Agreed.
Oh, incidentally ..
I ran this adventure for table-top players a couple weeks ago. 2nd-level through 4th-level, they decided to play "up". The first place they went after getting Jenk's instructions was the temple of Besmara.
At the high sub-tier, the critters are 4 <url="http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/magical-beasts/b unyip">bunyips</url>, rather than 3 reefclaws. I had the party fight only three of them, with the fourth hiding in the bottom of the pool as a surprise. No need. The party had no cleric, so no way to effectively deal with 1d6 bleed damage every round.
They just pulled their dead and fallen comrades away, having exhausted their resources, and returned to Magnimar in shame on the next boat.
Thought you'd want to know.

Sounds like a mismatch of capabilities, though. If they'd had a decent healer they might have done better. It's one more piece of evidence for the designer looking at CR and not at monster capabilities. (Not that I should complain; at one point I threw a seugathi at a party of five 4th level characters. I expected it to be a tough fight--not quite CR+2, with the fifth character--but if you're not ready for it the aura on the thing will wipe out a party. On top of its fast healing, DR, poison, weapon use....)

I'm back. Grave apologies for the delay.
While I was at Winter War, a burglar broke into my apartment and stole my computer.
(I can post short forum posts at work, but laying out the scenario book, a spreadsheet with everybody's stats, etc, would be abusive of the work office environment.)
Yesterday, i received a call from the IC police, and this morning, I have my computer back.
Now let's go kick some cultist butt.

Hi All
I am in the SH*T storm to end all SH*T storms at work and will be on a considerable amount of business travel and round the clock meetings.
I'll post as often as I can but it may take 1-2 delay days for combat responses etc. IF the game is bogged on me, the GM (or any player the GM deputises) is fine to make attack actions for me.
Again, not abandoning the game but but will need just a bit of patience on everyones part.

Trust me, I'm pulling out all the stops. Unfortunately, at this level, there aren't many to pull.
Quick suggestion to everyone though, try not to take this construct head on. We need to stick and move as much as possible. Don't give it a chance to get a full attack on you if you can help it. Also, putting stuff in it's way, like 15 bunk beds (heh), might slow it down might give us the chance to recover and let the gunslingers chip away at it from range.
Last note, to the writer of this module: whaaa?

Another good question, Max.
The ioun torch uses continual flame, which is a 2nd-level spell. Darkness is also a 2nd-level spell. So there's an overlap in the spells' area. However, the spell description for darkness reads: "Magical light sources only increase the light level in an area if they are of a higher spell level than darkness."
So, if you were to cast continual flameon the same object that holds the darkness spell, it would cancel the darkness effect. And you could cast continual flame to counter someone casting darkness. But just bringing continual flame into an area of darkness won't have any effect. You'll need daylight.

Alrighty guys, for e record this is the hardest dang first level adventure I've ever seen!

Great job on fighting like the Aspis out there though ;Þ
I'm currently pondering how to best not get myself killed after waking up in a dark pile of sewage next to a enemy, with my sword no where to be found, and it's dark.

![]() |

Hmm, you have a point. With divine favor and courage that bite would average around 8 points of damage.
Hey, I have another question for the GM. Is this the regular darkness or deeper darkness? Because regular only drops light by one degree, and if this place is lit by torches (which are two degrees) those with low-light vision still might be able see something.
I'm grasping at straws here, but the only trick left in my arsenal is a rules lawyer. :)

Well here goes!

Is the thing even scratched yet, DM? We're just about done here, lol!

For the record, I have a tanglefoot bag you can pull off my corpse and throw at it as a last resort.

![]() |

Tanglefoot? Hmm.. probably should have used that on it, though it might be too strong to be affected.
About damage - don't forget Chun crit the thing right off the bat for 21 points of damage. That had to have left a mark.

"Well my friends..." Maximo coughs blood, staggering against the wall. "I fear I cannot make it to one of the temples for help. This may be..." *cough* "the end.."
"Oppara!" He sings weakly. "The guilded city!"
"Oppara!" *coughcoughcough* "So.. glorious.." He slumps to a seated position, bleary eyes looking far away.
"Oppara!" From somewhere he has produced a bottle of wine, which he raises in a toast, a tear in his eye. "Such... beauty.."Taking a drink, he leans back and closes his eyes...
Bravo, bravo. Encore. *clap clap clap*
