...WOW. That's literally the smile of a sociopath. "Uh, no need ta' be so formal man. Just call me Shaun." He puts on a warm smile, but there is a clear tension underneath it. Okay, so I'm having fancy dinner with Wingblade's psycho-psuedo-dad and I'm super sweaty and in gym clothes. No f@~+ing pressure.

Clearing his throat, the Scotsman takes a seat opposite Shayera and loads his plate up with ribs and shrimp. "So, uh, Alexis is joinin' us then? Hope there's enough food. Gir-...ah, GUY, can eat. (Still not used ta' that...)" With surprising dexterity he twirls his chopsticks into his hand and deftly starts at the meat. "So, uh, sorry if this is rude, but I have no idea what ta' call ya'. Do ya'...have a name no that a weird question..."

(Will reply to texts in a bit.)

after the meeting.

Okay, firstly, I'm not a mind reader. I wish I was, but I'm low grade intuitive psychic. Low grade enough to not notice until I got hit with a power nullifying effect. She says second, If I'm making sense, it's because I'm right. If I wanted to air your family shit... I've known for weeks. I didn't choose this.

and be VERY careful about accusing people of being mind controllers. it's... a pretty serious accusation. and wholly false in my case. if I could control minds, B would have admitted to having power, and... well, you'd all be a lot more truthful.

But whatever, you won't care what I say. Why the f~@~ did I defend you? she says, turning and leaving.

tuesday night

The elevator opens and Alexandra steps out. Abbacus, bring up the statistics on Ig-knight, Blaze-er, Dante, and... the Doc's pyromancy stuff, if you've got that... if he's working with Circe, he might be magic. pull it up on the Chem lab console? want to try to design a chemical countermeasure. She steps forward, three fingers on the nose of her mask to remove it. Actually, dig up all our data on the doc, and other , let's see if I can make a more general counterme- she stops suddenly, stopping the mask less than a centimeter off her face, and replacing it. Sorry, hadn't known we would have guest in our Headquarters... she says, Quietly studying the scientist across from Wing and Shaun I'm The Silver Shadow, her teammate. She says by way of introduction to Dr. Doom

Pierce the Man in the White Coat's mask: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3) + 2 = 9
How could I get influence over him

Lunch

Well, you can get away with the colours of your costume. I'm going in indigo. she says But come on, you'll look so nice in a tux. she smiles.

No clue what that is... it was from the fundraisers. But you look so Glum... it's a gala. there's dancing, all the other heroes will be there... well, except Whip, and Matrix, they tend to skip. Just pose for a few pictures with rich people, and enjoy a night of dancing, fancy food, and champagne. It'll be lovely! she says, quiet but clearly enthusiastic.

Shayera rolls her shoulders. "Dunno. He thinks my place is compromised. He'll probably never set foot in here until the Triakosia are taken care of." She rolls her eyes.

Shayera's father's expression is inscrutable when Shaun asks him his name. "'Sir' will be fine. Your attire notwithstanding, we are having a formal dinner. Mr. MacGregor."

After Alexandra appears...

Shayera waves her over to the table. "It's also my home, you know." She stands up, wiping her mouth with a napkin before continuing. "Alexandra, this is my father. We were going to have dinner with Alexis, but since he's avoiding my place he's a no-show. Come on and eat; there's plenty."

Shayera's father also rises. He gives her a curt nod, then sits down again. "A pleasure to meet you, Miss Walker. I've had occasion to follow the exploits of your family. From afar."

Alexandra: He's nearly impossible to read with this one brief glance. You'll have to have dinner with him and interact before you can Pierce His Mask. (But you'll get to keep your roll.)

"I have to make it up to Shayera later. I wish I could go. I should have suggested going out to a restaurant. I hope that Shayera and her dad and mom will be okay." Alexis sighed. He hoped it wouldn't be awkward for Shayera to explain why he was gone.

Wednesday Lunch

"Cassie helped me change the name and explain it as an error," Alexis told Kaoru. "I picked up the classes that I had before. I liked them a lot and wanted to continue."

He listens as the explanation comes, Alexis' interest piqued. "A gala is a fancy dress party, like a ball. Are you going together? I wish I could come," He says, digging into his pasta.

Dinner with “the Blades”

Shaun sighs when informed about Alexis. ”Yep. Another weird episode...”

While it is nigh-imperceptible to a normal person, Shayera easily picks up Shaun accelerated heart rate when her father asks him to call him by ‘Sir.’ For the briefest of moments it seems like he’s about to bite back, but he settles with aggressively drowning his meat in sauce.

Thankfully, the lull is perfectly interrupted by the Silver Shadow’s sudden arrival.

Wingblade wrote:
"It's also my home, you know."

”I mean it’s also ta’ closet thin’ we got ta’ HQ but...”

In a weird way, Shaun was grateful for the detective’s arrival. Her costume certainly made him seem slightly less out of place...very slightly. Dishing himself some soup, the Scotsman cleared his throat again and tried to ‘ease’ some tensions. ”So ye’ keep up with ta’ hero scene then? Bet ye’ never guess who I am on ta’ team! I’m an expert at keepin’ secrets.” He grins comically, trying to draw the scientist’s attention and let the Shadow do her thing.

Using Never let you down to spend 2 Team and boost Alexandra’s roll to an 11. (Yes I know I could just spend 1 but I’ve been dying to use this move okay!?) I do believe that puts us at 4 Team in pool.

I was expecting Shaun to twist Kaoru's words. I was more surprised that both Cassie and Alexandra were misinterpreting them. Though she'd be slightly horrified to discover that apparently on "Bran" understood what she was doing (even if he probably underestimates her willingness to interpret Shaun's actions as "quitting the team").

Wednesday lunch
Kaoru clenched her jaw briefly before calmly saying. "All your supporting fake ID paperwork is using the other name. Anybody looking at your ID will notice the discrepancy now." God, why did Alexis have to be so dumb? She hated having to deal with stupid people. And was he really telling her he had dropped the Shakespeare class after she had gone to all that trouble to get him into a highly desirable, already full one? Uggg, that is the *last* time I waste time and energy on that ungrateful brat.

Instead of snapping at the idiot who probably didn't know better and would just make her feel like shit about it anyway, Kaoru instead decided to respond to Alexandra, poking at her food as she spoke. "Dancing's girly. I don't like it. And the entire thing is really just six hours during which we'll be expected to pump up the egos of any idiot with a checkbook. They just want us to be circus monkey with cymbals performing for their own entertainment." She rubbed her eyes. She was probably going to be held responsible for Shaun behaving like an uncouth baboon, too. With her hand mostly muffling her mouth, she also muttered, "And I don't own a tux." She knew Alexandra was trying to be nice by saying she'd look good in one. But she knew the truth. In this kind of time frame, there was no way she'd get one that fit. She'd probably just end up drowning in fabric. It would only accentuate to everyone how unmanly she was. How she was just some scrawny, Asian kid too far out of his league and looking like a clown next to all the real heroes. How long would it take for Alexandra to see her as just that as well?

I don't know where Shaun was getting his numbers, but he actually just brought us down to 2 team. NOT 4.

"We should go see the tailor who made my clothes." Alexis pipes up, staring at Kaoru. "He made me the clothes I wore to the escape room like a couple hours before I got there. They fit perfectly. He can make you a suit for the gala that will fit you." He smiled and took another bite of his food. "He even made the suit so that I can throw a car wearing it without it tearing. I really liked him. His fingers were so fast, like..."

He frowns, wiggling his fingers in front of his face as he tries to recall something out of his grasp. "...I am...not sure? Something. Hummingbird! Like a hummingbird with its wings flapping!" He seems content with that analogy.

"I can show you his shop after school if you want," He offers to Kaoru.

to clarify, I had meant "Black tie" in the sense of formality... didn't know it was a separate level of formal dress... fun times.

I expect you too Dine, Mr. Bond

Alexandra drops the mask. You know my identity, I suppose the mask is rather pointless then. she says. she also shucks her coat, leaving her in a white button down shirt, with body armour underneath. Abs, it looks like you can take your time on that data.

Alexandra begins to help herself to the food, and takes a few bites. So, in the absence of Alexis, what have we been discussing? I've been trying to find time to Bullshit up that Catcher Essay. You choose a theme to focus on, wing? I'll be glad when I need never hear Salinger's name again. She smiles, speaking jovially no overt hostility, but curse a little, talk school, keep away from your powers on the off chance it's an Ace in the hole you can keep. see what pisses him off, see what he likes. no man is a stone wall.

yes. dancing is Girly. hence the utter lack of male dancers on ballrooms. Only used in Saphic courtship, dancing. Alexandra says, needling her. And, yeah, we'll have to pose with them, but, well, I can get away with being a bit of a rogue. Besides, nice food, champagne, lovely music. and as a hero, your choice of dancing partner. Alexandra assures Kay. though, if you know what's good for you, you'll not dance with any other girl too much. she smiles, it was clearly in Jest.

