Masters of the Universe, "Born from Ashes" (Inactive)

Game Master Viscount K

Ten years ago, He-Man and Skeletor disappeared, along with Castle Grayskull. Eternia is powerless to fight the threats of a new generation.

The call has gone out for new Masters of the Universe to defend against the forces of evil.

Okay, so half damage taken is non-lethal and everything heals triple rates. As well as healing magic taking up three slots and costing three times as much. Is that correct?

Assuming it is, I'm changing one of my commonly prepared weird science gadgets to an active camouflage field (aka Vanish spell).

Correct, excepting that 1/2 damage isn't non-lethal as you take it, it becomes nonlethal after battle. Just a clarification in language.

Cool beans on changing the gadget; I haven't looked too closely at anyone's numbers yet, I want to get all the players and their stories sorted out before I really bother with the numbers much. As far as I'm concerned, any and all of the crunch is free to shift around right up until we've gotten started - and even then, probably still a little fluid until everyone's got a feel for their characters.

Can I craft my starting gear? I'll probably finish up my backstory tomorrow. Would Orko just accept Teckno into his new team if he showed up at the palace? What would Mekaneck tell Teckno about the situation on Eternia when they meet?

Yep - I think I said this, but in case I didn't, you can spend up to half of your starting gold on self-crafted items.

Eternos is always open to volunteers, it's once you've proven yourself in power and, more importantly, loyalty, that you get to officially be a Master. When they met - depends when that was. How long ago did you land?

However long is takes to heal from a starship crash and ride a wind raider to Eternos's castle from the plains north of the city.

I like that a lot. I'm going to go with that.

Jelani:
So, maybe a day. Probably TOday. If you've got a decent vehicle, basically anywhere on Eternia can be reached within a few hours. It's a small planet.

Alright...there's a couple possible situations. If Mekaneck just checked out the crash site and found you there, he'd pretty much give you the rundown of what's been happening, if you asked. Not much of it is secret, with Grayskull gone. Meaning you'd pretty much end up with the information in the introductory post, plus whatever details you specifically inquired after. He'd offer to escort you back to the palace, and given your obvious alien nature, probably also offer to introduce you to Orko and the Masters.

If I had my preference, this would end up a little more dramatic. It's not unreasonable to assume 'Neck ran into one of the former Evil Warriors there investigating the site as well, and (naturally) they fought. If you helped out during the battle, then Mekaneck would be grateful and quite a bit more trusting. You wouldn't end up with much more info - there just isn't that much available, really - but he would probably drop a little of the usual bravado and confide that they could really use the help, if you'd be willing. You'd end up on the team with almost no preamble.

Even if your actual situation ended up different, that probably still tells you (more or less) what you'd know. If Teckno thought to ask any more specific questions, let me know and I can fill you in with Mekaneck's answers.

This is Tiny Coffee Golem.

Meet Polgara the Tattoo'd Avion caster.

Viscount, I'll clean up the format. I just wanted to get it into the shell.

To the group:

I need a title, such as "sorceress," but not sorceress since that's a very specific person. Something like "Polgara the enchantress" except she's not an enchanter, she's a blaster. Any thoughts?

Polgara the Elementalist? or Elementalista?

Viscount - Which evil warrior might be lurking around those parts?

Hm. Is your magic specializing in any way aside from blaster, or does it manifest in a particular way? A common theme would make titles a bit easier. If you're focusing on electricity, for example, we could go with Lady of Lightning or Storm Shaman. One thing to note is that basically every spellcaster on Eternia has Spell Thematics, without the mechanical advantage - because it's cooler that way. Actually, almost any game I've ever run hands this to spellcasters, because of the rule of cool.

Mistress of Magic is the first one that comes to mind. A bit generic, but alliteration and/or rhyming was a pretty big theme with the titles from the original show. "Buzz-Off, the Heroic Spy in the Sky", for instance.

Elementalist is probably a good title. She has the admixture thing, so she can change the elemental type to suit her whims.

She is specifically fond of cold magic though.

Her spell themantic is basically energy, though cold would probably be the default themantic. "blue fire" could be a cool thematic.

Jelani:
Plains north of the city, right? Urm...I'unno. They mostly don't hang around too close to Eternos. If we relocated a little further off, this might be simpler, but I'm gonna check the map real quick...

Welp, that puts you pretty close to the Evergreen Forest, which might lead to Beast Man. Triclops or Trapjaw could also have shown up, based on the technological opportunities available from new spacecraft. In fact, let's make it both of them; they team up occasionally, as their abilities match up nicely. This also explains why Mekaneck might have needed the help.

