Quick question: If Asheranthi or Grobly took a level of Ranger at 4th level and then picked the Shapeshifting Hunter feat with their free 4th level feat, would they get full ranger favored enemy progression off their druid levels?

Based on RAW, it seems so. It is weird with Gestalt, You are effectively 4th level, but only first with the dip but it would pop to equal 4th because of druid 4 I guess. They wouldn't stack to 5 of course.

I don't see why not using the normal retraining rules.

You would retrain the original feat taken, but yes. It does require the retrain rules which also require time/money.

I am working on my level up, which is complicated by trying to determine and plan for the future.

Since Lump is small, i think Swashbuckler (Mouser archetype) will be good for him.

that said, I need to make my Mandolin a piercing weapon somehow, instead of bludgeoning. Any ideas, GM? Otherwise several of the Swashbuckler class abilities will not work for him.

Weapon Versatility might work. Not sure how you have your mandolin set up as a weapon.

M Grippli river battle MAP Brd/Clr/UCRog(Spy)5/Swb(Mouser)~1 ||| HP: 61/61 | AC: 21, T: 17, FF: 15 | Fort: +8*, Ref: +11*, Will: +11* | BAB +3, CMB: +9, CMD: 19 | Init: +6, Perception: +14

Good idea. It is an improvised weapon, which by definition are almost exclusively bludgeoning except in rare cases like a broken beer bottle.

The problem is that weapon versatility requires weapon focus and weapon focus requires proficiency.

There doesn't seem to be a way to be "proficient" with an improvised weapon.

yeah, closest i have to that is Catch Off-Guard which all but says I am proficient, in that i do not suffer penalties for being non-proficient. still, would require GM ruling.

Have you designated your mandolin a 'weapon' or a 'magic' signature item, as per the rules I have so far?

Also, I might be tweaking these somewhat to make them a little more flexible and easily understood.

Lump wrote:

That will complicate things as it isn't even a weapon, you are just clubbing people with it in a tight situation.

M Grippli river battle MAP Brd/Clr/UCRog(Spy)5/Swb(Mouser)~1 ||| HP: 61/61 | AC: 21, T: 17, FF: 15 | Fort: +8*, Ref: +11*, Will: +11* | BAB +3, CMB: +9, CMD: 19 | Init: +6, Perception: +14

Hmm, but if it were to be designated as a weapon item it would possibly be able to be piercing?

Yes, if you met the other criteria ( such as weapon focus to take versatility etc). I think as I revamp the magic item rules, people will possibly be able to add magical abilities to weapons as well, and I may do away with the category of weapon vs not-weapon item, if that helps you plan. I need to make some calculations and I am not totally decided yet, but I think I might tweak it based on some confusion and possible imbalances. Not 100% sure yet.

Hmm, could i retro-actively switch it over to a weapon? I haven't actually even used the feat i attached to it as a magic item.

Probably. I want to revamp the system so I will let everyone rework their items anyhow. Very few people have spent much anyhow so far.

M Grippli river battle MAP Brd/Clr/UCRog(Spy)5/Swb(Mouser)~1 ||| HP: 61/61 | AC: 21, T: 17, FF: 15 | Fort: +8*, Ref: +11*, Will: +11* | BAB +3, CMB: +9, CMD: 19 | Init: +6, Perception: +14

Should we hold off on leveling until the magic item thing gets sorted out?

No, because I am not sure how long it will take me to change it. I assume the feat selection will change your leveling choices though, I will probably allow a feat change though if I make some adjustments.

M Grippli river battle MAP Brd/Clr/UCRog(Spy)5/Swb(Mouser)~1 ||| HP: 61/61 | AC: 21, T: 17, FF: 15 | Fort: +8*, Ref: +11*, Will: +11* | BAB +3, CMB: +9, CMD: 19 | Init: +6, Perception: +14

OK so, would you allow me to change the designation of my item and the feat attached to it to a "Weapon" designation, so that i could thereby make it do piercing damage so as to better interact with the Swashbuckler(Mouser)'s abilities for my cheese dip level?

Yeah, i 'think' I will allow that. In the current system it wouldnt work, but as I revamp it I will tweak classification of items.

Working on Lump now. I didn't go with the Weapon Versatility (piercing) yet since he will start with 6 Panache per day, and he only uses Panache in melee combat which is a backup measure, so not recovering Panache is not as big of a deal as it would otherwise be.

Instead I will be taking Channel Ray (can heal someone with a use of Channel Energy at a range equal to 30ft per Channel die (60ft at the moment, 90ft next level). Not the greatest, but still good if someone goes down but not totally dead while too far away for my froggy legs to carry me to them in time. Also gonna take Spellsong for my mandolin, letting me use rounds of performance to either conceal spellcasting or to maintain concentration for me (allowing use of another spell while concentrating).

with an enemy that is medium or larger, i can actually get in their space and i then count as flanking if i am both in their space and adjacent to an ally, and the ally counts as flanking too. so that helps.

i can now also heal-laser a few times a day.

and i got a few new things to do with my rounds of performance. thinking of working my way into some illusion stuff along with healing and buffs. my only real offense is smacking people with my instrument and psychotropic frog debuffs.
