Silver Crusade

Round Recap:
Mah'ysa and Bahir each cast some initial spells, Mah giving Blessing of Fervor to the party and Bahir enhancing his weapon while moving into the chamber. Pae , meanwhile, takes advantage of Mah'ysa blessing and speedily clambers up the wall inside the chamber to about 40' high.
Meanwhile, the pyrohydra moves around the backside of the large column, possibly to get into better position to attack.
Hazreem then steps into the room and casts Quench. The lizardfolk all howl in pain as the fire that burns within them is assaulted by magic. While all seemingly severely injured, they press their attack, albeit with a little less ferocity. 33 pts of damage taken by each
Efreat attempts to dispel whatever magical affect the lizardfolk have ensorceled they pyrohydra with. As he weaves his spell around the hydra, Efreat gets the distinct feeling that the spell effect is unphased by his Dispel Magic casting. You get the impression that dispel magic cannot interact with whatever spell effect is upon the pyrohydra.

Silver Crusade

Red Group Lizardfolk:
As the first of the charging lizardfolk moves in, Hazreem is able to deliver a swift blow, instantly dropping the red-tinged lizardfolk. The following lizardfolk is able to reach Hazreem and attacks with its heavy mace, wildly missing the druid. (AC 15). Two remaining lizardfolk stop short of attacking Hazreem and each let out a cone (30 ft.) of searing flame from their mouth, engulfing their brethren lizardfolk as well as Hazreem, Efreat, and Bahir. (9 fire, 6 fire) (Efreat and Bahir take no damage due to FR; Hazreem takes 10 total damage after passing the first save and failing the second)
Not going unnoticed by the front line group, the fiery blast seemed to provide healing to the lizardfolk caught within.

Gold Group Lizardfolk:
The lizardfolk to the left of the column nearest the party climbs up onto the ledge and breathes another massive cone of fire down onto the party engulfing Bahir, Efreat, Hazreem, and the 3 (red) lizardfolk nearest the group. (12 fire) (Efreat is immune due to FR; Bahir takes no damage due save and FR; Hazreem takes 12 total damage after failing the save)
The lizardfolk near the bottom of the staircase moves up and also breathes out a cone of fire engulfing Hazreem and the 4 (red) lizardfolk in front of it. (10 fire) (Hazreem takes 5 total damage after passing the save)
The lizardfolk on the top of the staircase also moves down and breathes forth a cone of fire, only managing to catch his 3 companions towards the back of the fray, healing them slightly.
The lizardfolk to the right of the column moves up against the column and fires a flaming arrow at Hazreem. The arrow just misses Hazreem high and hits harmlessly against the wall behind him.

Purple Group Lizardfolk:
The lizardfolk to the back of the chamber first breathes fire on his friends, both healing and boosting their morale, and then runs out through the open doorway.
The two lizardfolk to the bottom right of the stairway, emboldened by the blast of fire washing over them move up towards the fray and fire flaming arrows from their bows, one at Efreat and one at Bahir. Both fired arrows miss wildly (ACs 15 and 19 on Efreat and Bahir respectively )
The remaining two lizardfolk (topmost and bottommost) also advance and each shoot an arrow at Hazreem. The first arrow solidly hits Hazreem, drawing another grunt from the battered druid and the second arrow hits harmlessly to Hazreem’s right against the wall. (ACs 23 and 12; 4 piercing and 2 fire = 6 dmg)

Mah'ysa definitely detects the presence of a magical aura about the pyrohydra. It will take a couple more rounds of study before you can get any significant detail on the spell effect

Bahir's first strike on the lizardfolk in front of Hazreem drops it down to the ground. Any follow up strikes ensure that it is very dead.

The pyrohydra squeezes through the tighter opening between the wall and the column and then easily moves down to your level. Your fiery fears come to light now as all 8 heads rear back and breathe a flaming cone of fire (15'). Half of the cones include Mah'ysa, Efreat, and Hazreem in their blast, and the other half include Efreat, Bahir, Hazreem, and the two lizardfolk (one of whom is too dead to benefit from fire healing) in its blast.