We can get you one. I'm fine wasting Reaver-tech's cash, and it is a team expense.

The Man in the White Coat's glasses reflect the lights coming in through the windows, completely obscuring his eyes as he looks at Shaun. Finally, in more of an answer to Alexandra's comment on her needing a mask than Shaun's inane bet, he says, "I make it a point to know with whom my daughter associates. He focuses on his food for a time.

Shayera looks up when Alexandra asks her about the literature assignment. [b]"Oh, that. I'm thinking of going with Sally's perspective. You know, what it's like watching someone as they crash and burn."

Wednesday lunch
Kaoru flinched slightly at Alexandra's Sapphic comment. "The guys who didn't b&!~# about cotillion were all the ones who got bullied." She then opened her mouth to make an annoyed comment about how she wasn't wasteful enough to spend thousands of dollars for some stupid super-hero insta-suit, when Alexandra comments that they could expense it. She slowly closed her mouth, a distant look on her face. "You...think we could expense it?" She cleared her throat, trying to shrug nonchalantly but seeming to perk up slightly. "Ok, I guess. But mother's insisting on 'family time,' so it would have be after dinner."

Wednesday, Lunch

Xiu Ying is seated with the other three Chinese girls, chatting in Mandarin animatedly. Throughout the lunch period, each girl tells some sort of story having the other three stifling their giggles.

Near the end of the period, after dropping off her tray, Shayera swings by the table where Bronwyn is seated. She is straight-backed and expressionless when she hands her a small bundle. "This is yours," she says.

Bronwyn:

It's one of your track medals that you let Shayera have (or a trophy, or some other sort of award). Tucked inside a fold of the ribbon is a tiny slip of paper. It says "2 am. scrpyrd"

You, umm, if you wanted you could've kept... Thanks. I umm, I actually really needed this medal back. Glad it won't be cluttering up your place too... she trailed off as she saw Shayera really wasn't here to talk, and began haphazardly scooping up her belongings, "Hey, umm, I've gotta go help with a, uh, thing, but there was some team stuff you should, if you wanted... She lets silence reign for a few minutes, before finally saying. Okay, I'm going to start talking work if no one else says anything.

Shayera nods at Alexandra's planned essay topic, certainly understanding the urge. She falls silent and keeps eating.

Her father then responds to Alexandra's threat of talking work. "Well, I had been led to believe that there is some opposition to treating Alexis's mental condition after their most recent rebirth."

He sets his chopsticks down and pushes his empty plate away from him. "It's a fascinating ability, but unfortunately one that has a significant drawback. The significant loss of long-term memories. Due to my expertise, I was brought in to assist with developing a treatment. It requires some very specialized and sensitive equipment, which the Triakosia have, of course. But fortunately, I have equipment that can be modified to duplicate the treatment."

Shayera arches an eyebrow at Alexandra. She looks at the card, opens it, and reads its contents. She immediately begins laughing. "Oh, man. This thing?" She keeps laughing. "Well, I'll go if my boss goes, how about that?" She strides down the hall, still chuckling.

Yeah, some... trepidation, on the parts of myself and a few others. I apologize, but... well, I'm slow to trust. I'm sure Wing has told you about my investigations into the members of the team. And there are pieces of your past that make me hesitant to entrust the mind of a friend to you. Alexandra pauses, studying his reactions as she talks, and formulating her next words.

I want to believe you are genuine here. That a former supervillain can see the error of their ways, and repent. But for at least a while longer, I think you will have to endure suspicion. And I'd be more comfortable if Matrix or Foresight were to oversee Alexis' treatments. she takes a bite, to let her words sink in.

And while such actions have soiled any possible trust going forward with the likes of such stalwart heroes as the line of Silver Shadows," he makes the briefest of pauses to drive home the irony of the statement, "I do not regret the knowledge, resources, and advancements I've cultivated from such activities."
He's trying to shift your Freak up and your Superior down. What do you do?

He makes a pointed look at the apartment. "I've supplied your team's headquarters. I've the ability to prevent one of your teammates from degenerating mentally. I've already gone to significant risk and expense to procure the necessary components to assist Alexis."

His mouth twists into a sort of smile. "But in the spirit of further cooperation, I will submit to further oversight, lest I decide to put on a black hat and start twirling my mustache."

Shayera stands up and collects her plate and her father's. "This is Alexis we're talking about. The Triakosia who talked to me sounded genuinely concerned about her. Him. They said that he'd start forgetting his friends, if he kept dying. Now, let's hope he never has to die again, but that's no reason not to plan ahead. Right?"

She blinked, still caught off guard by... everything, but before she could think of a reply... "Gabby?" Their father was walking out the door, "You didn't call, is everything- Bronwyn?"

"Hi Papá... I-" "Yeah, lotta not calling going around." Gabby glared at both of them.

"So you're bringing her home?" "Yes-" "No!" Bronwyn rounded on Gabby, [b]"They didn't say I couldn't come home, Gabby. Wednesday lunch
Kaoru had paid enough attention to note that they were planning on going shopping tomorrow instead of today and then promptly zoned out, repressing her instinctive anxiety at leaving something that last minute. But then, what kind of an ass waited to inform you of a mandatory event with a strict dress code two days before? Seriously, what if she had booked Hamilton tickets for that night or something? Despite Alexandra's enthusiasm, the entire thing didn't bode well. But essentially getting a free, custom-tailored suit out of the deal made her a lot less bitter about the experience. She just had to keep reminding herself of that. It was a luxury she never could have justified for just herself. But, well, if it was mandatory and some nameless corporation was footing the bill, she may as well take advantage of it, right?

Either way, she had no interest in joining in the gala-talk around her, instead focusing on the wristband-like object she had gotten. It had a magnetic clasp but no obvious ports or buttons. Was it...just decorative? And why had she been the only one to get one? Was it some kind of team leader thing? Like some kind of much fancier wristband they had at parties to indicate if someone was over 21 or not? She should probably check if it was a tracker of some sort when she got home. She absently excused herself and started heading to her next class, still puzzling over the object.

Wednesday after school
Much to her chagrin, Kaoru hadn't gotten an opportunity to examine the wristband any more in her afternoon classes. It would have just been too obvious that she wasn't paying attention. So she had put the item on as a bracelet of sorts and hurried home (possibly after another team meeting if that's still happening), where she was quickly able to determine that it wasn't a tracker. She relocated to the garage where her still mostly packed work bench was set up. Which meant that for now it was mostly a large table with lamps, some mounted magnifying lenses, some clamps, a soldering set, and a few other random tools scattered about. It was fine. All she really wanted was the magnifying lenses for now.

It took a while of carefully examining every inch of the small band (and also wondering what the hell it was made out of), eventually she found the slimmest of cracks running all along three edges. Delicately applying pressure along the edge, she was actually able to pry the parts apart fairly easily, like it was part of the design. Though oddly, the inside appeared identical to the outside. Much more quickly this time, she was able to find another seam and then another until she had unfolded the wristband into something about the size of an impossibly thin cell phone (or, well, maybe not impossibly thin, but definitely way sleeker than any she had seen). But it was still all just the same, featureless black, glossy material. Until it wasn't.

Out of nowhere, words appeared on the surface. She flipped the device over and the words transferred to the new side facing up. She peered more closely at it. It looked like a phone screen displaying text if the phone were somehow able to do that while turned off. Due to how screen technology worked, it was pretty much impossible to accurately portray "black" as a color since the screen still had to project light and, well, there was no such thing as black light. But this device seemed to have somehow gotten around that? (Pixel sized individual light sources that could be independently turned on or off?) Not to mention the fact that the entire device had been folded up. She had seen demos for new foldable screen technology, but this was so far beyond that.

All these thoughts flitted through her mind in an instant as she read the text: How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck self-balancing binary search trees?

She sucked in a deep breath. No. It couldn't be. Could it? There was a blinking cursor, clearly waiting for user input. She tried dragging upwards from the "bottom" of the device, and sure enough, a software keyboard popped up. Heart pounding, she carefully typed in a response. I don't know, but it takes log(N) time.

The device made a soft unlocking sound (where the hell are the speakers?!?) before the text disappeared to be replaced with a scrollable text view.

