Drael descends the ladder, but still holds Razif's bow (unless he dropped it).
Razif may act!
Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid
Uzma calls upon Gozreh's protection for the last time as he stands up and swings his staff in the name of Saint-Vardishal.
Heat Shimmer + stand + attack
attack: 1d20 ⇒ 21d20 ⇒ 1
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
"Forgive me Nefeshti," he whispers when fate guides his blow astray.
GM Dinketry

As Uzma stands, King Mokknokk growls and swings his warhammer at the healed druid’s kneecaps!
AoO on Uzma, Heat Shimmer: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 161d100 ⇒ 541d6 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1 HIT! - 1 hp dmg, Uzma
The pugwampi clips Uzma’s leg with the edge of his warhammer.
Razif may act!
Razif al-Akkuya
Apologies, I'm in the middle of moving house!
With eyes completely glazed over and clearly at the edge of consciousness, Razif attempts one final hurrah with his scimitar.
Hit 1: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 3 + 1 = 21
Hit 2: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 1 = 20
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
The suspense is killing me!
GM Dinketry

I seem to have this inability to remember that part of Heat Shimmer. Thanks for that.
Mokknokk Fortitude Save (DC 14): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 SUCCESS!
The pugwampi averts his eyes as his warhammer plinks against the druid's knee.
Razif thrusts with all he has just as the druid further distracts the pugwampi by stepping into a flanking position. His scimitar glides through the heavy armour plating deep into King Mokknokk's flesh. Unfortunately, the effort is too much for the ranger, and he loses consciousness and collapses after scoring the pyrrhic blow.
I have Razif now at -1 hp and dying. I have Korum at -1 hp but stable.
King Mokknokk, with vengeance in his eyes, turns on Razif's prone form.
Round 14!
The meaning of Mokknokk's feral bark needs no translation as he raises his warhammer and brings it down hard onto Razif's prone form.
Melee Attack on Razif: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 211d6 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4 HIT! - 4 hp dmg, Razif
I have Razif at -5 hp now and dying. Drael, Layaali, and Uzma may act!
Drael Kapernos
Drael cries out as the king's hammer falls upon his friend's unconscious form. He drops the bow, moving quickly to stand over Razif with his warhammer in hand and striking out at the massive pugwampi.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Drael, you can move to stand over Korum's prone form, but Razif is further away. Each body-occupying square you move through is difficult terrain as well, so I've moved you as far as you can go this round - 1 square. You're already provoking one AoO from Mokknokk by moving over Korum. If you'd like to move the last square, you might provoke another AoO - provided that Mokknokk has the ability to take that AoO...it's your choice.
The pugwampi growls ferociously as the bloodrager moves into his line-of-sight, swinging wildly with his warhammer up and at his chest!
AoO on Drael: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 71d6 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0 MISS!
The swing misses wildly.
Layaali and Uzma may act! Drael, you can tell me what you'd like to do - I'll take silence as happiness with where you are right now.
Layaali Twice-Born
Without regard for her own safety, Layaali moves over Korum, past Drael, and into the open space beside Razif. Provoking repeatedly.
Then she reaches down and places her hands upon Razif's chest. Casting cure light wounds, but not provoking for the casting.
"Rise! RISE! Your time has not yet come!"
Healing: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid
Uzma listens to the voice in his head, and moves to flank the foul pugwampi, hoping to draw its ire in Layaali's stead.
attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 111d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
He swings his quarterstaff but fails again to strike a worthy blow...
GM Dinketry

Layaali moves past the snarling pugwampi, but provokes no further attacks from his swift but small warhammer. She lays her hands on Razif's wounds, but her healing touch does not awaken the ranger.
Is that your last 1st level spell of the day, Layaali?
Uzma swings Tempest at King Mokknokk but fails to connect.
Round 15!
King Mokknokk chortles at the staff whistling by his ear and chooses to press his attack on the most dangerous-appearing foe.
Melee Attack on Drael: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 171d6 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5 MISS!
Mokknokk lands a heavy blow on the edge of Drael's shield, deflected at the last moment.
Mokknokk barks words to no one.
Drael, Uzma, and Layaali may act!
Drael Kapernos
As Drael knocks the warhammer aside with his shield, his eyes begin to glow and his own hammer crackles with golden energy. He strikes again at the pugwampi king, hoping to keep his attention from Layaali and his unconscious friends.
Entering bloodrage and activating my racial ability to add 1d6 shock damage for one round.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + (2) + 5 = 9
Layaali Twice-Born
That was it. She had no more healing spells. She had used her healing scrolls the other day. No potions left, either. She could still channel the vitality of the Cardinal Martyr, but positioning would be paramount.
With a deep breath, Layaali dashes off out of combat and circles around the chapel.
Withdraw action.
Layaali is positioning herself to heal Uzma and Razif, but not Mokknokk, with channel energy next turn. It's a 30 ft. radius. I drew a template on the map of the area that Layaali's channel can effect (which is also exactly as far as her vision extends to, so she would know if she's positioned properly). Correct me if I'm wrong, but her positioning should be perfect to do so. If it's not she would have moved slightly differently to have the desired effect.
GM Dinketry