That map is really awesome, by the way. Thanks to Jelani for posting it. While I'm thinking about it, allow me to mention to everybody that the map isn't going to necessarily be perfectly accurate to everything in this game, and is (obviously) very not to scale. It is sweet, though, I'd check it out if you haven't yet.

Oh, I have to add the mythic level and come up with a cohesive background.

I don't really know anything about the mythic rules. I need to download and read them, as well as the update.

Triclops and Trapjaw it is. I have the day off tomorrow to work on writing the story.

Here's the list of potentials as I understand it so far. Let me know if I've missed you. In no particular order -

Characters

  • Unnamed Flying Tattooed Wizard Lady: Tiny Coffee Golem. Inheritor of ancient technomagic(?).

  • There's your titel Golem!!!

"Look its Unamed Flying Tattooed Wizard Lady here to help us!!"
"Beware Evil Warriors I am Unamed Flying Tattooed Wizard Lady."

And Viscount you said Fisto was the current man-at-arms but that age was weighing HEAVILY on him. So is he now FATSO..??
    ROFL!

Tatoo'd elementalist has added her mythic stuff to the character sheet. At tier 1 it's surprisingly simple. ;-)

I still need to write up a backstory. Ive got a basic idea, but I need to get inspired to write it better than just a timeline.

Oh, also I ditched the custom item to make my flying maneuverability better. I still wear boots of levitation, so the combination of that and a fly speed should make me fairly maneuverable. I just have to think of a way to permanently (magically) increase my flight speed.

    Wolfen(Tweaked Catfolk)
    Catfolk 9RP
    Cat's Luck-Removed -1RP
    Sprinter-Removed -1RP
    Fast +10' +1RP
    Fearless +1RP
    Bite 1d3 +1RP
    Bite 1d4 +1RP
    =11RP

    Input welome.

You've got some time before worrying about the mythic rules, Jelani. Don't sweat it, they're not all that complicated in their current playtesty form.

Zarisa, I'd say stick with Sprinter rather than upgrade to Fast. That's a bit much. Other than that, good by me.

Polgara, I got nothin'. Can't think of much that increases fly speed, other than haste and such. That being said, 30 feet is perfectly respectable. I believe I read that you're Avion, right? As in, Stratos' people? They do pretty much all wear jetpacks. So that custom magic item is probably the best way to go.

If you're avian themed and magicy, you might consider taking the example name used earlier, "Angela",

Other possibilities that might work as slight variations on your themes: Skylark, Wing-Witch, Arc-Anna (especially if you're lighting themed), or Val-Kyrie.

    Or something like that.

Are any of you aware of a place on these boards where I can store my notes for this game? 'cause at the moment, I'm keeping it all in my extremely disorganized journal/notebook, and it's getting a little hard to keep track of. I don't think such a thing exists, but hey, maybe I'm wrong.

Spoilers in the discussion thread and tell players not to read them.

    Bah. No likey.

    Fine! Campaign wiki it is!

Right. Unless I find somewhere better to put it, the campaign wiki will be found here.

It's pretty bare bones for right now, but sooner or later I'll be putting basic info on major NPC's, locations, other things. Feel free to throw up your characters on the character section there (if you can, I'm a little fuzzy right now on how it works), but don't feel like it's necessary in any way.

Campaign info tab? That's kinda what it's for.

Yup. Campaign info tab. Organize with spoilers.

-sigh- My internet at home was out all yesterday and is still out today. I've been unable to do the research I need to finish writing my story. They've claimed it will be back up sometime today. If so I should still be able to finish it by Wednesday.

Don't sweat it, Jelani. Life happens.

    Polgara backstory:

Polgara was born as most of the Avion were. Free spirited winged humanoids. She showed some potential for the magic arts and received some training. In her youth she had a tragic accident that damaged one of her wings and she was no longer able to fly as she had. Being so land bound was insulting and infuriating for her. Healing magic’s were not able to correct the extensive damage to the internal structure of her wings. Strong willed as she was she immersed herself in her magical studies, promising herself that she would find a solution.

Deep in study one day she came across a thin book on ancient history sucked behind the ancient bookcase. Based on the dust it had been there for a very very long time. Ever curious she read through it. It seemed mundane enough. Although upon contemplation she realized that there was a connection with other things she had learned over the years. One night she awoke with a start, realizing that the history was the missing piece of the puzzle. With renewed hope for a solution she cross referenced several books and came to the conclusion that there was a cave containing a long forgotten ancient power. Having gleaned the location she set out that very night. With her small amount of magic and overabundance of stubbornness she eventually made her way to a lifeless mountain range and climbed her way to a small craig. Forcing her way in she discovered a circular stone table containing an odd metallic pattern across it.