Hey Cal,
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back in touch with you. Delphi has proven to be a more apt opponent than I had initially anticipated. Hopefully this little gadget is enough to make it up to you. Unfortunately, you will also need it to properly establish communications once again as this is (obviously) just a pre-recorded message. While Delphi has done their best to block my incoming communiqués, they will not be looking for outgoing ones outside the normal routes from you to me. I've included details on how you might set up a backdoor channel for us. It's possible it might take a while, but I have every confidence that it is well within your abilities, especially given the resources I have provided.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Before she had a chance to do much more, her mother was calling her in for dinner.

Thursday after school

Alexis was more than happy to show Kaoru and Alexandra And anyone else that wants to come to the tailor shop. Alton Finch was resting on a stool behind the counter, rubbing his knee with some frustration. He glances up at the group, noting Alexis in particular.

"Back again so soon? I hope you didn't ruin the clothes I made for you." He said, grimacing as he eases himself off of the stool. "What can I do for you?"

"We need tuxedos," Alexis said. "Me and Kaoru. And Alexandra, unless you want a dress - do you do dresses?"

"I'm no fashionista. My talent lies in the masculine form. Still, tuxedos I can do. I assume you need yours to be rated for your strength," Alton said as he limped over to grab some measuring tape and a clipboard. He turns to look at Kaoru and Alexandra.

"So aside from the style, what would you like for the suit? What talents am I compensating for? Or do you need it to simply have decent storage options for your tools of the trade?"

The next text is actually two photographs, both school pictures. The first is of Shaun, but slightly younger and with shorter hair. He’s glaring at the camera with a face that shows he’s been forced to take the photograph. The tip of a middle finger is just barely visible at the bottom of the screen.

The second is an almost a perfect tonal counterpoint to Shaun’s photo. The subject is clearly a MacGregor, with the same unnervingly familiar face, but this teenager is markedly fatter than either Shaun or his father. His hair is also much longer and much less clean. His expression however is markedly more cheerful than Bronwyn has ever seen the other two MacGregors, with an easy-going smile and slightly-mischievous glance. It’s clear he’s playing a personality to the camera as he holds up a peace sign.

Dinner with “the Blades”

Shaun’s gaze flits back and forth between Alexandra and the bespectacled man as they engage in a verbal fencing match. All through it, a thought nags at the back of his head: Wait...we had a paper due?

He pushes the slight worry away as he tries to get back into the conversation. ”Look Mr. Blade, we’re just tryin’ta’ make sure nothin’ bad happens ta’ our friend. Sh-...HE has gone through some shit, an’ as f&&*in’ weird as it sounds he’s a little skittish. We just wanna make sure that when he’s done gettin’ treated he doesn’t wake up in Terminator mode. Ta’ three of us saw that shit first hand n’ do NOT wanna sequel!” He turns and looks at Wingblade and Alexandra, partially for affirming back-up to his statement, partially for some kind of hint as to what the hell he was supposed to do in this situation. Thank God I’m already sweaty...

Reminder Alexandra: if that Pierce manages to go through, your roll’s an 11 now. Also I think Paizo might’ve eaten your Gill scene response?

Wednesday Lunch

Since I think Shaun’s the only person to not have gotten the party invite yet, we might as well make the lunch handout the replacement for the meeting.

As Kaoru hustles away to class, Shaun tries and fails to jog up behind him. ”Hey Try-Hard! Try-!...gah, damnit!” He turns and spies Alexandra, who he thankfully has an easier time navigating to. ”Hey, what was that package text ‘bout? Ye’ know?”

Wednesday night
Kaoru let out a short puff of air as she walked. The "family time" her mother had wanted to spend had been a pointless check-in to assure her that Kaoru was acclimating well to the new environment before she returned to her normal traveling schedule the next week. She probably shouldn't feel as relieved as she did that this meant she'd essentially have the house to herself for random chunks of days, but it was better than the gnawing guilt she felt knowing how much harder staying around made her mother's contracting job. Especially since it wasn't like her presence helped her in any way. She hadn't even been around enough that Kaoru had had to sneak past her to meet up with Bronwyn. She also hadn't noticed that she had been on a school field trip to a museum that had subsequently been attacked. In fact, Kaoru was half convinced she could run around fighting crime maskless, and so long as she kept her grades up, her mother would be oblivious to it all. Not that it really bothered her. She'd had years to adjust to it.

She shook her head to clear it. It didn't matter. Pinky had finally found a way to make contact! And had even managed to get her this weird, prototype technology, which as far as she could tell was some kind of incredibly advanced cell phone. Not that Pinky had really explained it. They were a big fan of letting you find something out for yourself; it made it far more rewarding a victory. Though they had said it would be necessary for another tool they were providing. Or, not "providing" exactly since it wasn't a gift. She was going to provide test data and usage diagnostics as well as a few other things in return for something she was told she would find useful in her "newest hobby."

She glanced at the glowing display on her wristband, frowning slightly. According to GPS, she should be pretty close to whatever the second tool Pinky had left for her. But as far as she could tell, there wasn't anything around. She was just in the middle of some warehouse district. Pretty much everything was already closed for the night, so hopefully they hadn't left something actually inside one of the buildings (though that probably made the most sense) since that would require either breaking in or coming back during the day.

The wristband (Really gotta come up with a better name for this thing) beeped to indicate she had reached her destination. Except she was by the street, no where near close to anything. She walked a bit further, switching directions occasionally, confirming that yes, the street was indeed the location she was being lead to. But...the only thing there was someone's car. Had they parked on top of it? She bent down to look underneath, even going so far as to check the undercarrage. No luck. But then what was it? I mean, it'd can't actually *be* the car, right? Why would Pinky think I'd need one of those? Hell, she didn't even have a learner's permit. She eyed the car like a gazelle might eye a lion.

It was actually a pretty nice looking car. Kinda sporty-looking, though she didn't recognize the model. She frowned, looking closer. Actually, it was missing any of the typical branding she expected though it looked pretty new (or at least, recently cleaned). Silver in color (The most common car color) with tinted windows. No one had yet exited to ask her what the hell she was doing, so it was probably empty. She knocked lightly on the window just to be sure. No response. With baited breath, she tried the driver's side door...and almost fell flat on her ass in surprise as the unmistakable sound of Tchaikovsky's Trepak flooded through the open crack. She quickly shut the door again, nervously looking about the deserted street to see if she had gained anybody's attention. Licking her lips, she leaned as close as she could to one window. Nothing. Not the slightest hint of noise even though she was pretty sure the music had been loud enough that she should hear something.

Bracing herself she pulled the switchblade door upwards once more to be greeted once again by the energetic music of the Nutcracker. She peered around the lit interior of the vehicle. As she had expected, it was completely empty. Before she lost her nerve, she quickly sat down in the driver's seat, jumping slightly as a soft vibration indicated the engine turning on fully (Electric car?). To her relief, as the car display powered up, a message also appeared.

Now you can arrive at your gala in style.

Thursday lunch
The test of the day for Bronwyn and Alexandra consists of a slice of pork tonkatsu and pork karaage with three different dipping sauces and instructions to see which sauce worked best with which cutlet. The first sauce is tangy, the second is sweet and spicy, and the third is something soy-based.

Thursday after school
Kaoru walked slowly out of her classes, reflecting on the night before. The drive home had been terrifying but luckily uneventful. She was forever greatful that driving a real car was no where near as difficult as those arcade racing games had led her to believe. Also that Pinky had had enough foresight to leave the car in a relatively empty district where she could practice for a bit before needing to deal with other drivers. She had left the car parked close to her house but on the street. It was a safe, residential area, so she felt reasonably confident nothing bad would happen to it. And she only had to wait a little under a week for her mom to leave, so she could park it in the garage. Given the short distance to school, she hadn't bothered to drive it here, but she would probably want to get a bit more practice in if she was going to drive it to the gala.

Her thoughts were interrupted by an all too familiar voice. "Kay?" She blinked, slowly turning around to face the person addressing her. As her gaze fell upon wavy red locks and a pair of big, baby blues, she froze, eyes wide in shock.

The girl took advantage of Kaoru's surprise to close the distance between them, reaching up to run the fingers of her right hand gently through Kaoru's hair, smiling affectionately as Kaoru automatically leaned into her touch. "You cut your hair. I almost didn't recognize you." She used her fingernails to lightly scratch the back of Kaoru's scalp. "You look really good though. And these clothes really suit you." Without breaking eye contact, she reached up to place her left hand lightly on Kaoru's collarbone, stroking the fabric of her shirt before lightly trailing it down her shoulder and arm until she was firmly holding Kaoru's hand in hers. "C'mon, I think we need to talk." Her right hand followed its companion, brushing down the back of Kaoru's neck and arm until she claimed the other hand, which was hanging limply by the hacker's side.

