Madness In London Town (Inactive)

Game Master DSXMachina

Call of Cthulhu, set in the 1920's.

Here is the discussion thread for the game, come in here for all your queries, Out of Character talk. Or general chatter :)

Below is a tab for text formatting.
I have sent you the PC information that you can edit into your Alias.

Using [ ] rather than ( )
Bold (b) Words (/b) is for speech.
Italics (i) Words (/i) is for thoughts
Out of Character (ooc) Words about other stuff(/ooc) is for out of character RL chat.
For dice rolling (dice)1d100(/dice) with []gives 1d100 ⇒ 94

Of course this formatting is optional, but it makes it easier to read. Prose don't have to be brilliantly written.

So here we are.

91/111hp Dark Reckoner Warlock

Chris here!

Here is an example of a PC stats (note that one of the 3d6 becomes 2d6+6 - I'll check the book when I am home);

Stats:

STR: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 3) = 11
DEX: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 3) = 5
CON: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1) = 6
SIZ: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 3) + 6 = 15
INT: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1) = 7
EDU: 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 2, 6) + 3 = 12
APP: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 4) = 12
POW: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5) = 8

You roll 3 sets, feel free to swap any stat in it's set around. Any queries?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

INT is the other stat that is 2d6 + 6, so if you can amend that for your characters. :)

APP is appearance and how pretty/handsome your character is.
POW is Power and a sort of luck or strength of will or flexibilty of thought.
EDU is education.
SIZ is size, obviously.
STR is strength
DEX is manual dexterity and physical agility, combined with precision.
CON is constitution and robustness of health.
INT is Intelligence, I don't know what this is ☺

Background / Description:
Edward Lewis Pitt. 32 yo, 3rd son from a wealthy family. Initially wanted to be an explorer or missionary like Livingstone. Studied Anthropology, Natural science and Religion at Cambridge University. Where I excelled on the rowing team, being part of the winning team in the 1914's boat race.

Was stationed in an office in Egypt & later in the Arabic peninsula during the war, where I became fluent in Arabic and took an interest in Archeology.
Mostly did intelligence work or reporting on the internal situation or on the field. My biggest moment were reporting on the progress of the arab revolt throughout Palestine.

I worked a few years in close ties with a news agency in London before parting ways as I felt pressured to produce certain types of stories I wasn't thrilled on.
I now work as a private reporter, finding news worthy of my readers attention. I particularly thrive on the strange and the bizarre, all that surprises or astonishes.

You basically get an hour to edit the post after that it's unalterable. To put all this PC info in your alias; click on the character name - then "Edit My Profile" - add all the info in the box, save changes and then it's in there.

The plan is to borrow a module from Matt or get one in Birmingham and start next week (posssibly if everyone has time).

That's looking really good, I'll mail Matt about his character. Kim & Etienne have both queried "Edges & Hinderances" - I'll see if Matt has the current lists & PC's can take up to 10 points (at my discretion - beautiful edge = +1APP not +5)

btw we got lots of really interesting games including 'Fistful of Penguins!'

Edges & Hinderances Mailed out... Post any queries here or reply.

Matt here.

I've finally got my account set up and will be rolling my character attributes and choosing my skills very soon (honest).

Matt

Here are my three sets of attribute rolls:

Set 1

3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1) = 4
3d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5) = 12
3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4) = 6
3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1) = 8
3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3) = 11
2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9
2d6 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4

Set 2

3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 5) = 13
3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 3) = 10
3d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 3) = 9
3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 5) = 12
3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 4) = 12
2d6 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5
2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7

Set 3

3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 2) = 9
3d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 4) = 9
3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1) = 7
3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 4) = 7
3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4) = 12
2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11
2d6 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6

Wow, those are some truly terrible rolls! I think I will go for set 2.

I'll post again over the weekend with my completed character.

Cheers,

Matt

Matt, have a +1 to all those rolls. They are even worse than the ones I rolled last night! I kick Kim now.

It's set in 1920 London. Just after the Great War. (The Allied Powers must have played alot of cards to enable the Americans to join :P)

You might be glad to hear we won't be playing the scenario; 'Ancient Midget Nazi Shamans!'

I'll get up the gameplay thread later today.

So, Jerry & Edward are old school chums, Jerry & Kim's PC are cousins. And Aysha knows Edward and probably Jerry.

