Trem Kiran |
Hoping to do better, Trem tries again to use his healing on the skeleton.
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 DC 15 for half if it hit.
Skivven Kraskarras |
Skivven continues to dodge the skeletons' attacks. "Hey, raggedy bones! I'm still here! Yikes!"
Total defense again.
Once Valeria takes a swing he will duck and dart behind the skeleton.
Delaying the rest of my action. After Valeria attacks, if the skeleton between us is still alive I will 5' step to the northwest (which will give Trem a flank if he makes a 5' step). If the skeleton is down, I will 5' step east so I am immediately south of the other skeleton.
If neither of those options are possible I will post something else.
Harrash |
Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 2 = 11
+2 flank
Harrash moves to the next skeleton and swings his sword at it, taking advantage of his position next to Valeria and Trem, but he doesn't seem to hit it.
Sorry, I waited for Valeria and then missed that it was my turn.
Matt Adams 259 |
Arrenopos cracks the collarbone of the undead he's fighting, but otherwise is unable to hurt it. Meanwhile, the skeleton surrounded by the rest of the party, dodges both Trem's healing hand and Harrash's blade.
The monster attacking Arrenopos again lashes out with its sharp, bony fingers.
Claw 1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Claw 2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Claw 3: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Claw 4: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
He is able to block most of the attacks, but one of the claws overwhelms his defense.
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Luckily, it leaves only a shallow scratch.
Go ahead Valeria.
Valeria Starr |
Valeria lunges with her sword but she grimaces with disgust as the blade passes through the creature's chest cavity, barely leaving a mark on tthe bones.
Attack roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

Looks like my figure got moved 1 square north instead of northwest. Valeria should have had a +2 for flanking. However, after I move, the space Trem could have moved to to get a flank is now occupied by Harrash.
I have moved my figure to the correct spot.
Matt Adams 259 |
Either way, her blade didn't get past the damage reduction.
Skeleton 2 makes an attack against each of the people surrounding it.
Claw vs Skivven: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

While Skivven dodges another swipe and Harrash blocks the blow with his shield, Valeria and Trem are struck by the attacks aimed at them.

Damage vs Valeria: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Skeleton 3 Claw: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Skeleton 4 Claw: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Skelton 5 moves into Arrenopos field of vision and up to threaten him, but does not make any attacks.
Skivven, Harrash, Arrenopos, and Trem can go.
Harrash |
Harrash attacks the second skeleton who had tried to hurt him. He only gets nowhere near the skeleton, and only barely misses his nearby allies.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 5 + 2 = 8
Trem Kiran |
"For undead creature, these things are quite fast." Trem uses positive energy again, this time with better result.
Touch, Healing Hex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15 Will DC 15 for half if it hit.
CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
If it was a hit.
Trem takes a step back. "That is all I can do against this one."
Arrenopos |
Seeing the other approaching skeleton, Arrenopos tries to finish off the one in front of him.

Skivven Kraskarras |
Nobody has used knowledge (religion) to identify the DR of these creatures, right? Are skeletons considered "common"? I don't have any ranks in it, but if so the DC might be 10 or less, and I might be able to make an untrained check:
knowledge (religion) untrained: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Matt Adams 259 |
Arrenopos decapitates one of the skeletons attacking him.
Knowing that animated dead are a possible threat in mysterious underground ruins, Skivven had brushed up on common forms of undeath. He learned that skeletons are vulnerable to bludgeoning weapons that are well built to crush and smash the bones, but cutting and piercing weapons do not fair as well against them. Also, they are completely immune to cold based attacks.
DR 5/bludgeoning and Immune cold
Skivven Kraskarras |
Continue with full defense (I don't have a blunt weapon). Then a 5' step.
Skivven tries to talk while dodging the claws of the skeletons.
"Guys! The edges and points don't work... Whoops! ...Use something blunt! You need to crack the bones!"
Skivven darts between two skeletons to get on the other side of the skeleton Valeria is fighting.
If I am not allowed to move normally between two creatures that are adjacent diagonally I will use acrobatics:
acrobatics: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Valeria: You are now flanking. And IIRC I think you have a club you can use...
Valeria Starr |
Heeding Skivven's advice Valeria drops her sword and draws the club from her belt. Using the distraction provided by the ratfolk she attacks.
Attack roll: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 2 = 13
damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Skeleton 2 dodges Valeria's attack. It responds by swiping and slashing at everyone around it. It swings twice at Valeria, as she is the most wounded.

