The gang await the coming of the cooler portion of the day (and Uzma waking) prior to making the mile trek south to the Sultan's Claw and reuniting with Princess Roveshki's wagon train. Once the sun begins its slow descent across the horizon, the gang heads out of the monastery swiftly while keeping their eyes on the clouds above as well as behind them for any signs of curious interlopers. Sarenrae (or Saint Vardishal) is with them, and their return trip to the gathered wagons is without incident.

You have approximately 6 hours to do with as you please within the monastery prior to leaving. Let me know if you'd like to do anything with that time (i.e. repairs on broken weapons, skill checks, healing, etc).

A call had gone out, and the gnome siblings had answered.

"Rab-Rab and Min," the tall human grunts deferentially, staring out and down from his white caftan robes and hood at the two upturned faces. "We asked for further assistance from the Pactmasters for Hadrod and Hadrah with the animals and an able mind to assist Father Zastoran with his concoctions, my Princess."

"I am well aware what I asked for, Garavel." The female human was beautiful, but the tone of her voice twisted her face in an ugly way. "It seems that the Pactmasters wish to test me by submitting only to the most literal interpretation of my request. Two mouths to feed when we truly only wanted one - I blame myself, but be that as it were, do not consider my attitude towards you charitable, my dear major-domo."

The merchant-princess waves a reed fan in front of her face to move the stifling air and sighs deeply. "I am sure they will be of service." She re-addresses the brother and sister. "Welcome to my caravan, siblings Bunnis. Major-domo Garavel will be sure to find a place for you where you won't be stepped on." She finishes her speech with a steely glare at the bowing major-domo. "You may go."

As the gnomes exit the princess' large tent on the heels of Garavel, a call goes up from one of the caravan guards stationed to the north. Garavel stops and squints in the direction of the guard. "They've returned, thank Sarenrae." He looks down at the gnomes once more, looks around helplessly, and points at the animal pen.

"Just go over there for now, if you please." He then moves quickly towards the north end of the camp, a few robed figures approaching in the evening sun.

Welcome aboard!

Layaali spends her time cleaning up the horrifically messy kitchen of the monastery until the group is ready to leave. Once the time has come, Layaali heads out into the desert alongside them, letting those better at navigating lead the way.

When the caravan is finally in sight, Layaali smiles. "Thank you, Vildeis, for keeping them safe." she prays.

FYI, my kids just got to school for the day, so it'll be quite a few hours before they can make their post (Uh... three for my daughter and... six or seven for my son). They're going to be SO excited when they find out they get to join in. Haha.

As seems to often be the case, Uzma seems reluctant to leave the tranquility and isolation of the desert. "She has guided us home into the arms of Sarenrae, and back. Rab-rab and Min were in the big city when they found a sign, saying a caravan needed help. Rab-rab always loved the desert. She did not want to be in the city anymore. It was stinky! There were lots of people! And most of them were not very nice.

"Come on, Min!" Rab-rab said. She took his hand, and dragged him over to the sign. "It says they need people to save some town in the desert! Let's go, let's go! We'll be great at this job!"

Rab-rab looked down at her pet jackrabbit. "And you'll be great too, won't you Jack-jack?"

A pet jackrabbit darts around her legs in excitement.

Rab-rab smiles and gives Jack-jack a big hug. "To Kelmarane!"

----

When Rab-rab and Min got to the Caravan, they were very happy.

"Here it is! Here it is!" Rab-rab exclaimed. She was very excited. "Come on, Min, let's go inside!"

She saw a guard. So she went up to say hi. "Hi, there! What are you doing? I'm Rab-rab Bunnis! We signed up to help! Where's this Princess I'm supposed to meet?"

"Oh!" Rab-rab said as she picked up Jack-jack. "This is Jack-jack, my jackrabbit! He is very happy to meet you! And this is Min, my brother. He's kind of happy to be here. He just doesn't look it! Trust me!"

Rab-rab looks around carefully. "Nice place you've got here! Hey, you look hot! Here!" Rab-rab moves her hands and suddenly a nice, cooling breeze, blows on the guards face, cooling him off from the hot sun.

