:: Sarenith 6 - Evening - Assault on the Stag Lord's Fort ::

After his last attack, the Stag Lord left himself open and Rhavi stepped forward and took advantage. Rhavi's blade snakes forward and she feels it slide between his ribs beside his sternum. The Stag Lord lets out a hollow gasp for air eyes bright with rage before winking out. The body slides of Rhavi's blade and slumps to the ground.

.

Rillka and Andreas can see a faint glimmer above each other's bodies, noting each others presence. Suddenly a great howl on anguish washes over them as a dark shadow rises from the Stag Lords body and rips its way through the sky.

.

Kazmuk and Rhavi stand in the middle of a blood bath, the Stag Lord and numerous other bandits slain, their allies unconscious around them, and the badger no where in sight. The rain does begin to lessen as as they catch their breath.

As her blade finds it's mark and the Stag Lord draws his final breath, Rhavi freezes up as he slides off her blade.

She stares at him for a couple of seconds before remembering the badger.

She wipes around to look for it.

Did we see where it went? did it run off like a normal animal or did it disappear into thin air like a summon?

"Kazmuk, did you see where the badger went? Can you help your friends while I keep an eye out for it? We should also probably get them inside, out of this weather"

You did not see where it went, it could have crept away stealthily or disappeared.

The only threats that you think might still be around are the old man and the badger.

I see the Anvil remains unyielding; and our new friend; once fallen, now stand victorious! As Kazmuk heals, Andreas, Rilka sits up, her robes bloodstained and torn. She brightens when she sees Andreas stir. Once he is awake, she calls out, Hey Tall Folk; I said victory or death, not and! We won Sir Andreas! We won! I told you he couldn’t even kill one little pathetic halfling witch!
Rillka will help keep watch for badgers, or old spellcasters, until they are all ready to search.

Andreas' vision comes back with a few blinks and the understanding of what had happened. Agile and determined, he jumps back up with a his weapon some how in his hand.

where is she...where is the Stag lord.
The large knight asks as he turns around and around to take in his current situation. [/b]

Shaking his head as the pain echos through out his body.
What happened?

His eyes lock in on the dead form of the Stag Lord.
He is dead then?

Turning to look at the three companions.
Well done. I am indebted to you all for saving my life.

His face shows a bit of worrisome as he again looks around. His shield raises as he prepares for battle yet again.
Where is that badger...and that old man?

Rhavi turns to the big man

"The badger ran off. I got it pretty good and it backed off. While Kazmuk and I fought the Stag Lord it must have run off. We didn't see where it went. The old man I haven't seen since he conjured those spiders out of thin air. He could still be a threat. He might be in that cellar he came out off."

Did we see where the old man went? This post only says that "The man quickly runs out into the night once the spell is complete.". What direction was that? towards the gate? or maybe that trapdoor he came out off?

:: Sarenith 6 - Evening - Assault on the Stag Lord's Fort ::

With everyone conscious and healed, the group heads back down to the cellar. Looking down into it, the room is miserably damp, with water running and dripping into it. Swaths of mold cover the stone walls a the 15 foot high ceiling is full of cobwebs.

There are three arches that open into alcoves. Two has piles of wealth in the form of trade goods, adventuring gear, a large chest and a large bag.

The third alcove has what appears to be a nest made of scraps of leather, rope, and fur. In the nest an old man lies with his chest heaving, many cuts and injuries evident across his body.

As you descend into the cellar the old man looks up and you, his face strained and his voice weak. "So... so you've managed to down the beast I whelped. Good riddance." The old man coughs violently, blood coming out though none of his injuries look that severe.

He was your son? And you are the badger, or rather the badger was you? I am sorry for your loss, even in spite of everything. Can you heal yourself, or will you accept our help? Rillka askes a little shocked, guessing the man is a druid, and hopeful he may repent and join them as Akiros did. She then turns and looks to the tall folk waiting for them to speak.

"And yes, I was the badger. Now either kill me or leave me to die." The Old Man is growing steadily more pale and coughing more with each moment.

Andreas looks to the old man with contempt.
You gave aid to the Stag Lord, your son. Knowing full well what he was doing...and you did nothing to stop him. You helped him destroy lives.

He looks to Kazmuk as he steps forward.
I try to give all a second chance at a better life. To right the wrongs the have done but I see no redemption in your eyes. I only hope your death is quick and painless.

He steps back and lets Kazmuk do what he wants to do.

As the body falls...
He was a bandit and it was in our power to sentence him for his crimes.

:: Sarenith 6 - Evening - Assault on the Stag Lord's Fort ::

The Old Man dies quietly, ready for his end. The group looks around the cellar to see what is down here.