Claw 2 vs Valeria: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Claw vs Skivven: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Claw vs Harrash: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
None of the blows get through the party's armor.
Skeleton 3 moves just north of Valeria and Skivven. It claws at both of them twice.
Claw 1 vs Valeria: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Claw 2 vs Valeria: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Claw 1 vs Skivven: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Claw 2 vs Skivven: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Valeria's armor protects her from the attacks while Skivven makes the best use of his excellent reflexes.
Skeleton 4 attacks Skivven with all of its arms.
Claw 1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Claw 2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Claw 3: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Claw 4: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Refusing to strike back, Skivven is spending all of his concentration to block and dodge the undead assault.
Skeleton 5 full attacks Arrenopos.
Claw 1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Claw 2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Claw 3: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Claw 4: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Arrenopos is fully protected by his armor.
Everyone can go.
Skivven Kraskarras |
Arrenopos looks askance at Skivven.
"Not really an option here." He says as he keeps hold of his sword.
FYI you can use the flat of your sword to do bludgeoning damage as an improvised weapon, with a -4 to hit. Debatable if the to-hit penalty is worth it.
Arrenopos |

Yep, too big a hit at this level. I will probably take the Weapon Versatility feat later.
Trem Kiran |
Seeing Arrenopos all alone and injured, Trem rush by his side to use some healing on him. "Nnent Vhaantss" He also wave at him to take a flanking position. With his dagger, Trem knew he could do much damage, but the Skeleton didn't know that.
Healing Hex: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Will DC 14 for half damage
Lacking any other weapon, Harrash takes a cue from Trem and tries to bombard the undead with positive energy.
Skivven Kraskarras |
Skivven continues to evade the skeletons. Still going total defense and providing flanks.
"Come on, you've almost got it!"
Skivven will Ready an action to go after the skeleton between him and Valeria drops - it might be dead from Harrash's attack), or after Valeria's attack.
The Readied Action will be to move 10' north, through the space of the skeleton to my north to continue to provide flanks.
Acrobatics to tumble (readied): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24 ... hopefully that will do it.
Arrenopos |
AS the healing energy washes over him, Arrenopos breathes a sigh of relief. A brief nod of thanks towards Trem as he concentrates on the second skeleton.
Arrenopos steps over to a flanking position and attacks.
attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
The dice are with me in this battle :)
Valeria Starr |
Valeria continues to swing her club at the skeleton between her and skivven, to no avail.

Claw 3: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Claw 4: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Valeria is able to dodge and parry the blows while Skivven is busy avoiding all the attacks aimed at him. One of them gets close, but his armor protects from any harm.
Everyone go

Trem circles back behind the enemy to give a flanking opportunity to Harrash.

Harrash tries once again to hit the undead with positive energy.
"It's working, but I can't keep this up for long!" Harrash tells the rest of the group.
Harrash has 1/3 spells left and will use acid splash after this round.
Skivven Kraskarras |
"This is taking too long!"
Skivven takes his dagger and swings at the skeleton in front of him, trying to distract it, giving Valeria a better chance to hit it.
"Hey, sure pick on the little guy! It's because you don't have any guts!"
dagger aid another (fighting defensively): 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 6 - 4 = 14
Valeria has +2 to hit the skeleton, on top of flanking. My AC is now 20.

With Skvven continuing to provide a distraction, Valeria scores a hit to the creature's midsection cracking a rib.

The undead's claw punches through Trem's protective barrier, cutting bloody lines across his stomach.
Skeleton 4 also divides its attacks against the people surrounding it, but he aims the leftover claw against the weakened mage.

Harrash's acid burns the skeleton where the healing touch had injured it previously and the skeleton falls apart as the necromantic energy is burned away.
You stand amidst the underground desert. The dark, still terrain lays dormant again after the defeat of the undead. While the combat had obscured part of the trail of footprints, they are easy enough to find again. The path continues straight ahead to the shadow of a rock outcropping.
Skivven Kraskarras |
"Whoo! Everyone okay?"
Skivven examines the skeletons to see if there is anything interesting about them.
Are these remains human and simply have extra arms grafted on? Or are they some unheard of species? Are they normal undead, or were they animated with technology?

Harrash |
Harrash ignores Skivven's question, focusing on the slain undead.
"Someone must have seen these creatures before us, because we saw a painting of a four-armed creature at the beginning of the cave, with the picture of the robot," Harrash notes.
Skivven Kraskarras |
"Was the picture that of a skeleton, or a living being?"
I'm assuming the skeletons had nothing of value either.
"So where to now? This is a really big room. Why don't we go along the wall so we can figure out how big it is?"
Harrash |
I'm guessing it was a living being: "men drawn with four arms"
Harrash follows Skivven across the wall and looks for pathways and anything unusual along the way.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
Trem Kiran |
"Was the picture that of a skeleton, or a living being?"
"I was... um... I was wondering the same thing. This... This place is so big. It would, um, takes days to search it." Look over to the trail of footprint, Trem points in the direction they are going. "The... The trail goes that way. Shouldn't we, you know, follow it?"
