Lothan will continue to follow the half-orc's lead, instinctually keeping an eye out.

You make your way into one of the two other rooms, where you discover yet more books and scrolls filling the shelves lining the walls. On the shelves, mixed among the manuals, are wooden cases of tools and various models of creatures and constructs.

Unfortunately, not only are there models of constructs, but four lifesize clockwork men move to attack as you enter! Each of the creatures pulls out a wand, and casts a spell from it. The first seems to speed each of their movements, but the next explodes a burst of fire over you! 18 hp fire, DC 14 Reflex save; Tristain and Starflit get +4 for cover. A moment later, the ground beneath Al, Kyffin and Lothan is covered in grease, and each struggles to keep their footing it's grease, DC 11 Reflex save or fall prone. Lastly, one blasts a ray from its wand toward Kyffin, who suddenly feels his limbs grow heavy you're exhausted, or only fatigued with a successful DC 14 Fortitude save.

Know (arcana) DC 19:

They're clockwork mages; constructs that are difficult to damage without adamantine weapons and resistant to magic, but vulnerable to electricity.

1d3 ⇒ 1

Grease: A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can't move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details). Creatures that do not move on their turn do not need to make this check and are not considered flat-footed.

Party is up.

Starflit scoots forward, activating her bane power against constructs. She moves through the area of grease and lets fly with her magical starknife!

Starflit Reflex Save (cover): 1d20 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 4 = 19

Starflit's Acrobatics modifier is +14, so she auto-succeeds on the check.

OK, I'm picturing a Peter Jackson's Legolas moment here for Starflit, possibly sliding through the grease area before using Startoss Shower to bounce her returning starknife clockwise at each of the four enemies, starting with the fellow in the SW corner. (Or maybe counter-clockwise, again depending on where she ends up after her move action.)

I'm not sure she can move that far in one action, though, as I'm not 100% sure where the door is. Also, I'm not sure all the clockwork mages count as being within 20 feet of one another. I'll make four attack rolls and let the GM decide if Startoss Shower is feasible; otherwise she'll use Startoss Comet to target two foes.

So much GD math....

First Target
Starflit +1 returning starknife (PBS, bane): 1d20 + 13 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 13 + 1 + 2 = 30 for magic, piercing damage (PBS, bane, +6 Startoss feats): 1d4 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 1 + 2 + (2, 5) + 6 = 23

Third Target
Starflit +1 returning starknife (PBS, bane): 1d20 + 13 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 13 + 1 + 2 = 26 for magic, piercing damage (PBS, bane, +6 Startoss feats): 1d4 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 + 2 + (5, 5) + 6 = 23

Fourth Target
Starflit +1 returning starknife (PBS, bane): 1d20 + 13 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 13 + 1 + 2 = 17 for magic, piercing damage (PBS, bane, +6 Startoss feats): 1d4 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 + 2 + (5, 6) + 6 = 26

Also, not sure in Point-Blank Shot applies beyond the first target. Fun! (Except for all the math.)

Al slides into the room, and just barely manages to hit one of the mages, though his sword seems to struggle to dent the tough construct. Starflit follows him into the room, her starknife whistling around the chamber to hit each of the constructs, though it bounces harmlessly off the final of the foursome.

As Kyffin closes in on the nearest one, Lothan shows his mettle -- adamantine, to be specific -- with a shot that slams into the farthest of the quartet. Unlike the others' weapons, the arrow sinks up to its fletching in the clockwork man. Finally, Tristain casts a spell, and you speed up to match your foes' quickness.

The red one steps back, followed a moment later by Kyffin. The close combat seems to change its plans, and instead of using the wand, it lashes out at the half-orc. He's able to fend off half of the blows, though, as it seems distracted by the change in its circumstances 17 hp total. Albert: 12
Lothan: 10
Kyffin: 6
Tristain: 6
Antagonist: 24

Starflit's weapon misses, though it rebounds to her hand as Al and Kyffin press their attack. The fog hampers Al a little -- he was sure he had the creature lined up for a perfect slice, only to hit nothing but air at one point -- but they manage to batter and smash two of the clockworks a bit.

As Tristain and Lothan wait in the fog outside -- which at least doesn't seem to be nauseating -- the mages slash at the three combatants remaining inside. The two in close combat with Al and Kyffin swipe furiously, though Al manages to avoid one blow thanks to the fog. 25 hp to Kyffin, 12 to Al

That's fine, Kyffin. We can certainly retcon in your step last round.