Here's my almost completed character. I just need my background now:

Hey Guys,

It is Kim. Sorry I have been so slow getting anything out. I hope to get stuff sorted this week. Here is some background on my Character at least.

And Stella was her name.........

Ever since her childhood Stella has always been an ambitious sort. Many people said that was due to her being the only child to the Mahoney family for many years. They owned a large horse ranch out in Texas near San Antonio. They were a very caring and loving family. They had hoped to have a large family but after years of trying they only had one other child, a son. At the time Stella's brother was born she was already ten years old and running a muck of the entire ranch. She stepped up to the plate early on helping with the cleaning and grooming of the horses and taking great pleasure in her daily riding lessons. She was a very active and hands on driven child because of that she never truly excelled at school. She found it boring and school work mundane. Mostly due to the constant drilling of lessons and having to listen and sit for long periods of time. Patience was never one of Stella's virtues.

Overall, as Stella grew from that of a child to an adult she never really stuck to social norms on any level. For instance she didn't grasp the concept of wearing a skirt or a dress. She baulked at the color pink and anything that presented a hint of girl like features such as ruffles or lace. She was an outgoing person and lived by the seat of her pants type gal. She always stuck to trousers and linen tops. Wearing a cowboy hat and boots. The only girlish flair she perhaps added to her outfit was that of a red linen scarf she would tie around her neck.

She lived life as an adventure never thinking to slow down. When life seemed a bit dull she would hop on her horse and take off and ride for miles. She was also very competitive trying to best any man anyway she could. Be that shootin, trappin, huntin or participating in a good old fashion round up there was nothing Stella Mahoney couldn't do. The only problem is that when a girl grows into a woman it is time especially during the 1920s for a woman to take a man.

The south didn't see too kindly to one like Stella being let loose among the world unless she was tied down to a man of course and trust me Stella's parents did try to find her a man. For years they would bring a likely suitor out to the ranch and within one hour the man would either be left hogged tied on the porch or running from the property in fear of his life from one stunt or another that Stella would pull. It was a very difficult time for her family. So, Stella's parents had many discussions concerning the problem which at times would turn into arguments anytime Stella was involved. After years of failed attempts to get Stella to agree to a suitor her parents finally cooked up a plan they thought Stella could never refuse and presented the idea to her on her twentieth birthday.

They said, “Stella, if you would agree to marry a man who we pick out for you when you turn twenty-one then we will allow you to go on one last grand adventure and pay for it ourselves. It could be anywhere in the world as long as you are back in one's year's time. We just hope and pray that you keep your wits about you and remain safe and out of danger. We have already been in contact with your cousin Jerry in London who would be able to join you and show you around England for a start if traveling overseas strikes your fancy but please go now and think on it.”

After hearing this from her parents Stella was a mix of emotions. Should I stay? Or should I embark on what could be the most thrilling experience of my life? One last grand adventure? Well, I think we all know what decision she made. Life was about to turn into something a bit more interesting and perhaps a little bit more than what she suspected.....

Really cool, backstory. :)

I'll just change your spoilered post slightly.

Hey Chris, I posted my stats but they are all pretty bad. So, not sure which roll to even take. Let me know what you think and I will go with whatever. I think the digital dice on this website hate me.

Feel free to either take the same rolls as any other character (but you can rearrange them) or add one to all your stats - the second set is alright with that.

9, 11, 15, 4!, 16, 14, 10, 16

Is very good.

Hi Im not really sure how to play so I will wait to check with Etienne. How do I decide what to do? And how do my skills (or lack there of) come into play?
Thanks

sorry flubadub is me! Im such an amateur!!

Good idea Chris. I will just go with the numbers below. Hopefully have my character completely finished by Friday. Thanks!

It's alright, it's everyones 1st time with this format.

So, what you do is type what your character is doing, saying and if you want feeling. What you type you do.

You might type... "Aysha enters the ballroom, looking stunning. Grabbing a flute of champagne she circulates. Starting with *Random made up person*, she asks him what he has been doing recently."

Skills come into play when you do something complicated, that your Aysha might not be able to do.

For example, "Aysha drives at high speed away from the party weaving between traffic."

You then might add a roll in there, using the in built dice-roller {dice]1d100{/dice} trying to roll lower than your skill.