Still in a daze, Kaoru didn't resist when she was gently tugged forward or when she was ushered into the passenger seat of an old Ford hatchback. It wasn't until they were already driving that she found her voice enough to ask the one question running through her head. "What the fk are you doing in Halcyon, Chloe?"

Alton's Super Tuxes, Thursday.

He'd arrived a little late, unable to share a car or other transportation with ease, and Bran was visibly uncomfortable. Instead of the panoply of arms and armor he normally appeared in, he was dressed in a tremendous, ill fitting light grey sweatsuit. The pants were too tight, and the sweatshirt looked as though it had a deathsgrip on his shoulders and arms, but hung off him like a tent around the midsection.

I'd really rather just rent something, but even the big and tall stuff isn't really designed for me...

"Hello Alexandra, Alexis, possibly Shaun. Master Finch, I understand if this task is not a reasonable undertaking in such a short span of time," Please just say you can't do it. I bet I can decline the invitation if you can't do it... "But I too will require a... 'tuxedo.'" Ugh! What if they make me come in my armor, and I'm just clanking around like an idiot while everyone else looks all pretty? I hope he can do it. And I hope he soaks Him for everything he's worth as payment for the rush job! He glanced down at the simple boots he wore, which didn't particularly go with his ill-fitting garb. "I will also need other garments as are suitable to the occasion."

Wednesday after school

Shayera was sitting cross-legged on her bed, chatting with her Sisters over video conference about plans for Friday night when Whippoorwill strode in.

"Hey! Private space!" she shouts at the intrusion.

Whippoorwill doesn't react. "It's time for your exercises. Get dressed."

Shayera groans in the back of her throat, pitching her head back. "I thought we were like, done or something."

"You thought wrong." Whippoorwill addresses the girls on the screen. "Ladies, I need to borrow Shayera for a while." The girls exchange their goodbyes in Chinese before the Defender cuts them short and says, "Abacus, end call."

Whippoorwill was waiting for Shayera when she steps out of her bedroom, changed into her exercise gear. Her eyes narrow at her protégé when she moves to the practice mat. "You're not going out with them Friday."

"Your Mandarin's getting better." Shayera bows halfheartedly and goes through a few warm-up routines. "But, yeah. My Friday just opened up. There's that stupid Gala that night. The whole team got invites."

"That's right. And you're going."

She looks surprised. "What?!? It's a total waste of time! You told me that!"

Whippoorwill nods. "I did, but you're going. The rest of your team's going, so you should be a part of that."

Wingblade scoffs. "Your team goes, but you don't. I'm just following your example," she sneers. "Besides, I'm not even the leader anymore. So why should I bother?"

"You bother," Whippoorwill says, taking up a fighting stance, "because the SIDEKICK program mandates attendance, unless excused by the Defender sponsor. And I'm not giving you an excuse."

Shayera groans again. "So you're making me go, and you won't? Fine. I'll go if you go. But if you don't go, then I'm not going."

Whippoorwill doesn't blink. "Deal."

Shayera laughs. "Hah. Knew it. Looks like we both get our Friday fr--"

"I'm going. That means, you are, too."

Shayera is too stunned to react when Whippoorwill steps up and throws her to the ground.

Late Wednesday Night/Early Thursday Morning

Okay... Gabby might've done that in the worst way possible, but I am glad I've got some options.

She was quite spruced up, but wasn't exactly in her 'Sunday Best.' Though mainly because her dress showed a bit too much skin for church. Maybe I could try it with a coat..? Still a little short... And scarlet sends kind of the wrong message anyways... Man, I don't know when Shayera was even thinking I'd wear this!

I mean, okay, probably on a date like this, but... this probably isn't really a date! Right?!

Bronwyn was Quite early. She'd used some of her dwindling cash to get out to Bo's Scrapyard without having to go running in her nice clothes, and her heels, and a bit of makeup, and that perfume Shayera liked...

What if she's just coming here to break up with me for real? Like if He didn't do something super evil within 24 hours, and she's so willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that she's calling it off, and he turned her against me and... She squatted down on her heels, hands on her knees as she took a few deep breaths.

Come on. She wouldn't set up a super late night meeting just to break up with you for real. Unless maybe the message wasn't even really from her. Like He or one of her sisters suggested that she return some stuff I had at her place, and they snuck a note onto it so that they could get me here all alone and attack me! No, no, she said she wouldn't be able to hide the 'breakup' from the other Daughters of the Tiger, so probably they can't hide an ambush from her. And He knows where to get to me anyways...

It might even be better if Ying, Zi, and Hiu were gonna ambush me. I mean... I'm sure they're really good at being crazy ninjas. But I don't care about computer powers, I can see pretty well through shadows and darkness anyways... If Shayera's not there though, they won't heal, so I can't just... hit them.

But if I did, every mask I break could mean freeing Shayera from... sisters who MIIIIGHT actually care about her? "Arrrrrghh!!!!"

...I need to actually see those masks.

I still can't believe she hid this from me. I know, I know that He was manipulating her, I get it. I get why she'd be so vulnerable to this, but... God... How could she?!

She stopped in her pacing, and dusted a little debris from her pumps. "Where is she anyways?! We're meeting at 2, and it's already..." She fished out her phone. 12:45

"Crap."

***

I really should've brought something to work on... I guess I could just workout a bit? In my nice dress... Maybe I could-?

No, that is a **terrible** idea! Doesn't matter how private this place is.

***

...I guess it's not like I'm wearing like, skimpy lingerie or something. I've seen girls at the beach in less- Heck, I've seen girls go **jogging** showing more skin than these undies...

But what if- No. This is not a nightmare, so I will not actually get ambushed by a team of supervillain in my underwear. And I'll just workout for like, half an hour anyways. That'll keep me busy, and it'll be totally fine. I can sit here with my thoughts for the last half hour... Or I could work out for like... **forty-five** minutes. Yeah, yeah, I can sit here calmly for fifteen.

She stepped out her heels, and quickly, before she could change her mind again, got down to her Calvins.

Okay, okay. See? World's not ending.

She stood there, lightly nodding her whole body in an odd small sway, lips tightly clamped together, as she tried to feel comfortable.

...But if I keep standing around thinking about the world ending I'm going to freeze my buns off!

So instead she went over to the partially stripped schoolbus, hooked on a towline to the front of it, and began dragging it back and forth across her practice ground, stopping at each end to lift up one end of it like a human jack for ten reps.

You know, credit to Shaun, this was a good idea. Much quieter than rolling it on its side too... **Nnngh** Having to keep it from tipping over to the other side really makes this harder too. Ugh, this gives me the weirdest red marks where this thing presses into my shoulders though...

***

...Okay, at the end of this are reps 91-100... Guess I should switch things up.

With a steady rhythm the bus rose and fell, showing the beautiful view of her workbench and the crushed cars behind it, gleaming in the moonlight. Lovely...Eight,
nine-
The bus rose again, but behind it, eyes glinting with amusement, stood "Shayera?!"

The bus fell with a crash as Bronwyn darted back behind it, hissing like a startled cat as she whispered loudly around the wheel well, [smaller]"You're early!"

On the other side of the bus, Shayera patted the tight black leggings silhouetting her form. "Am I? I didn't bring Abacus, so I guessed," her tone was all innocence as she stepped around the bus, "Sorry, didn't mean to startle you."

"Hey!" Bronwyn reached out and yanked the bus back in the way. "Just, just give me a second to get dressed?! Then we can..." Gradually she realized that her clothes were all the way on the other side of the bus, and on the other side of Shayera...

She clenched her eyes shut, and peeked just her head out from behind the bus. "...I left my clothes over on my work bench. Could you umm... could you grab those? And then hand them to me? From around the corner?!"

Thursday After School

"Young man," Alton Finch says to Bron, not looking the least bit intimidated by his massive size, "I believe that a tuxedo would not be appropriate for someone of your size. However, I can offer tartan dress as a formal option," He indicated as he wrote down numbers. Only at this point did Bronwyn realize that he'd already taken not only his measurements, but Alexandra and Shaun's, accurate to an eighth of an inch.

"I can have everything done within the hour if no further modifications are necessary," Alton tells them. Alexis thinks before speaking up.

"Do you have masks?"

"If you're worried about secret identities, know that I don't divulge my clients unless compelled to by warrant," Alton replies as he limps behind the counter to his work station, hands blurring as material vanish and reappear in different places. "But I can supply some formal masks that are suitable for black tie events. You're not the first to ask. I would suggest half-mask or domino, but I'll work to your preferences. Your requests?"

