Vira looks thoughtful. You are calling it basic membership. Does that mean that there are more memberships?

Terran nods. There is our most popular, VIP Membership. It costs 3 magic artifacts per month. And then we have our Premium membership. It costs 1 major magic artifact per month.

Drazh leans over and whisperes to Ebonfeather. "This is a setup. Vira knew about this, an' they're tryin' to fleece us. Obviously they're workin' together. I don't trust any o' this."


Say we wanted to go to the... vault with the magic weapons that can supposedly save the town above. What would we have to do for access to that? Vira asks.

Access to the tunnel to the Vault you speak of is included in the premium membership. Terran replies.

WHAT? You can't just control access to the vault! The city I worked so hard to build is going to be destroyed if we don't get to that vault! Vira yells.

Drazh crossed his arms at this. He still wasn't pleased. They were sent by the town's mayor to find 'lost' magical artifacts, without telling them that they were actually in possession of a collection of powerful mages hiding beneath said town. And the only way to get in was to find a 'major' magical artifact, when they were still carrying around mundane items. And even if they got in, they'd then have to steal said items. He sighed.

"Look, lets end this charade, eh? Obviously we aren't wizards. Look. Nay robes. Nay pointy hat. Big fookin' hammer. Sharp sword. Bow. Iffin' we could sling spells we'd nay need this. However, ye can help yeself by helpin' us. We found this place in under a day. The orcs, they'll have an army to do the same, they'll also have their own shamans n' mages n' whatnot. Help us beat them back, an' ye'll be savin' yeself a world a trouble, eh?"


Terran looks at Drahz and shrugs.

Vira reaches into her cloak and pulls out a small dagger. This one is not like the others. The blade is pink, and the hilt has a small heart inscribed on it. This, she says (holding the dagger to his face) is the legendary Knife of Heartbreaking. Once per day, I can instantly kill a victim of its stab - no buts. Now, let us in there or I may just use it on you.

Terran looks quite scared. He quickly produces five silver cards, drops them on the floor, and then bolts towards the doors behind you. Vira picks up on of the cards, pockets the dagger, looks towards the rest of you, and says Let's get going, shall we?

Umberto can't quite figure out what is going on with Vira and the mages' guild. He shrugs his shoulders again, picks up one of the cards and puts it in his belt pouch, and says, "Yes, let's."

Daphne, like Umberto, is not following what is going on. She again positions herself so she is walking behind Vira as they move with her crossbow pointed squarely at her back.

"He bought that? Are we sure we really want these guys to identify any of this stuff?"

Shrugging, Ebonfeather falls in line and waits for the magical wards to detonate.


Vira smiles. Lucky for us, the legendary Heart Blades all look alike - it takes a lifetime of study and experience to tell them apart.

And with that, she swings open the door revealing a large ballroom with tables surrounding a central dance floor. Magical music is playing with no discernible source.

Stranger and stanger. I'll be glad once these orcs are defeated and I can go back to living in the normalcy of the woods.

Ebonfeather also grabs a card and enters the door, looking around for additional doors that might lead to the identifier.

Daphne grabs a card as well and follows the other. Her focus is squarly on Vira as they walk.

The others can look for suprises, I still think Vira may be a surprise of her own.

Umberto tries to sense whether or not Vira is telling the truth while following her into the dance hall. He tries not to, but the music and the lights compel him to move to the rhythm. A moment later, he is dancing in the middle of the dance floor. He motions for the ladies to join him.

Those sense motives checks do not tell you anything. As you enter the room, however, a man sitting at one of the tables near the entrance arises and walks towards you. He stops a few feet away (out of reach of swords).

Always a pleasure seeing an old friend. He says to Vira.

Vira glares at him. Why yes, I suppose seeing old friends is fun. Sadly we are not your friends, Derek. I would advise you leave us in peace.

As she is saying this, several burly men are arrising from various tables and slowly making their way towards her. Umberto and anyone on the dance floor are ignored. The other people on the dance floor continue dancing as if nothing is happenining.

Umberto, the people dancing are pretty amazed by your dance.

Maybe I should find a less divisive town to help out with the orc menace and leave this one?

"Gentleman, whatever quarrel you have with Vira, I am afraid it will have to be put on hold for the time being.

We all hold freshly printed premium membership cards, and need to get to the vault in order to save the town above. You know... from being overrun by the swiftly approaching ARMY OF ORCS.

Perhaps you can put your individual squabbles aside until the town is safe again?"

Then again, maybe you can simply continue having a dance party while sitting next to a dragon's hoard of barely guarded magical items and hope that orcs don't know how to navigate tunnel systems. Sheesh...

Derek stares at Vira with a cold hatred - the kind that someone gets when they hold a grudge for too long and it slowly grows and grows until it consumes them, controlling their ever action and corrupting their every word.

His hand doesn't leave the hilt of his sword, but he steps to the side and motions for his henchmen to do the same.

Vira starts forward towards the back of the dance hall.

A tall man in a fancy suite and a woman in a flowy dress (one of the dancing couples) approach Umberto. Young man, the man says, your dancing is quite impressive, although your singing is... less so. He then hands you a handful of coins totaling 13 gp (this mage community is a serious victim of inflation - just think, that perform check would make you at most 3 coppers in the city.)