Hey Mahya,

Don't worry about being new to this. I am totally new to this and just getting the hang of it. I had no clue how to make a character and well you got yours posted before mine! You are doing great and I am really glad to have you along for the ride. Just think of this as a story from a book and each character is part of that story. The only difference is instead of the story being set in stone we can go change the direction the story takes by the decisions our characters make. I think it is going to be a lot of fun. I posted something on the gameplay area maybe that will help. I plan on having my character done by Friday. So, you are already WAY ahead of me! lol

Hey Chris,

I realized one of the rolls was a 4? I am going to reroll and see if I get anything better than a 4. I don't like the idea of taking someone else's stats.

Roll 1

3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 6) = 10
3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2) = 9
3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 4) = 15
3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 4) = 13
3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 6) = 16
2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7
2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4

Roll 2

3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 6) = 15
3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4) = 15
3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 4) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 3) = 6
3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 1) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 4) = 16
2d6 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6
2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4

Roll 3

3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 3) = 10
3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 1) = 6
3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1) = 6
3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6) = 10
3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 3) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 5) = 16
2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4
2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11

Hey Chris...I am sooo going with Roll 2 and adding 1 to it. Hope that is alright. Hehe. Will be posting a character soon if that works for you.

Yep, that's great. The main thing is people are happy with their characters.

Jerry's Background

Jerry McNaughton has only known privilege all of his life. His father is Kenneth McNaughton Baron of Kinnaird, a peer of the realm and also an influential financier.

Jerry was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh and at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, although he was never a particularly good student, preferring sporting pursuits, particularly Rugby Union and Athletics.

After University Jerry went to work for one of his father's company's, but it he hardly took it seriously, spending most of his time on the social scene. Life was good and easy. Then the war came.

Like everyone else, Jerry thought that the war would be over by Christmas. When the war didn't end with a swift victory, Jerry decided to sign up. That was in late Spring 1915. He volunteered for the Royal Air Corps and started his basic training. By Summer 1915 he was flying reconnaissance missions over Northern France. By the following year he had been transferred to Egypt and was flying S.E.5s against the Turks.

To be continued....

Jerry's Edges and Hindrances

Edges

Brave 2
Brave characters always lead the way and will never shirk from a challenge. Being brave doesn’t mean that they are foolish, however, and they will not charge blindly into any situation. Characters with this edge get a +25 bonus to Public Speaking when attempting to spur on their comrades. They also get a +1 bonus to all Initiative tests.

Contacts 2
Your character knows a lot of people in different places. These people can be valuable sources of information and may even provide limited assistance if the character needs it. However, such assistance probably won’t be given freely.

Eloquent 2
Your character is extremely eloquent. Add a special +15 bonus to one of the following skills or a special +5 special bonus to all of them: Instruction, Persuade, and Public Speaking.

Light Sleeper 1
A character with this Edge is more likely to wake up if he/she hears or senses anything unusual or out of place while asleep. As a result he/she gains a special +25 bonus to any Senses rolls made while asleep and also suffers no penalties to action from having just been asleep.

Hindrances

Allergy 1 (Damned Cats)
Your character has an allergy to one animal or substance. Exposure causes sneezing, rashes, fainting, itching and disorientation. The severity of the Allergy depends upon the value of the Hindrance.

Code of Honor 3 - Shooting a man in the back is jolly bad form.
Your character lives by a specific code of honour. He/she generally treats all people with respect, unless they do or have done something that does not deserve such respect. He/she won’t attack an unarmed foe, stab or shoot someone in the back. On the plus side, your characters honourable nature will be obvious to others and provides a +10 bonus to friendly Persuade and Public Speaking tests.

Curious 3 - I wonder why the Prof is acting so strange...?
Any time your character is confronted with a mystery he/she must do everything in his/her power to try to solve it, no matter how dangerous the situation might be.

Intolerance 1 (Turks) - Savages all of them....
Your character does not get along with certain types of people. He is likely to insult and provoke such people. The level of intolerance indicates how likely your character is to insult and provoke.

Obligation 2 – Look after Cousin Stella.
Your character is obligated to his/her family, a friend, his community or has a duty of some sort that he/she must perform. The higher the value of the obligation, the more frequently it should be inconvenient.

Edges

Hi Chris, I added Contacts previously, when I actually wanted Allies. I'll strike that one. I've also added Contortions with my final points.

Allies 2
Your character has friends who can help him/her out. The value of these friends depends on how powerful they are and how often they might be in a position to assist.