A large amount of stolen wealth can be found in these three rooms—the bandits have been stockpiling their ill-gotten goods for months. The majority of the wealth kept here consists of mundane trade goods like pelts, furs, tobacco, iron, bronze, miscellaneous weapons and armor (none masterwork or magic), and miscellaneous adventuring gear and tools worth a combined total of 6,850 gp. In addition, one chest in area the center alcve contains 4,500 cp, 2,052 sp, 894 gp, and 21 pp, while a large bag in the alcove furthest from the Old Man's nest contains 2,900 gp in various pieces of stolen jewelry.

There is 149.34 lbs of coins alone. The trade goods and adventuring gear would need a wagon to move it all.

Going back through the rest of the fort you find:

In the armoury:
10 longbows, 260 arrows, 5 short swords,
5 spears, four 50-foot lengths of hemp rope, a set of
chisels, 2 hammers, 3 tins of iron nails, and 4 suits of
leather armor.

Stag Lords bedroom:
141 gp, a polished azurite
crystal worth 9 gp, a carnelian worth 80 gp, a piece of
hematite worth 13 gp, a shard of obsidian worth 14 gp, a
red garnet worth 100 gp, a pewter belt buckle depicting a
pair of entwined succubi worth 30 gp, and a silver charm
bracelet worth 60 gp.

Stag Lord's body:
+1 leather armor, masterwork longsword, +1 composite longbow (+2
Str) with 20 arrows, amulet of natural armor +1, stag’s helm

Miscelaneous places:
4 long bows, 80 arrows, 4 longswords, 4 sets of leather armour.

You see no sign of Dovan in the fort. You setup some watches for the night and rest.

Come morning, Andreas wakes up to a different day.
He puts his armor on and walks his horse out to where the court yard. He proceeds to drag the body of the Stag Lord and his father out by his horse. His horse lowers herself and Andreas drags the two bodies across her back. She again stands up and the large human looks to the others.
We agreed to help the spirit back at the crossing. I figure we can do a burial at the river for both father and son. It is not ideal but it is a way of laying the bodies to rest. I hope it will release the spirit and let it pass on. That is at least how I am understanding it. If any wish to come along you are welcomed to join if not I will be back in a few hours. I just plan on riding to the mouth of the river and letting them go there.

If no one objects he will ride the bodies out to the mouth of the river walk the horse out a little bit so he can drag the bodies off better. Let them sink into the water and float away. Then he returns with hope that they did the right thing.

Returning to the fort does not bring happiness with him.
When word of the the Stag Lords defeat spreads...someone is bound to try and fill the power void. I think we need to ride fast and hard for the Temple. Bring Akiros and the others here to guard the fort. We can then ride to Restov to Let them know of the situation. I think it a bad idea to leave the fort without someone to take control of the area. When whomever they send takes control of the fort, we can go our separate ways. That is my thoughts on this situation.

:: Sarenith 7 - Late Morning - Assault on the Stag Lord's Fort ::

Andreas, Rillka, and Rhavi head out while Gird and Kazmuk remain to guard the fort. The gate swings easily enough for the due to open and close on their own and it is easy to set a weight on the opening to the tunnel to ensure no one can use it.

Rillka, Rhavi, and Andreas canter eastward toward the river mouth. Upon arriving, you find a spot that is easy enough to drag the bodies down to the water at, and lay them to rest in the water.

Stepping back from the waters edge you see the water still for a moment, then a grotesque rotting body lurches forward, standing on the water looking at the trio. Its eyes flare red for a moment as it stoops down to grab both the Stag Lord and The Old Man by the face, and then drags them under.

As the river calms again, a ranseur, a ring, and a belt float to the edge of the water. All items that the undead had worn.

It is a short ride back to the fort where everything is well under control.

It is a +1 ranseur, a +1 ring of protection, and a +2 belt of strength. I have added them to the loot sheet.

Yes Donovan is still out there and that is of concern to me. The Stag Lord was the real power here and few will be willing to follow Donovan right away. It will take him time but sooner or later he will show up again.

The large knight looks to the pile of items that have been recovered.
We should split these items between all of us. Take that items that are needed right now and the rest we can split when the fort has been secured by the Dragon Throne.

He looks to all of them. One after another.
I do not wish to offend anyone and please do not take offense from my words. The original charter members...Gird and myself are all that remain. Over the course of the months YEARS!!! we have met and recruited many fine people. Many of whom I would be honored to call among my friends. I want all of you to be part of this ending. To take that helm to Lord Ioseph Sellemius as proof that the charter is completed. I also understand your desire to stay and see that which you fought so valiantly to free from the hands of a tyrant...passed along to its rightful owner.

