Carina Viera |

Carina takes her watch time seriously, aiming her new pistol at the darkness and sweeping around for any stragglers.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
After a quick look around, she practices aiming down the sight of her gun and lining up a target, making sure her gun is unloaded the whole time.
When her watch has ended, she cuddles up next to Tanith after making sure to poke Eben to wake him up for his turn on watch.

Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |

Even though he’s deep asleep, Tanith wakes enough to wrap a brawny arm around Carina when she lays down to join him.
Unless we have a day where Tanith blows all his resources, assume he charges his bicep band (meditation crystal) each night.

Astraden Limhaare |

Astraden ties Lynwerd to a bush about twenty feet from the fire and summons more food for herself and any hungry companions.
After finishing prayers, she rolls a rock out to the western edge of camp and sits down to begin her watch. The setting is unfamiliar, but she's well-used to this kind of vigil, and it passes in mostly pleasant reminiscence.

She is also fully geared up for her watch.

Dungeon Kobold |

I'm happy to just go with a random order like:
10:00pm to 2:00am—Astraden-Tanith
2:01 to 4:00—Carina-Cuetzpalli
4:01 to 6:00—Farrukh-Eben
I gave Astraden and Tanith a bit of extra time since they need to pray anyways. Any alternative preferences?
1d6 ⇒ 6
It is a bit past 4:00 in the morning (16th of Planting). Farrukh and Eben are watching the camp now, taking care to keep the fire lit. The horses seem uneasy.
Everyone can make Perception checks, though those who are asleep take the standard -10
Ten orcs approach. The horses can see them clearly, and Astraden's seems close to panicking.
Inits (PCs;horses;monsters): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 181d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 51d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7
Since there's almost no way either of the waking characters can fail that, I'm not gonna try hard to hide it: Combat's about to start.
Surprise Round. PCs who made the Perception check are up. Remember, sleeping characters are prone, so their surprise round actions will likely be to stand up.
The map situation is thus: Especially dark green areas are thick plant growth and difficult terrain. Boulders all give total cover as long as the largest boulder of the clump is bigger than a five-foot square. Smaller boulders give Partial Cover.
As the map states, anywhere more than ten feet from the campfire is Dim Light (20% miss chance).

Carina Viera |

Perception *Action Point!*: 1d20 - 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (14) - 2 + (3) = 15
*SNAP*
Carina starts awake. Something's coming! After a quick glance, she narrows her eyes. Orcs. Of course.
Surprise Round: Actions
Standard Action: Smack Tanith to wake him up (if he's still asleep) OR: Stand up!
Otherwise...
Carina springs to her feet, twirling one of her bombs in her hand!

Eben MacTeague |

Adjusting to long days of riding in a saddle isn't the most comfortable experience for Eben, but he definitely prefers the sore butt one gets from riding to the sore everything else that accumulates from a day of walking down long, dusty roads. Still, he gets off and walks (either letting someone else ride, or else just leading Grifter for a while) for a few hours at a time just to stretch. Though he does make a point of staying on long enough, at least the first few days, to make it clear he absolutely doesn't care what any god of overly-muscled men might think about his 'laziness'.
That watch order is fine by me, although if it weren't it's probably too late to say otherwise. :-) In fact, I'm fine with that being the default watch order under any most standard circumstances unless otherwise specified.
Eben has always been a night owl, used to sleeping in the late afternoon and evening to be able to spend an entire night being active, so waking up for the late watch isn't too onerous for him. Between low conversations with Farrukh, he passes the time practicing some contact juggling moves, just to keep his hands and fingers in shape.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Nevertheless (and aided in no small part by how sharp his senses become whenever he is wearing his new bracers) he is instantly aware of the approaching enemies. Even before the twig has fully snapped, a spell is flying from his lips to light up the night.
Casting dancing lights; I'll be marking the map shortly, but long story short, all four of the southeastern group of orcs will be visible in regular light.

Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |

Perception: 1d20 + 2 - 10 ⇒ (1) + 2 - 10 = -7
Tanith sleeps like a stone until Carina's worried voice reaches his ears.
The big man wakes with a start and jumps to his feet.
Move to stand up.

Dungeon Kobold |

The orcs, now plainly visible, growl and shade their eyes at the sudden illumination. "Bright light! Bright light!"
Tanith can't move yet, since he didn't catch the surprise round.
Farrukh is up. Astraden and Cuetzpalli (and Spiny) may or may not be up, if they make their checks. If Farrukh posts and either of them haven't, I'll roll Perception for them.

Eben MacTeague |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

The orcs, now plainly visible, growl and shade their eyes at the sudden initiative. "Bright light! Bright light!"
Now remember, guys: don't get water on them and don't feed them after midnight.