"You're welcome! Bye! I'm going to the Princess! See you later!"

Rab-rab skipped through the Caravan with Jack-jack hopping beside her. When they saw Garavel she waved. "Hello, big tall guy! Do you know where this Princess is? I'm looking for her. I'm supposed to meet her soon. This is Jack-jack." She holds the jackrabbit up to his face (but can only reach his tummy). "He's very helpful. My name's Rab-rab Bunnis! What's yours?"

---

When she is in Princess Roveshki's tent, Rab-rab looks around. It looks very fancy. And this Princess sure was rude! She didn't seem very happy that Rab-rab and Min had come to help. Humans! They were always so grumpy! Haha!

"Okay, bye!" Rab-rab says when she is told to leave. Once she is outside she smiles and looks around. "Wow!"

When Garavel tells her to go to the animal pen, Rab-rab pulls out her big, fancy, kite. It looks like a giant, jackrabbit! With a wave of her hand, a nice breeze blasts the kite up into the air. Rab-rab giggles and flies her kite beautifully through the sky, directing it with her magical wind.

"Come on, Min! Come on, Jack-jack! Let's go see what other animals we can make friends with!"

Flying her kite, with Jack-jack hopping beside her, Rab-rab wanders over to the animal pen. She looks around to see what kind of animals are here, and who takes care of them.

"Hello animals! Hello animal keepers! I am Rab-rab Bunnis! This Jack-jack. And this is my brother, Min! What are your names? I want to make friends with ALL of you! Come on, animals! What are you up to?"

Then she hops into the animal pen to make friends with them and play. She is careful to hold her kite in one hand so it doesn't blow away.

Razif will spend his hours before leaving wandering the monastery, aimlessly, trying to imagine what life would have been like, and what kind of battle could have happened in here. He spends a lot of time in the library and the basement floor, trying to see if he can gleam something new out of the whole situation.

---

When time comes to return to the caravan, Razif is in high spirits. The toughness of the desert has come to be something of an old friend of Razif. He becomes a bit more wary and reserved once they approach the caravan, partly because he's about to meet a merchant princess whose name has fallen in his father's business more than once. He takes a deep breath and mumbles to himself, "Let's not shame the family name, Razif."

Min was in the city reading a book, when his sister started yelling about some town. His sister was always yelling. His sister did not like to sit still. Min was the opposite. Min liked the quiet! It was best for reading. Min loved sitting still! It was also best for reading.

But, his sister's yelling, and then she grabs his hand and drags him down the street. She takes him to a big office, and they wait in line. His sister and some official talk and then she signs something. Min wasn't paying much attention. He was reading a very good book all about desert animals.

And then they were off. Min followed his sister, and by the time he looked up from his book, they were a far way from the city! They were in the desert on the way to some place called Kelmarane.

Min sighed.

"Why are we going to some place infested with gnolls?" Rab-rab said something about being heroes, so Min sighed again.

Sisters.

"Oh, Rab-rab."

Good thing I brought my books!

----

When they get to the caravan, Min looks up fro his book.

His sister has said her last name was Bunnis, and that was not true!

"I'm Min Bunnisbeldar," Min said to the guard. "And she's Rab-rab Bunnisbeldar.. Our name is NOT Bunnis."

Then he went back to his book as his sister chattered away.

When she got moving he followed her. Everytime she said their last name wrong, he corrected her, and then went back to is book.

Eventually he was in a big tent. The Princess called him by the wrong name, and he sighed. "Ah, excuse me. We're not the siblings Bunnis. We're the siblings Bunnisbeldar. Proper names are important."

Then he nods. He was no longer listening. He just wanted to get back to his book! But, he was pretty sure he shouldn't read when the Princess was talking. Humans found that rude. Or so he'd read.

When they are told to leave, Min pulls his book right back out and follows his sister. He looks up from his book long enough to see her jump into a pen of animals.

Sisters.