A short, burly man in a red vest walks up to you.
I am the identifier. Now, come with me to my office. He says.

And with that, he starts walking to the side of the ballroom, towards a simple wooden door.

Umberto follows the short, burly man to his office, eager to have the magic items in his possession identified so they can be put to good use. He is still amazed that they should be allowed to rob the mage guild's store room, then pay the mages with stolen goods to identify the very goods that were stolen.

As with the others Daphne follows. She has the ring that was deemed magic before as well as the two rods she pocketed before to be identified.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 is he telling the truth when he identifies her items?


Hold off on that Daphne, he's still leading you to his office.

Ebonfeather, the sense motive check tells you nothing, however from the perception check, you notice two big guys stealthing along the edge of the room.

Imagine a tall rectangle (with the short side on top and bottom.)

A large doorway on the top marks the entrance through which you came. A small doorway on the bottom is the door to the vault. The man is leading you to a small doorway in the bottom right corner. The men sneaking are in the top right heading straight downwards.

And I guess your perception check would tell you that most of the men here are adventurers who seek magical artifacts, and you assume most do so in ways less than good. Who knows what those brute guys are up to, or if it even involves you?

Not very stealthy if I detected them with an 11 ;)

I will continue following the man to his office while keeping an eye on the stealthing guys. Trying not to let them know that I saw them: Bluff: 1d20 ⇒ 7

While keeping them in my peripheral vision, I will whisper to the group (and nudge Umberto to be sure he hears me).

"Be ready. We've got some guys sneaking around the edge of the room. I'll keep an eye on them. Just be ready in case they mean us harm."

If they move to pull weapons or get within 10ft of the party, I will turn on them and challenge them to state their intent.

Umberto holds his Lucerne hammer at the ready while he follows Vira. He tries not to let on that he knows what Ebonfeather knows. In his mind, he is already swinging the pole-arm in a defensive pattern.

The men stay at least 50 ft away from you, slowly walking.

The identifier walks up to his office and opens the door.

Ebon I don't know if group involved Vira, so if it did... Vira eyes the men as she follows the identifier into the room.

And if you didn't... Vira whispers to Umberto and Daphne that there are some men sneaking along the far wall.

Yes, Vira was included in the definition of "group".

Ebonfeather and Mushroom will follow the man into the room and look for a way to bar the door behind them.


The man leads you into his office, a simple room modeled after the inside of a small cottage, probably on a remote mountainside somewhere north. The center of the room has a large rug from some animal. There is a fireplace burning in the corner. He has a desk near the door.

He closes his door after you all enter. He looks kind of uncomfortable around Mushroom, eyeing her claws.

There is a large wooden log sitting next to the door, and there are hooks on the door that the log seems to fit (like that town in Lord of the Rings when the Orcs attacked and they stuck the log through the gate so the Orcs couldn't get in. Except this is a much smaller doorway.)

He sticks the log in the doorway, barring it shut and mumbling Identifier-Patient Confidentiality

He sits down at his desk and says What would you like me to identify first?

Satisfied that the door is now barred, Ebonfeather brings out his two rings and three wands for identification.

"Thank you, sir, for performing this task for us. I can't say that I understand how this arrangement works out, but I am glad for your service.

Now, what can you tell me about these items?"


The man sees the two rings and says without hesitation Rings of protection, lowest grade. Not worth much - as far as magic items go.

He pauses as he looks at the wands.

Those two are wands of cure light wounds. One has the full 50 charges (quite valuable) and the other... I wouldn't be so sure. The final one... is a wand of Charm Person, and it appears to have at most 5 charges left.

Anything else?

Very grudgingly the dwarf pulls out the looted rings and the pair of wands he took and puts them in front of him.

Let's see how far we can trust his identifier who expects no fee for his services.

I am assuming that this identification has provided the activation word for the wands.

Ebonfeather takes the wand with fewer charges and touches Mushroom with it, activating it to help her wounds.

If it is, in fact, a wand of CLW... Heal: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8


Yes he provides the identifications with these.

The Identifier looks at the rings and wands that Daphne is holding. Rings of climbing and swimming. He declares. Detect Magic and Bleed.

Then he turns to Umberto. The rings are rings of sustenance and jumping. And those rods... a rod of Balance and a rod of Ice.

Seeing Drahz, he looks appalled. Well you all have a lot of magic items! That is a ring of feather falling, and that is a ring of protection. He then looks at the rings. That would be a wand of Magic Weapon, and that would be a wand of Mending.

He does not know how many charges the wands have, although it can't be more than 20.

Well, that was great. But we best be off to save the city from the orcs. Says Vira.

Umberto, I'll trade one of my Rings of Protection for whichever ring you don't want. Oh, and why would anyone actually make a Wand of Bleed?

Ebonfeather will slip on whichever of the rings he ends up with, then stand by the door waiting to open it once Umberto is ready to walk through.

Umberto walks over to Ebonfeather and after a brief discussion, trades his Ring of Jumping for one of the birdman's Rings of Protection. Umberto puts both of the rings he ends up with on his fingers. He puts the rods in his backpack for safekeeping, the he holds his pole-arm at the ready. "I'm ready to go."