"I'd like a white half-mask, please."

"Done. How about the rest of you?"

That you don't regret it is rather the problem. And by your own admission, you worked with a group that creates parahumans. An unethical and Illegal group working with parahumans is be definition supervillainous. Alexandra says.

But, as you accede to oversight by a psychic, I think I will elect to believe your generous intentions. thank you for agreeing to help... them. Alexandra offers to Shaun.

What is he planning. I'm assuming he'll lie, but that Alexandra can take what he says and tone and deduce something.

No, Alexis. I'm female, and this is formal, I'll be wearing a dress. she says I'm just here for immoral support. seh quips.

Bran blinked in surprise, and with a note of mild annoyance in his voice replied, "I do not see why tartan should be at all appropriate to my needs, nor in truth, why it would make sizing any simpler. As for my own requirements in..." Maskery? Vestery? Crap. "Other items of suitable nature to this outfit..." He paused a moment and withdrew a carefully folded piece of paper, "I hope these instructions should suffice. For the red spoken of in this note, you may use this as a guide." After fiddling with something tightly pressed against his sleeve, Gae-Dearg rapidly expanded outwards to its full size, its haft, the color of cooling blood, held forth for the tailor's examination.

Late Wednesday night/Early Thursday

Shayera slips out of the apartment, telling whoever might still be staying at her place (and is still up) that she's feeling restless and is going on a flight. She heads to the balcony and jumps, free-falling for a dangerous distance and pulling up just in time. She flies randomly, zig-zagging through the streets and buildings for a while, then rises higher and higher until she's above the city, circling lazily.

While gliding and letting her wings to the work of staying aloft, she undoes and pulls off her cargo pants, revealing black leggings underneath. She then spies a police helicopter doing its nightly patrol and catches up to it. She ties the pants to the rear strut quietly and without the pilots becoming aware. Then she dives away and angles herself toward Bo's Scrapyard.

She stays quiet and stealthy as she skims the buildings and avoids streetlights that might reflect off her wings. With the junkyard in view, she alights without a sound on one of the stacks of junked cars and lets her senses fill her in on everything going on.

Spotting a half-naked Bronwyn lifting a bus up and down, she watches for a little while as her stomach goes through various stages of excitement and worry. Finally, she gets a cheeky grin as she watches Bronwyn's rhythm, dives down silently and glides in behind the bus.

"Shayera?!"

The bus fell with a crash as Bronwyn darted back behind it, hissing like a startled cat as she whispered loudly around the wheel well, "You're early!"

Shayera nods, stepping away and finally allowing herself to smile. The scent of Bronwyn's favorite perfume radiates off the dress like a spotlight were shining on it. It's the red Vertucci I got her! Looks like Gabriela got her some of her clothes!

After passing them to her with a bit of a smile she retreats from the bus. When Bronwyn steps around her privacy curtain, she's sitting on a piece of an old scaffold trying not to look too pleased with herself.

Still wearing a pair of incongruous tennis shoes, Bronwyn emerges, glad she didn't blush quite as visibly in this body, but keenly aware that Shayera could probably smell her embarrassment at this range. Despite that though she rushed over to the scaffolding, lifting Shayera down from it into a tight embrace. Talking around quick, hungry kisses, she said, "This" mmwah "plan" mmwah "really" mmwah "really" mmwah "sucks!" mmwah

Shayera returns the hug tightly. Her wings spread wide as she keeps finding Bronwyn's lips and kissing her fiercely. "Mmm-hmm," she agrees, not ready for words yet.

Bronwyn's hand slid up Shayera's back, briefly brushing her hair before pressing hard against a safely angled patch of her wing. Gradually she realized that she hadn't had to avoid tangling her hand in anything else. "You don't have your charm?"

Shayera leans back. "No. Left everything behind. I don't know all that it can do. I figured, better safe than sorry."

Automatically, Bronwyn followed Shayera forward, gently kissing her again before just resting her forehead against her girlfriend's, eyes closed in contentment, though her breath still came a little quickly.

"Plus, it's weird. I remember hating the harness. Hated not feeling my wings. But wearing the charm? Nothing. I'm fine not having wings while I'm wearing it. Don't know why that is."

Bronwyn's forehead crinkled against Shayera's. "Okay... I should probably get a closer look at the charm then. If there's a chance there's anything else to it..." She leaned back, slightly, just enough to look Shayera in the eyes without crossing hers, "Like you said, better safe than sorry.

"Hey, you said you shared powers with the other Daughters. Do they get your wings?"

Shayera shakes her head. "I've never wore the mask with my wings out. I had the charm on the whole time. That'd be weird, if they got wings. Cool, though."

A brief chill ran through Bronwyn, leaving her uneasy, and a bit embarrassed, but all she said was, "I wonder if it's.. Your wings were implanted, right? You weren't born with them?"

Shayera nods. "Yeah. Full surgical grafting."

Bronwyn nodded, eyes fixed on the middle distance just over Shayera's wings. So they wouldn't just grow wings. And the charm makes her not miss them, since it would throw the others off if their reflexes kept expecting to have wings that weren't there... "It's the same charm from before you went to China, right?"

"No. It's improved. It's the one that swaps my outfit. The first one just hid the wings. I had to do the quick-change gig with the old charm."

"Okay. Do you think I could see both of them side by side some time?"

Shayera hems a little. "I mean, you could, but I'm not sure when. Like, if there's some sort of tracking spell in it, then Dad would know. Unless you think that's being too paranoid?"

"I can look at them as Bran too. Just, at some team meeting or something, or- Oh! Bring them both to the gala! Everyone will already know where you are then, and I can just find some time to sneak a peek!"

Shayera's opinion about the Gala does an immediate one-eighty. She'll be there! And... Oh, crap. We're broken up. Her original opinion reasserts herself. Bronwyn's plan to study the charms returns to her thoughts. "All right. I'll be using it, though. I'll want my action outfit ready. I don't want another qipao ruined. In case something crazy happens."

"Okay... I'll get a look at the old one, and then we'll just sneak off together to a private room and..." Bronwyn swallowed, eyes sliding down the length of Shayera's bodysuit.

Shayera's eyes dance as she makes that Gala thing really dizzy. That'll be fun, sneaking off with Bronwyn... er, or will it be Bran? "Will it be me and Bran? Or are you going as, you know, you? Though I know Bran is you. But I mean, you you."

I don't suppose she'll be wearing like, a burlap sack or something? "Both. I think. MB's been working on something for a while, but I think Cassie might really be able to get it to work, it's kinda out of MB's weight-class.

"And could you enjoy being distracting less?!"

"Wait. Distracting?" Shayera looked down at what she was wearing, squirming around against Bronwyn's grasp as she turned again to face her. "But, I needed to be stealthy. And it's not like I'm showing skin."

Bronwyn blinked, hard, dispelling the first few thoughts she had. Then a exaggeratedly suspicious look came over her face as she leaned in closer. "I wasn't talking about your bodysuit-thing, Shayera," Her arms hadn't left Shayera's waist once they'd settled there, but as she brought Shayera closer, one hand reached up between her shoulderblades, one gently cupped the small of her back, "But are you telling me you really don't know when you're driving me wild?" Shayera's cheeks flush. "I know, sometimes. But I don't know what it is that does it. I mean, I wonder sometimes. Since I don't, you know, have the same... instincts?"

"I mean... God, it can be everything about you, you know? Like, I'm sure my eyes are going to fall out of my head when you show up to the gala. But seeing you in something like this where every curve and line of muscle is hinted at..." Her hand trailed down the side of Shayera's hip, before jerking up to the side of her ribcage, then quickly correcting back to her waist. "It's... Umm..." She smiled a little distractedly, "Plus I don't get to hold you whenever I want anymore, and we're here all alone..." She leaned in again, resting against Shayera, cheek to cheek. "You're just amazing."

Bronwyn groaned quietly in frustration as she couldn't find the words to express herself. "I used to think she just didn't care enough about doing things the right way, but now I get why Gabby bent the rules with her fiance."

Shayera's eyes glisten and she smiles abashedly. When Bronwyn's face fills with frustration, that smile becomes one of pained sympathy. "I... you're so strong, Bronwyn. You can move buses, sure, but with your heart, you could knock the moon out of orbit." She cups Bronwyn's face and moves her head close for a kiss. "You'll do the right thing," she whispers. "We wil," Bronwyn corrected, gently.

As the kiss finished, Bronwyn finally remembered to ask, "So umm, this meeting. It's not just a-" booty call "-n excuse to see me, right?"