(None of the blasts are strong enough to penetrate through Efreat's fire resistance, and so we will forgo his saves. Mah'ysa will receive a +2 bonus to her Reflex for some cover benefit)

Hazreem retreats hastily out of the room to apply some much needed fire protection magic before re-engaging the battle. Meanwhile, Efreat casts a quickened mirror image spell followed up by an attempt to cast Cone of Cold defensively, desparately trying to avoid the eight burning maws of the pyrohydra. Five images of Efreat spring to life, dancing about him. However the added images aren't enough to bolster his concentration, and Efreat, still heavily distracted by the pyrohydra, watches in shock as his Cone of Cold spell fizzles before causing any harm to his enemies.

Mah'ysa's move will take place after the lizardfolk go.

Red Group Lizardfolk:
The lizardfolk that foolishly charged Hazreem, which initially fell unconscious before even attacking from the air elemental’s blow, now surprisingly stands up and breathes fire upon Mah’ysa and Hazreem. This confirms any suspicions about whether or not they are being healed by standing in the fire breath that their kin continue to spew forth. Mah’ysa is able to side-step most of the blast and is only partially affected. (Hazreem cannot be harmed due to FR; Mah Ref 26 - takes 4 dmg)
Another of the lizardfolk is able to quickly recharge its firebreath and bellows forth another cone of fire, engulfing Bahir, Efreat, Mah’ysa, and one of its lizardfolk brethren. Mah’ysa again partially dodges the blast, though she still takes some minor damage, and Bahir combination of dodging plus fire resistance protect him as well. (Hazreem,Efreat cannot be harmed due to FR; Bahir’s 33 Ref + FR prevents damage as well; Mah Ref 29 - takes 3 dmg)
Another of the lizardfolk moves forward to attack Mah’ysa with his superheated heavy mace, however it swings a tad too early and Mah’ysa easily dodges its attack (AC 18).

Gold Group Lizardfolk:
The lizardfolk to the left of the column, being nearly trampled by the pyrohydra, curses his luck and double moves back around to the top of the grand staircase.
One of the lizardfolk that had breathed fire last round moves to the south part of the chamber and spews forth another massive cone of fire, catching Mah’ysa, Bahir, Efreat, and 3 of its companions in the blast. Both Bahir and Mah’ysa easily dodge the blast, though Mah’ysa takes a minor singe from it. (Hazreem,Efreat cannot be harmed due to FR; Bahir’s save + FR prevents damage as well; Mah Ref 22 - takes 1 dmg)
The one to the bottom of the staircase, whom had previously breathed a cone of fire on its allies to heal them, fires off an arrow at Mah’ysa but misses high above her head. (AC 4)
The lizardfolk to the right of the column on the upper platform tries to hop down and engage the party. However, in his haste he didn’t quite consider the height of the drop, and although he seems only minorly shaken by the fall, he does end up falling over to his side. Shaking it off like he meant to do what just happened, he stands back up and grips is heavy mace.

Purple Group Lizardfolk:
Still holding tight to their bows, one of the lizardfolk move up towards the fray and unleash its fire blast, hitting Mah’ysa, Bahir, and 3 of its companions nearest the group. As before, only Mah’ysa is slightly affected by the blast. (Hazreem,Efreat cannot be harmed due to FR; Bahir’s save + FR prevents damage as well; Mah Ref 19 - takes 2 dmg)
His companion follows suit, however his breath is only able to catch Bahir and its companions within it. (Bahir’s save + FR prevents damage)
One of the lizardfolk takes a few steps towards the group and fires an arrow at Bahir missing him completely and nearly hitting the pyrohydra in the process.
The lizardfolk nearest the southern wall of the chamber notices Pae climbing about and moves up to breathe fire upon him. Even while climbing, Pae nimbly avoids the fire blast.