Layaali, you're all good. Drael, you haven't added the +2 for flanking to your attack. I also don't think anyone was adding their +1 from bless as well. Despite those additions, Drael still doesn't connect with Mokknokk. Uzma, however...
Drael swings his crackling warhammer at Mokknokk, but bounces off of his breastplate. As the pugwampi chortles, Uzma manages to smack him in the back of the head with Tempest.
Round 16! - Bless has ended.
King Mokknokk growls and moves away from the irritating druid and extends his hand towards the bloodrager's shield.
Drael, you get an AoO on King Mokknokk! (No more flanking bonus)
Drael Kapernos
Damn even with +3 on that an 18 misses, this is gonna be rough.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Rolls like that won't help...
GM Dinketry

Drael's wooden shield splinters and breaks in half as he swings reflexively down at the pugwampi, connecting with the floor.
Your shield is now broken, Drael.
Drael, Uzma, and Layaali may act!
Drael Kapernos
Drael cries out as he feels his shield splinter while still on his arm, but he continues to use it for protection as best he can while he strikes again.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Layaali Twice-Born
Layaali holds her holy symbol aloft and prays aloud, "Cardinal Martyr, hear my prayer! Take these warriors wounds upon yourself that they may continue to fight the evils of this world! Praise Vildeis!"
Channel energy, hits Layaali, Uzma and Razif.
Healing: 1d6 ⇒ 6
GM Dinketry
|
Drael’s swing misses King Mokknokk again, the pugwampi squealing with laughter at the bloodrager’s response to his shield breaking. Layaali channels; Razif opens his eyes.
Razif, you are prone and need to pick up your scimitar if you would like your weapon. I have you at 1 hp.
Uzma may act!
GM Dinketry
|
King Mokknokk growls at the pesky druid and swings his warhammer reflexively at his knees!
AoO on Uzma: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 141d6 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2 HIT! - 2 hp dmg, Uzma
The pugwampi manages to land a painful blow on Uzma's right knee that thankfully glances off. As he does so, however, the druid plants Tempest behind Mokknokk's right leg and shoves the pugwampi off balance, toppling the king onto his back!
King Mokknokk is prone. Razif may act!
Razif al-Akkuya
Razif scrambles to grab his scimitar and make a hasty attack against the extremely frustrating pugwampi.
Hit 1: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 3 - 4 = 11
Hit 2: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 3 - 4 = 9
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
worth a shot

Razif swings his weapon from the floor at the prone pugwampi, finding his blade turned away by the creature's armour.
Round 17!
King Mokknokk stands up, growling in Gnoll.
His bravado in standing up in a crowd of prepped warriors is truly maddening.
Drael, Razif, and Uzma, you get AoOs! Uzma and Drael, remember to add +2 for flanking. Razif, you must take your -4 penalty to your AoO.
Razif al-Akkuya
Hit 1: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 3 - 4 = 15
Hit 2: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 3 - 4 = 10
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Razif grits his teeth, suppressing his desire to throw some choice words in Gnoll back.
Drael Kapernos
Drael aims carefully as the king rises, sending a thumping blow directly into his chest.
Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
GM Dinketry

In a flurry of activity, the ranger swings from the floor at Mokknokk while the druid thrusts his staff between the pugwampi's legs. The two attacks only wind up deflecting each other.
The bloodrager almost closes his eyes, visualising his swing intensely as King Mokknokk's leering face comes up from the ground. With a sickening crunch, Drael connects with the centre of the large pugwampi's breastplate, caving it inward, but not halting Mokknokk from rising to a standing position.
Mokknokk stands in front of Drael, blood bubbling up from its mouth, warhammer limp at its side, falling from its grip as Mokknokk begins to chortle and wheeze. With a sudden snarl, Mokknokk spits the bloody froth from its mouth at the bloodrager, spraying him as its eyes roll up in its head and the king falls face-first in front of all of you.
COMBAT ENDED!
Razif al-Akkuya
Razief relaxes every muscle in his body and just lies on the ground a while, taking deep breaths.
"I think... I think we can take a break now. Gods, that was rough. Nice job, Drael."
Layaali Twice-Born
Layaali calmly walks over to the unconscious pugwampi, takes off his helmet (if he has one) and stabs him in the throat with her dagger, ensuring this world is forever free of his evils.
Once she's certain all the nearby pugwampi are dead, Layaali draws everyone close and channels the power of her god, healing her companions wounds.
Healing: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Healing: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Healing: 1d6 ⇒ 5
I think Raif had the most wounds at 11, right? Is anyone still wounded?
GM Dinketry

