Well, it's hard to imagine a school with only 40 students. But I can see 40 students that are potentially significant. I think that that is a good level to have. Maybe have like five of each somewhat fleshed out and the others have just the basics to fill out.
I'm thinking of a google spreadsheet so we can all see it and fill it out. Name, gender, details and then a column for each PC to note their interactions. It could be just sharing classes to romance.

Yu wanders between any unassigned beds. Right now, Yumei might have replaced a girl Alex hexed, but she's just moved in. She brought a few empty cardboard boxes and stuffed them under the bed.

40 students we'll encounter in the classes and hangouts we share, who may or may not bunk with us, but will bunk with each other, and even that may be relevant.
I'd love to have a classmates sheet linked to the thread so we can have that sort of information collected.
I think that paired rooms (possibly with a few triples sprinkled throughout) is the way to go. It allows everyone to instantly have a relationship with built in friction and friendship possibilities in a way that could get kinda spread out if we had bigger dorms.
And of course, for every person we relate to, we will likely interact with their roommates at some point.

I'm excited about the grape vine. How something we do in front of Janelle gets parotted to another PC by her b$!@# roommate in a twisted telephone game.
I'd agree that even 40 students per year level seems small,.... Maybe 20-30 core students plus a whole lot of extras in the background (i.e. they don't generally impact the story in a meaningful way)? This provides a pool of new characters/plot elements whenever required and can assumed to be mostly just part of the scenery... the crowd at the ballgame, the victims who run screaming, the people dancing in the background at the prom etc.
Kind of like how most shows / movies work?
P.S. I'm not from the USA and, therefore, have only a vague idea of the terms freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. Would I be right in guessing that:
freshman = 14 -15 years old
sophomore = 15-16 years old
junior = 16-17 years old
senior = 17-18 years old

Either way is fine with me... I have no idea how big private schools (or, indeed, state schools) are in the states... I can only go off films/TV etc.
40 does seem possible for an exclusive private high school. My highschool was a good bit bigger, but ny Junior high class was only 30!
My graduating class was about 400 students. 1600 students in all. 25-30 students per class. (Public school in the midwest)
That was about the size of my high school class too, but I think Lone Oak has a distinctly different vibe

Missed that earlier. I was thinking typical popular kid cruelty, but that's obviously pretty vague. I get the sense that you don't just hex people at random, so I'd actually prefer to see what would draw your wrath.
Oh, and speaking of Taryn, any objection to adding her in or swapping her for one of the randomly generated classmates on the spreadsheet?

Exact class schedules might be better left slightly vague anyways. That way the person you really don't want to deal with right now can always be in your class :p

I'm assuming Mindy is more the Dracula "A little subdued in sunlight" than the Buffy "I'm on fire!". Of course, she could always get a doctors note saying she has Xeroderma Pigmentosa and can't be exposed to UV light. (though I would suggest not claiming the version that progressively affects intelligence)

Well, that was quite the establishing Character moment for Carrie, and apparently Mindy has poor Marie hypnotized.
But, before we begin, There's a little conversation we should have. Specifically limits. this game is designed to create emotional reactions. it is about having an incredibly s+~@ty time in high school, and there can be lines. I'm gonna open the floor right now, and ask if anyone has hard or soft lines, things you want to not be included, or to veil.
Here's my two (though, I may discover I have more): 1.) sexual assault: I'm okay with the topic being broached (though, if someone else isn't It won't be), With Pc's being perpetrators (or victims, but I think I mostly control that half) of sexual asssualt, hard line there
2.) Sex: There's a veil here, as soon as it's clear sex will take place, we stop there, use the mechanics for the game, and then skip to the aftermath (you kiss your lover passionately,and you to fall into bed, fade to black, come to with you two talking, covers over yourselfs. Pg-13 movie style. or you unzip your dress and shut the broom closet door, fade to black, come back with you and your partner quietly slipping out of the closet, clothes somewhat ruffled). I have seen scenes descend into badly written erotica, I'd like to not see it happen here.