Astraden Limhaare |

Perception (sleeping): 1d20 + 8 - 10 ⇒ (18) + 8 - 10 = 16
Astraden wakes and rises silently.
Surprise round: Stand up (move action).
AC is 11/11/11.

Cuetzpalli |

Won't be home to post for a while yet. Anyone can roll for me. Or not and I'll do it when I get home.

Farrukh Al'Khatel |

Farrukh can't fail that check.
"ORCS!" he shouts, drawing his sword and shield and moving a bit closer to the creatures.
1 Move action, and he marks the nearest one as his Favored Target.

Dungeon Kobold |

It's a Surprise Round, so choose either movement or Favored Target.
Cuetzpalli;Spiny Perceptions: 1d20 + 7 - 10 ⇒ (2) + 7 - 10 = -11d20 + 7 - 10 ⇒ (10) + 7 - 10 = 7
Nice to get simple results like that, eh?
Orcs.
The orcs close in, realizing they've been spotted. As several of them advance on the horses, hefting their falchions, the rest advance on the main group.
Horses.
Wisdom Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Astraden's horse, Lynwerd, goes wild. She starts straining desperately at her bridle, eyes rolling into the back of her skull. Laughing at the poor beast's terror, the orcs take advantage of her struggles to cut her down.
AoOs: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 101d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 201d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Crit?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Damage: 4d4 + 8 ⇒ (2, 1, 3, 2) + 8 = 16
Grifter, on the other hand, remains calm. It kicks at the orcs, who growl and duck out of the way.
Hooves: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Round 1: You are up!

Dungeon Kobold |

Also, it's a DC -10 Perception check to hear combat, so everyone wakes up now.

Astraden Limhaare |

Astraden steps back around the fire, holding her mask. "I ask a bit of light to counter this unluck," she prays, and her symbol flashes gold. She snatches her shield from its place under her pillow.
+1 to a bunch of rolls for you guys.
Round 1: Five-foot step (no action), cast prayer (standard action), and pick up item (move action). Prayer lasts 5 rounds.

Farrukh Al'Khatel |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

I choose movement.
Favored Target on the one directly in front of me. Yes, I know it's called "Studied Target" now but that's dumb and I refuse to call it that. Hmph.
Farrukh swings at the Orc in front of him with his sword.
"Now's the moment of truth! Die, orc, die!"
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
1d6 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
OMG A 10 ON AN ATTACK ROLL IT TOTALLY WORKED

Eben MacTeague |

"I JUST BOUGHT THAT HORSE, YOU F~$*S!" Eben shouts angrily, seeing Lynwerd fall with Grifter being the likely next target. He takes a step back, to avoid the orc who's a handspan away from him, pivots on one foot, and fires at the horse-murdering bastards.
5-foot step NW, swift action to activate Arcane Strike, full attack using Rapid Shot at the orc to my immediate west.
Shortbow+PBS+prayer-Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 15
Probably a miss, but rolling for damage anyhow
damage+PBS+Arcane Strike+prayer: 1d6 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 9
miss%: 1d100 ⇒ 8
Shortbow+PBS+prayer-Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 24
damage+PBS+Arcane Strike+prayer: 1d6 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 12
miss%: 1d100 ⇒ 59
Action point, because don't f~++ with my horse!
Shortbow+PBS+prayer-Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 27
crit confirm: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 13
damage+PBS+Arcane Strike+prayer: 1d6 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 8
miss%: 1d100 ⇒ 90
OK, shot #1 definitely missed, due to concealment if nothing else. Sots 2 & 3 hit home, most likely, albeit without critting. In case shot #2 kills my target, Shot # 3 goes to next one to the south.
EDIT: recalculating for Astraden's prayer
Recalculated. Oh, and just because Grifter is a gelding doesn't mean you can call him 'her'. That's just being mean.
dancing lights lasts 9 rounds

Dungeon Kobold |

Farrukh cuts into the orc, his blade cutting right to the bone of the musclebound monster's arm. The orc only snarls as its life's blood pours out, heedless of its impending death.

Dungeon Kobold |

Eben, that does crit. Even without the crit, though, that thing is crazy dead.
Eben's first arrow misses. His second hits the orc in the shoulder, and the beast roars in pain.
His third goes straight between the orc's eyes and pokes out the other end, splattering blood and brainmatter onto the stunned face of his comrade.
Oh, and just because Grifter is a gelding doesn't mean you can call him 'her'. That's just being mean.
Did I?