It should go without saying that you don't have to roll two d20s for your rolls anymore, but it's nice to say that, right?
Layaali unstraps the bird's skull tied to King Mokknokk's head before slitting its throat. Similarly, the remainder of the able-bodied gang ensure that the other pugwampi won't be returning to life. After a few minutes of vindictive stabs, the gang feels truly free of the tang of fey unluck for the first time in a long time. Everyone enjoys being fully healed and conscious, and the group takes a breather.
Peering up, it's evident that the collapse of the choir lofts was more extensive than originally thought (I've amended the 'Upper Works' map), such that exploration via the ladder is now impossible. And yet the papier-mâché walls of the pugwampi den rest undisturbed and unexplored in the southeast corner of the chapel lofts...
Razif al-Akkuya
"I would like to extend my thanks to you all. This hallowed place has been cleared, and though I wouldn't call it completely redeemed, probably, great progress has been made. Though I wonder if there's any personal rewards we could pocket from the den before we send your caravans over..."
Razif looks around to see if there are any other ways of climbing up into the upper works now that the ladder is out of commission.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Layaali Twice-Born
"We have done good work this day," Layaali remarks with a serene smile, hands bloody from killing the pugwampi. "But we are not done, yet." She wipes her dagger off and sheathes it, then dries her hands on the corner of her veil.
Turning her gaze to the nest she looks around..
So... Does anyone have a grappling hook and rope? How high is it to the rafters, again?
GM Dinketry
|
Razif realises that the chapel itself still is largely desecrated, though it wouldn’t take more than a full day of work to right that, and of course, clearing the pugwampi residence from the upper rafters.
Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Uzma kneels in the middle of the temple and prays aloud: "Sarenrae, your holiest temple has been purified! Gozreh sent his most faithful Mahdi through the desert to awaken the North Wind as has been prophesied. Call upon your priests and your faithful to sanctify this holiest of shrines that once was severed. Send them signs and tell of the return of Saint-Vardishal, Templar of the North Wind, chosen of Nefeshti. Invite them to this hall, command them to purify the home of this, your most loyal effendi.”
Then, with zeal and holy fervour, he turns to his companions: ”Together, we will extinguish the flame of Rovarug!”
Drael Kapernos
We should probably loot the king and the other pugwampis at some point, but that can be dealt with after the thematic stuff.
When finally ready to move, Drael climbs back up to the rafters and re-claims his bow. Yet another string to be mended tonight, I suppose. Well done all, we seem to have defeated all of the pests this place has to offer.
Layaali Twice-Born
Layaali smiles gently at Uzma's fervour.
"We will, Uzma." she nods. "But we need not wait for her followers to appear. We can begin the work ourselves."
After looking at the nasty pugwampi nest, she frowns. "Unfortunately, I cannot get rid of that."
"Still... I believe the dead need to be properly laid to rest, first. They've suffered indignity long enough."
After another look at the nest, Layaali looks to the others. "I'm going down into the crypt."
Layaali's going to go down to the crypts and begin to return the desecrated dead back to their resting places.
GM Dinketry
|
With a dedicated day of work, the gang can clean up the majority of the full-body desecrated dead in the crypts, as well as removing the bodies of what appear to be the interlopers. There still remain many unidentified single bones and fragments that cannot be easily slotted into tombs and crypts, but they can be neatly gathered for later categorisation and interment.
You retire back to the dormitory, exhausted but satisfied at your day's work. Sleep never felt as righteous.
And in the morning, Uzma, Drael, and Layaali all level up! Additionally, Layaali gains back one more CON and STR point each! Let's take a moment and discuss in the so-called thread of discussion.
Layaali Twice-Born
Come morning, Layaali sits in silent meditation, contemplating upon all the ways she sacrificed for others, and combatted evil yesterday. Then upon how she would strive to do so again today.
"Honoured Vildeis, I pray that you lend me the strength to follow in your example. The Cardinal Martyr resides within us all."
Eventually she stands and nibbles on some food.
Was our mission to rid this place of dangers and then fetch the others? Or make this place habitable and then send the others? Just curious if we should be heading back to camp, or tidying this place up further?
Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid
"There remains the question of the vulture eggs," Uzma reminds his companions. "The bird will eventually return, and it is a foul-tempered animal..."
Does Uzma have an idea of how long it could be before the vulture returns? Also: how long before the eggs hatch?
Knowledge, Nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Layaali Twice-Born
Layaali nods. "Yes, we must deal with that. What do you know about the vulture?"
GM Dinketry
|
Layaali thinks back to the instructions that she received from Princess Almah and her major-domo, Garavel, prior to attending to the gang in exploring the monastery. She recalls that she was ordered to "rid the place of fell creatures so that we might claim it as a home base in our fight against the gnoll tribes inhabiting Kelmarane".
The desecrated temple to Sarenrae beckons. A full day of work would set it right, Layaali surmises.
Layaali Twice-Born
"I'd like to tend to the temple today. We cannot leave it to fester any longer."
She's ready to put in some elbow grease! That place will be FILTHY. Eww.
GM Dinketry
|
Layaali moves to start cleaning up the temple. Soon after exploring the altar and recess around it, she discovers some torn-out pages of Sarenrae's holy text, The Birth of Light and Truth strewn about the altar, smeared with excrement.
The chapel lofts rest untouched, the grotesque jumble of skulls still hanging over the scene like some profane chandelier.
What are the rest of you doing?
Drael Kapernos
Drael climbs the ladder back to the loft and attempts to sever the rope tying the skulls to the ceiling, after making sure that no one is beneath them of course.