Round 4:

Starflit: 16
Albert: 12
Lothan: 10
Kyffin: 6
Tristain: 6
Antagonist: 24

Al and Starflit try to destroy the nearest mage, but between the fog and the speed they're moving with, have difficulty actually hitting it. Kyffin similarly strugles, though he manages to take a big chunk out of the one Al was previously attacking, which looks in bad shape that's aqua. Apparently done with their magic, the clockworks many arms reach out to scratch and gouge, ripping at your flesh. 25 to Kyffin, 29 to Star, 12 to Al

Outside the room, Tristain bravely keeps up the rear guard while Lothan tries in vain to pierce the fog. Unfortunately, he just can't see a thing through the mist and the web.

Starflit's blade seems to hit metal with no effect, once, twice, but then the third time she drives it home into the most battered clockwork's head, and it issues a few sparks before falling inert to the ground.

Al and Kyffin then focus on the remaining clockworks. Like Starflit, Kyffin has trouble connecting, but Al seems to have found his groove and casually slices off chunks of metal from the nearest. In a flash, it's disassembled, leaving just one to fight. That one manages to get in a few more blows on Kyffin before the three in the room are able to bring it down! 32 hp

Kyffin is breathing heavily as the battle finishes (Down to 3hp here…) but he does call out to Tristain, ”We’re fine, we made it through - they’re all done! Give us a minute.”

When that is done, and the group is together again, he says, ”Look. I think we need to fall back and regroup after a rest. Not sure there’s a good way to do that here, but we’ve got to try I think. Our foes down here have been considerable and, besides running out of spells, I’m hurting.”

Grinning, "Whatever works for the others, old man, works for me," he tells him. "I can keep moving if they want to and if they want to rest, I can do that too. No sweat off my nose either way," he says, shrugging.

In addition to books and tools, this collection contains a number of interesting, albeit bizarre, objects. Al's search doesn't come up with anything, but Lothan and Tristain can't help but notice a few things as they look around:

A leather satchel containing a hand of glory wearing a ring of maniacal devices, and a small serpentine statue of a six-headed medusa eating mouthfuls of crystal rats worth 1,000 gp, a stuffed dodo wearing a pair of leather boots of friendly terrain (desert), a withered bridal bouquet with a small black emerald on a long hatpin engraved with the words “Forever H. K.” worth 750 gp, and a scroll of hold person folded up in the shell of a dead tortoise at the back of a cupboard.

You can also make your way back up carefully to the hidden room that was mentioned when you entered, managing to make your way into it without running into anymore of the awful Leng hounds, and spending the night there resting.

Tristain doesn’t want any of the loot.

In the morning, and supposing that Lothan has both decided to help with keeping watch and decided not to murder us all in our sleep, Tristain will prepare for the day.

Tristain casts Life Bubble (about 2 hours each to everyone, read up, Heroism, False Life for 1d10 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17 temp hp, and See Invisibility on himself.

”I don’t suppose that fog has had a chance to dissipate, don’t you hope?” Tristain asks others as they prepare for the day.

Kyffin sleeps the sleep of the exhausted, glad for the break in the fighting. He’s not felt that poorly in a long time.

Much refreshed in the morning (1 con damage healed) he prays fervently for his spells. He’ll then do what he can for his strength damage before also casting Magic Vestment (+2 AC).
Lesser Restoration: 1d4 ⇒ 4 (all str damage healed)

Kyffin shakes his head, ”No, there’s bound to be the damn fog again. We’ll just have to take it slow.”

When the party is ready, he’ll draw his scimitar and descend back to where they were before. When the party is ready to head in a new direction, he’ll cast Bull's Strength.

Albert is just finishing his oatmeal when the rest of the party finally wakes up. "I never understand how you young folk sleep in so late. Let's get a move on, there's work to be done and we don't need to stay another night in this fancy kennel." As Kyffin leads the party to the unexplored areas, Albert protects the party's flank and watches for more hound and ghostly hand attacks.

With Lothan needing only a couple of hours of rest, he keeps watch for pretty much the entire night. "You tell 'em, Al. I swear, these 'young folk', what are you gonna do, right?" he gives a wink.

Lothan keeps in step behind the half-orc, nonchalantly keeping an eye out for everything.