He sighs and shakes his head. "Those aren't just animals, Rab-rab. They have names, you know. There! That goat. Proper name: Capra aegagrus hircus. There are over 300 distinct breeds of goat. And that one there! Camel. Proper name: Camelus dromedarius." He opens his mouth to teach Rab-rab more about camels, but she's giggling, and prancing around and not really listening. So he sighs.

Sisters.

He goes back to his book.

"It seems that the princess will do nothing but welcome guests to her caravan today," the major-domo says as a means of greeting (with a hint of a smile), as he watches Layaali and Drael trudge into camp. He frowns briefly as he notes the stranger following behind with Uzma and Korum. "You've picked up a stray...and lost a few, I think, unless I have forgotten how to count."

Garavel continues to frown as a familiar figure wearing an ever-present face wrap struggles forward on a makeshift crutch to greet Korum and Uzma by name. "A Man who traverses the length and the breadth of the desert and still finds water enough to share, that is a Man to be reckoned with!" Nishv says. "Or Woman," the monk corrects himself with a bow of his head to Layaali. "It is a proverb; no besmirchment meant."

Layaali bows her head respectfully to Garavel. Momentarily forgetting her manners, Layaali asks worriedly. "These other guests... I don't suppose they were my companions? Have Mahmood and Alal appeared? And tell me, did Nafari make the return trip safely?"

Reminder about Mahmood, Alal and Nafari:
Mahmood and Alal are fellow battle-priests of Vildeis who were supposed to joint the caravan with me. They helped Layaali liberate 13 slaves from gnolls on the journey here and haven't been seen since. Nafari was Layaali's guide from her home to the caravan, and from the caravan to the monastery. She left after dropping Layaali off to return here. Also, the 13 liberated slaves arrived with Layaali at the caravan. Whether any of them remained, or they all left after Layaali set out for the monastery is unknown to her.

"And the dozen souls I left in your care? Have many remained? Are they well?"

I believe I was being tended to when you and the suli arrived in the encampment - that's why we didn't meet previously."

Or so says the GM.

To Garavel, Layaali nods. "I see. Although I had longed to look over them, it is well that they are on their way to new lives. May Vildeis protect them."

"Oh, my apologies, Garavel." Layaali replies. "This is Razif al-Akkuya--a more brave and noble soul you would be hard pressed to find. Without his aid we would not have been able to cleanse the monastery. All of use owe him our lives. And bit the babies in the cradles,
And ate the cheeses out of the vats,
And licked the soup from the cooks' own ladles,
Split open the kegs of salted sprats,
Made nests inside men's Sunday hats,
And even spoiled the women's chats,
By drowning their speaking
With shrieking and squeaking
In fifty different sharps and flats."

Knowledge, Nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

"Desert rats are fine little animals," the sun-burnt druid answers the girl. "They are undoubtedly blessed by Gozreh as they can survive even under the harshest conditions, but they have no place in Sarenrae's temple..."

He smiles.

"I am Vard –" he stops himself. "No. I am Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid."

The man is either completely crazy or very wise. Hard to say.

Rab-rab Bannis hops up and down, and dances while the funny man sings her a poem. When he is done she claps her hands.

"Hi! I'm Rab-rab Bunnis! And that guy with the book is my brother Min!" She points up in the sky at her kite, and then down to the ground at the jackrabbit bouncing around her feet. "That's my kite, and this is Jack-jack! He's my pet! It's nice to meet you Uzma! We are playing tag with the animals and Jack-jack's it! Do you want to play with us?"

Rab-rab then runs off, teasing Jack-jack. "You'll never catch me! You'll never catch me!"

"Oh! You caught me!" Rab-rab bursts out laughing then races off to tag Uzma. "GOT YOU!"

She runs away into the pen.

Min shuts his book. "Jerboa are neither poisoned nor diseased. They carry no sickness. Your bite is fine."

Min nods his head at Uzma. "Hmmm... Interesting song. Oddly disturbing. I loved it." He nods his head again, but then SIGHS when Rab-rab gets their name wrong again.

"I am Min BUNNISBELDAR. She is Rab-rab BUNNISBELDAR. Our name is not Bunnis. She's being silly."