Shayera rubs the back of her neck. "Kinda? I feel so off-- I just had to know that I didn't just imagine that the breakup was fake." "I know what you mean." She blinked away the beginnings of tears she didn't want to explain.

"Oh! And I wanted to ask if you talked with Whippoorwill since the meeting? She was acting weird." "Umm, no. I mean, right afterwards sure. I kinda thought that if she didn't freak out and worry about the breakup, it might seem weird. So I tried to get her not to listen to the recording. You were right, by the way, she was recording. I figured either she'd talk to you where it was safe, or... there'd be a fight where people could listen." She winced, "Not really win-win, but... draw-win?"

Shayera nearly loses it, laughing through her nose. "You tried to get Whip to not know something? How'd that work?" "She hated it! But she actually agreed to go talk to you. I guess that's why she was so weird about it though..."

"Oh. Well, she came at me at the apartment, and she was sort of all over the map. But she's been kind of standoffish since." Bronwyn's mouth twisted, "Okay... I'm a lot less likely to be bugged. I can try to explain it to her if you like?" Shayera shrugged. "Okay, I guess. Or, I'll just have to find her while flying or something."

"Hey." Bronwyn squeezed Shayera's side, "Your m- Whip's just worried. It'll all be okay. And soon we'll be able to go back to normal..." Her face fell. "Hey, umm. Something I haven't been able to tell you in the middle of, God, everything that's been going on. My powers - Bran and everything. I might not have gotten them exactly the way I thought..."

Shayera looks at her intently, eyes sharpening to a familiar focus. "What do you mean? I thought you grabbed Gae-dearg and then boom, you became Bran. What else could it have been?"

"Well, when I was in the whole Elsewhere thing... I talked to Bran, or a Bran at least, he was a lot older, and bearded, and umm... beheaded." Shayera quirked a half-smile of disbelief. "He was beheaded. And he talked?" Bronwyn nodded seriously, "Yeah. More whispered. Not a lot of lung power. But he said, [smaller]or whispered, whatever, that Gae-Dearg wasn't his. Wasn't ever his."

Shayera's eyes went wide as she thought. "So, Bran's magic spear... isn't his? Then who does Gae-Dearg belong to?" "A different Celtic demigod, Diarmid O'Dyna. Which I knew was the 'real' myth, but I just thought the myth was wrong! 'Cause I knew the spear didn't turn everyone into Bran, so I figured... I don't know, I'd been picked?"

"Wow. So, is that a good guy or a bad guy?" "Good guy, mostly. Kind of a jerk sometimes though. But Bran and Branwen, Branwen was there too, as a bird, said that they didn't pick me. So, it wasn't them, and it wasn't just Gae-Dearg..."

"Huh." Shayera thought on that for a while. "What do you think it all means? He was beheaded? But when you become him, you're clearly not. So, I guess you're not really Bran after all? You just... wear him like a costume?"

A faraway look came over Bronwyn's face and she recited, "They stabbed him through the heart,
But his heart was long since broken by the wrongs done to Branwen his sister and he needed it not.
Yet upon their blades was a poison, which not even his strength could long endure.
So as the battle came to it's close, he bade his men to sever his head before the poison could spread thither. They did as he commanded, and for many years he counseled them with all the wisdom of his long rule...

"The biggest things about Bran that are consistent across all the different contradictory stuff Mary-Beth and I have dug up are that he was a Giant, or at least a really big guy, and he had power to blur the lines between life and death... So... I don't know what it means for sure that I got to meet an older version of him, but... It can't just be a costume. Like, why would I turn into him specifically? Why not some other big guy? Why do I change at all?!"

Shayera just shook her head helplessly, not having any answers to those questions.

"Yeah. Me too. I've been working with Cassie to figure out what's really going on. So umm... I told her that I'm Bran. I've had some weird reactions to her magic, or her mom's magic at least, so we think Bran might've crossed paths with Circe before." Her already blank face somehow grew stiller, "We both saw different sides of a... vision? Or a memory? I- He was trying to save... Well, I guess she'd kinda be Cassie's sister. And it hurt him to fail." Holding the girl she loved tight, Bronwyn couldn't help but think of the same terrible void she'd felt when Shayera had been taken from her.

He loved her...

Shayera enjoys the snuggles, wondering if they'll ever bring themselves to part before the sun starts to rise. But she looks up with a start when Bronwyn tells her that she'd told Cassie. It seemed somewhat odd; with the exception of Mary Beth, who knew before she had, only Shayera knew the real secret of Bron and Bran. She tamps out any feelings of jealousy, since it was Bronwyn's secret to share, but she still felt... a little melancholy about it. She studies Bronwyn's face with her own brow furrowed. "That's... weird. But, I guess it makes some sense. Figures from legend, like Circe, and, well, Bran. I wish Skuld was still here. She might know some stuff. But, it's good that there's someone else you can share this with." She smiles bravely at her. There. That's me, being understanding.

She didn't like that... I can tell her about Bran and Creirwy later I guess... "Hey, umm... I know it's late, but could you stay a little longer? I don't know when we're going to get to do this again, and... yeah."

Shayera folds her wings up tight and lets her head rest against Bronwyn's chest. "Sure. I mean, I have to give myself time to find the helicopter that has my pants, but that should only take a half hour, tops."

Wishing that Shayera hadn't definitely just heard her heart speed up, when she talked about finding her pants, Bronwyn quickly replied, "Great! I can get a low flame going in my forge so we have something warm to sit next to, and you can help me with my- Well, it's not quite homework technically, and it- well it was going to be a surprise for you once I was better at it, but then I didn't want you to think I was spying on you, but, umm... 我一直在學普通話. 我愛你."

Shayera jolts up like she'd been touched with a live wire. "Wow! Not bad!"

Bronwyn's face broke open in a relieved smile as a tension she'd been trying to ignore left her. "Thanks. I only know... about a thousand characters so far, so there's a long way to go."

"你上學多久了? she asks. Bronwyn grinned, "幾小時或幾天?"

"Wow. Impressive. At least it's Mandarin and not Cantonese. That's crazy difficult. I only know, like, a tiny fraction. But really? days?"

"There's a lot of hours in the night, and I have a terrifying green owl to appease."

Shayera looks confused. "You have a what?"

Bronwyn pulls out her phone and loads up her language-learning app with a cheeky grin. "See? A little winged-friend to teach me Mandarin. I'd rather spend the night with my slightly larger winged-friend of course..."

Shayera leans in with a playful grin and kisses Bronwyn. "Eres un tramposo. Ahora me vas a hacer salir y aprender galés."

="Noooo. Ese lenguaje es todo flema y siseo. Solo dime que me amas. No me importa cómo lo digas."

Shayera squeezes her tight. "برونوين ، أحبك بكل اللغات."

"You too."

As she walked into the clothing store, Kaoru attempted to push her confusion from her conversation with Chloe aside. She would have time to contemplate what she had learned later. For now she needed to focus on getting herself a suit. She was roughly equal parts nervous and excited about the prospect, the nerves largely coming from simply not knowing what to expect. She let her gaze wander carefully across the mannequins, admiring the different styles and color combinations. She was definitely going to get a vest. Maybe a couple of different color shirts. She was probably good on ties (though if she saw an especially pretty one, it certainly couldn't hurt to get another). Definitely none of that clip-on BS though. She was going to look so good! The most dapper of gents! Just like all the mannequins on display!

Or...was she? Sure, the clothes would fit well. But that didn't change the fact that she didn't exactly have the y-shaped body most men's clothes were designed to flatter. The body that mannequins had. The clothes looked amazing on them. But how would they look on her? Would they just...emphasize all the places where she was lacking? How narrow her shoulders were? Would they just-

Suddenly Chloe's smiling face popped up in front of her, interrupting her rapidly spiraling train of thought. "This is so great, Kay! We are going to make you the talk of the ball!" With an excited giggle, Chloe wrapped Kaoru in a brief, but tight hug before dragging her towards the back of the shop. "C'mon! I think the owner is just finishing up with another group. Let's go see if we can get his attention."

As they waited to get Alton's attention, Kaoru flashed Alexandra brief, nervous smile before quickly returning her focus to the owner. When he turned his gaze to her, she quickly spat out, "Uhhh, hi. I'm looking for a suit? A-a formal suit. Black-tie formal. With a vest. So a three-piece suit."

Chloe quickly pipped up. "Wool jacket, of course. Single breasted, two buttons." She continued to ramble off more specifics that would flatter Kaoru's body and appear classically fashionable instead of the more trendy fashion that tended to go in and out of style every few years. She answered all of Alton's style questions with ease as Kaoru stood back, slightly lost at the exchange. It wasn't that Kaoru didn't know fashion. She just...didn't know it quite at the level Chloe did. Which was probably why the red-head always managed to look good, even when she was dressed as simply as she was today in just a casual, knee-length green dress.