Silver Crusade

Bahir slashes out at the pyrohydra, striking it with his scimitar. The pyrohydra writhes back a little from the wound and a few extra heads seem to lock in on Bahir. While Tempest strikes true, Bahir notices that the blow wasn’t effective as it could have been as it would seem that some of the damage didn’t affect the creature. (your holy damage and fire outsider bane damage didn’t seem to affect the pyrohydra; 9 damage total taken). The nearby lizardfolk, however, isn’t as fortunate as the pyrohydra. While Bahir’s first attack misses, his follow up attack cuts deeply into the beast’s neck, nearly severing its head, and it drops down to the ground (45 damage taken).

Pae , slightly annoyed at the sudden attention he received from the lizardfolk descends down the wall a bit and slashes at the creature with his whip. The whip easily wraps around the creature’s left leg. Pae pulls tight in an attempt to trip the creature, and in response the lizardfolk hastily lets off a shot with its bow and misses wildly (AoO AC 10, miss). Dropping its bow, the lizardman falls to the ground.

The Pyrohydra, at least partially annoyed at Bahir, unleashes a flurry of disorganized attacks from each of its heads. Just prior to striking out, Bahir notices that the wound he just previously inflicted upon the creature partially closes up.

Pyrohydra Attacks
(Efreat cannot be hurt by the fire breath attacks due to FR and so I’ll skip saves for him)

Head one attempts to bite Efreat, but its jaws clench down upon only air as Efreat is able to dodge its attack.
Head two tries to chomp down upon Bahir and misses him completely.
Head three breathes a cone of fire upon Efreat, Bahir, and the now dead lizardfolk. Efreat’s fire resistance completely shields him while Bahir quickly moves aside, escaping most of the blast and lets his fire resistance absorb the rest. (0 damage to anyone; lizardfolk is too dead to be healed)
Head four tries to bite down on Efreat’s midsection and only just barely misses.
Head five bites at Bahir’s arm, which Bahir is easily able to move away in time to avoid the attack.
Head six rears back and breathes forth a cone of flame on Efreat and Bahir. Bahir again mostly ducks the blast and his fire resistance is able to absorb what flames do reach him.
Head seven breathes another cone of fire on Efreat and Bahir, and like before Bahir’s dodging and fire resistance prevents any damage.
Head eight also expels a fiery breath upon Efreat and Bahir. Bahir again confidently jukes to the side and avoids all damage from the flames.

Round 3 - Conclusion

Red Group Lizardfolk:
One of the lizardfolk (r1) moves up and swings at Efreat with its heavy mace but misses completely. The other nearby lizardfolk (r4) steps into the doorway and blasts Hazreem and Mah’ysa with its fiery breath, which only just catches Mah’ysa for a small bit of damage. (Hazreem immune due to FR; Mah’ysa passed save, takes 2 dmg)

Gold Group Lizardfolk:
The lizardfolk near the south end of the chamber charges at Bahir, swing its heavy mace with animalistic brutality. His swing just misses Bahir, however, and the lizard-man nearly falls over from his effort. (AC 26 misses, -2 AC from charge)

Purple Group Lizardfolk:
Two of the bow wielding lizardfolk (p1,p2) drop their bows and charge towards Bahir, drawing their heavy maces and swing wildly. Bahir is able to catch their blows with his shield, easily deflecting them away. (ACs 25, 25; miss)
The one furthest back, still clutching his iron bow, moves up and breathes a cone of fire into the fray, catching Bahir and the four nearest lizardfolk that are still alive. Bahir avoids the brunt of the fire blast and his fire resistance protects him from any damage (Pass save, 0 dmg due to FR). The lizardfolk within the fire blast are healed a bit and further emboldened in their fight.
The lizardfolk (p4) engaged with Pae attempts to stand up and shoot an arrow at Pae. Pae responds in kind with a vicious attack that strikes the lizardfolk in the throat, though the lizardfolk is able to get off a shot with his bow that manages to graze Pae’s shoulder. (Pae’s AoO hits for 5 damage, crit is not confirmed; Lizardman arrow hits Pae, AC21 for 9 pierce and 0 fire)

Detect Magic doesn't really afford you a chance to determine the exact spell effects on a living creature (only items) - I think there is a spell for that instead ... However, I'd say that you have enough clues know to make a solid guess on what is going on with a good Knowledge(Religion) or Knowledge(Arcana) check.