Looking back at the old people Min says, "I might be a little help with catching the jerboa. My sister, as silly as she is, is also a fair hand with animals. We can help you, next time it comes around." Min nods. "Let me know."

Min sighs. Sisters

"No," he tells her. "Its not Bunnis. You made that up."

He shakes his head and goes back to his book.

The Mountain's Maw |

Nightfall comes over the encampment as Layaali, Drael, Razif, Korum, and Uzma are lead into Princess Almah's tent.

"My loyal team, you have returned," the princess says with a sigh of relief from a seated position on a large silken pillow atop a large brightly-coloured rug that forms the floor of her capacious tent. A small floor desk sits in front of her, a quill and inkpot set aside as you were introduced by Garavel. A warm brazier in the middle of the tent provides light and heat, and a pleasant pungent aroma with the scent of cloves pervades the air. "I see, though, that you are not all the members of the ersatz tribe that I originally dispatched to the ruined Sarenrite monastery a week ago. The monk Nishv made his way back here with a badly-broken leg along with the halfling Loran five days ago, the latter requesting a termination of his contract with us - he did not give further reason as to why. His appearance and request allowed me to solve two riddles with one answer: how to employ two further skilled explorers," here she acquiesces her head toward Drael and Layaali, "for their martial and divine prowess, and how to guide the recent arrival of newly-freed slaves back to Solku alongside your former guide, Nafari."

Her pleasant expression fades. "And yet, I see not the half-orc Rafyyk Halfmoon. Tell me true: what did you find in the old monastery, and what befell Master Halfmoon?"

As it gets dark out, Rab-rab reels in her kite. She puts it away, into her backpack. Then Rab-rab helps the old people get the animals settled in for bed. Then she hops out of the pen. "Can I sleep beside the animal pen?" she asks.

"I love the night-time." Min says as it gets dark out. "The stars are beautiful. They say that some of those are other worlds, you know. Maybe some are even like ours..."

He watches the skies. "Can we lay out our bedrolls someplace less stinky Rab-rab? The animal pen smells like poop."

Hadrod looks bemused and surprised at the gnome's question.

"Why, of course you can sleep beside the pen! That's what we do, nevertheless." Turning to Min, Hadrod winks, "You get used to the smell, young friend."

Layaali bows respectfully to Princess Roveshki.

"We have returned. No longer whole, as you can see." Standing tall and poised again, Layaali continues. "I am pleased that Nafari and Loran escorted the Freemen to safety. I hope you conveyed my thanks to them properly. As for what happened to Rafyyk, I believe he left in the night. Our trials in the monster were many, and few had the stomach to follow our mission through to completion."

Layaali inclines her head to Uzma and Korum. "I suggest that those who were present for then entire ordeal recount the tale. They know more than I."

He moves over, away from the animal pen but not too far from his sister. He rolls out his bedroll, and lays down to watch the stars.

"Our trials in the monster" - I'm assuming that auto-correct forbade you from using the word 'monastery'....

Princess Roveshki nods at Layaali's words, turning her head towards Korum and Uzma.

Korum isn't speaking. Uzma?

You should see some of the horrible things my tablet's autocorrect does. We're honestly lucky that's been the worst of it so far... Lol.

"Raffyk fought bravely and then disappeared into the night. Gozreh is fickle," Uzma starts. "Perhaps his Wayfinder lead him to other adventures. Perhaps the desert swallowed him whole. It does not matter."

The druid shrugs.

"What matters is that the temple, which had been infested by foul puwampis after some intrigue among the monks long ago, has been cleansed," Uzma continues. "Gozreh lead the Guided One to Sarenrae's home, and the North Wind has now risen anew to defeat the darkness once and for all. It is safe now or your people to inhabit the temple, should they vow to respect its sanctity."

Uzma raises his hand to the sky, as he often does, to thank the Gods.

Princess Roveshki cocks her head at the druid and his choice of words.

"By the grace of Sarenrae," she intones, a curious look on her face as she looks at Uzma anew. She turns her head to Razif. "And you, newcomer. I am told that you are called Razif al-Akkuya. How do you come to be so near the Brazen Peaks?"