Curiosity overcame her natural caution and she touched the table. Her hand stuck fast as energy rolled out of the table and into her body. She screamed as light and pain enveloped her entire body. The world went black. When she awoke the pattern was no longer on the stone table, but her skin was covered with an almost identical. She reflexively stretched to work the last lingering bits of muscle soreness and realized that her wing moved properly. Joyfully taking to the sky she returned to her people to continue her magical studies. Her potential was increased exponentially. She seemed to take to her lessons like an old master. The mysterious power within her appears to be a blessing, but such things rarely come without cost.

That's where i stole the name from.

Though names and likenesses are used in a fictions and parodic manner. ;-)

The character personality isn't influenced by the Belgariad. Just the name.

Gotcha. It's been a lot of years since I read those books. :)

TC Golem/Polgara: First up, I'm quite pleased with your background. It's a good bit of fun. Also, the last line of your background triggered something in my brain: What would you say to taking on an oracle's curse, modeled after the Consumed curse (Your effective oracle level would be your character level)? It seems to fit. Your choice, but I like the idea of the virus not being all peaches and cream, and of it evolving some over time.
    ------------------
...grr. I had a list of things for everybody, but the forum ate it. Short version - we're just about ready to roll, presuming no one else pops in. I'd still like to see the final versions of Teckno and Dare's stories, and if Lycana and Rokku could answer the questions I'd asked earlier that'd be great. Once we've got all that, we can see about finalizing everyone's mechanical side, and then roll out.

Internet still down. Trucking away at the story when I get the time. Hardest part is I don't know how to characterize the various NPCs in the story since I never saw the show. I'm gonna just guess and you can correct me if they are acting out of character.

Also have a lot of prep work to do for my real life game before Thursday.

Just in case you're interested, Jelani (or anyone, really), the first season of the original show is on Hulu for free. If you're looking for characters studies, the best choice would probably be the first episode according to Hulu, the Diamond Ray of Disappearance.

I'm also told that the new series is available for streaming on Netflix, although I currently fail at confirming that. Alternatively,

The newer series is a hell of a lot better with...okay, basically everything. Particularly in showing us characters with actual personalities. That being said, the old show was totally unabashed at bringing in completely new characters and situations that have nothing to do with everything we've seen so far, which is part of how Eternia has evolved to the awesome mishmash it is. If you're just looking for a good example of what these shows are all about, I would actually highly recommend the first five episodes of She-Ra, otherwise known as the movie The Secret of the Sword.

I was actually thinking more along the lines of the tattoo's being intelligent. Regardless it was a just an open plot point for you. ;-)

The consumed thing works too. All the more reason for me to avoid damage.

Who says it can't be both?

Alright. I'll go with the consume thing.

    Backstory:
The shooting star blazed across the night sky over the plains of Eternos. Mekaneck watched as instead of piddling out, the ball of fire kept going, getting larger and larger. Zooming in with his mechanical vision, he could see a strange looking craft through the flickering flames. It was surrounded in some kind of force-shield which was warding off the heat, but even as he watched the shield was flickering out. A moment later it had failed. The ship itself quickly heated to a cherry-red glow in the friction of Eternia's atmosphere. Craning his long, creaking neck, Mekaneck watched the falling craft blaze its way right over him, no more than a mile up. The ship slammed into the ground a few miles distant, throwing up a cloud of dirt and smoke. Mekaneck slowly retracted his rusty, sparking neck. It had fallen into dire disrepair in the years since Duncan's death. I wonder what was on that ship? I better go check it out. He thought as his neck snapped down into place.

He climbed down from the rock on which he'd been stargazing, and jogged the short distance to his Wind Raider. Climbing into the vehicle, he took off and flew towards the smoking crater. He landed a quarter mile out and extended his neck again. Zooming in on the crater, he saw two figures scrambling amongst the smoke. It took a few moments before the smoke cleared enough for him to recognize them. They were Trap Jaw and Tri-Klops! The Evil Warriors were standing on the edge of the crater, gesturing down at the wreck. I can't let those two get whatever technology might be on that wreck. Things are bad enough without two of the Evil Warriors equipped with who knows what kind of new gear! he thought, retracting his neck and hefting his club. He used a nearby grove of trees as cover and crept carefully closer until he could overhear what they were saying.

"I've never seen anything like this before. Looks like only that orange field and whatever's inside it is intact." Trap Jaw said to Tri-Klops. The three eyed cyborg replied to him absentmindedly, his eyes rotating around his head in slow revolutions, "Go down and check it out. I'll keep an eye out up here." Just as Trap Jaw began to scramble down the still smoking edge of the crater, one of Tri-Klop's eyes came to rest on the copse of trees where Mekaneck crouched amongst the bushes. The red triangular lens whirred as it focused. "Mekaneck!" Tri-Klops cried out angrily, his hand flying to his sword.