Given the compulsion effect, the knowledge that there is a cleric of Flauros leading the lizardmen, and Efreat's inability to negate the spell with Dispel Magic, your best guess is that the beast is under a Quest spell. It could be a different spell, as there are others that Dispel Magic cannot bypass, but it would certainly make sense given the circumstances. Many divine casters do seem to favor the Quest spell.

If it is a Quest spell, you will need to try Remove Curse, Limited Wish, Wish, or Miracle to remove it. You seem to recall that Remove Curse's success is going to be dependent on how powerful the opposing caster is.

Also, I don't believe one is denied their Dex bonus when prone. How is Pae getting sneak damage? I'm sure I am just missing something. The lizardman will go down even without the sneak attack, I am just curious.

Bahir, read up two posts first. :)

I errored with the checks with Mah’ysa. I forgot that Knowledge Arcana can be used to determine active spell effects on creatures, though not necessarily the actual spell still. It all played out the same though. :)

Bahir nods his head, knowing the lizardfolk made a critical mistake, and lays into the surrounding followers of Flauros with Tempest, who revels in the destruction of the demon worshipping creatures. He immediately nearly cuts the first in half, dropping it to the brass floor (20 dmg, dead). Moving to the next lizardfolk, Tempest easily slices through its neck, decapitating it (36 dmg, dead). He then runs the next lizardfolk through as easily as the previous (32 dmg, dead).

---Bahir, your last two attack will take place here. They won't affect the Pyrohydra's action though so we'll continue.---

Pae lashes out with his scorpion whip as a master artist with a blank canvas, landing three brutal strikes, one of them critically injuring it. (11 dmg, dying, befuddled for 4 rounds if it somehow doesn’t die; if Pae get the sneak damage it is really dead)

The Pyrohydra, wounds partially close up again (8 dmg healed), as it unleashes another volley of bites and fire breath upon the group.

Mah’ysa, drawing upon power of the Dawnflower, calls forth 3 blinding rays that each strike a separate head on the pyrohydra. Two of the heads look unaffected, as they focus in on Mah’ysa as the source of the searing light. However, one of the heads (#5) begins thrashing about, as if it suddenly couldn’t see any longer.

Bahir unleashes 4 strikes at the pyrohydra body, all of which strike true including a deep wound that gushes with blood. The creature roars out in pain and anger from its wounds. (4 strikes, including a crit, for a total of 47 dmg=6+11+12+8+10 ; Bahir doesn’t get the sense that the creature is reacting to the holy damage and is not likely a fire outsider as well.)

(It is technically prone, I am going to rule that doesn’t give it any penalties or bonuses in this situation, being a huge creature with reach head attacks - not that it will matter much.)

Pyrohydra Attacks
(Hazreem & Efreat cannot be hurt by the fire breath attacks due to FR and so I’ll skip saves for him)

  • Head one breathes out a cone of flame upon Efreat and Bahir. Between the fire protection and Bahir’s dodging of the blast (Ref 23) the attack is ineffective.
  • Head two attempts to bite Efreat (AC 10) but misses him completely amid the confusion of the swirling images
  • Head three stretches around Efreat and showers Hazreem and Mah’ysa with its fire breath. Hazreem’s fire protection completely shields him; Mah’ysa largely avoids the blast but is still scalded a tad. (Ref 25, 4 dmg).
  • Head four attempts to bite down on Bahir and misses him completely (AC Nat 1)
  • Head five, completely blinded, breathes a cone of flame that completely misses everyone in the party.
  • Head six, also turns its teeth towards Bahir and tries to bite the paladin but Bahir easily pushes its head away with his shield. (AC12)
  • Head seven, bites again at Bahir, who is able to parry its attack with ease (AC14)
  • Head eight, lashes out at Efreat, landing what could have been a significant blow upon one of Efreat’s images (Nat 20; hits image, 2 images remain)