The only question that seemed to trip Chloe up was when Alton asked about what powers he needed to compensate for. She tilted her head questioningly at Kaoru, who in turn blinked and turned wide, pleading eyes at Alexandra, silently asking the more experienced hero what accommodations she should ask for. The look caused Chloe to raise an eyebrow as she turned her gaze to the brunette. A slight smile started to tug at the corner of her lips as she extended her hand to the other girl. "I'm sorry; I got so excited planning Kay's suit that I didn't realize you two knew each other. My name's Chloe."

Thursday, Rush Job's

"Yes, yes, you demigods and your weapons," Alton sighed. "I can tailor pants that might fit. As long as you have a proper strap for your shortspear," He noted. "If not, then tartan is your best option. Please make a decision while I finish the other young man's order."

When Kaoru and Chloe came in, Alexis was already trying on his own tuxedo, which fit him well enough. It even had enough give to endure his most vigorous motions. He was stretching up his arms and looking in the mirror when his eye caught the pair. He turned around swiftly and stared at Chloe.

Alton took Chloe's suggestions, glancing at Kaoru and nodding. "I should have it ready in twenty minutes. You may use the dressing room to try it on when it's finished, and I can make final adjustments."

"They are on the same bill," Alexis said from behind Chloe.

"That saves me a headache on asking who I charge then. I suppose I owe the bird for this influx of customers," Alton mutters as his hands sew faster and more accurately than any seeing machine.

The whole point of going bespoke is not having to worry about whether or not they'll fit! Why is he trying so hard to get me into a skirt anyways?! Uuuugggghhhhhhh I hate this, I hate this, I hate this! And didn't he just see me pull Gae-Dearg from Literally up my sleeve?

When Kaoru arrived, Bran had been trying on a test-fit shirt that had nearly had the length, and wasn't particularly close on the breadth. Unlike with the similarly ill-fitting jacket he'd tried before, he had elected to squeeze into the changing room rather than walk around topless, especially with Alexandra right there. When he heard Kaoru's voice though, he ducked and gradually worked his way through the narrow door frame to greet him. Who's his friend? Wait, are we actually supposed to be bringing plus ones? Okay, rule one of secret identity etiquette. If you don't know if someone's clued in, assume they aren't. There's not really a non-cape way that people interact with Bran, so that means he's just a stranger unless-

An unbuttoned dress shirt and too-tight sweatpants weren't really the kind of outfit that made you feel confident in meeting new people. He Must've known this wouldn't really fit. Sigh, this is what happens when you push back on how your tailor wants to dress you. I mean I bet it is at least...

Sometime after Alexandra decides what kind of things Kaoru's suit should compensate for/any interactions resulting from that (going to assume that Alexandra at least gave her name or Kaoru would have if she didn't)
As Alton put on the finishing touches of the suit he was currently working on, Chloe glided over to him to grab the tape, smiling sweetly. "Don't worry, sir, I'll get Kay's measurements for you." She briefly looked like she was going to ask Alexandra something, but then thought better of it, instead taking the hand of a puzzled Kaoru and leading the hacker over to one of the dressing rooms and closing the door behind them.

Once the door was shut, Chloe softly directed Kaoru to take off her shoes.

Keeping her voice equally low, Kaoru complied. "Are you sure you know what you're doing, Chlo?"

The redhead rolled her eyes as she directed Kaoru to raise her arms. "Taking someone's measurements aren't that hard. If you want, I can go outside and ask Alexandra to do it instead?" There was something weird about her tone that Kaoru could't place quickly enough before it turned thoughtful. "Hmmm, not sure she knows what measurements to take though."

"She could probably figure it out; she's really smart. What? Why are you looking at me like that?"

Chloe smiled. "Nothing. Though you probably don't want someone who doesn't know you're female doing this." She lightly tapped a knuckle against Kaoru's side to draw her attention to the measuring tape now wrapped tightly around her chest. "Since I know, I can make sure to do this without groping you. Someone who thought you were male might not be as careful."

Kaoru scratched her cheek awkwardly. "Oh, ummm...Alexandra already knows." At Chloe's surprised look, Kaoru quickly added, "Well, she figured it out! Like, first thing. I mean, I said she was smart. And she's like...really good at reading people. In a couple of second's she's already figured out how many pets you have, what your last meal was, and...I dunno...what kind of music you like or something." Kaoru shrugged, grimacing slightly as a stern look from Chloe ordered her to stay still.

"Ok then, next time I'll throw her in the dressing room with you. It might be a little awkward to bring her in now that I've already started. Plus, we do actually want to get your measurements done. Unless you'd like the nice store owner to measure your chest?"

Kaoru visibly paled. "Well...I mean...if he did that in an awkward way I could just...like...back off and tell him to be more careful?"

Chloe raised an eyebrow as she ran the tape around Kaoru's neck for her collar size. "You didn't see him measuring that other group there? He's got super speed or something. Did it all in a flash."

"But he..like...asked them first, right?" Kaoru's voice was a high squeak.

"No, I don't think so. Just did it. I was a little surprised he didn't even ask them to move properly to allow him to measure them. Just presumably used them like dolls to get all the angles he needed. Not sure how he managed to make sure they weren't slouching, but maybe he didn't care about that?" Kaoru looked a little like she was going to be sick, so Chloe used the fact she was measuring the girl's shoulders to wrap her in a tight hug. "Don't look like that, Kay. I'm sure he wasn't, like, perving on them or anything. He's probably just been doing this long enough that he's forgotten that it's sometimes important to slow down and take your time. That making sure your customer is comfortable and satisfied is more important than getting it done quickly. That not everybody is going to be okay with a stranger taking that much liberty with their body."

What Chloe said made sense, but it did nothing to ease the sick feeling in her stomach. A strange man had almost put his hands all over her without even asking. And she wouldn't have known it was about to happen until it was too late. She would have been helpless to stop him. And she would have had no idea what he had done to her. If she didn't need the suit by tomorrow, she would have considered walking out right then and there. Instead, she resolved never to return. "Hey, can you make me, like, a copy of those measurements?"

Chloe glanced up from where she was measuring Kaoru's arm. "Sure, Kay." She paused, interlocking their fingers and giving Kaoru's hand a comforting squeeze. "I'm sure he's a complete professional though. The kind that would never do something skeezy like take an inseam measurement on a girl in a skirt." She grinned at Kaoru's puzzled look before kneeling in front of her, one hand holding the end of the tape floor level before slowly trailing her other hand upwards along Kaoru's inner leg until the blushing hacker squirmed away, Chloe's hand only managing to reach an inch or two above her knee. Chloe let out a warm laugh as her friend's expression changed from one of intense anxiety to moderate embarrassment. "I'm actually supposed to reach right up to your groin for that. But see how awkward that would be if you were in a skirt?" She squeezed Kaoru's ankle affectionately. "But no, really, I do need to get that measured. I promise I'll be quick though! And I won't touch anything untoward! I'll be a total pro."

With a little bit more convincing, Chloe was able to get Kaoru's inseam. The remaining measurements weren't nearly as uncomfortable and took relatively little time to breeze through as well. As Kaoru put her shoes back on, Chloe took a quick picture of the measurements she had written down. She then edited a few of them to make sure the suit would comfortably hide any feminine aspects of Kaoru's body while still being well fit and flattering, taking another picture of the outcome.

The two of them exited the dressing room, Chloe going over to drop the measurements and tape measure off with Alton with a warm smile and her thanks. Spinning on her heel, she clapped her hands together, beaming at Kaoru. "Ok, colors next?" She beckons her over to where a sample book of fabric swatches sat. She held it up with an appraising eye, glancing between Kaoru, the book, and occasionally pensively staring over Kaoru's shoulder. "Hmm, something like navy blue or plum could work. No...since you're going formal with color highlights, we probably don't want to go contrasting. I'm guessing you want black suit instead of white?" Kaoru nodded. "In that case...how about paisley vest -- hunter green as the predominant color and ivory as the accent -- and a forest green...necktie? Bowtie?"

"Necktie." Kaoru asserted.

Chloe grinned. "Perfect~" She spun her friend around to face Alexandra, dangling her arms over Kaoru's shoulders in a loose embrace that allowed her to hold the fabric up for the other girl's perusal. "What do you think, Alexandra? Wouldn't Kay look absolutely dashing in that?" There was a playful glint to her eye as she waited for a response.

