
The hieroglyphs on the walls tell the story of Pentheru the Younger in Ancient Osiriani, starting with the elevation of his father Pentheru the Elder to nobility, his subsequent death, and Pentheru the Younger's inheritance of his father's title and lands. The story boasts of their prosperity and success as land managers, the justness with which the family lived their lives, and the care with which they treated their slaves and servants. The text calls upon the gods to smile upon Pentheru the Younger and bless him with a good and just life in the Great Beyond.
Irakelesh |
Irakelesh looks around the room with interest. This is exactly why he came on this adventure. He wanted to see some of these ancient discoveries for himself.
"I can read it," he replies to Aliva. He starts walking around the room, pointing to various parts of the hieroglyphic display as he summarizes the story.
"See, here it talks about the Elder. He was raised to nobility and then died. Ah. And then his son, the Younger, took over. Hmm. Let's see. Oh. That's a lot. Ok. They were very wealthy, or it seems like it. Great with their land and they treated their slaves and servants well. That's nice. And this finishes with asking the gods to smile upon Pentheru the Younger."
He takes a moment to finish decipher the ancient writing. "So this is the tomb of Pentheru the Younger, I'm pretty sure. Apparently he was an upstanding guy."
GM Pendrak |
G'nock doesn't see any further traps either in the room or on the sarcophagus itself.