Eben MacTeague |

Eben wrote:Oh, and just because Grifter is a gelding doesn't mean you can call him 'her'. That's just being mean.Did I?
Oh. I had thought there was a 'she kicks at the orcs' line. Maybe I mistook it for poor Lynwerd's flailing. It's late and me tired. :-)

Eben MacTeague |

Wow, one of the orcs moved right next to where Spiny's going to be standing up. That's like stepping onto a bear trap attached to a buzzsaw.

Cuetzpalli |

Spiny doesn't bother to get off the ground before he starts trying to kill the orc looming over him.
Prayer, prone.
Bite: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 1 - 4 = 171d6 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 1 = 8
Claw: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 1 - 4 = 241d4 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 = 10
Claw: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 1 - 4 = 121d4 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 1 = 9
Cuetzpalli scrambles to his feet, reaching down to pick up his graetaxe from beside his bedroll.
Move action; Pick up axe. Move action; stand up.

Dungeon Kobold |

Still on his side, Spiny sinks his teeth into the orc's leg and yanks him to the ground. The orc doesn't stand a chance.
Carina and Tanith are up.

Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |

Now Tanith jumps to his feet, stirred to action by Carina's warning. Even bare-chested and unprepared, he has no fear. The orc's were strong but he had the Brawler's might on his side.
"Stay behind me Red", he warns.
Standing up. Casting Bull's Strength.

Carina Viera |

Round 1: Actions
Move Action: Draw Crossbow
Standard Action: Shoot crossbow at lower orc threatening Grifter!
Carina scrambles for the crossbow at her side, flipping over onto her belly and shooting at the second orc attacking Grifter!
Ranged Attack (Prayer): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Dungeon Kobold |

Carina's shot misses (also, that orc gets cover).
Orcs.
One of the orcs starts dragging Lynwerd'd body away, licking his lips.
Grifter AoO: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Grifter kicks him viciously, dislocating the creature's jaw, but it somehow keeps moving.
The other two orcs realize their real danger and ignore Grifter, rushing over to engage Eben and Tanith.
Though one of them is obviously bleeding to death from Farrukh's strike, three of the orcs gang up on the slayer.
Falchions (first two flank): 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 2 = 151d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 2 = 251d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Crit?: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 2 = 17
Damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (4, 3) + 4 = 11
Though Farrukh is too quick and well-armored for two of them, a misplaced stone causes him to trip and take a lucky hit from the third.
The last orc rushes up, snarling, and swings at the prone Spiny. His falchion seems of slightly finer make than the rest, and he also looks slightly older than his fellows.
Falchion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 = 14
Horses.
Lynwerd Stabilize (-2 from rough treatment): 1d20 + 3 - 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 - 3 = 14
She'll have to make this check every round she gets dragged, though.
Grifter whinnies, straining at his bridle. He settles for swinging over the boulder at the nearest orc. Sadly, the boulder makes it hard to get a proper hit in.
Hooves (partial cover: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 3 - 2 = 81d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 - 2 = 7
Round 2. You are up!

Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |

Answering the orc's approach with a roar of challenge, Tanith lunges forward for a clinch.
Grapple (Bull's Str): 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 13 + 2 = 22

Dungeon Kobold |

Tanith wraps a meaty fist around the orc's arm. The orc swears, unable to break the hold.

Carina Viera |

Round 2: Actions
Move Action: Stand up from prone (this'll hurt, I know)
Standard Action: Throw Precise Bomb at orc carrying off Lynwerd!
Carina scrambles to her feet, provoking an attack...
Assuming she isn't knocked into the negatives...
Carina then pulls out a bomb in an oddly-shaped vial, throwing it at the orc dragging the unconscious horse away!
Here's hoping it hits... it SHOULD keep the horse from getting burned...
Ranged Touch Attack (Bomb, 2 Range Increments, Prayer): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Damage (Precise Bomb!, Prayer): 3d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 4, 1) + 4 = 14
Designating the two squares the horse occupies within the blast radius as being unaffected by the AoE from the bomb.
AC vs Melee: 14 for AoO (yay Shield Other!)
EDIT: Increased damage to account for prayer.

Astraden Limhaare |

Carina, note that prayer also adds to damage. Tanith, you should also be able to add that luck bonus to CMB.
Astraden whispers a charm and, shimmering into nothingness, steps around the orcs into flanking position with Farrukh. She raises her rapier in her right hand, ready to plunge it into the orc's back.
Round 2: Cast invisibility (standard action), movement (move action), and draw weapon as part of movement (free action). Prayer lasts 4 rounds and invisibility lasts 50 rounds.

Dungeon Kobold |

Correction: Spiny and Farrukh take 1 less point of damage (prayer).

Dungeon Kobold |

The bomb lands straight in the maw of the broken-jawed orc, obliterating his entire head.
Farrukh, Cuetzpalli and Eben are up.

