For the first time since you met her, Starflit awakens a bit on the grumpy side, shooting an occasional glare at both Al and Lothan. She nibbles on some rations before doing her morning stretching exercises. When those are done, she slips her mask and wig back on, again becoming the Black Butterfly's inquisitor.

"I hope Tenebrynn was able to keep Mun harmless overnight," she comments.

As you descend again to the third level, you again find the room full of fog. You again seem to find yourself turned around, time and time again, occasionally finding yourself back in the room with the ruined clockworks, and other various libraries. Finally, you find yourself somewhere new -- you think!

This side room is similar to those in other parts of the Mysterium—clogged with high, sagging shelves brimming with books, relics, and other arcane curiosities. Nearly all of the once-shelved books lie scattered across the floor in a haphazard mess. In the southeastern corner, the bloody cassock of a Steward elder is visible among a pile of destroyed books.

Also visible is a horrific ... what can only be described as a thing. Half-formed eyes, toothless mouths, gaping throats, and countless other malformed organs constantly form and dissolve over this monster’s surface. Albert and Staflit are the first to react as it starts to babble nonsense from its mouths.

Know (dungeoneering) DC 29:

You think it's a proto-shoggoth, an early attempts by the elder things to craft life that resulted in strange, heaving masses of protoplasm that displayed a disturbing hunger for living flesh. They spawn by infecting the bodies of other living creatures.

Lol!

Taken aback by the loon(I'd put wizard there but I have NO idea what class you really are. So I go with what you got in your status bar) ;), "A proto-shag-a-what?! What in the Nine Hells does that thing do?! How do we kill it?! And stop bonking your head you... you...," he pauses, cutting his vision over at Starflit, Oh alright for crying out loud, and rolls his eyes and sighs before, "human person... you! Maybe if you bonk your head against that thing, you'd kill it! Gotta admit, it's worth a shot!" he says facetiously, although, maybe not.

Tristain, you think it's going to be very difficult to hurt -- weapons won't work well (DR 5/—), and probably not most magic (SR) or even various energies (immune to cold and sonic, and a bunch of other resistances). It doesn't seem to have much of a mind to speak of, either. It can constrict things it grabs, and let loose a distracting cacophony that can stagger you. You would guess, one on one, in about 12 seconds, more or less.

Starflit casts a spell (communal protection from evil) moments after invoking two judgments (protection and purity). Then she scoots forward to engage the monster, touching each of her allies as she goes.

2-minute during for each PC for communal protection from evil; we'll give the extra minute to Kyffin, since he usually takes the lead.

Rules about multiple targets with touch spells are kinda vague and wonky; hope what I did is OK. Starflit will move to the square above the monster token's NW quadrant if she'll fit there; otherwise she'll move to the one below its SW quadrant.

Also, a quick reminder about Starflit's Liberation domain power that will kick in when the monster tries to put the squeeze on her.

Round 1/2:

Lothan: 13*
Tristain: 10*
Kyffin: 9*
Starflit: 22
Albert: 17
Antagonist: 13

Starflit casts protective magics on everyone as Al moves in, slashing. His blade slices through the thing, twice cutting deep gouges, though the wounds seem to fill in quickly two hits; plus it has DR AND is healing.

It begins to babble incoherently as it lashes out at both Starflit and Al, tentacles slamming painfully into them 34 hp to Al, 21 to Flit! The ooze seems to slide off Starflit, but Al isn't as lucky, and it wraps around him and begins squeezing another 18 hp.

Mechanics:

Party is up. Everyone must succeed at a DC 18 Will save or be staggered for 1 round. A creature that successfully saves cannot be affected by this proto-shoggoth’s distracting cacophony again for 24 hours. This is a sonic mind-affecting effect.

Starflit concentrates a moment, focusing on the will of her goddess--her will to avoid being grabbed and crushed! Activate Freedom's Call; will let it linger each round 'til this thing's dead. This would be her Round 2 Action.

The inquisitor brings her enchanted starknife to bear on the mass of ickyness twice, but does little to no damage to it. "What manner of creature is this?" she yells in growing terror to Tristain. "Not an aberration, apparently!"

Despite not realizing it was an ooze, the combined attacks of the group splatter the monster across the room, rendering it nothing but a disgusting mass. The end of the fight gives you time to recover, and investigate the room's southeastern corner, where the bloody cassock of a Steward elder is visible among a pile of destroyed books. Moving some of the books reveals the body of a man who matches the description of Elder Lythiin.

Although mangled, Lythiin’s body still has his gear: +2 chainmail, a ring of protection +3, a pale sapphire ring of feather falling, a leather-and-iron necklace of adaptation, a rod of escape, and a potion of gaseous form.

He's annoyed though, 'cause that gear, sold, would go a long way to that suit of armor he desperately needs. Still, he's managed so far, and will continue to do so.

Descending down the wings and backs of the angels carved into the walls within the third angelic gate, you find yourselves in a curious chamber a little over thirty feet to a side. Instead of normal walls, hundreds of statues of angelic beings, many bearing spears and other weapons and others wearing two-colored masks, make up the walls of this chamber. The uneven floor is formed from carved faces. At the heart of the room is a single object supported by a quartet of stone hands -- a peculiar, slightly rusted iron cube about a foot square.

The figures that make up the walls here are carved in such a way that they look like they are in motion when viewed out of the corner of the eye. The sculptures appear unnervingly realistic, with dynamic poses that make it seem like they could step out of the wall at any point.

Perception DC 35:

Hidden among the carved angels is a single statue without eyes. At the back of each socket is a tiny brass switch.

This iron box features symbols and images representing creation and destruction on its sides, and has a series of movable, concentric rings on the top bearing smaller symbols that correlate to the images on the sides. The symbols are sometimes sigils, sometimes words in different languages, and at other times simply images that represent things such as serpents, phoenixes, bolts of lightning, an infant, laborers building a structure, warfare, a flowing river, a scouring wind, a blazing fire, moldering fungi, and fruiting plants.

DC 15 Linguistics or Intelligence check:

You recognize the sigils as symbols of creation and destruction. You further realize that there is a correct sequence in which the rings must be set in order to open the Key to the Soul.

To solve the puzzle box, you must align the rings on the top to the correlating images of creation and destruction on opposite sides of the box. This requires three successful DC 25 Intelligence checks (or three successful DC 35 Disable Device checks). Each check takes 1 minute, and the check can be retried with a cumulative +1 bonus each time to a maximum of +5, after which the puzzle box resets and reduces any such bonus to +0. Though it’s normally not possible, a PC can aid another on this Intelligence check, but a single character must attempt the Disable Device check.