As Chloe walks in

Alexandra's eyes go a bit wide as she debates whether to try to mitigate Kay's slight figure, or try to work with it. and she starts giving commands. Okay, this wasn't Ideal. Chloe. SO good to meet you she says. Good job, Already slipped up. Save it.

I'm Alexandra, I'm sure Kay has already filled you in about me. she says, as she takes the attractive girls hand. the ATTRACTIVE girl? Have you paused to consider maybe you're more into girls that this thing with Kay? No, Not right now. you can play around with the kinsey scale later.

then the two go into the dressing room. and Alexandra goes scarlett. I'm not jealous, Kaoru wasn't into her last time, and I don't know for sure she is into Kay... She fumes for minutes, looking at ties What's kay's costume colour?

when they get out, and Chloe continues Barking orders. and THEn asking her opinion. Normally, sure, Kay would look lovely, but for our event, right now... I think the secondary colour, that is to say, vest colour, should be For some reason I have Kay's costume as purple-indigo in my head... accurate?. Just... traditional. she says, starign at the girl. what did she know...

Read Chloe: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 3) + 2 = 6 going to spend a team selfishly, because she is absolutely violating Kay's privacy... again. and because she's misusing her powers for personal gain, I'll shift mundane up, savior down.

what does she intend to do?

Really? She had to measure him right away? And in private? I kinda wanted to get out of this shirt, and there's sort of a line!

He glanced around, Bran's normally implacable equanimity already strained by the unending awkwardness of this trip, when he noticed Alexandra's unmistakable jealousy.

Did they not have The Talk? She definitely doesn't look like she's completely certain of what's going on in there... I should say something... Like uh... "Worry not Alexandra. I am certain that unlike you, he is not kissing another."

Flawless. 10/10. Even the Russian judge isn't giving a low score to that one, Bron.

Wait, is this Chloe girl Kaoru's old flame? Alexandra's definitely acting like it, and she'd probably know... But then... that wouldn't be weird at all if he dated her? Unless it was before he transitioned? No... I don't buy it. No way was he self-assured enough to publicly be in a gay relationship. Especially with as WEIRD as his ideas are of what lesbians are like? Though he did think there needed to be 'the boy' in a relationship... Maybe-

Whatever, complicated. Not enough known. Not important right now anyways.

Got it, I'll just say "____"

Wow. I've Really got nothing.

How long are they going to be in there anyways? I'd really like to change, Alexandra might actually catch fire, and I am NOT taking off my shirt in front of her while she might do something stupid to make Kaoru jealous.

He glanced down at his barely covered torso with a quiet sigh. ...Not like I don't already look like the cover of a romance novel already...

When Chloe and Kaoru emerged, thankfully neither of them looking disheveled, he meant to duck into the changing room immediately, but couldn't help but watch, inwardly flinching as Chloe and Alexandra discussed ties. Kaoru's going to be like a tree in mountain lion territory before long...
Huh, blue's fairly standard, but plum and green aren't quite as formal, so I'm surprised she's going with... ohhhh.
A small grin flickered across his broad features as long conversations with her mom and Gabby bubbled up in her memories. Chloe's Definitely spent a lot of time thinking about how to bring out his eyes...

After only a few minutes with Chloe's measurements and suggestions, Alton has a fully formed tuxedo ready for Kaoru. "I've added several interior pockets for various items you may need that won't mar the lines, as long as you keep them thin. The material is blade resistant and flame-retardant, flexible enough should you require any extensive physical activity, and spillproof," He tells her as he gives it a spritz with a water bottle. The droplets run off of the jacket like it was a duck's back.

"I've made something similar for you," He said as he turned to Bron, handing over the much larger and heavier suit. "As requested, I went for a more traditional style. Please try it on and let me know if you need some adjustments made. I did allot enough room for you, if I haven't made an error."

Alexis was trying on his own suit, looking at Chloe still and pondering what this girl's relationship was to Kaoru. He didn't know her, and she was ignoring him. Or just completely focused on Kaoru, and now Alexandra, that he felt inconsequential. Which made him angry. He was the one who'd suggested this place to everyone. Why did this stranger have to suddenly crash in and wreck the dynamic?

Why was he even upset? Kaoru clearly hated him. Why else would he tell her he didn't want to date and then go right around and start dating Alexandra? It felt unfair to him in a lot of ways. He found himself pushing between Kaoru and Chloe, giving the shorter boy his biggest smile.

"Do you like this store? I think it is great. I am really glad that you accepted my invitation to come," Alexis stressed. "You should go try on your tuxedo."

Bron:
The tuxedo fits almost perfectly, aside from being a little tight in the crotch.

Kaoru:
Not only does the suit fit Kaoru perfectly, it seems to make their shoulders look a little broader and waist a little wider.

@Alexandra: Kaoru doesn't really have an official costume. Both times you've seen her "dressed up," she was dressed nicely due to a lack of other things to wear, but the only consistency between the two outfits was that they were predominantly black (which makes sense since one of those two times you were trying to be stealthy to break in to the SCA)

What does [Chloe] intend to do?
Chloe intends to make Kaoru look dapper as fk for the gala. With some good alternative options, so Kaoru can look just as dashing on future occasions when dressed up.

"No, I'm afraid Kay and I haven't had much of a chance to catch up yet. I only just arrived in town. Don't worry though; I'll definitely make sure to pump him for all the details."

After the dressing room

Alexandra wrote:

From her position right behind Kaoru, Chloe tilted her head. "Really? Huh. Traditional as in just black and white? Or were you thinking something else?" She gave a grin. " These colors would do a great job bringing out-" She's cut off as Alexis attempts to force his way between the non-existent space between Chloe and Kaoru. The two of them both lost their balance and with Chloe's arms already looped about Kaoru's body, when she was unable to regain her footing, she inevitably dragged Kaoru down with her. The two of them landed in a heap, Kaoru on top.

Kaoru felt the lingering anger in her chest flicker back into existence as she glared at the boy from the floor. "What the fk, Alexis? Watch where you're going! What the hell is-"

She was interrupted as Chloe started giggling, pulling Kaoru's head to her shoulder as she began soothingly scratching the back of her head, causing Kaoru's mouth to snap shut. "It's okay, Kay." She grinned, both at the repetitiveness of the statement and from her amusement at the situation. "We're not hurt, and I'm sure he didn't mean to, right?" Still smiling she turned her baby blues on the new boy. Kaoru started to protest, but Chloe just shushed her. "C'mon now. Be nice." Kaoru scowled but nevertheless backed down from her planned tirade, instead opting to enjoy the feeling of Chloe's fingers in her hair. Still smiling, Chloe reached her free hand up and out to Alexis. "Help us up?"

Thursday after school

Shayera and her Sisters were exploring the deep recesses of her closet, trying on a dizzying number of cocktail and formal dresses. As the pile of rejected formal wear grew, Shayera was beginning to think that despite her copious amount of clothing, she wouldn't find the right dress.

<Just wear the qipao, Xiu Ying,> Yu Hiu says, sensing Shayera's growing frustration.

She gestures to the four hanging up. <Which one? My wings'll be out, so I'll tear through the back of three of them, and the off-the-shoulder one's back isn't low enough. I'll feel like I'm falling out of it.>

<You don't have big enough breasts for that worry,> Shu Zi says with a giggle. <And Bronwyn might like that,> Yin adds, causing Xiu Ying to flush.

<The goal is to give her a treat, not an aneuryism,> she replies flatly, though her cheeks still feel warm. <I think a Western-style dress is what I'm going to have to go with. There's-->

<What's this one?> Yu Hiu asks, pulling out a sleek, golden floor-length gown. <It looks too long for you.>

"I saw that and got it for Whippoorwill. I'm pretty sure the designer used her outfit for inspiration; the gold-yellow is a glammed-up version of her color scheme. I never found the right time to give it to her, and sort of forgot about it." She fingers the elegant material as she wonders if her mentor even had a dress for this Gala, or if she was planning on just going in her regular outfit.

"I'm going to fly this over to her. Pick me out a dress while I'm out?"

Her sisters look devious as Shayera feels a strange undercurrent of glee suddenly. Whoa. That's what that feels like. Putting that out of her mind, she puts the dress in a garment bag and flies off to Whippoorwill's penthouse.

=========================

... continue cross-referencing the energy signatures and get back to me. There's a pattern here, I'm just not -- all right, yeah." Whippoorwill cuts off her link with Matrix and swivels around in her chair to face Shayera when she entered her command room.

"Um, hey. Peace offering?" she says, holding up the garment bag. What is it with me and giving away clothes? Shayera suddenly thinks.