Contortions 3 (20%)
Your character is able to twist and bend his/her body and joints in ways that most people can't. This allows him/her to perform a variety of useful activities such as being able to slip bonds and gain access to buildings through small windows and vents. Your character gains Contortions as a new skill. The bonus is 10% if it is a 1 point Edge with a further 5% for each additional point spent.

Cool, that's great. Like the phrases for your edges/hinderances - very flavourful. I'll put somethig together for your contacts, or feel free to state them; like Etienne did with Bernie the Maitre-D.

Loving the RP so far.

I stole that idea from Kim, but don't tell her.... I need to add some phrases for my edges as well.

It's going well so far. Can't wait to get to the Gala.

Matt

Oh, regarding tonight: I'll be home from work at 6ish, so feel free to come over any time after that. I was thinking Take-Away (probably Chinese, as usual?)

Adam will be coming over too, so it'll be a full house!

We can play the Therion Game 011? And maybe some others?

I have only a couple of beers in, but loads of lager. I maybe able to grab some more.

Hahahaha...Matt, I love the fact you STOLE my idea. It just continues to show how incredibly awesome I am.

@ Chris - I doubt that beer will last long with you and Adam around. Tell him I said "HI." lol

Sounds good. Laurel and I are aiming to get to yours for 7:00pm. I'll bring over some beers.

Hi Kim. Don't get carried away. I was trying to be magnanimous. I'm sure that somewhere in the past I gave you the idea...., so it probably is mine. Mwuhaha!!

Thanks Chris

Looks like you had a great time yesterday Kim! That t-shirt looks really colourful & nice. We played a couple of games last night, including trying to find a fabulous organ.

Jerry's Background

Here's Jerry's full background:

Jerry McNaughton has known only privilege all of his life.

By the start of the following year he had been transferred to Egypt and was flying S.E.5s against the Turks.

Jerry developed into an extremely competent pilot; certainly there were more showy pilots and some were better, but Jerry knew how to get the job done with the minimum of fuss and without taking unnecessary risks. Then one day in April 1917 Jerry's plane suffered mechanical failure over Gaza and he was forced to crash land behind enemy lines. Thus began what was to become the defining period of his life.

Marooned behind the Turkish lines, Jerry was initially forced to survive on his wits and what little equipment he had brought with him in the plane. Unable to get back across the British lines Jerry contented himself with trying not to get captured. During this time he was to experience one scrape after another: starting with freeing several British prisoners of war, including one Michael MacKinley - his future valet; starting a campaign of guerilla warfare that caused the Turks no end of headaches; getting himself shot in the arm; and suffering a bout of Montezuma's Revenge. By the time the British captured Jerusalem in December 1917, Jerry and his band had engaged in exploits worthy of a ripping yarn. They returned to normal duty for the remainder of the war, with Jerry going back his old unit of the Royal Air Corps.

After the war Jerry returned home to Engand, bringing Michael with him to act as his valet, and taking up his old job at his Father's import/export company. This time he took it a little more seriously, but found the return to civilian life a little dull. The three years since the end of the war haven't diminished his desire for adventure.

With 1921 nearly at an end, Jerry hopes that 1922 will be the year.

:)

Awesome by everyone, sorry my eloquence is a bit rusty atm. I'll pop something up after work.

Etienne & Mahya are in France! So they probably won't be on-line for a week or so... Probably have more fun things to do if they could get On-Line!

Feel free, to do whatever you want. & talk to NPC's

BTW Matt here is the players guide for thursdays game.

Kingmaker guide

I'll have a print out on thurs, along with your PC.

Cheers Chris.

Hi Chris,

I meant to ask you this last week, but forgot to: I was looking at my character and realised, given the background I wrote after rolling it up, that Jerry's Shotgun and Handgun skills should be the other way around.

This is what I have currently:

Handgun (20%) 45%
Shotgun* (30%) 60%

This is what I would like to change it to:

Handgun (20%) 60%
Shotgun* (30%) 45%

Is that okay?

Cheers,

Matt

That's fine. Makes sense, too. I'll get you a reply up soon.

So the 4 of us'll meet up and play the rest of the scenario.

We can have some tasty food and some moody music!

It'll probably only take a session or 2, was thinking maybe some time during the week? I know Mahya & Etienne are busy many a weekend.