Oh sh*t! Mekaneck thought, diving for cover as Tri-Klop's eyes started raining laser fire down into the bushes. Trap Jaw whirled at the cry, and scrambled back up the rim of the crash site, adding his own laser fire to Tri-Klop's. Trap Jaw was firing blindly, and had little chance of actually hitting Mekaneck, but Tri-Klops could see through anything, and there soon wouldn't be any trees left to hide behind. Mekaneck dove from tree trunk to tree trunk, his mind scrambling for a plan. I'm not match for those two alone! What was I thinking coming over here? Suddenly a higher pitched whine joined into the buzzing of Trap Jaw and Tri-Klop's fire. Mekaneck heard cries of surprise from the Evil Warriors, and peeking around the tree he was behind, saw bolts of orange energy coming from down in the crater. Now's my chance! He thought, coming out from behind the tree at a sprint, his club raised high. Mekaneck still couldn't see what had come to his aid, but the new blaster fire distracted them long enough for him to close with Trap Jaw. He brought his club down in a two handed overhead swing. Trap Jaw whirled, growling and raised his gun-arm up to block the blow.

Over the evil cyborg's shoulder, Mekaneck could see some kind of humanoid robot with a gun mounted on its right arm firing at Tri-Klops. Seeing it had the three-eyed hunter's attention, it tapped a button on its left arm and an orange colored force-field sprung up there like a great shield. Using the shield, the robot deflected Tri-Klop's lasers. Mekaneck dodged a blow from Trap Jaw's booted foot and temporarily lost sight of the other two combatants. Retaliating, he brought his elbow around hard to clang into Trap Jaw's metal mandible. The blow whipped the evil cyborg's head around and gave Mekaneck a moment to see Tri-Klops charging the unknown robot with his sword. As Tri-Klops was closing the last few yards, the robot touched something on his belt and flickered out of sight. Tri-Klops slashed his sword through empty air, and looking around, roared in frustration, "Nobody hides from Tri-Klops! I can see everything!"

"See this, b*tch." came the synthetic sounding reply from a few feet away where the robot had reappeared in the act of flinging a small metal disk. Trap Jaw trying to bite his face off prevented Mekaneck from seeing the result of the toss, but he heard a "Waaaaaaagh!", followed by a hard thunk. Meanwhile he caught Trap Jaw's mouth with his club, and the Evil Warrior bit a huge chunk out of it. Shoving Trap Jaw back Mekaneck could see that there was only a perfectly square pit where Tri-Klops had stood. The robot was leveling his gun at Trap Jaw's back. Mekaneck ducked as a hail of laser fire streaked up from the crater, much of it striking Trap Jaw unawares. The metal jawed fiend pitched forward into the dirt, unconscious. Mekaneck could hear Tri-Klops cursing from inside the pit as the robot approached him, its gun lowered. "My databanks indicate you are the Master of the Universe known as Mekaneck. Is this correct?" it asked in its monotone synthetic voice. Mekaneck slowly nodded in reply. "Who are you?" he asked the alien creature. "Teckno." came its simple response. "I come as ambassador from the planet Mecklar. We seek the assistance of the Masters of the Universe."

Mekaneck looked from Teckno to Trap Jaw, who was starting to come around, and then to the pit whence curses were still emanating. "Uhh, ok, Teckno. Lets get out of here first though. Come with me." The former Master of the Universe started jogging away from the crash site, heading for where he'd left the wind raider. Teckno jogged along side him, his servos whirring as he ran. "I've got a vehicle stashed over here." Mekaneck said by way of explanation. The robot said nothing, and its lack of face made its thoughts impossible to guess. Upon reaching the wind raider Mekaneck hopped in and started up the engines, taking off as soon as Teckno was inside. "Where are we going?" Teckno asked him in his computerized drawl. "I'm taking you to the palace in Eternos. I don't know what you've been told the situation here on Eternia is, but I'm sorry to say that you may be in for a bit of bad news. Orko will know how to help you though, you can talk to him when we get to the palace." The robot sat silent for a few seconds before responding with the word, "Acceptable."

That's what I came up with. It doesn't go into every nitty gritty detail of his history, but I hope it will suffice.

Suffice? That was awesome. Hell, you even spelled Tri-Klops' name right. =D

Well done, sir, well worth the wait.

Glad you liked it, and glad I finally finished it :)

Now to wait for the game to start :P