He looks to Gird and then back to the others.
I strongly feel that Gird and I should make the journey in person to Restov. Call it a stupid bit of honor but I signed my family's name to that charter and I wish to see its requirements all the way to the end. I would feel that I dishonored my family if I let this end with the word of a messenger. I would imagine that Gird would like to see this task finished as well for his family.

He looks to the three others.
You all are a part of this and have contributed to our success. I want you to be a part of the ending as well...you deserve it...You have earned it...I also understand your wish to not go and stay here. I will honor that which you want to do. Either way we should get Akiros and the others here to help guard this place. If any wish to join me on my trip to Restov I would be honored to have you along but I wish to travel to Restov.

I should note that with the Stag Lord's defeat you have overcome the main terror in the region, but The Charter was to explore a specific area of land. Specifically, The Charter will be completed when all the area that is blacked out inside of the red box in the exploration map is fully explored.

The large knight looks to the group.
We will secure the fort for the Dragon Throne. A power struggle may happen but it will be some time before Donovan will be able to muster a force...if ever.

We should ride for the temple with word of what has transpired here. We can come back with Akiros and the others. That force will be strong enough to keep the fort. The wagon is there and we can bring that back as well.

He looks out from the fort.
The charter states that we need to fully explore the region. That leave a small area to the south east. Unless we can get across the Shrike someplace close by, this will be a very long trek to Nivakta's Crossing.
He turn and facing to the west.
There is an area to the west of here. Again unless we can find another way to cross the Skunk River, we are traveling all the way to the source of it and around.

What does everyone wish to do?

Rillka unrolls the exploration map she has been creating as they explore. She begins thinking out loud...We should make this our new base, it is positioned for access southeast and northwest areas we still need to explore...and we still need to scout the area surrounding this fort; maybe we will get lucky and discover more fords or bridges. Or we build them.

Assuming this is forest, Rillka points to the northwest area thatis bracketed by forests, ...the wagon wont help there, but we can establish supply and communication lines between the mine, the temple and Oleg's. Rillka moves her hickory walking stick along the paths that connect them.
Send a weeks supplies to temple; bring a weeks here and we push from here at.... we need to rename this place.... this fort to the temple and back, using the waiting supplies to replenish when there. Besides, if we move Akiros here, then the temple is unguarded. He would be better off staying in the place of his renewed faith, rather than returning to this bandit fort.

Rhavi looks a little confused until Rillka brings out the map. That part at least makes sense, but all the names and places are unknown to her.

"I don't really know this place yet, so I'll take your word for it. I like the idea of using this as a base, if you still need to explore something around here. If this Akiros can't come here, do you have others that you trust that could? Even just five people could hold this place if we are not gone for to long at a time"

Map questions:
Our mine is the one in blue labeled "Gold Mine"?
What is the white X, the red line from there to here and the red circle?Where is Skunk River?
What's the water to the south of the stag lords fort? A lake, river or ocean?

Yes, the blue dot labelled Gold Mine has a number of Kazmuk's kin setting up there, if I remember correctly.
The white X was a current location marker at one point, the red line is the path the group took to get here.
Red circles are places where major encounters have happened or significant land marks. Blue dots/circles are friendly locations the group has allies. Bokken's hut should be a blue dot as well.
The large red circle area is the expected location of a small orc encampment. Which is either still a problem or its quit the area by now.
The Skunk river enters the lake to the west of the Fort, the other two are the Shrike (right most river) the the Thorn River (center river)
The water to the south is a large lake.

.

For people that can help, Denton and Keston Garess are both at Oleg's with 4 and 3 men respectively. Akiros has 3 men, and 3 bandits that surrendered are headed either towards Oleg's or the forest to escape you. The Sootscales could also be contacted. Kazmuk's kin are likely too busy setting up the gold mine and guarding it to be able to spare anyone.

You could try cross the Shrike at Nettle's Crossing though it is currently only a thick rope that probably can't hold more than one person at a time. Otherwise you'd be headed all the way up north to Fort Serenko or something to try and find a boat.

"There are orcs too? Then we definitely need someone to look after the fort! Do you have other options? Someone close by we can send for?"

Let me know if you have ay questions. I am waiting for what you'd like to do but no rush.

Gird is functional enough to act as a messenger, scout something out, or watch the fort.

So far it looks like the ideas are generally, figure out what's up with the orcs, figure out the best way to man the fort, figure out how to venture to the remaining two areas to explore.

Male HP:43/43 AC:21 T:13 FF:18 F:+6 R:+3 W:+2 Perc:+6 Init:2 Bastard Sword +9, 1d10+3 CMB:+6 CMD:+18 EA: Defend Human Cavalier 4

The tall knight listens as Rilkka talks.
Your assessment of the region is admirable.