Cuetzpalli |

Cuetzpalli steps over and swings at the orc which just brutally slashed his dinosaur. "Spiny, no!" he shouts, bringing his axe down at the older orc.
Attack (Prayer, Action point!): 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 1 + (5) = 18
Damage: 1d12 + 7 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 6 + 1 = 20
Spiny hisses in pain, and joins his master in assaulting the older orc, still laying on his back.
Bite: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 1 - 4 = 141d6 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 = 10
Claw: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 8 + 1 - 4 = 151d4 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 1 = 8
Claw: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 8 + 1 - 4 = 151d4 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 = 10

Dungeon Kobold |

Cuetzpalli's blow brings the orc down in two pieces.
How do you want to revise Spiny's move?

Cuetzpalli |

Spiny stands up and moves over to help Farrukh (instead).

Farrukh Al'Khatel |

Farrukh grunts in pain as the Falchion bites into him. He lashes out with his sword and shield in tandem, bashing the injured Orc and slashing the one behind him.
The one not between me and Astraden gets slashed.
Slash: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Bash: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
The Bashed Orc, if still alive, is pushed back 5 feet if an 18 overcomes his CMD. 10 feet if it somehow beats it by 5.

Dungeon Kobold |

Both of those hit. Uh, I assume you just forgot to roll damage. :P
Bash: 1 + 12 = 13
Farrukh mashes the injured orc's chest in with the deadly klar and gravely injures the other. Spiny finishes it off with a nasty bite.
Slash: 1d6 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Eben is up.

Eben MacTeague |

Eben, not liking having orcs on two sides of him, steps back as deftly as he can to get out of their reach. Annoyingly, he winds up still within falchion distance of one of them, but just grits his teeth and fires at that same orc, even as it swings its weapon at him in response.
5-foot step back SE, activating Arcane Strike, and eating an AoO to make another Rapid Shot attack.
Shortbow+PBS+Prayer-Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 13
damage+PBS+Prayer+Arcane Strike: 1d6 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 11
Shortbow+PBS+Prayer-Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 9
damage+PBS+Prayer+Arcane Strike: 1d6 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 9
Well, these guys seem to have lousy AC, so I think one shot might hit, at least.
Dancing lights lasts 8 more rounds.

Dungeon Kobold |

AoO: 1d20 + 5 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 5 - 1 = 5
The orc swings in a wide arc and comes closer to hitting its comrade than Eben, as the bard fires an arrow right into its chest. It seems like the arrow has surely pierced the orc's heart, but the green-skinned monster just roars.
Orcs.
In a matter of seconds, the orcs have gone from eight (with their leader alive) to four (with their leader dead and another with an arrow in his chest).
They utterly panic.
Three of the orcs withdraw, though one can't avoid taking attacks from Farrukh and Astraden.
Astraden;Farrukh AoOs: 1d20 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 251d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 51d6 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
Astraden reappears, ramming her rapier into the orc's leg. This allows Farrukh to move in and hack into the monster's side. The blow isn't incredibly precise, but the power behind it is more than enough to bring the monster down.
The last tries in vain to escape Tanith's iron grip.
CMB: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Round 3: You are up.

Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |

Tanith laughs. "The orcs are renowned for their strength. Don't tell me you're giving up already!"
The hulking Kordite tightens his grip and drags his opponent to the ground in a crushing chokehold.
Swift for Sacred Weapon +1
Bulldog: 1d20 + 13 + 2 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 13 + 2 + 5 - 2 = 35
Nonlethal Damage: 1d8 + 6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 4 + 1 = 13
He's also pinned.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24

Eben MacTeague |

"No, because you tried to kill my horse." Eben says, simply, to the retreating orcs. He gestures, and his set of lights swirl across the landscape, keeping the fleeing orcs well lit. He then moves forward a step and fires at their retreating forms.
shortbow+prayer-rapid shot: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 1 - 2 = 9
shortbow+prayer-rapid shot: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 1 - 2 = 9
Farrukh, please take your dice back.

Carina Viera |

Round 3: Actions
Move Action: Move to downed horse
Standard Action: Use CMW extract on downed horse
Carina watches the orcs flee with a mixture of contempt and pity. [i]Pathetic. Hard to believe they're bigger problems elsewhere...[/ooc]
She moves over to the unconscious horse and takes out a flask of blue liquid. Holding the horse's mouth open with one hand, she pours the extract down Lynwerd's throat.
"This'll make you better!"
CMW: 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (3, 2) + 5 = 10

Dungeon Kobold |

Lynwerd's eyes flutter open. She whinneys, looking much better.
Unfortunately, her leg was broken and she must now be shot.