He looks over the maps.
With the orcs about...I feel that spreading our forces between Oleg's, the Temple and here is ill advised. With the last known location of the orcs close to the fort...we can muster all our numbers and track down the orcs. Establishing lines of Communication and trade between the civilized areas of the region is something that we can offer to the Dragon Throne when they come in. Once the charter is complete we can see about staying on and helping out the new Lords that come here.

Pointing at the South-East area
The only way to cross the river is by foot at Nettles, which will take weeks...or at Nivakta's by horse, which will take months to complete. Perhaps Lady Rillka has a point. We build. Granted we do not have the resources, man power, money or the logistics in place to build a ford or a bridge. Maybe we have enough resource here to build a simple raft and rope ferry. Just big enough to cross the river near here. It will allow us to explore the area and save us time as well.

Pointing at the Western area
Andreas nods his head in agreement
The wagon should remain at whatever staging point we decide on. I think it will slow us down...especially if we need to move quickly.
This region is easier to access and I think it can wait a bit.

Andreas looks to Kazmuk.
Agreed. We should investigate the surrounding land around the fort and take care of the orcs.

He stands up.
Perhaps it is best that consolidate our forces here. That way we can better deal with the orcs and a show of force to those still following the stag lord. We should not abandon anything. Oleg's was targeted by the orcs on the word of the Stag Lord and they will not do so again after see what was there for them. The temple while very important does not hold much in ways of a defensible position. At least not compared to here. We can send word to those that are willing to fight with us to muster here at the fort. They can bring some supplies with them as well.

Lady Rillka has some good points but I think we should finish securing the region first before we start trying to build it up.

He smiles at rillka with appreciation.
I think you should put to paper your ideas. It will be better to have a full report to present to the Dragon Throne Lords when they come in. I am sure they will be appreciative of your efforts and welcome your thoughts.

I hope this goes through as I have had two previous posts that have been lost. This post also got eaten up by the internet goblins. This is the second time I have written this post. It is not as good as the first one so I hope I do not have to do it again.

Rillka listens to the Tall Folk and readily agrees to draft their palns and support the consolidation plan.

:: Sarenith 7 - Late Morning - Assault on the Stag Lord's Fort ::

With the Stag Lord's body dealt with and a great deal to do, you spend the rest of the day planning, preparing, and fixing any gear that needs it. You quickly setup the fort to be defendable by four people, but you heed the warnings you've received previously to stay off the slopes.

The rest of the day passes quickly.

.

:: Sarenith 8 and 9 - Around the Fort ::

Gird departs early in the morning to scout out the orc camp, a steady down pour of rain going on all day. While the fort is enough to keep the rain off the rest of you it is not a cheery location.

In the late afternoon the next day, Gird returns with good news. The orc camp is a smoldering mess. The group looks to have fractured, a dozen dead orcs at the camp and seven or eight sets of foot prints leaving in different directions and at different speeds. The orcs would be no worse than normal now that the band as broken up.

.

:: Sarenith 10 through 20 - Around the Fort ::

With the threat of the orcs seemingly gone, Gird sets out to get a message to Oleg's while the rest of you scout the area and keep the fort secure.

Over the eleven days Gird is gone, the four of you clean out the fort, and scout the area around it.

On the evening of Sarenith 20, Gird returns, with Keston and Denton and their retinues in tow.

"It is good to see the old fort in good hands and not with the Stag Lord." Keston says in greeting.

Gird also lets you know that Oleg's has received a message from Akiros saying that four bandits have found him to repent and have joined his band at the Temple.

In the time Gird was away you can also have cleared the hill side of the undead, but if you'd like to keep the undead security feature that's cool too.

Andreas has a small smile on his face as Gird reports his findings.

That is indeed good news. A much needed break in our favor.

It is good to see all of you again. The Stag Lord is dead and the orc threat appears to be dealt with. The region is starting to see a new dawn and the Dragon throne will look favorably on each of you for your part. I am certain of it. We have explored the area around the fort but we need to finish exploring some other regions before reporting to the Dragon Throne. They will then come here to take control of the Green Belt. Until that time we are in need of your forces to garrison this fort. It was difficult taking and I do not want to do it again. Would you be up to such a task while we finish with the exploration of the region? Once that it done I feel that this would truly secure the Green Belt.

We can destroy them but I think we should use them as another level of defense until we have secured the region. Then destroy them.

Rillka would:
Agree with keeping the undead.
Suggest burying the tunnel entrance again, let that be well guarded secret.
Draft the report as Andreas suggested.
Still would like to acquire 2 CLW or better potions if possible.
Will happily work to help rebuild in this time - but sorry, none of her spells are useful for construction or repair.
